Gratuitous advice: when you get out of rehab and the prescribed exercises have gotten too easy, sign up at a weight-lifting place. Pick one where athletes work out -- the staff will be accustomed to helping people who are working at the edge of their ability, and will know how to work out without getting hurt. Avoid like the plague any studio with decorative mirror tile instead of plain full-length mirrors for checking your form. (Good form is *very* important.) Also avoid any place where the guy who shows you around gets confused and has to start over if you interrupt his spiel. Nautilus was best when I did it twenty or thirty years ago: the machines are designed so that you can push right to the edge without going over. Of course, you can hurt yourself if you don't engage brain -- when the coach tells you to do only one repeat with an absurdly-low weight the first time you use the calf machine, believe him! -- Joy Beeson http://roughsewing.home.comcast.net/ west of Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. Re: [lace-chat] Re-assurance Please .....
Please don't be put off by being told it will be painful after. Not necessarily. I was a nurse involed with hip replacements and have many friends who have had them. Two friends have had both hips done. Only one complained of after pain, she also did not exercise and has not had a good result. I have had both my feet operated on, both at the same time, they shaved the bone down on both feet, I have had a webber C fracture, both leg and ankle broken with the ankle dislocated. This was plated and screwed. Later plate and screws removed and I tell you what I have had worst period pains and childbirth pains. Go girl, look forward to your new lease of life. Carol, I wish you all the best for your surgery. Focusing on how well you will feel when you recover will help you over the pre-op panic. Friends and family who have had this operation all say that the post-op exercises are as important as the surgery and those who have done them regularly seem to have made better recoveries than those who haven't. Will be thinking of you on Tuesday. Lesley To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. Re: [lace-chat] Re-assurance Please .....
Hi Carol, I checked the lunar phase for the 7th, and it will be a few days before the new moon. Sounds weird, but they've done studies and found that surgeries done around before and during the new moon phase have less complications and less bleeding issues than surgeries done around the full moon. It's along the lines of the way the moon effects tides. So the change of surgery date is a good thing. I understand your anxiety. Good thing is that the anesthetics and pain meds they use these days can make it a lot easier. Just to prepare you...expect the first few days after the surgery to be painful. It will take a little while before you're up to skipping. But once it heals, I'm sure you'll be doing those cartwheels. You're in my prayers. Hi Spiders All, I was supposed to be going into hospital for a hip replacement - long awaited, and would be turning cartwheels with joy, if the hip wasn't too bad at present! - which was scheduled for the 15th May. That gave me a few weeks to get over the shock, I thought, but this morning at 7.40 I received a call from the hospital to say the op. had been brought forward to the 7th May - next Tuesday!Needless to say, I will be so glad to be able to walk without pain, sleep without pain, stand up and sit down etc., but I am terrified at the thought of going into hospital. I have never had a serious hospital operation before, but am consoling myself with the fact that this time next week, it will all be over, and I will be skipping about a bit like a spring lamb... So - please all think of me on Tuesday! Carol - in North Norfolk UK 'Deliver is, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our Day.'
