Can't say about Iceland, but Poland is one of the countries around the
Baltic Sea. In July, I'd expect between 20 and 23 degree Celsius during
the day; 25 is considered "hot" and doesn't, usually, last very long.
It would probably be cooler than that on the ship. And we get a lot of
rain too, when it gets even cooler. Definitely layers, with more long
sleeved shirts than short sleeved ones, a sweater or two, and at least
one light-to-medium weight jacket for the evenings.

Of course, with the global warming, the short sleeved shirts cannot be
eliminated entirely; the past few summers have had their "swelter
points" of 30C, some of which lasted as long as a week...

[lace-chat] Locations and names.

2006-02-24 Thread Maxine Diffey
Hi all,
I was chatting with my SIL last night, ans she mentioned that part of
her mother's family originated in England.

The family name is Southcombe, and they were in Rose Ash, near South
Molton in Devon. There were members of the family who were the vicars
for over a century at the church St Peter in Chains, in Rose Ash.
The family built a huge mansion on a farm named Honiton Braham (?), and
the house was named Honiton Hall.
Any lace connections there I wonder.. The reproduction of a photo she
has of the family coat of arms shows the arms have been placed on a
piece of lace, reminiscent of Torchon, but it was such a poor
reproduction of the photograph I could well be mistaken, all I could see
was that it was a very geometric lace behind the shield the arms were
mounted on.

Any one with any info, feel free to email directly.
By the way, they are going to be cruising in the northern hemisphere
this coming July, around the Baltic Sea area, and as far west as
Iceland. Can somebody please give me an indication of the temperatures
they might encounter.

You use -ly to make an adverb out of an adjective.

Life gets complicated because not all adverbs were made out of adjectives, and
some words are both adjectives and adverbs (and may be nouns and verbs as
well). Not to mention that there is often a subtle difference in meaning
between "word" and "wordly". (Cf. "sick" and "sickly", both adjectives, but
"sickly" can also be an adverb -- though it tends to mean "while feeling sick"
more often than "in a sick manner".) (Except when it's modifying an adjective:
"his face was a sickly yellow".)

"Wordly" reminds me that there are also adjectives that were made by adding -ly
to nouns: "with all my worldly goods I thee endow", "his cowardly act", "her
womanly charms" . . .

I think that here, "-ly" is a shortened form of "-like". Mostly.

There is one rule that always holds: if you tack an -ly onto an adjective in a
predicate, the resulting word modifies the *verb* in the sentence. Thus the
often cited:

"I feel bad about it." -- it makes me sad
"I feel badly about it." I am pawing around it with mittens on.

Then you get into the little idiomatic things -- the adverb form of "good" is
"well" -- if you add -ly to "good", you get another adjective which means not
good, but large: "He was paid a goodly sum." And if you feel well, you aren't
feeling in a good manner, you are feeling *healthy*. But if you write well,
you are writing in a good manner -- and you can feel good, but you can't write
good.
(You can, on the other hand, write "good" on a report.)

Long live confusion!

Yes, it's probably legal. The material is older than
1923. It is most likely no longer under copyright.
The cost is very low. You can buy it from her, or you
can search out a copy, scan it into your computer page
by page for yourself. Your cost and time for doing
this would be much more than the $4 price on the email
copy.

When a person gets this long email, it can be saved to
CD if preferred. Since it's not shipped, there would
be no shipping cost.

This is just a modern version of the photocopied books
and articles offered on eBay.

[lace-chat] ebay ?

2006-02-24 Thread Melinda Weasenforth
 Dear friends,

I don't know if this should go on chat or lace so I just put it here. Just a
question, this item is on ebay, but the person says that there is not shipping
and handling because after she receives the money she will email a copy to the
winner, is that legal? And the answer to your next question is no I will not
be getting this from this person. Anyway its ebay item #8261102086.

Thank you, Lynn

Dear Tamara,

What the heck Is it something in my teeth??? Which have been
"rearranged", drastically, on the left-hand side, yesterday (the r.h is
scheduled March 23; will it change my puter settings *again*???). It's
like something that the Sci-Fi fans among you ought to be able to
unscramble'; it sure is beyond *my* 2 grey cells... :)

The only answer with which I can come up, in this mysterious magical world
of computers, is that your event co-incided with the same day that I, after
about 12 years, finally changed my email address I always said I
never would, because my little local server (Friendly Giant) offered such
fabulous service. However, the bigger companies have at last offered me a
cheap enough deal on broadband, which I've taken up.

I've tried for about 4 days now mucking around with two email addresses and
swapping between Outlook and Eudora. It's just not worth the effort. So
during the coming week, I have the unenviable task of informing Friendly
Giant that I'm no longer with them :(
