[lace-chat] Canadian tax and medical

2005-03-24 Thread
You asked if our tax free day was later because of medical insurance? Well
it's not. In British Columbia we pay $96 a month for basic gov't health
insurance. This by no means covers everything..which you soon find out if
you are hospitalised :( For the "extras" you have to buy additional private
insurance, so add another 30 or 40 dollars a month. We pay for our own
dental and glasses, although we are entitled to one eye exam every two years
through the gov't insurance. Alberta may sound like a good deal but they
too pay health insurance premiums and have even less coverage. It amazes me
that our federal gov't claims we have free medical. Technically we do in
that if you are admitted to emergency they must treat you (although that
doesn't stop some of the doctors sending you a bill after). This is a
loophole that a lot of young people take advantage of in this province
because they can't afford the premiums. Canada has a small population (30
million) and a huge land to manage. Our taxes are high, but that's the
price we pay for having plenty of "elbow room", safety, and a comfortable
life-style. We may grumble about our taxes etc., but damn, we've got it
good. I can't think of a better place to live. Sharon on sunny Vancouver
Island

[lace-chat] :-) Completely tasteless.

2005-03-24 Thread Jean Nathan
This is completey tasteless and non-PC, but it made me giggle this morning.
Our local radio presenter said that somewhere in the US a town is being
built only for deaf people, and that several people from the UK have signed
up to live there. He didn't know what the town's name was to be, but
suspected it might be something unimaginative like "Deaftown". His
suggestion is that it should be called "What?"

[lace-chat] MP- Tatted Crosses E-book available in time for Easter

2005-03-24 Thread Tatdlace
Hi tatters,
I've finally managed to get all of the models
re-tatted and held on to them long enough to get
their family photo taken. Boy, the stuff
sure doesn't last long around here, I have to hide
it as soon as it's done or it gets given away. I
wanted to get a couple of pages of colour pictures
for the book so they could be seen altogether as
a reference for size and shape and just as I got
them all done somebody would really NEED one.
Anyway, the cross bookmarks are done, their
pictures have been taken and the book is ready.
There are 16 patterns of varying difficulty and
each pattern is on it's own page so you can print
the page you need and tuck it in your pocket with
your shuttle. This is an E-book that will be sent
out in .pdf format and it's just over 2MB in size.
The cost is $14.00 Canadian for anyone using PayPal
or $11.00 US for Americans paying by check (or $14
for Canadians paying by cheque).
I may, at a later date, publish it in a pocket
size format saddle stitched so it'll end up 5.5x8
and this time I'm going to be smart enough to take
the pictures before the crosses get taken :-)
For anyone interested in a preview of the
items I've uploaded the pictures to my photo album
and DH should have all the wrinkles out of the
order form this weekend.

Isn't, yet; they're hoping to break ground in autumn. At the moment,
they're still at the design stage.

only for deaf people,
Not necessarily, but the "first language" *is* to be American Sign
Language.

He didn't know what the town's name was to be, but

Well, he was wrong... :) According to NY Times (Monday, March 21):
"Nearly 100 families - with people who are deaf, hard of hearing or who
can hear but just want to communicate in sign language - have already
publicly declared their intention to live in Mr Miller's village, to be
called Laurent, after Laurent Clerc, a French educator of the deaf from
the 1800"

I was a bit surprised (we do, afterall, have "our own" Helen Keller,
but I suppose she's associated more with the blind than the deaf), but
it was nice to see that Mr Miller (who dreamt up the town), has no
anti-French prejudices. I expect, being deaf himself, he never heard of
"freedom fries"

Maybe in OZ :) US has just closed the loophole that permitted people
with oversized "plastic" debt to announce bankruptcy. So, the only
reckoning there's is going to be is that the bums come in and sell your
trailer from under you, because you couldn't keep up with the payments
on your many credit cards (though why anyone would want to have more
than one...). Needless to say the big financial institutions are still
permitted to "live on promise", and announce bankruptcy when they can't
deliver. Those who'd been ordered by the courts to pay damages can also
welsh out via the bancruptcy court. But not your hoi-polloi Joe Schmoe.

Of course, your Joe Schmoe *can* buy a gun (including assault weapons),
easy as pie, so perhaps your vision of retribution (a la French or
Soviet Revolution) isn't *entirely* off base, but I hope it is...

[lace-chat] Lacemakers Circle AGM

2005-03-24 Thread Thelacebee
Spiders,

I know that people have mentioned the IOLI and Lace Guild conventions but are
any of you intending to go to the Lacemakers Circle AGM in May, it's going to
be just outside of Kings Lynn?

I'd love to know which of the spiders I'm going to get the chance to meet up
with.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: The President Explains His Social Security Plan

2005-03-24 Thread Tamara P Duvall
Given the source, I'm certain the quote is exact. Being the only exact
thing about the whole :)

From: P.B.
I'm glad we have this clear, now.
You may have seen this already but it's such a classic example of our
Leader's exquisite grasp of issues and articulation that I couldn't
resist passing it on.
Tampa, FL, Feb. 4, 2005
WOMAN IN AUDIENCE:
I don't really understand. How is it the new [Social Security] plan is
going to fix that problem?

Verbatim response:
President Bush:
Because the -- all which is on the table begins to address the big cost
drivers.
For example, how benefits are calculated, for example, is on the table.
Whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price
increases.
There's a series of parts of the formula that are being considered.
And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those
-- changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has
been promised more likely to be -- or closer delivered to that has been
promised.

Does that make any sense to you? It's kind of muddled.
Look! , there's a series of things that cause the -- like, for example,
benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to
the increase of prices.
Some have suggested that we calculate -- the benefits will rise based
upon inflation, as opposed to wage increases.
There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into
effect.
In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits
grow, if those -- if that growth is affected, it will help on the red.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: Bill & Hillary & George & Laura go to the Superbowl

2005-03-24 Thread Tamara P Duvall
Got this one from my favourite Republican (one of the only two I know
who has a sense of humour ), and it's an excellent *joke*. Bu I'm
forwarding it as I got it; with the bad spelling ("traveling"???) and
the bad grammar ("the Clinton's"???), because it proves the old Polish
adage: "from the head does the fish start stinking". Our "head"
definitely doesn't care about the finer points of learning or language
- he's proved it. And, given enough time, Republicans will certainly
make sure that there's No (capable of reading) Child Left Behind... :)

From: B.R.

George and Laura Bush and Bill and Hillary Clinton are traveling by
train to
the Super Bowl. At the station, George and Laura each buy a ticket and
watch
as Bill and Hillary buy just one ticket.

"How are the two of you going to travel on only one ticket?" asks
George W,
astonished at what he is seeing.

"Watch and learn," answers Hillary. They all board the train. George
and
Laura take their respective seats but Bill and Hillary cram into a
toilet
together and close the door.

Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around
collecting
tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, "Ticket, please." The
door
opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The
conductor takes it and moves on.

The Bushes see this happen and agree it was quite a clever idea, so
after
the game they decide to try a similar plan on the return trip. When
they
get to the station they see the Clinton's at the window buying a single
ticket
for the return trip.

To their astonishment, the Clinton's see that the Bushes don't buy any
ticket
at all. "Aren't you taking a terrible chance by traveling without a
ticket?"
says Hillary. "Live and learn," answers Laura Bush.

When they board the train, the Bushes cram themselves into a toilet and
the
Clinton's cram into another toilet just down the way. Shortly after the
train
leaves the station, George W. leaves their toilet and walks over to the
Clinton's toilet, knocks on their door and says, "Ticket, please."

And the Democrats are still trying to figure out how they lost the
election.
