Re: [LU] The Independent hits the spot

2014-02-03 Thread Torrey Gilday
Instead of the Football League expending resources to investigate every
gent with a bit of cash and an ambition to have a football club as a
plaything, wouldn't it make more sense to try on some aspects of the German
model, ie supporters having majority stakes, etc??

I think the long and short of it is that foreign investors will always view
clubs as a means to turn a profit. Except that football clubs run as
profitable businesses off the pitch tend to fall short in trophies, while
trophy winning sides tend to have ledgerbooks full of red. Quite the
dilemma.

2014-02-03 Thread Dr Michael Benjamin
Really not sure about anything.
Apart from Haigh. He is 100% not OK.
As for the rest their truth, spin & lies. I just don't know which is what.
Ideally I think I'd like LUST to sit with Cellini and see his wallet. Then
McDermott to sit down with Cellini and see if there is a modus vivendi.
Sure, there is chaos. McDermott worked in that chaos. Can he work in an
organised, structured hierarchy?
Till now he's made a virtue of being loyal. And that is a virtue. But ---
he was also head cook & bottle washer. And he had an alarming run on the
field.
We need changes. One 5-1 hysteria fueled win means nowt. We need another 5
games to see the true picture.
The bottom line are these three questions:-
We need money - lots of it. --Cellini?
We need a coherent business plan -- Farnan?
We need correct and modular football management and coaching -- McDermott??

This has been an extraordinary and worrying 24 hours. Our club is apparently
run by fools masquerading as businessmen. A view from afar.

David Haigh - prospective Tory MP. Most likely in this to raise his profile and
ease his way into politics. Dropped the ball badly with Sports Capital. As
inept as any of the other clowns running the country at the moment, so he'll
fit right in. Sooner he goes the better.

Brian McDermott - A decent man treated appallingly badly. His biggest mistake
was to get involved in the politics - professional suicide. Would have been
better off playing a waiting game.

Festa - We have no facts, only rumours. Let's not let xenophobia get a grip,
some of the anti Italian stuff has been embarrassing.

Cellino - Experienced, wealthy, autocratic and high handed, jumped the gun by
sacking Brian, but once Brian had publicly backed the other consortium it was
inevitable.

McCormack - Appears to have principles! Playing a captains hand - lets hope he
can motivate the team this afternoon.

Simon Jordan - as somebody else has remarked - complete bell end.

Sky Sports - Pathetic. Never known for their lack of bias, the blatant attempt
to whip up a market for Ross signals a new low.

My view is that this has been going on a lot longer than 24 hours and that the
very public pronouncements made by Brian in the last few days have forced
everybody's hand. We've only just seen the fallout. In the end The owners can
sell to whoever they choose, it is their club. If during the course of ordinary
business a link had been proposed with Cagliari, giving us access to Italian
players, how many supporters would have opposed it? We've all been quick to
deride some of the signings from the UK.

I'm a firm believer in times of crisis, in acting on facts. We really don't
have the whole picture, so I hope there is no pitch invasion, no xenophobic
chants this afternoon and that people get behind the team. Plenty of time to be
judgemental once a few of the facts emerge.

Again I completely agree with every word.
Add to that who blocked the Barnes transfer. The bank doesn't own the club.
It has shares. But the Monet was coming from Haigh and his consorts.
Flowers and Haigh broke ranks. Why?
Far too many smoke and mirrors.
What I don't like about Cellini is that he was suckered and made to look
bloody stupid. In fact I wonder if that makes him more determined or make
him walk away.

You're right nothing is won in February, the problem is we didn't win anything
in January, the rate we have been picking up points (10 out of 36 or
thereabouts) means that we are unlikely to win anything in May,
Reading on the other hand collected 19 points over the same period making the
chances of us taking their place in 6th unlikely.

I think huddersfield would have turned us over on Saturday had Friday just been
another day at the office.

I'm not in favour of sacking McD but I can see these perverse logic in it.

As I said from a PR perspective, however it turns out, he will come out
smelling of roses.

[LU] LU: the ongoing fiasco

2014-02-03 Thread Chris Wright

Sorry about the duplicate post earlier - I'm very sceptical about all parties
in this fiasco.

We're all up in arms about the Italians, but we know no facts, only spin that
is in the main being shaped by a future tory politician.

Some questions need answering : Who gave the Italians the impression they were
in charge on Friday? That had to be someone in the current management team?

What exactly is the role of this solicitor that was thrown out of the stadium
this afternoon? He's not just the Cellino family solicitor, on the contrary,
he's a player in his own right - has been involved in all manner of football
related issues..what made him think he had the authority to sack McDermott? Is
there any truth in the suggestion that the existing owners wanted rid of
McDermott?

Is Festa really being lined up as manager? even Cellino has said that he
doesn't have the experience to manage a team - given that there were allegedly
4 Italian players lined up to sign, it is credible that they would need a
familiar face around the place.

Is David Haigh even remotely competent? He brokered the deal with Ken Bates, or
so he claims, should he not have known about the £4m payment due this month?

Do we really want ot go down the road of having two consortia, neither of whom
had enough money to match Cellino's offer, join together to buy the club? What
happens once they do? Where is the war chest for transfers? How do they propose
to sort out the cash flow issue? Where are the funds to cover the cash flow
until it is sorted out? How do they propose to pay back the loans made to the
club by Sports Capital - that looks like an absolute minefield...?

My life experience tells me never to trust a politician. Especially a Tory. My
worst fear is we're being spun by a clown in the grip of a panic. One credible
scenario is that Cellino was told to go ahead and assume control, and panic set
in when it became clear that the crowd (source of income) and the sponsors
(source of income) were having none of it. If I'm right, it won't end well. God
forbid we get a management team of ten or more people!

On the plus side - Saturday was magnificent with several players coming of age.
Ross McCormack has exhibited leadership qualities I didn't think he had and
Brian is back. Let's hope the players can keep the impetus going, we're not all
that far short of the play offs.

We're 8 points off the playoffs, it's the beginning of February. You win
nothing in February. Despite recent form, sacking him would have been the most
ridiculous decision we'd made in recent years, and there's been some howlers.

BMcD has come out of this very well, he had been in a long run of piss poor
performances/results, had Friday's events not happened he would have been due
the sack on Saturday had they lost (not that GFH would have had the bollocks to
sack him, nor the cash to pay him off).
If the take over happens this week and Brian is out on his arse nobody will
remember the slide down the league but the fiasco on Friday.

[LU] LU: The ongoing fiasco

2014-02-03 Thread Chris Wright

The one thing that doesn't quite make sense is that Haigh is a senior employee
of GFH and was involved in their buyout from Bates.
So whatever it was that Sport Capital discovered during due diligence should
have been something he already knew about, and shouldn't have come as a
surprise
to a consortium he was involved with.

My guess is that its to do with due diligence. GFH have made a loss the haigh
group couldn't get the backing as sums didn't add up.

If you were buying a house and you found a problem that meant your mortgage
company wouldn't lend you the full amount you couldn't proceed unless they
dropped the price or you risked your own funds.

I don't necessarily blame Haigh as such in all this.

Others will know more but that's my take from press/twitter etc...

I fear that we are being dragged in some cases willingly into something we
barely understand.
Cellino maybe lots of things. But he's rich. Puts his money where his mouth
is. Above all he is not that useless twat Haigh.
Before anything else. Why was Barnes purchase blocked?
We are so cheerfully jumping on 'get Cellino' but no one answers some very
basic questions. Has Fornan the cash to make a go of it. Why was he
piddling around? Why are he and Haigh suddenly buddies?
Too much spin. Too much black and white. Too many questions. Too much black

2014-02-03 Thread tim . whelan
The one thing that doesn't quite make sense is that Haigh is a senior employee
of GFH and was involved in their buyout from Bates.
So whatever it was that Sport Capital discovered during due diligence should
have been something he already knew about, and shouldn't have come as a
surprise to a consortium he was involved with.

There was no value judgement in what I said - just that he resembled somebody
else - not whether that was a good, bad or indifferent thing.

as to the rest of it, well time will tell of course, but he has a criminal
record, that at least seems relevant to his proposed take over at Leeds (by that
I mean it is not parking tickets), ie. embezzlement.

Fans standing outside holding a vigil - so what - some Leeds fans would have
doen the same for Woodgate, Bowyer et al doesn't mean the person is innocent or
even a laudible individual who is misunderstood - in this context I would argue
it means that some idiots put their club above everything else, right or wrong.

You know there was ructions when Pistol Pete wanted to move us to Stourton - god
knows how a move to Aberdeen or Plymouth would go down...and as for the
managerial merry go round - yes, let's keep that up because 10 or so manager in
the last 10 years has worked a treat for us so far hasn't it?

Re: [LU] Cellino Biog from Beeb site - sounds lovely!

2014-02-03 Thread David W
I don't necessarily attach much blame to anyone for the Sport Capital deal
failing - these things happen, and the new information that caused Sport
Capital to reduce their bid (whether the realisation of the ongoing monthly
losses (it would surprise me if they hadn't already known this) or some
other nasty little contingent liability, is one of those things. They were
within their rights to try and adjust their bid to reflect the change, GFH
were within their rights to say the deal doesn't work at the revised
figure. Unfortunate but life.

However, the goings on during Friday and the perfect storm of lunacy that
came together with GFH apparently (for reasons that may come to light after
this storm has settled) desperate to conclude a deal as a matter of urgency
and Cellino desperate to get in control, and coming to a head on transfer
deadline day, makes Cellino and GFH look inept and opportunistic.

GFH basically abandoned ship and left a quite extraordinary management
vacuum on one of the club's most important days in years. All of that mob
have to take accountability for that.

Cellino was guilty of crass corporate management (trying to shoe horn his
man in and getting McD out before he'd even bought the club) that does
little to reassure anyone that he has learnt the errors of his ways given
his past convictions.

I don't buy the argument that Cellino can be a good thing, just because he
will be a new broom, take no shit bloke with lots of cash. If Bates had got
200m behind him, would that have made everything about his reign ok? No,
because he would sitll have been a graceless, thuggish oaf that dragged our
club's name through the mud, acted solely for himself and sowed division at
every turn as a way of maintaining control. We don't need that again.

We're all wearied by the last decade or so at Leeds. I suppose it comes
down to whether your attitude is now:

Camp 1 - I'm just sick of us being rubbish and second tier. I want quality,
I want drive and I want promotion. Just give me that and I'm happy. It's
not nice guys that matter, it's success.

Camp 2 - I'm just sick of the off-field division, shennanigans, succession
of people taking from our club, but giving little. I just crave stability,
normality and unity. To ensure our football club is Leeds UNITED, at
whatever level that is, without feeling our soul is being eroded with each
passing year.

I'm a Camp 2 fan. But I'm not saying Camp 1 is wrong, and I fully
understand it.

Cheers,

David

2014-02-03 Thread matt
My guess is that its to do with due diligence. GFH have made a loss the haigh
group couldn't get the backing as sums didn't add up.

If you were buying a house and you found a problem that meant your mortgage
company wouldn't lend you the full amount you couldn't proceed unless they
dropped the price or you risked your own funds.

I don't necessarily blame Haigh as such in all this.

Others will know more but that's my take from press/twitter etc...

[LU] Timetable of events via Brian

2014-02-03 Thread nat...@sky.com
He said he got a phone call from Farnham on behalf of Cellino - but has not had
the letter - then got call from Haigh saying he had not been sacked
Said Festa and Redders were going to pick the team and had changed the team he
had picked but then that Gibbs had taken over manager for the day and had
reverted back to the team Brian had picked.

Said Festa was there today to look after the Italian who was there - but did
not know if that player was a Leeds player or not. Said if he is he will treat
him with respect and use him if anything to offer

Did say he had the assurances from GFH in writing and that no-one would be at
TA or in the dug out without the say so of the manager

He was very diplomatic and praised Gibbs, Ross and the fans - kept going on
about how great the fans are and how touched he has been by the fans reception

Followed game on Sky Sports but was not angry or upset he just wanted us to win

He spoke for 20mins without really saying much of any note - just sounded
composed and dignified and proved, once again, that he does value being at LUFC

[LU] Brian press conference

2014-02-03 Thread nat...@sky.com
He did not have a lot to say - just kept repeating that all that counts is
Leeds United and the fans.
Said despite many telling him to walk away he is just proud to be Leeds
manager, loves the club and the fans and has no intention of walking away
Knows little about who will be owners - for now he answers to GFH and they have
given him assurances that he is in charge of all football matters
Was very dignified and refused to slag anyone - says does not hold a grudge,

Said that he did not matter the club and the fans did

He was impressive but we do not know much more than we did before

surely it's more like Dallas, when Bobby died for half a season and then
came out of the shower and it was all a dream, alive again after the ratings
had nosedived! Obviously I never watched Dallas, it just happened to be on
while I walked through the Television Watching Room..

SOAP was probably the first of the US Sitcoms that was actually funny.

the point being when something is bad to the core, ie a crook or cancer,
its all bad. Having more money as a crook just makes you more powerful, it
doesnt make you less "crook".

Re: [LU] Is the new owner REALLY all that bad ?

2014-02-03 Thread Nigel Barber
After reading this BBC piece, http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26006243,
I really hope the deal goes through. He sounds like a genuinely passionate
bloke who speaks his mind. His convictions are for tax evasion, which is
honourable in my book.

I'm sick of mealy-mouthed businessmen. Haigh and co are jumped-up estate
agents. Good riddance.

Nigel.

[LU] Gotta feel sorry for BMcD

2014-02-03 Thread Nigel Sykes
So BMcD has arrived to take training this morning - but what else would he
do?

The guy's in a no-win situation now. The new mob (and I use that word on
purpose) clearly want him out - they already tried to fire him once and
obviously have Festa lined up to replace him. Just making a misjudgement
and jumping the gun is surely not going to change that and Cellini's
statement that he wants BMcD as manager is obviously bullshit. So he's a
dead man walking and he knows it. But if he fails to turn up and act like
he's the manager, they'd presumably be able to claim he walked out and thus
not have to pay him his due compensation for actually being sacked!

Hardly likely to make for a joyous atmosphere are training this week is it?

Nigel
