[Leaf-user] Receive logs via serial ports on Oxygen

2002-02-08 Thread Munday, Merrick
Title: Receive logs via serial ports on Oxygen

I'd like my Oxygen box to receive incoming logs from two other machines over serial connections. I can view the incoming data on both serial ports using minicom, but I'm having trouble getting the data into a file.

I can cat /dev/ttyS0 /var/log/ttyS0.log but the resulting file is a mess with lots of weird spaces in it.

I tried using logserial from ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/serial/logserial-0.3.tar.gz which produces normal looking log files. However, although it works fine on either of the serial ports individually, I get a Can't open /dev/ttySx error when I try to invoke it twice, even with the -b daemonize switch.

If someone could point me in the right direction on this I'd be grateful. What's the best way to get data off multiple serial ports and into separate files?

Thanks!

RE: [Leaf-user] LEAF routing private IP space w/ IPSEC

2002-02-08 Thread Barry Martin

You have to fake out the routing. For the hub site you need to shorten
the subnet mask. For example. If using a /16 subnet mask for all
sites, then in the ipsec.conf file on all connections, specify that your
internal site is a /8.

Check out this site for details:
http://jixen.tripod.com/
and look at this section: Using a central Ipsec gateway as a tunnel
hub

hi,

I have a question on this with a twist.

If I have several nodes connected to a sentral HUB
via IPSec, how can I route from node A to node B?
Right now, the HUB can ping every node, but nodes
can only pin the HUB.

Thanks,
j.

I have been informed that Panda Antyvirus Platinum on Windows XP reports
that the file /usr/bin/tr contained as part of ipsec.lrp (apparently
version
1.5 or earlier, since there is no tr command included in my latest ipsec
1.91 package) is infected by the Linux/Obsidian.E virus.

I'm currently trying to verify this, and track down exactly what the
Obsidian virus is supposed to do. If anyone has any information on this
virus, or can help verify the file is/is not infected, I would greatly
 appreciate it.

I currently have no idea if this is simply a false positive, or if there
is
actually a problem, but wanted to let everyone know just in case.

FYI: If memory serves, the tr and column programs included in my older
IPSec packages came from an aquaintence in San Diego, who managed to get
IPSec working before I did and sent me his LRP package. I used his
versions
of these two utilities since they were smaller than the Debian
counterparts.
Since the programs work properly, are quite small overall, and smaller
than
their stripped Debian cousins, if there is a virus it can't be very large
or
 complex.

I never did test that package, sorry. I put it together on the assumption
that I would eventually use it, but that never happened. I apologize for
the
problems, I can build a better package if you would like, and verify that
 this one works first.

If you do, please make note of the changes I made to your original
package...notes are in the change log for Dachstein:

http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/cstein/files/diskimages/dachstein-CD/chang
es.txt

You may not want all of the changes, but there are at least some that you'll
probably want to include.

Also, IIRC, I *did* try using the netsnmpd and netsnmpu packages, and was
able to obtain the expected results. I don't have a handy test system at
the moment, but I hope to try this again in a day or two.

[1] I have rolled-my-own and it works.

[2] You said:
Broke single package into two pacakges:
netsnmpd - snmp daemon
netsnmpu - snmp utilities

As I noted in another post:
[3] net-snmp is really three (3) different pieces:

snmp -- apps tools to do everything snmp
snmpd -- facility to accept queries send traps
snmptrapd -- facility to receive snmp traps

It seems to me that these ought to be kept in separate packages, albeit
dependent on installing the snmpd package. Although, it is common to
want to remotely manage a firewal/router, I find it doubtful that these
ought to receive/manage incoming traps; nor, may it be too common to
want to query other hosts from the firewall?

I suggest:

netsnmp.lrp
netsnmpd.lrp
netsnmptrapd.lrp

[3] I also have a working snmpd.conf, including working View-Based
Access Control Model (vacm) examples. In fact, my snmpd.conf does *not*
even mention community: public ;

[4] A little more testing and Mike Noyes finalizing my leaf/sourceforge

[Leaf-user] Bering and DOC2000

2002-02-08 Thread Bao C. Ha

Hi guys,

I have been able to bring the Jacques Nilo's Bering
Leaf distribution up on a Disck-On-Chip (DOC2000)
based system. I am using the Beta 2 since there
seems to be problems with modify the Beta 3 floppy
image. Following is the summary of changes to make
it happens.

(1) The DOC2000 has one partition. It is used as
an ext3 filesystem. The content of the floppy image
is put on the DOC's partition.

(2) Grub.

I am using grub to boot up from DOC. Following is
the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

default 0
timeout 5

title=Linux with video card and keyboard
kernel (dc0,0)/linux ramdisk_size=1536 init=/linuxrc \
root=/dev/ram0 boot=/dev/nftla1,ext3 LRP=root,etc,local,\
modules,pump,keyboard,shorwall,dnscache,weblet,dhcpd,ppp,\
pppoe,log,libz,sshd,sshkey,ssh,sftp
initrd (dc0,0)/initrd.lrp

Notes:
- The kernel command is all on one line.
- There is no PKGPATH. That will hang the DOC2000.
Mtd devices can't be mounted at multiple points at the
same time.

(3) Loading required modules at boot time.

The /boot/etc/modules is changed to load the following
modules: (the order is very important to detect nftl on
DOC2000)

mtdcore
docecc
doc2000
docprobe
nftl
mtdchar
mtdblock
jbd
ext3

There is probably no need to load mtdchar and mtdblock.
Both the jbd and ext3 modules can be replaced by another
fs module, like ext2, if ext2 file system is to be used
for the DOC2000.

These modules are also downloaded into the
/boot/lib/modules directory

(4) Add the following to the
/var/lib/lrpkg/root.dev.mk file to create the /dev/nftla
devices.

#DOC nftl
makedevs nftla b 93 0 0 8 s null 21
makedevs nftlb b 93 16 0 8 s null 21

That is all!

Thanks.

RE: [Leaf-user] Possible virus?

2002-02-08 Thread Jeff Newmiller

I may sound really stupid, but I thought that Linux and Unix did not have

Normally, user permissions make virus transmission very difficult in
Linux. Under LEAF, few if any user accounts are used, so the chance of
propagation would be higher. However, it is a very constrained
environment, and if you use sensible DMZ or isolationist security
policies, this should not be an issue.

[Leaf-user] DOC2000 on S.B.C.

2002-02-08 Thread JMullan

If anyone is interested in my implementation of LEAF/LRP for disk-on-chip,
I have set up my web site with instructions and files for experimentation
and/or full use. One list member has already successfully tried it. I
would be interest in more feedback.

You can point your browser to:

http://mullan.dns2go.com/

and select INTERNET from the left-hand menu bar. Sometimes the site is
down (gremlins - I call them grandkids!) put their hands where the don't
belong but I try to keep it running.

I hope to also put up a couple of pictures of the actual unit (like a
trophy, if you will).

[Leaf-user] Backup configuration before software update

2002-02-08 Thread Bao C. Ha

How do I back up the setup and configuration
before I update a software package? Basically,
I have the shorewall 1.2.5 lrp package from the
Bering image. I would like to go to shorewall
1.2.6. Backing up the etc.lrp does not work,
as no Shorewall-related info is saved.

Thanks.

[Leaf-user] LCD Proc

2002-02-08 Thread John Mullan

Hello Jack.

Can you tell me how to make use of lcdd.lrp and lcdproc.lrp??

I can see the packages load with the others. If I have a working piece
of LCD hardware, would something show up automatically? If not, how do
I set things up so that something shows up on the LCD?

Thanks

Haven't the foggiest -- those are CS's packages. I'm just mirroring all
the packages I know about, largely as an exercise in learning Zope.

Linux/Obsidian.E virus.
Read the article describing ELF header viruses with from the link
provided by Kenneth.

The only place I can find a reference to the elfXray program is in
that particular link.

There are two parts: the server (LCDd) and the client (lcdproc). Once
the server is loaded, you should see a display as long as you've told
the server all the details of what sort of LCD you have and so on.
When you load lcdproc, it should start giving you lots of data (of
whatever you've specified).

LCDd is finicky about options, as it's option parsing is pretty bad -
if things act strange, then move the options from one side of the
command line to the other...
