[LU] Good to be back (Everton)

2021-08-22 Thread nattan--- via Leedslist
Well we are back and back with a bang - the atmosphere was everything we
remembered and more , the limbs after the 2 goals were as good as any game
since we went all seaterIt was a fitting game to re- start in front of fans ,
lots of end to end stuff, some crunching tackles, decent chances and saves, 2
great goals from us as we came from behind and a raucous atmosphere throughout.
On MOTD compare the polite applause at Man City as the 5th went in v our
‘scenes’ when Raph banged in the equaliser ( and I know they are not strictly
comparable)Just a shame that the last minute scramble / foul on Bamford did not
earn us a winner
So 90 mins was great but I am not sure what to expect with everything else - we
had full houses every week before lock down but no game seenec as packed as
this one. The train was full of Everton ( first time seen away fans in numbers)
and then it was 5 or 6 deep in the West Ridings - so bad we doubled up first
round ( as did others) We left early to meet someone on fanszone at 1.45 but
the bus queue was massive and Uber had no drivers ! Eventually flagged a cab
who dropped us at the roundabout at the top of the hill, so bad was the traffic
. Fanzone queues were so long we went into the Revie members bar to ensure we
got served before kickoff ( lager and cider both went off )Like I say no idea
why things were so packed for same number of fans as last season so god only
knows what havoc 55,000 capacity will bringWas great to see everyone I
recognise near me made it through covid alive and well and the minutes silence
that became applause / singing to commemorate those we have lost made hairs on
my neck stand up. For me it was poignant to walk past the Burley Banksy box in
memory of Big Jack the man I blame for my life :-))
The game was played at a frantic pace , they were mainly content to soak up
pressure and hit us on the break ( they probably had more and better clear
chances) we had control it were not too threatening.
The penalty decision was odd - we saw nothing and thought they were looking at
VAR to fill time while Klich received treatment- knew it was bad when ref took
a look . Calvin Lewis was a right dick after scoring- doing the shush gesture
before some wanky dancing - twat . Their no7 dived and moaned his way through
the game a la Grealish so a team not on our radar became a team we hated ( for
the day at least)Our equaliser was magnificent- Bamford stole the ball and fed
Klich who finished with real style - cue bedlamSecond half they did more and
went ahead and we nearly fell apart saved ( literally by Mes) then came the
equaliser, a cross from Kalvin and in a scramble Coops fed Raph who thundered
it home - cracking finish
We tried to win it but a draw was fair ( and beat last seasons result)
So a point on the board and the season is up and running and I LOVE IT Dave

Well, I missed my first 'first home game' since the relegation season of 81-82
season due to shambolic ticket arrangements. Paying £70 for a Gold Membership
wasn't enough to secure me a ticket as it was a free for all when the tickets
were released. Then I entered into around 10 hours (I kid you not) of
refreshing screens to try and grab and returned tickets. I don't think I saw
one ticket come up in that time despite lots of messages on Twitter saying that
they had managed to grab a ticket. Then on Saturday morning I turned to the
touts and kranks and was offered all sorts but I was so pissed off by then I
decide to crack open the beer with a couple of mates and watch on TV. What made
it worse was all the Twitter messages of people going to their first game and
empty seats not taken up. A real shit show from LUFC. Surprisingly it was easy
to get a Crewe ticket.
Anyway, on to the footy and I thought it was a decent game with two evenly
matched teams. I thought Everton looked sharp with Gray, who was a yard or two
too quick for Ayling and others, whereas Raph for us looked like he meant
business.
I thought we looked our most dangerous in the first half, getting back to our
quick attacking football of last season although I don't think we are quite
there yet. The reasons for me were:
1) Firpo - early days for the lad and he definitely did try to get forward
early on and try to overlap, however he doesn't look that dynamic or pacey for
me and I'm not sure if he is replacing Allioski on that display. Haven't seen
too much defensive ability either. He was also out on his feet after 50 mins
and was quickly taken off. Going to be hard road for Junior.
2) Centre back pairing isn't good enough. Cooper's method of defending is going
to cost us. It did yesterday with his shit tugging antics. It's something he
does frequently and does tend to get away with but he's got to stop that now.
Overall, I'd say Cooper is at best a squad player and playing alongside the
inexperienced Struijk it's no surprise we're leaking goals. Llorente and Koch
are the pairing for me but we have to accept that both have been injured for
long periods since joining the club.
3) Phillips - did well first half but I think he ran out of steam and by his
own admission is not as fit as he should be. Fuck knows why ?
Here's my scores:
Miesler - 8. Kept us in the game as he always does
Ayling - 4. I thought that was his poorest game for a long time. Gray ran rings
around him.
Firpo - 4. Not convinced but early days
Struijk - 5. Looks the part but I'm unsure about his positioning in key
moments.
Cooper - 3. Dreadful defending and could have easily been sent off with another
careless tackle 2nd half
Phillips - 6. Did well to keep Richarlson quiteish first half.
Klich - 7. Lots of running and took his goal well
Bamford - 7. Fantastic first half but faded and started to look a tad desperate
towards the end.
Raphinha - 8. Our best player by a mile. Fantastic strike for the goal
Dallas - 7. Playing all over the park. Some great defensive work.
Harrison - 7. Lively first half but faded 2nd.
Subs:
Roberts - one or two moments
Shack - not involved too much.

[LU] Fwd: Good to be back (Everton)

2021-08-22 Thread Nick
Its hard to convey just how much emotion was packed into that afternoon…it has
been a long time, a shit-load has happened since March 2020…but finally we got
to walk up the same streets, to the same gate, the same turnstile, and after
all these months up the same stairs and out into the light and The Kop and that
noise…

There were tears in a lot of eyes.

The game was all thunder and storm. In the end a draw seemed like a fair
result. Cooper can argue all he wants but if you have hold of some opposition
player’s shirt in the box, you are gifting the ref a chance to give a penalty.
At this level he’s a squad player. The sooner we can get Llorente fit and pair
him with Koch or Struijk, the better.

Meslier - saved the game (at least) twice
Ayling - is wayward at the moment and had no answer to Gray
Firpo - needs to get up to speed, because despite flashes going forward, his
defending looks suspect. (check the build up to their second goal)
Cooper - (see above)
Struijk - i don’t see his developing into a successful midfielder at this
level, but with some specialist training he can make a good centre half
Phillips - was weirdly off the pace (dreadful spelling of giving the ball
away), then on top of the game, before tailing off again presumably fatigue - I
hope Forshaw has enough in the tank to be good cover for him, because we need
it.
Dallas - is a solid gold beast of a player - turns up everywhere
Harrison - wanted to get involved but was nearly always double or treble-marked
as soon as he got the ball
Raphinha - ditto - but he is faster, hungrier and trickier than Harrison -
unstoppable shot for the equaliser, you just knew it was in as soon as you saw
him setting himself for the strike
Bamford - had a running battle with their unit at the back - set up the first
and arguably might have had a penalty at the death - he looks leaner this
season and faster.

Roberts & Shackleton came on and pushed us forward, as a group, without
achieving a great deal individually.

One of the commentators said, as we scored, “there’s no point in trying to
compete with that noise, Leeds have equalised.”

One of my favourite days at Elland Road.

Nick

Rich,
I don't think Bielsa will ever pick your favored centre-half combination of
Koch and Llorente unless he has no other choice, because they're each
right-footed and he prefers to pair a left-footer (Cooper or Struijk) with a
right-footer. Yesterday the fact that Llorente and Koch were each out with
knocks left him no choice. For me, I'd like to see Struijk and Llorente get a
run of games together. I saw somewhere that we concede more than twice as many
goals when Llorente doesn't play.
Cheers!
Sean
