Re: [leaf-user] Is my NIC the bottleneck?

2004-04-15 Thread Gustav_Schaffter

Your ISP's theoretical 768 Kilo bps compared to your NIC's theoretical 10
Mega bps.

Me thinks your 10Mb NIC is not guilty.

Do you run your DSL modem as a modem only, or does it do DHCP, DNS and
firewall as well?

should be able to do faster downloads, but am not sure
 where I'm getting bottlenecked.

Eric, list,

Having installed, configured and put in place a Bering firewall, I read
more and more about the Bering derivative called Bering uClibc.

The latest release was in January 2004 (unless I'm missing something :-).

Maybe I should have used this version instead?

Thanks Erik for taking the time with the distro.

I don't know how to thank people enough for their work in the Open Source
community.
The small additions that I sometimes provide feel like a fart in cosmos
compared to your efforts.

The fact that you have acknowledged a future for Bering has encouraged me
and I'm configuring a Bering V1.2 diskette as I write this.

One question that comes to mind for the future of Bering is of course if
there are any ideas for a 2.6 based Bering distro?

[leaf-user] Future development

2003-01-21 Thread Gustav_Schaffter
Hi,

I'm new to the list, and I have not even tried to install LEAF yet. I have
read the subjects of the FAQ.

Since it's getting too hard to maintain my RH installation on my 486
router/firewall, I'm looking for any of these 'specialized distributions'.
I've been searching the 'Net to try to find the 'best' distro for my needs
and whishes.

I've come to the conclusion that LEAF will most likely come very close.
Still:

- Are there any plans on porting LEAF to the 2.4 series of kernels and most
importantly, are there any plans on replacing ipchains with iptables?

- If yes, then are there any rough estimates on when such an effort might
potentially be undertaken?

I couldn't find any pointers to this subject in the FAQ. (Did I miss
something? Pointers to TFM appreciated.)

N.B.
This is *not* a *request*.
I highly appreciate all of those taking their private time to develop this
distribution. I participate in other efforts so I understand how difficult
it can be.
My intention is just to understand what is the projected future for LEAF,
as part of my decision process.

My very best regards
Gustav

[leaf-user] Etherlink III 509 with 3c59x.o

2003-01-21 Thread Gustav_Schaffter
Hi,

One more question before I start. ;-)

I have downloaded Bering 1.0 and I'm looking for a network module.

I have two 3Com Etherlink III 509 cards in this 486 box.

Will the module 3c59x.o work for 509 cards? (The name seems to indicate
otherwise.)

but I had failed to find

Thanks again ;-)

I don't know for certain, but I doubt it. You could always insmod
