So Sorry, to hear Dave’s passing.
I agree with the all the sympathies expressed by many of the list stalwarts
from the late 90s.
It is good to see some of those names again, but as is often the case it takes
such a sad event to instigate such expression.

I’d like to thank Dave for shaving my head in Nottingham, 1996. Little knowing
it would never grow back!

He was one of the guys that made the long trips to Leeds from Didcot worthwhile
in those days when the football was sometimes less than riveting, and he was
always good company at associated List gatherings.

RIP Dave and condolences to the family.

I just read the MOALM piece - I’d forgotten all about ‘Bob Holness’ :-)

Both funny and ever so slightly embarrassing. I do remember me and DRB singing
on the train, along with everyone else. Jeez I was pissed. When I got into
Wemberlee I booed Trevor Brooking who walked past, and then we had an
altercation with the posh Leeds fans in front as we wouldn’t stand for the
National Dirge, and following that we gave Virginia Bottomley some direct
advice :-) Then Craig from the Sisters of Mercy tapped me on the shoulder and
was laughing at our antics. ALAW.

And that gnome - I see him every few years, usually in In De Wildemaan in
Amsterdam, Guy Thornton of course - cracking gent.

Shocking :-(

I recognise the ‘did he actually do any work’ quip - did any of us :-)
Fortunately email and web monitoring wasn’t a thing in the BL back in the
halcyon days of the list, otherwise I’d have been out, courtesy of Voice, Pope
Paul, Maggie, DRB, Gav, Rogerre, Betty, Mike & Claire, Guy etc. Great days.

I wonder if we can commemorate DRB, something that will carry on, like the LUFC
U23 Player of the Year, or something like that? Am sure someone will have
better ideas if it’s deemed appropriate?

Mother carrot and three daughter carrots.

Daughter carrots say to mother "We are off out to find husbands"

Some time later, first daughter carrot comes back with a King Edward
potato.  Mother is very pleased.  "A good choice first daughter" says
   mother carrot.

A little later, second daughter carrot comes back with a Jersey Royal
potato.  Mother carrot is doubley pleased.  "Excellent" says mother
carrot "I will now have two daughters married to royalty".

Third daughter finally arrives back.  She has got Desmond Lynam with
her.  Mother isn't pleased.  "You can't marry Des Lynam" says Mother
carrot to daughter carrot.  "Why not?" asks upset daughter carrot.

"Cos he's a commentator" says mother.

HA-HAAA H H Boom Boom hahaha (ala Basil Brush).

Subject: LU: Ideal Gnome Exhibition??

Well, some well-documented and thoroughly entertaining accounts of the
London revelries have reached the list so far, and here's my judgement on
  the carrying on!

Seeing Leeds get stuffed at Rugby League to Bradford Balls wasn't an
ideal starter for ten but bugger it, I had beer to drink so off I popped
into the Pontefract Castle (couldn't resist it - crap inside though -
it's on Wigmore St) for a couple prior to meeting Betty & assorted
liggers from his past, and Nick and his missus who go to't matches with
me in the Moon and 6d on Wardour Street.  Ted Heaton and co were `doing
Soho' and left just before I got there which was a bit of a bugger! I had
a quick and unsuccessful look for them, but the best offer I got was from
some rain-coated up ponce asking me if I wanted to see a good show! After
colourfully informing him that he wasn't my type it was back to the Moon
and 6d.  After watching a peculiar little theatrical bloke in long black
coat, black hat and `actor' characteristics shuffling around watching us,
charas were ordered as the by now beered-up posse headed for the MOALM.
Bloody hell, it was in a match-box crammed with all manner of wierdos!
Sat at the door was Roger `wanna buy a used car guv' Goodairs mate Bob
Holness, swearing like shite and leering over Becks!  Everywhere I went
this pissed up student appeared, trying to cadge free photocopies from
the library - Jesus, Graham White - how sad are you when you're pissed???
And then appeared a gnome - a big gnome admittedly, but it was a gnome in
a 450 year old little hat - and it was a pissed gnome too!!  I turned
round "So can you sort me out any free photocopies then??" nagged the
swaying stude!  Nick was chuckling away - he'd spotted the luvvie actor!
It was madness really - God, I even spoke to James Lundon, who like most
of the people who sometimes talk a load of clap was a pretty decent
geezer.  "Look at the f***ing state of that f***ing hat you scruffy
f***ing b**tard" - who else could it be but Bradfords answer to Roger
Mellie, Mr Goodair himself, done up like a butchers dog and sniffing
round the 50 year old landlady all night!!  Aye, we saw you, don't worry,
  you dirty get!!

Top blokes were everywhere - Muckshifter and the Wakey boys - Christ you
lot stood out - you looked normal!!  And of course, all round Gods
fanatic Vic Appelian, Ham Sandwich, Padraig, Gav - God, nearly everyone
except Nige Kinder who I couldn't catch up with all night and was
genuinely pissed off that I didn't see him.  The post pub singing to the
miserable twat of a neighbour who called the rozzers was highly amusing
  and then it was...

The curry experience was wierd - I was sat opposite this big gnome!!!
Some Southern softies started spouting on about Rugby UNION - I ask you!!
Then they tried singing - I've seen more attitude in a Nottinghamshire
miner!  Vic and me grabbed a cab with some cheery Cockney wanker, who
once he'd dropped Vic off didn't have a clue where he was - I got out on
Bond St and walked - knowledge my arse!! A swiftie in the hotel bar then
it was Sky Sports all night, unaccompanied by my attention!

11:57 Sunday and I was in the Constitution - the San Miguel was flowing
and three hours later so was I.  I have to say that the 10 minute train
ride to Wembley was THE highlight of the weekend - ace singing, Boococks
CIA trained brother looking menacingly on, Voice, DRB and me hollering
like there was no tomorrow ( and many of us wished there hadn't been) and
in the midst of it all one old lady and a couple reading trying to ignore
us - peach!  Oh, and Dave, one of Betty's mates accompanying us with a
mouth organ - bizarre!  Had to walk right through the Villa fans and
everyone was in good spirits - a joint rendition of "If you hate Man Utd
clap your hands" getting universal approval!

Post match back in the Moon and 6d and there was Vic, Ted H and the Tad
Four, and a couple of Loiners as depressed as it gets.  But a few drinks
and a good Italian later (cheers Vic!) and it was all smiles - who am I
kidding, I was still mightily depressed!

Anyway, the point is that there are some good people on this list and
whilst Sunday was profoundly depressing the get-togethers made sure some
of the weekends memories will be good ones!  Guy has been thanked by
others and I'll add mine to them - cheers, it was an excellent night!

  Football - eh, it's a bastard!

And finally, which hospital did Graham White have his stomach pumped out
in??  Bloody students!!  And NO, I will not get you any freebies - you

Dear All,

Earlier this week we heard of the sad death of one of the earliest members and
most loved characters from the list, David “DRB” Brennan.
Not only was DRB a list regular in the 90s as a trawl through the archives held
by James Lundon proved but he also wrote a lot of good stuff.

As a season ticket-holder he used to go to reserve matches at The Shay and (as
well as Maggie Barber) post regular reports of the reserves’
progress. He was a regular source of ticket information and became very
friendly with Mandy in the ticket office especially when trying to find out
what times cup matches would be played and what the ticket allocations would be.

DRB and his wife Kate were part of a gang that regularly met pre-match (he was
an Adolphi regular), he was at the MOALM and he was the man behind the
sponsored head shave at the first Euronet in 1996.

Like others on the list he was a Northern Soul boy, coming from Horsforth what
else would he be?

One of the friendliest, funniest and kindest blokes I have had the pleasure to
meet he will always be the example I would use of what the list is about.

DRB leaves behind, Kate and the two boys Sid and Bradley and we have been in
touch to send our sympathy. No date has been set for what will be a very small
family funeral but his brother-in-law suggests there might be a memorial
service in the future. The family has asked, if anyone wishes to, that
donations are made to MIND which is a charity DRB supported.

We checked with the family before we posted anything to the list and they were
happy for us to do this. As we get more information, we will pass this on but
in the meantime please enjoy the following post to the list from 1996, it’s
typical of the DRB we knew and loved (that and the bloody song he wrote about
Tomas Brolin!)

RIP DRB.

I can't find the words to say what this horrible news is doing to me right
now, but maybe the tears say enough about this man whose generous
friendship came my way simply because of Leeds United and this
extraordinary email list.

He was funny and irreverent, much more clever than he liked to admit, and
kind and big hearted with it. Saying he was sociable is a bit of an
understatement; he got on with just about everyone at just about any time.

Saying "husband and father" doesn't come close either: he absolutely adored
Kate, and being married to her, and he absolutely loved Bradley and Sidney,
and being a full-on dad to them too (he usually preferred being called
David, but the email sign off proudly changed to Dadiv and Double
Dadiv after the boys arrived.) I am praying so hard for the three of you.

Dull match days (and good match days) on Row O in the top left of the kop
were all the better for having David around, singing shouting swearing and
chatting. He thoughtfully bought me a hip flask so we could all take turns
in matchday refuelling duties, and the best matchdays also involved the
Pudsey Special bus, a takeaway form the Bismillah, and some family time in
front of the telly (and the cats).

You didn't care much for religion, David; but then (and how I wish you'd
understood) I don't either.

May you rest in peace – and rise in glory

Love,
Gav

Similarly, I didn't know Dave personally, but always enjoyed his contributions
to the list. Condolences to his family and friends, and his Leeds family too.

RIP Dave

RIP DRB.

Betty

Subj:LU: Interview

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, as your team selection for some games over the past
few months has been, shall we say, "innovative" what will be your policy for
the Port Vale game?

HW: Well, all things considered, and bearing in mind that our players have had
a hectic autograph signing session recently, and it will be a bit chilly, I
think 11 players will suffice.

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, does this mean that even though your African players
are back from international duty, you will not use them?

HW: All things being equal, Tony, Phil and Lucas are definitely players, and
players want to play, want to play, but there can only be so many players, who
play, so they may play a part in playing but it's not so warm for players who
normally play, normally play, in a warmer climate.

Interviewer: It was suggested that in the Aston Villa game, you may have been
better playing an attacking side, as the defence, containing so many
youngsters, was unlikely to keep Villa out, offence being the best sort of
defence.

HW: Youngsters, youngsters. I was young once, and wanted to play, wanted to
play. You've got to give them a goal, I mean go, they may be short of pace,
but Rob Bowman has got the same name as the Producer of the X Files, so who
knows what might happen, might happen. I picked the best side for the game,
for the game. When I start telling you where to use a metaphor instead of a
simile, and when to employ onomatopoeic licence, then you can tell me how to
pick and quarter of pick and mix, I mean a football team.

Interviewer: There has been much discussion about Tomas Brolin's future at
Elland Road. Can you enlighten us as to the current situation?

HW: Tomas has got a white shirt, some people might say, might say, it still has
Parmalat on it, but I say Thistle Hotels. I know the shirts are the same
colour, and that was a major consideration in buying Tommy. I like continuity,
like buying players from Sheffield, so buying a player who was used to wearing
the same colour shirt fitted in well with our long-term plans. Brolly is happy
wearing white and yellow trimmed wi
