[lace-chat] lace postcard
Hi spiders I've recently obtained a postcard depicting a lacemaker, details are 3945 The "Wyndham" Series and it shows 'Pillow lace workers at Beer'. Nothing unusual as such about the card, it's one I've seen on numerous occassions. What has intrigued me is the message on the back and the comment about the post is also quite amusing, it seems nothing changes where Royal Mail is concerned! It is dated 2 September 1905 and postmarked Branscombe. It has been sent to Mrs Gibbs, Lock House, Roath Dock, Cardiff. The message reads -: Dear Mrs Gibbs I received the 3 sprigs safely, but have not yet received the one you intended posting a fortnight ago, I hope it has not got lost in the post. Shall be glad with as many as you can make please. Ida Allen Ida gives her address as Hole Farm Branscombe, nr Beer. Can anyone give me any further information about either Ida Allen or Mrs Gibbs please? I have been looking and I shall search again tonight at the family history centre, but so far I've not struck lucky. Another postcard that I picked up at the same time shows some sprigs of Honiton lace and a picture of a lady which I believe to be a Mrs Woodgate. It is postally dated 16 May 1911 Ottery St Mary, and the message on the reverse mentions that the lady in the picture was involved in making lace for the Queen's coronation (Victoria). Amazing what an old postcard can reveal isn't it. It also answers what I've been doing lately (re: an earlier question posed recently) - sorting and cataloguing my lace postcard collection a job that has been outstanding for absolutely ages and now that I'm retired as Chairman of Suffolk Lacemakers and have a little spare time to myself I'm trying to get a few outstanding jobs done. Now back to researching for my book! best wishes to you all Nicky in Suffolk To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] suffolk lacemakers
dear spiders i have just had the most awful shock. i have just been advised that the web site name, that was until recently, used by suffolk lacemakers has now been purchased by another company and is being used to directly link unsuspecting people to porn sites! we had used the web site for the past two years, but had begun having problems with access earlier this year, our isp host " freeola" were extremely unhelpful. when "nominet" informed me that to continue use of thename was going to cost £94.00 for a further two years I declined as we were unable to access the site and upload and/or download new or amended pages. i have contacted both the british police and "nominet" and have been informed that there is nothing i can do about this, it is legal! please be warned that there are "companies" out there watching for groups such as ourselves, church groups etc etc just waiting to get the domain name if it is allowed to lapse so that they can use it for their thoroughly disgusting and underhand purposes. please also know that this site is absolutely nothing to do with suffolk lacemakers or any member of suffolk lacemakers. nicky hoewener-townsend chairman suffolk lacemakers please excuse typing but i have had an accident and am only able to use one arm. [lace-chat] local council
Hi folks I just had to tell you about our local council. Delivered along with a lot of other freebie junk mail was a poster size foldout from our local authority. It contained lots of adverts which has generated the revenue to produce this amazing tomb of information. Poor sad sops that they've been. The council have gone to great lengths to inform us as to which week our various bins are to be collected ie blue and green week 1 black bins week 2. they have even produced a calender and a chart giving this information in great detail. They have gone to even greater lengths to inform us about the refuse collection service that will be produced over the festive Christmas/New Year season. The only problem is It is all for last Christmas and the calender of collections ends next month! It begs the question? Is this efficiency at its best ? or are the council just behind with the times? or perhaps the Post Office running to their usual schedule? Whatever, it certainly deserves a letter of complaint.. Bye for now Nicky in Suffolk. and still smiling vbg To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Lace 'At Home' - Essex/Suffolk, UK
I have been asked to post this message openly in reply as was the original message. Nicky in Suffolk ** Carol - in Suffolk UK. As the editor of Suffolk Lacemakers newsletter I would just like to point out that I am unable to include details of any event of which I have no knowledge. I am always requesting information about events to include in the SLM newsletter, because we endeavour to keep our members informed of such things. You know me, you have my address, you have sent copy to me before, you are a member of SLM and so receive a copy of our newsletter and know when it is published. It is up to you to let me know of your events in writing as is normal procedure. Your implication that I did not include your event in our newsletter is verging on slander which I do not take kindly to. Brian E Townsend Editor of Suffolk Lacemakers. Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 18:16:24 +0100 From: "Carol Adkinson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [lace-chat] Lace 'At Home' - Essex/Suffolk, UK Hi All, A great day was had yesterday! I hosted an 'At Home' Lacemaking Day - it was advertised in Essex Lace Makers newsletter, but unfortunately not advertised in the Suffolk Lace Makers Newsletter, so we had a lounge full of mainly Essex ladies - and my students - making lace, with a lot of gossip, and the new faces quickly became good friends! But - because we only had the Essex contingent this time, several there thought it would be a good idea to make sure that it was advertised a little more widely, so if anyone is in the UK, in the Suffolk area, between Ipswich and Colchester - or within reach of there - on June 22nd, get in touch with me, and I'll let you have directions to find the house. Although we live in a very small village (one general shop, a part-time post office, but umpteen pubs!) we are easy to reach as the A12 goes right beside the village. We met at about 10.30 am, and the last person left about 4.15 pm - they all brought their lunches, and those who had pillow stands brought them too. Coffee, tea and cakes were provided, my husband was banished to the study and the small upstairs TV room for the day - and it really was most enjoyable. The idea of the 'At Home' was, I think, formed over twenty-five years ago - it was going strong when I joined Essex Lace Makers about 1978, with ladies coming from all over the county - as well as Suffolk and a couple from Norfolk, if I remember rightly! - for a day making lace, so I was pleased to be able to revive these days. So - if anyone can manage to get to us, do let me know and I'll give you directions - we all enjoyed the day, and it would be nice to meet other local lace-makers, in a more relaxed setting, where we can make lace, chat, and get to know each other. [lace-chat] lace in Brussels
Hi folk I've no doubt that this one has been asked before, but a friend has asked about any museums, shops etc in Brussels that are of interest to a lacemaker? She will not be able to travel to Brugge. Can anyone suggest places to go to see etc? [lace-chat] Lace day's
Hi Spiders For anyone in Suffolk and in particular the Lowestoft area the place to be on April 9th is Carlton Colville for Suffolk Lacemakers second lace day of the year. We have Jo Firth and Geoff Mudge attending as suppliers and our speaker is Leslie Sercombe. Should be another good day, I'm very much looking forward to Leslie's talk "Is it Art?". Our first Lace Day of the year at Wickham Market was a sell out and a great day was had by all. Our next event will be on 21 May at Martlesham on the outskirts of Ipswich, it will incorporate our AGM, (but don't let that put you off), Makit and Richard Ives will be our suppliers for this day. Have a great day Nicky in Suffolk To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace-chat] Lacemakers Circle AGM
Hi Liz Saw your posting about the Lacemakers Circle AGM. My DH and I are planning to be there too, be nice to meet up with you. Will wear my arachne badge and amber spider brooch. Talking of badges, I have just been mounting my small but growing collection of lace group/guild badges. Do any of you have a badge for your lace group/guild that I could add to my collection? I will happily post you a lace bobbin or two in exchange (anywhere in the world). Nicky in Suffolk England Please put "Lace Badge" as the subject of your message so it stands out in the filtering more readily. [lace-chat] attract young lacemakers
Hi all One way of finding out about lace classes that I don't think has been mentioned is by asking at your local library. Suffolk Libraries have what they call "Suffolk Info Link", here they list all kinds of contacts for local groups/activities etc etc. You (or they will for you) access this information through the library computers I believe. It has been through this point of contact that many of my students have located me (or I put them in touch with whoever is nearest to them) as I am the contact listed for Suffolk Lacemakers. It would be interesting to know if other counties offer the same or a similar service through their libraries. [lace-chat] Lace spending
Hi Liz and spiders Sorry to burst your halcyon bubble Liz, but I'd have to disagree with you, we are not buying the same products for the same price, anything but. The cost of lacemaking materials has increased just like everything else. Look at the price for a book 10- 15 years ago, just had a look at one of my old Pam Nottingham books it cost £7.99 now the same book is nearer £16.99, I'd hardly call that the same price for the same thing! If you could by a Newnham pillow today, I purchased one of his beautiful block pillows, the first pillow I ever owned which is in pristine condition and being constantly, it cost me £33.65 (I still have the catalogue!) 17 years ago. I certainly wouldn't get that same pillow for that price today. You may well be spending the same amount today as some years ago, but are you in reality obtaining the same quantity of goods? Probably not. Don't misunderstand, I am not complaining as I'm very happy with the goods I purchase and am most certainly all for supporting our lace suppliers - and do so very regularly, but please don't think the prices are still the same they are not. Nicky in an overcast Suffolk (but Saturday is looking brighter I'm off to a Lace Day - and yes I will be supporting our wonderful suppliers) Liz said... What I have found very thought provoking is the talk about Newham's pillows as it made me think about the fact that I spend the same at a lace fair today, 2005 as I did back when Newhams were at fairs 15 years ago. This has made me realise that as lacemakers we are very lucky because we are buying the same products at the same price as we did 15 years ago - great for us - not so great for the suppliers. [lace-chat] question about weather?
Hi all Yep its a Brit going on about the weather, but then I know some of you out there live in the area I'm enquiring about. My DH and I are looking to visit across the pond next year, in the Maryland/Virginia area of the US. (Probably around Montogomery MD; Richmond & Williamstown VA).What I would like is an indication of the weather/climate in this part of the world, we don't want to visit during a period of cold/snowy weather nor do we want it to be excessively hot and sticky so what months are the best time to visit - I know it is not a guarantee just a guide. many thanks Nicky in Suffolk (where we didn't get the tons of snow forecast and today is cold but bright) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Will the real dummy please stand up!
I had just finished reading the various snippets about dummies when I received a phone call, having just about recovered from laughing I just had to share this gem with you. I was recently asked to produce a new Village Directory - a list of all clubs, groups etc in our village, detailing where, when they meet etc and a contact phone number, I was also asked to produce a similar directory listing all the businesses in the village. My husband and I visited or spoke to every business in the village to ensure we obtained the latest and most up to date information and to double check the contact telephone number. We also carried out a very thorough proof check - what we hadn't accounted for was dummies! Well the said directory has just been delivered to every household in the village and I have also just received a phone call from the owner of a business in the village to say that we have printed the wrong phone number. I remember the business well - infact when we did the proof reading we noticed that the number given was not the same as that in the regional phone book - but as our copy of the regional phone book was quite out of date and some of the village phone numbers have been changed in the past two years - we went back to the business to ask the manager which was the correct phone number and were told the one we had been given was correct. It turns out that the number confirmed by the manager is their personal home phone number !!! What a dummy, or should that be village idiot? [lace-chat] bobbins from Ballarat
Hi spiders Have just been able to successfully re-subscribe again! Computers ouch! Anyway, wonder if someone, (probably David from down under?) can answer my query. One of my students has just returned from six weeks in Australia (rained most of the time where she was), and on return to class began to recount her adventures. She began telling us about a museum that she visited in a little place that we could never have possibly heard of- Ballarat!!! Two of us immediately said we did know of it, me because of arachne and another student because she had ancestors who moved to Ballarat some while ago, the last living relative there died just a year or two back. Anyway my question is the lady bought some bobbins in a shop there Criterion Drapery Stores, Sovereign Hill, and very nice they are to, but she has no idea who made them, the lad in the shop didn't even know what they were so she thought asking who made them might be pushing it, they both have a little disc attached by wire through the spangling hole with what looks like a crown logo on it. Can anyone tell me who made these bobbins please? Hi Spiders Have been having untold problems with some low life who has infiltrated my e.mail and caused untold problems, they've evaded every MacAfee spam/filter security and so I've had to change my address with immediate effect to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Do these people not have better things to do with their lives is their a link to children being on school holiday and simply being bored?
