However, about once a week, the link fails (probably a provider problem)

This is what the normal situation for ppp0 going down and up looks like if I
do it on demand.

Also please clarify what you mean by eventually the system stops trying.

From the log output it seems that the system stops trying to bring up the
interfaces.

The problem may be in the details of how your PPPoE connection gets set up,
in particular how the rotuer communicates locally with the DSL modem. PPPoE
setup requirements imposed by ISPs vary a lot (who is your ISP, BTW? I know
PacBell uses the Enternet 300 Windows PPPoE client, or did bak when I
struggled with a PPPoE connection), and dealing with your problem may
require information on the details of your ISP's setup instructions (for
 Windows).

My modem is a GNet BB0050 modem.
My ISP is Golden Triangle -- golden.net

I did not receive any specific instructions for setup: it was basically,
Install the Enternet 300 software, add your username and password, and then
connect. Is there any setup instructions that you were thinking of?

[leaf-user] Stopping DHCPD logging

2003-01-16 Thread Arcana
Hello,

I get a LOT of the following in my syslog:

Jan 16 23:27:38 firewall dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.1.2 from
00:80:c6:f8:62:c6 via eth1
Jan 16 23:27:38 firewall dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.1.2 to 00:80:c6:f8:62:c6
via eth1
Jan 16 23:27:38 firewall dhcpd: send_packet: Operation not permitted
Jan 16 23:27:59 firewall dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.1.1 from
00:e0:29:2c:ba:6d via eth1
Jan 16 23:27:59 firewall dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.1.1 to 00:e0:29:2c:ba:6d
via eth1
Jan 16 23:27:59 firewall dhcpd: send_packet: Operation not permitted
Jan 16 23:28:42 firewall dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.1.2 from
00:80:c6:f8:62:c6 via eth1
Jan 16 23:28:42 firewall dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.1.2 to 00:80:c6:f8:62:c6
via eth1
Jan 16 23:28:42 firewall dhcpd: send_packet: Operation not permitted

I suppose that I could simply change the two target machines to use static IPs
but I'd prefer not to do that, since DHCP is more portable for various
network configurations.

However my logs are all filled up with this and I'd really like it to stop.
The DHCPD package offers no visible options for logging. The DHCPD man pages
do mention a little bit about logging: the -d option to log to stdout. This
means that there is one apparent way to stop logging:

1) Edit init.d script
2) In the line to start dhcpd, type: dhcpd -d 21 /dev/null

but that doesn't seem so nice.

Any other ideas? Thank you,

Re: [leaf-user] Out of Disk Space on Bering module loading

2003-01-13 Thread Arcana

Since you're using Bering, and you have 32MB of RAM, you can increase
the ramdisk size using the following parameters:
(take from the excellent Bering Installation guide, located at
 http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/binstall.html)
this is in section 6.2, Edit the syslinux.cfg file

Ahh... I wasn't aware that this would be done here.

The docs are quite good, really.

They are. That's one reason I went to Bering (before I was a Dachstein
user but couldn't figure out how to block certain sites).

~~

But I'm still interested to know:

Is there a way though to mount an IDE hard drive to a location like /
(root)or /var? I'll search the docs again but I couldn't figure it out
after spending a weekend with Bering and my computers. The syslinux
configs seem to define sizes of RAM disks only and if I try to mount the
hard drive to / or /var using /etc/fstab, it doesn't mount properly.

Thank you,

To be quite honest with you, I don't think any of the developers have
even considered doing this as an option. If you move /var to a harddrive,
you might as well use any other Linux distribution. LEAF is designed
to be run out of a ramdisk.

Well, one reason I asked is because the packages and the configuration of the
LEAF are dead-convenient... much better than any other Linux distribution out
there that I've ever seen. I'd use it whether it's installed on a hard drive
or put on a RAM disk.

My other concern is that if I install too many packages I'll actually run out
of physical RAM.

[leaf-user] Out of Disk Space on Bering module loading

2003-01-12 Thread Arcana
Hello,

I have an IDE drive using Bering. The system boots properly using the IDE
drive, but is still limited to a 6 MB Ramdisk. I run out of space as I'm
trying to load all of my modules.

My IDE drive has two partitions:
/dev/hda1, msdos, about 20MB
/dev/hda2, ext3, about 200MB

My machine also has 32 MB of RAM.

I would like to increase the space for runtime by doing either:

1) increase the size of the RAM disk so I can load all of my modules
2) put the / partition on /dev/hda2 (or /usr, or /var, etc).

Is there a way to do either of these? I tried changing the ROOT parameter in
the syslinux.cfg but that doesn't do it. I also tried mounting /dev/hda2 on
/ in /etc/fstab but that doesn't do it either. Anyone else know what to do?
