Ditto ditto. Another excellent web site which includes hoaxes and chain
letters:

http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/

In the more than five years since my daughter told me to check this sort of
email, I have **never once** found a "real" case -- they were all on this
site! Sadly, even when people are told, most just delete the information
and go right on sending out the stuff.

Interesting to find out these stories are hoaxes -- still, they COULD happen,
and it's certainly good to be careful. But it kind of makes you wonder why
people make up things like that, when there are so many REAL crimes that could
have been reportedMaybe it's like those people who feel justified in
telling lies to support something, because they believe in it so
stronglysort of
an "end justifies the means" type of thinking? Or maybe the creators are on
some kind of ego trip, and make up a story they can recognize, just so they can
see how far it travels on the wings of peoples' fears.

At any rate, next time I hear a REAL crime story that could serve as a
helpful warningmaybe I'll pass it along! :<))

[lace-chat] I had a good week

2005-08-24 Thread A & Y Farrell
Greetings gentle spiders,
Just crowing about the door prize I won at a Bernina demonstration last week.
A very expensive swiss army style sewing tool. How fantastic it opens like a
pocket knife and holds some very handy little sewing tools like scissors,
chalk, needle threader, seam guide, awl, leather punch. It's very handy.

We had our first exchange student for a week. He is from Japan. He has little
English but uses what he does know very well. The second night we took him
down to the bush behind our house where I knew some elusive kangaroos were. We
spotted them but they took off quickly before we could get photos, camera shy
I think.;). The rest of the week has been a lot of fun, I will be sorry to see
him go tomorrow.

DD1 phoned to say she is having a great time now she is settled in Virginia.
She's joined the marching band. Ho, ho, ho that will be a laugh, she hardly
knows her left foot from her right. Australian brass bands aren't that big on
marching. And could we please send her a survival pack of Vegemite and Tim
Tams?

Went out to watch the stars tonight and the Southern Aurora had lit up the sky
so we weren't able to see many stars at all. But we still enjoyed what we
could see, and the Southern Lights are fantastic anyway. It's amazing to think
that the light originates so for away and yet we can see it so easily.

Hope you all have a great week too.

Cheers, Yvonne.

The fact that they sound plausible is what keeps urban legends
circulating even in the face of proven falsehood. One of the sure ways
to spot one is the FOAF part. That stands for Friend Of A Friend. Most
of them are at least 2 persons removed from whoever is retelling the
story. I think most of these are the modern version of the ghost stories
that were told around campfires. The kind that make a shiver go along
your spine. A classic example is the story of the choking Doberman.
There has never been an actual recorded case of this happening but the
story just keeps going and going, like the Energizer Bunny :D

Of course! Aha! That's a perfect explanation - I should have thought of that,
especially since "The Choking Doberman" and other books exposing urban
legends were written by a former professor here in UT, Harold Brunvand. E.g.,

(I love that "Brain Drain" story!)

[lace-chat] Crime warnings

2005-08-24 Thread Jean Nathan
One of the programes on our local radio station has a spot called "Crime
Botch" rather than the usual "Crime Watch", when they report local crimes
where wanabee ciminal makes a complete botch of it. Makes you wonder at the
mentality of these people.

One incident which DID happen to my next door neighbour a couple of
Christmases ago was when a local lad tried to steal the small Christmas tree
with lit decorative lights my neighbour had outside his front door. The
wuld-be criminal lent his bicycle against the wall of a small alleyway
leading from our road, between houses to a housing estate. Because the wire
to the lights was plugged into the porch light socket above the door, he
made such a racket trying to unplug it that he disturbed the neighbours dog.
The neighbour opened the door and the would-be thiefe ran off pursued by the
dog and the neighbour, tried to get on his bicycle, which he'd parked facing
away from the way he wanted to go. He got tangled in the bicycle, so he left
it and ran, and the neigbbour called his dog back and took the bicycle to
his house before calling the police. The police said they knew who the lad
was - he'd just breathlessly phoned the police station to report that
someone had stolen his bike.

Because the lad was already now to them, they called at the lad's house to
take a statement the next day. They found the living room full of goods he
had managed to steal. Talk about really stupid.

I've never heard of a *choking* Doberman, but Donosy (an e-newsletter
coming out of Poland, to which I subscribe in order to keep my Polish
up to date) has, within the past 6 months, reported two cases of small
children severely bitten by the same breed. One child (the first case)
died, the second is still in the hospital. Both cases had been reported
in major national newspapers, so it's not likely to be a hoax.

Here's one version of the Choking Doberman urban legend:

A woman came home from shopping to find her Doberman choking on something,
she quickly put him in the car and drove him to the vet. The vet told her to go
on home while he operated to remove whatever was lodged in the dog's windpipe,
and he'd call her when she could pick up her pet. She wasn't home for long
when the vet called and told her in an excited voice to get out of the house
right now, he'd be by to explain in a few minutes. from her neighbor's window
she
saw the vet arrive with the police and ran out to see if her dog was alright
and what was going on. As the police ran into her house the vet told her what
her loving pet had choked on, two human fingers. The police found the escaped
Lunatic hiding in the closet nursing his mangled hand.

This shorthand version of the tale didn't properly explain that she came home
to find the dog choking -- so she wasn't there when the fingers were chewed
off. I guess the guy had stopped screaming before she got home, too (other
versions say it was a burglar, so he would not want to be discovered, and
stifled
his screams, I guess).
