I agree with Clay, Brugge and Brussels are 2 places to visit for a
lacemaker.

It's a little early in the year to know where there will be lace events. I
could give you more informations in 2 or 3 months. What's sure is that the
lace school of Binche
(http://www.plusoultre.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=77&Item
id=103 ) were I'm teacher has an exhibition of the lace works of their
students every year begin of september. There is no lace museum in Binche,
only a little lace shop. It's a very old town with medieval walls, it's
also known for it's carnaval (and mask museum). Here are some other links
for Binche : http://www.dentelledebinche.net

I spent two weeks in Belgium in September of last year, and can attest
to the fact that there is something to be seen anywhere she finds
herself!! While Belgium is a relatively small country, one could still
spend a day or more in each place, just exploring all there is to be
seen. So it would be helpful for us to know specifically where she will
be going.

For the Lacemaker, of course, Brugge is the place to be. This is where
the Kantcentrum is located, (and may be in their new location by
then...) along with numerous shops which provide supplies for
lacemakers. Brugge is also a tourist city, and people day-trip in from
the coastal areas where they are taking their holidays, so it is
bustling until later in September.

Brussels has a wealth of things to see, lace related. Specifically, the
Costume and Lace Museum is fantastic. Unfortunately, the lace
collection in the Royal Museum has been closed down permanently to make
room for other things that seem to draw more tourists. Of course, like
Brugges, Brussels has a "Lace Shop" on nearly corner. The lace in these
shops is mostly Chinese-made (but sport the label, "hand-made") or
machine made, but virtually all of these shops have collections of
"real" lace which one can see if interested (some shops don't keep it
out in view). The "real" lace is extremely expensive. I found a piece
which was made from a pattern set which I have, and which -
coincidentally - I was working on at the time, and it was priced at 950
Euros. I was satisfied with that price, but questioned whether I would
accept such a small amount for the work that was required for that piece.

Some of my most memorable days were spent exploring the countryside
dotted with small towns and farms and castles. There weren't many
sightings of lace in these areas, but I came away with a deep affection
for the country, and for my friend in Belgium who was my tourguide!

I'm envious that your friend will be going there! I would advise that
she invest is a travel guide of Belgium, and map out her agenda well in
advance. Anticipation is half the fun!!

Clay

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks

2006-06-16 Thread LiduinaJ
Dear Secret Pal,

I received your parcel Wednesday, it was a sunray after a gloomy day.

The day before was so sad : I first went to the funeral of a friend, in the
afternoon I learned that my mother-in-law was taken to hospital and in the
evening our old cat was run over by a car. One should be able to erase such
days !

Anyhow, thank you so much for the special goodies that you sent.

The magnetized notepads and magnets are already on the fridge.

The sewing kit will go in my suitcase so I'll take it with me in Spain next
month. I'll have something to do during my free time after the lace lessons
I'll give there. When it will be finished I'll put my lace tools for
demonstration in it and certainly the little cutter you also sent. This one
seems really convenient to cut threads close to your work.

I looked at the postcards also. You live in a beautiful region !

I'm looking forwards to next month when I will learn who you are.

Thank you again.

Liduina, from a sunny Belgium.

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you for my parcel which came today. I'm glad nothing wrong happened
to you, just a problem with your computer.

I love the glass bobbin with the willemite in it and the little stone hart
too. In the village where I live there were stone quarries till 1960, no
willemite but blue limestone. Now the quarries became a natural reserve and
the house of the quarry master became a stone museum. I'm tourist guide for
the town of Ath and also for the stone museum, so this present is really
appropriate and appreciated.

The hibiscus pattern is wonderful. I just finished a duchesse design and my
duchesse lace pillow is empty. Perhaps I will try this one and the pin cup
will go on the pillow also. I have pincushions but they don't fit for the
little duchesse pins, the pin cup will be perfect.

The pencils are welcome in the lace design equipment and a little note set
is always useful.

Thank you once again for the lovely parcel.

Liduina from a very windy and rainy Belgium.

Dear Secret Pal,

I received your parcel this morning.
I was a little affraid in restrospect for the glas bobbin when I remembered
how the postman throw it brutaly in the letterbox but everything was ok. The
bobbin was safe. It's really a nice bobbin with beautiful pearly shines.
You're lucky to have a friend who makes such beautiful bobbins.
Thank you also for the binche pattern from Anny Noben. I know her very well,
she's a nice and talented lady and I didn't have this pattern yet.

Thank you again,

Liduina from a rainy Belgium.

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thank You

Dear Secret Pal in New Jersey,

Your parcel arrived yesterday afternoon, much earlier than expected. It was a
lovely surprise !
I'm very honored to be a member of the Lost Art Lacers now. I spent all the
evening with my dictionary (I'm French speaking), reading your magazine and
the cookbook.
The commemorative bobbin is very nice also.
Chocolates, tea and honey sticks will be much appreciated. My youngest
daughter and I are tea lovers and when she's at home we allways have tea time
together. I've never seen honey sticks in Belgium, it's new for me. I find
it's very ingenious !

Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to learn more about you.

Liduina from a chilly Belgium.
