I usually just get the cds and rip them. That is the easiest way I have
done it. Sometimes I even post the data to MusicBrainz. (CD's include
all regular sessions + priesthood session with words and music across

That's a great idea James! I'll add that to my list of things to add to the

I used mplayer to snag part of the stream and just dumped the audio
out to an mp3. Look into the -ss parameter. I did have to grab the
entire 800MB QuickTime movie of the Priesthood Session ASL version. I
really wanted that BYU Men's Chorus version of "Be Still My Soul" :-)

That's why I won't post a link to my mp3 here. That and I just
listened to it on my better headphones and it sounds pretty bad. I'm
guessing going from mp3 decoded into Audacity and then re-encoded back
out of Audacity is the reason for that. Might have to check my bit

[Ldsoss] JLV- Facebook App Proposal Ldsoss Digest, Vol 45, Issue 4

2007-10-08 Thread James Lee Vann
I had an idea this morning, but I'm not really smart enought to do it. If
no one is interesteed, I might get around to it eventually, but if anyone
wants to make an app like this- it'd be way cool!

There is an app for Facebook that lets you choose the countires in the world
that you have been to, and place a map on your profile showing where you've
been and where you want to go.

I was thinking of a similiar app for LDS temples. You could display on the
map a world map, showing the location of each temple open, under
construction, and announced, then, athe user could select which temples they
have been to/attended. You could even mash it with Google Earth, so that
you can click on a temple and be taken to its location on Google Earth/
Maps...

So, those of you that are smarter than me with PHP, if you want to, have at
it. Let me know if I can help.

The American Sign Language version of Priesthood session is up. It has the

I've wondered this myself. I like to listen to conference on my way to
work. I tend to get more out of it then when the kids are bouncing all over
me when watching it on TV.

As for the Priesthood session - which I do not always get to - I end up
using text to speech software. Not as good as the real voice. Why not make
the mp3's available for that session?

Re: [Ldsoss] Script to download conference mp3s....

2007-10-08 Thread Pete Whiting
This may not be as complete/robust as Matt's script, but accomplishes
something similar:

wget -O - http://lds.org/conference/sessions/display/0,5239,23-1-775,00.html|
perl -e 'while(<>){next if /Complete/; `wget -nc $1\n`
if(/\"(http:.*mp3)\"/); }'

You need to figure out for yourself, each conference, what the url is that
contains the links to all the mp3s you want (the above url works for English
mp3s from Oct 2007 conference).

The script depends on wget and perl.

All of the mp3s end up in the current directory.

IANAL, but I think the church probably does mind if you redistributed
the music. (If not, why don't they provide it, since the speakers
often make reference to it. They seem pretty strict about
redistribution, plus a lot of the hymns the church doesn't "own").

I agree. In fact, I downloaded the full mp3 of one session and used
audacity and it was really easy to select one of the songs I liked and
export it as its own mp3. I don't know if I should share that mp3 (it

[Ldsoss] Conference music

2007-10-08 Thread Dan Hanks
Hi folks,

Just curious as to whether any one knows of a way to listen to the
music of General Conference without having to download the MP3 for the
entire session. I can do that, or listen to it via the conference
DVDs, but it would be nice if high-quality MP3s of the conference
music were available (in case folks from the lds.org site are lurking
within earshot :-). There are some breathtakingly beautiful
arrangements that show up at conference.

Also curious if anybody knows about the availability of conference
audio/video for Conferences prior to when the Church started posting
online?

Thanks for any pointers,
