Good advice. Several other lists I'm on have big problems with ISPs banning
list mail addresses because the same mail is going to many of their
customers. Most of them sort it out and it stays sorted. However a US ISP
called Comcast is a persistent offender; they seem unable to keep email
lists out of their spam filters for more than a few hours at a time.

There's a commercial connection between Earthlink and Comcast to do with
internet via cable, not sure of the details. If the people Jean's husband
is trying to email are customers of that, then I suspect Freeserve won't be
able to get the problem fixed, no matter what they do. The only way to
reliably communicate would be for the recipients to use a different email
address like gmail or yahoo.

Thanks to those who have sent me emails already. Apologies for the
confusion - I knew what I meant so surely all you should have as well,
regardless of what I actually wrote?! (And if anyone gets mean about my
being unclear then be warned, I can pull out the "but I'm not well" card
faster than you can type your flames :-) )

I live in Canada now but my family roots are firmly placed in England (and
nearly all in East Anglia) so it is English sites I need information on.
I have tried Ancestry.co.uk but their information is currently limited to
those with surnames beginning with A or B (and I am looking for Randall in
this case) and I am not sure just what they will have when the rest is
released - I tried looking for some other relatives who I know were in WWI
(Braybrookes - some survived, some didn't) and there was nothing for any
of them.

I'm still hoping that people on this list will have the magic answer (and
the list is really quiet) so here is the original question: "Do any of you
genealogy whizzkids know where I can find any information about military
medals? My great uncle apparently won the Military Cross at some point
but no-one in the family seems to know more than that. He was born in
1891 so my guess would be the medal was awarded during WWI but it could
have been some other time I suppose. Any websites that might be useful?"

That would be System Administrator, Tamara :-) I have been one in my time
(though not internet related, just LANs and WANs) and have known quite a few
having been in the high tech industry for many years. However, I have never
heard of the abbreviation "sysad" before. This person deals with doing updates
as required to the system (adding and deleting bits, upgrading, etc.);
identifying any problems (hardware, software, firmware, whatever) and fixing
them; working with administrators for other systems that may be connected (as
most tough issues are related to interconnectivity in some way or other);
ensuring any and all licences, etc are current and correctly applied; lots of
other fascinating techy type stuff dependent on the system. I suggest that you
be happy that they are there and play nicely with them whenever there seems to
be an issue :-) They can be horribly powerful - use that in your favour!

2007-03-21 Thread Tamara P Duvall
I have a vague memory of seeing this one before... OTOH, I grew up with
"dirty little Johhny" jokes and all of them seem familiar by now:)

From: R.P.

A grade school teacher in Kentucky asked her students to use the word
"fascinate" in a sentence.

Molly put up her hand and said, "My family went to my granddad's farm,
and we all saw his pet sheep; it was fascinating."

The teacher said, "That was good, but I wanted you to use the word
'fascinate,' not fascinating."

Sally raised her hand. She said, "My family went to see Rock City and I
was
fascinated." The teacher said, "Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted
you

to use the word 'fascinate.'"

Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher hesitated because she had
been burned by Little Johnny before. She finally decided there was no
way

he could damage the word "fascinate" so she called on him.

Johnny said, "My aunt Gina has a sweater with ten buttons; but her
tits are so big, she can only fasten eight."

Go to http://www.rootsweb.com, click on mailing lists on the list along the
top of the page, and find the lists for military or wars or whatever, and
subscribe to teh lists that pertain to the appropriate war.

You'd also be surprised what you might find if you google the war or other
pertinent subject headings, and medals. There are actual web sites that
catalog them.

Hello Jean

I think that you are probably right in thinking that Earthlink have
gone over the top with their spam filters. That sort of thing does
happen from time to time with some ISPs. Last time it happened to me I
contacted my ISP and his SYS Admin (whatever/whoever that is!)
complained to the offending ISP and it got sorted pretty quickly. I
suggest that you or your DH contact Freeserve.
