[lace-chat] stone

A stone is 20 US pounds. I was taught by some Catholic religious

gained some weight to his mother in a letter, but had used American
weights, i.e. pounds and she was practically hysterical when she
thought he had gained 10 stone! (200 pounds!)

So how many US ounces in a US pound?

I know that in the UK a stone is 14 pounds and there are 16 dry ounces in a
pound. Also there are 100 US pounds in a hundredweight and in the UK 112
pounds in a hundredweight.

The UK there are 20 fluid ounces in a pint and gallon is 8 pints.
In the US there are 16 fluid ounces in a pint, and a US gallon is roughly 4
fifths of a UK one.

Even teaspoon and cups measurements are different, and this can cause no end
of problems cooking with a US recipe in the UK. Fortunately all my kitchen
measuring equipment has both measurements on.

[lace-chat] Helen your thoughts please

2008-08-22 Thread Wendy Davies
Hi All

Helen has been in touch this morning via email and has asked me to pass on her
thanks to you all that have sent their wishes, she is finding a great comfort
knowing that there are people out there wishing her well and thinking of her.
I have passed on your emails and she has said that she will send you a message
when she is able. Even though I have never met her we have been very close
and it is also a help to me knowing that you are thinking of her and that with
positive thoughts she will pull through. She told me this morning she is
feeling a lot more chipper and her headache is gone. Thank you all once
again.

In UK
16 ounces = 1 pound
14 pounds = 1 stone
but are the UK ounces the same as US ounces?

A UK ounce = 28.3495 grams, so
1 pound = 453.592 grams, and
1 stone = 6350.288 grams or 6.350288 Kg

[lace-chat] Germany, France Switzerland

2008-08-22 Thread Shirlee Hill
Hello!

Next week my husband I are leaving for a trip to Germany, France
Switzerland.  We are going to be staying in Karlsruhe, Paris Bern.  Are
there any great stores in these areas that we absolutely should not miss?
Other than lacemaking, I am interested in jewelry my husband is interested
in CDs.  It appears from what I've been able to find on the internet that
stores in these areas are not in operation on Sundays?

Blessings,
Shirlee in Tennessee

Hi,

Weight lbs and oz are the same, for volume oz to qts, and gallons are
different.

A stone is 14 lbs.
