[leaf-user] Leaf presentation

2002-07-16 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi All,

I started making a leaf powerpoint presentation to use during
an aka-session (free evening sessions here at work).
I am working for a training center in Belgium;
every 2 or 3 weeks we have some free evening sessions about a theme
that is not covered in any courses. So I decided to do one over leaf.

And I could use some input on the following subjects.

Leaf vs Internet Connection sharing.
Leaf vs wingate; sygate; winroute whatever.
Leaf vs win2k server doing nat.
Leaf vs cisco/pix???/watchguard???.
Leaf vs Broadband dedicated routers.

Especially the last one is rather difficult to tackle.

Once its finished I will probably publish it somewhere for proofreading.

The Why LRP document at http://www.monkeynoodle.org/lrp/LRP-why.html
gives some of those answers -- however, you're right that if compared
feature-to-feature it's hard to justify spending an hour or two on
building a LEAF system instead of buying a box for $50-$100. However,
that observation quickly changes if you decide to change something down
the road. Want to add wireless ethernet? You can buy another box for
$200, or you can add a single card to your LEAF box for $100. Want to
make a DMZ? Most of those home routers don't support a DMZ, or if they
do they only route to it, no ACLs. Want to port-forward to an internal
service? Many home routers can't do that either. Want to have the router
manage your PPPoE or PPPoA logins so that you don't need the client
software on your PC? LEAF can do that, but I doubt that Linksys can.

What exactly are you looking for. Are you suggesting specific reasons why
LEAF is the better choice over the other lists? If this is the case, I
assume you are just looking for a bullet type comparison. I've used only
WinNT for an alternative to LEAF, although I was never satisfied with WinNT.
To be quite honest, my biggest reasoning is the very simple (for some) and
straightforwardness of a console. I really dislike the GUI based wizards
that are used for setting up LANs. Another item to consider the sheer price
difference, not just the cost of software. Chances are, that if you are
running an NT or Cisco based solution, you'll be paying a certified engineer
for something that most anyone can tackle through a LEAF/LRP box. Total
cost of ownership and operations between the varying options. I can
guarantee that the cost savings are substantial. This project was how I was
able to start integrating Linux in our office.
