[leaf-user] configuring 2 isa cards solved, thanks

2004-08-25 Thread Hctor
Thanks to all for your reply. I had testing both
bering and bering uclibc.

Under bering I had to load 8390 module first, followed
by a trick. I made a copy of ne module with another
name, like ne1 like instance, then load one interface
with ne module and the other with module ne1, in my
case detailing io and irq, perhaps was unuseful detail
irq, but I will test again to comment about it.

Under bering uclibc I had to load crc32 module before
8390 and ne modules. I did not test without load 8390
yet. ne interfaces was loaded with trick described
above.

But meanwhile bering run succesfully I am not able to
run b-uclibc, with some testings I found that the
network listen to the router in both ways, but it can
reach the internet, perhaps a nameserver trouble.

Rather, I had found that the speed is lower compared
against a Win9x connected directly, but the same when
compared with my mandrake box router/firewall. How can
I improve the speed ? I had setup the mtu (1000 -
1452), that really change the speed but I cannot
increase the speed untill now. Is it affected by
shorewall setup, my switch, the networks interfaces ?.
or simply is a modem (zyxel 642m) specially designed
for win9x ?

How important is to load dnsmasq package ?

Thanks newly

[leaf-user] configuring 2 isa cards

2004-08-24 Thread Hctor
Thanks for your reply.
I had edit and backup modules through leaf menu to
setup 2 isa cards . Moreover I got configure an old
bering with pci cards succesfully.

Previously under DOS I had configured each card with
irq 5 io 0x300 and irq 11 and 0x320. Is it important
if they are configured like jumperless or plug 'n play
?

I had read that isa modules should be loaded twice, is
not it ?.

Thanks newly

I'm afraid that these questions are a bit difficult for me to understand.
Please forgive me if I am responding to the wrong questions.

OK. So you know the basics of using modules and modules.lrp on LEAF. Good.
But if there is a mistake in what you did, we will not be able to help you
spot it from this sort of general description. If you want help with this
part, please answer the questions I and others have previously asked. In
particular, we simply MUST see what (if any) actual error the module
installer (insmod) reports.

Previously, I forgot to ask this one: Are you certain that the cards are
NE2000 cards? How?

Previously under DOS I had configured each card with
irq 5 io 0x300 and irq 11 and 0x320. Is it important
if they are configured like jumperless or plug 'n play

The ne.o module needs to be told what io base values the cards are at; it
cannot reliably autodetect that (it can autodetect irq values). Since you
need to *tell* the module these values, you need to *know* them. I don't
know how you would know them if you used PnP to configure them (probably
via the BIOS, or maybe with isapnp if it is available). So I think your
best approach is to configure the cards manually, as you have done.

I had read that isa modules should be loaded twice, is
not it ?.
It depends on the specific module. For ne.o, the answer is NO. A single
installation of it can manage 2 or more NICs.

the config should go like this
ne io=0x300,0x320 irq=5,11
Have you checked that you have the correct io irq for those cards?
Is the correct driver in /lib/modules with depencies met?
What messages do you have in logs/booting?

This response needs a bit of clarifying. See below.

the config should go like this
ne io=0x300,0x320 irq=5,11
This is an entry in /etc/modules . It needs to be preceded by an entry for
a module that ne.o depends on, called (I think) 8390. Usually, ne.o can
detect IRRs and only needs the io= part specified explicitly.

From the command line (for testing purposes), you would, as root, enter
two commands:

insmod 8390.o
insmod ne.o io=0x300,0x320
Of course, versions of both modules appropriate to your kernel need to be
present in your modules.lrp package.

Have you checked that you have the correct io irq for those cards?
Is the correct driver in /lib/modules with depencies met?
What messages do you have in logs/booting?
If you still have problems, you really need to post either relevant log or
dmesg entries about module configuration at boot/int, or the EXACT results
of your running the commands by hand.

Also, did not get up those interfaces is an ambiguous problem
descirption. Do you mean that the interfaces are not created or that they
are not initialized? After boot/init, see if the interfaces exist with the
command ip link show or by looking in /proc/net/dev for entries for them.
If they exist, then the modules part is okay, and you need to figure out
why they are not getting configured (that is, not getting IP addresses
assigned to them). I mention this because getting an interface up usually
refers to configuring the interface, not to creating it.
