Re: [lace-chat] Re: Tax Free Days
Joy wrote that an attendant told her it was illegal to reveal what percentage of petrol price is a tax charge. Well, it isn't illegal in this country and a morning paper has published a league table countries showing the percentage of taxation. The US, according to this, has the lowest price and the lowest percentage taxation. They have converted your prices to litres and, assuming their maths are correct, the pump price is 30p per litre of which tax is 8p per litre which is 27% of the price. In contrast, the UK price is 83p per litre of which tax is 61p which is 73% of the pump price. It is the dearest in Europe and the tax comes in two parts. There is a basic tax/import tax or whatever (I can'r remember the exact term given I'm suffering from a senior moment) with VAT (value added tax) of 17.5% calculated after the original tax. So, Helene, you are far from being the only person to be brassed off by two taxes on the same item; every driver in the UK is with you on that one:-) patricia in Wales [EMAIL PROTECTED] P.S. Hello everyone, Tamara was asking about petrol prices in non English speaking countries and thought there are too few of us to comment. My reason for not writing anytihng in the first place was pure laziness. All those different gallons and currency changes... ;-) I do not drive very often, but asked my fellow worker. The current prize here in Finland is 1,20 Euros per litre. According to the web page Margery sent: 1 US gallon is 3,8 litres. That would make 1 gallon cost 4,56 Euros. According to OANDA currency calculator: (Link sent to the list long time ago, do not personally know about its reliability.) 4,56 Euros is 5,58 US Dollars 4,56 Euros is 3,04 British Pounds Most of the prize is different taxes. I am surprised to realise that according to Jean in Poole the Brits pay more (82.2 Pounds per litre makes 3.12 Pounds per gallon) than we do. I have always thought that we have the most expencive petrol on earth. That is the impresson you get when listening to news in which the prize is commented. :) Happy lacing! And it is not just income tax which has increased. Council tax has increased by more than the rate of inflation each year for the last several years. Seems as though taxes are an universal gripe! Our rates (Council Taxes) have been stable for the past few years at, for us, approx $1200 per annum. ( US$1904 approx) Petrol here is amazing. Currently $1.24 per litre (US$1.97, or approx $7.80 per gallon!) Our income tax, is a graduated tax - the more you earn, the higher the tax, i.e. one rate to $28,000, .24 cents in the dollar, then up to .33 cents in the dollar. Company taxes are different again. Then everyone pays a flat 12.5% on everything one buys. i.e. a goods and services tax. that is generally calculated in the price displayed. You very rarely see any signage that says plus GST, thankfully. At least as we live in what is regarded as a poor town, where the median gross income is very low, we are included in a state run medical subsidy scheme, and we can visit the doctor for $15 (US$23.80), so we do have some benefits ;-), specially as hubby and I are asthmatics.
