Re: [LU] Jimmy Hill RIP

2015-12-19 Thread Andy Clayton
It was ridiculous that prior to the work he did, chairmen had too much power,
too much of the reward.

After his bollocks, players gained too much power, and all the reward. Instead
of abolishing the maximum wage and implementing a fairer wage limit that shared
some of the reward, then we wouldn't have the modern Prima Donna poofters that
we get charged a fortune to watch.

2015-12-19 Thread tim.whelan
I met Jimmy Hill twice in the mid-1990s when I was representing the Football
Supporters Association at meetings we had with the football authorities.

He talked a lot of rubbish during the meetings, but one thing I will say for
him is that before they began he would come over and chat to us
enthusiastically like an ordinary fan. He didn't talk down to us and there were
no 'airs and graces' about him.

that's a bit unfair, we are talking about changes to players rights that
occurred in the early 60's, not combination of Bosman ruling and Sky
pumping in millions and gangsters like Abramaovic that led to the current
ridiculous wages that are now common place. At the time he negotiated
breaking the £20 MAXIMUM wage, that was just a bit more than the average
household income.

Hmmm, I don't think you can blame Jimmy for that. I blame sky. Football was at
its best for me in the late 80s early 90s.

Sad he's dead.

Just on this, a great book about professional footballers before the maximum
wage ended is Gary Imlach's 'my father and other working class football
heroes'. I commend it to the list.
