RE: [leaf-user] satellite with bering

2003-01-29 Thread Andrew G.Gray
Hi Tony,

No the satellite is not 2 way, we have to dial up to establish the link. There is no
noticeable lag normally and the connection, for the most part, is quite fast. We do
have
some problems with the satellite path on occasions but I believe they are mostly
caused by
the ISP and weather conditions.

HI Andrew,

Is it a two way connection, or do you have to dial up the ISP with a modem
for the return trip? What about the lag? Is there one? If so, how long is
it usually? I am happy with cable modem right now, but the idea of
satellite, especially two way sat. with the same speed and low latency would
be very interesting.

Thanks

Tony

I have a Dachstien CD box running Satellite from iHug here in Australia. I
simply downloaded the drivers from the ISPs web site for the Kernel version
and installed them. The system has been up for over a month and works well
when the ISP gives us a link from the satellite.

I am thinking about getting oneway satellite internet access from
http://www.nebulink.com or http://www.copperlink.net/satnet/index.shtml
(they both resell the same service). I am wondering if anyone has gotten
this to work with bering or any of the other similar fw's out there. If
so please let me know how you did it etc.
thanks
Paonia

Is that a PCI card that interfaces to the satellite dish? Yes
What make and model?sm200d
What type of cable runs from the dish to the PCI card? coax run was in place before I
ever
saw the installation.
What drivers.o are needed? No drivers.o
needed. The downloaded files contain an
executable, a config file and a couple of scripts.

Just curious,

Though I don't have sattelite, I can take a few guesses.
So you can stop reading if you'd like :)

Anytime you try to connect pieces of a WAN that use
different protocols, ATM -- Ethernet, X25 -- Ethernet,
Frame Relay -- ATM, Sattelite (?) -- Ethernet,
DSL -- Ethernet, as examples, you need a router.

So these companies rent us a black box and out of the
back end of that box comes a 10Base-T port, complete
with your traffic routed to you.

So then you just plug a CAT5 cable into nebulink's
router/receiver and then into your LEAF eth0. Then
follow the usual setup described in the install.pdf,
 as if you had DSL.

Well that's my guess. It'll be interesting to read
any replies from people who know the hardware used.

Matt,
actualy what you describe is aviable but is pricy. The standard install
kit is $299. Which includes: 90cm dish, LNB, Install Kit (cable, sat
finder), and a pci satellite reciever card (the biggest ticket items
here). If you want the black box option it is $1149. There is also a usb
recieviner that takes the place of the pci card but that does not make a
lot of sence to me.

It seem likly I will go down this road even if noone else has done it
before unless something else more attractive shows up on the market.
thanks
