Re: [LU] Another PR masterstroke!

2018-04-24 Thread Chris Nickson
Sorry, Matt, I have to disagree. Myanmar is a country whose leaders openly
allowed this ethnic cleansing and murder to happen, and blatantly lied
about it to people globally, in spite of all the evidence. By going there,
LUFC act as if they don't care, that human lives count for nothing at all,
and give tacit support for the regime, as if everything is ok. It's not, as
people worldwide have said Maybe there's an untapped football market there;
I don't know. I don't care, frankly, when the people running the country
are encouraging acts like this. What does the club have planned for a
pre-season, a tour of Syria? This isn't just making the club a laughing
stock, it's treating all those who died or have fled with utter contempt.

Since we're likely to part company with our esteemed manager at the end of
this season, and Wenger's leaving Arsenal, maybe Leeds can get a French

Re: [LU] list anniversaries

2016-01-26 Thread Chris Nickson
Trying to recall when I joined. 95 - I think. I remember a couple of meets
at the Adelphi when I was back in England, but I was over for MOALM.

And now I've been back in the UK, actually in Leeds, for more than 10 years
and I'm not even interested in going to matches any more. If I want to
throw my money away I'll spend it on something entertaining.

I'd second Ilkley as there's decent walking, and a nice little place (mind

city. Bit posh overall, but liveable.

[LU] Fwd: Well that's alright then

2012-04-18 Thread Chris Nickson
Actually, it's taken from an Israeli series, so not original at all. And,
IMHO, only a little better than average, plot holes you could drive a truck
through and no shortage of wooden acting.

If you want to see how good American TV can be, try seasons 1&" of
Justified.

Isn't it just self-serving propaganda to promote the war on terror?
All-American heroes against dem murderous A-rabs?

[LU] Non-LU: Another book and an invitation.

2012-01-27 Thread Chris Nickson
I know you'll be amazed at an email here that's not arguing with someone
else...

My third novel came out yesterday, continuing the series set in Leeds in
the 1730s. It's called The Constant Lovers and is available in hardback
from good online retailers on an Internet near you. The first two books
(The Broken Token and Cold Cruel Winter) are available as ebooks, since of
course you'll want to be one of the first to have the whole set ;)

Cold Cruel Winter was named one of the 10 best mysteries of 2011 by Library
Journal in the US, so I might be doing something right.

Finally, for those of you in or about Leeds - the book launch takes place
in the Exhibition Room of the Central Library on Feb. 7, 6.30-7.45, so pop
down if you're inclined.

2011-11-18 Thread Chris Nickson
I know it's far from LU, but I wanted to tell you all that my Leeds
mystery, Cold Cruel Winter, has been named one of the ten best mysteries of
the year by Library Journal.

For those who asked when it's out as an ebook, the answer is January 1.

The third book in the series, The Constant Lovers, comes out January 26,
the same day Cold Cruel Winter appears in paperback.

You don't need to buy it (although it'd be nice if you did, with Christmas
coming soon), but ask your library to get a copy.

Sorry for that.

No, it's not curry houses or Tetley's, but a number of listers had read my

published in hardback in the UK. Still in the 1730s, and still with Richard

2011-05-07 Thread Chris Nickson
I have to agree with Dr. Mike on this, although my heart feels that ManU
fans should be deprived of all voting rights, just because.

There can never ever be a bar to voting no matter what the erstwhile 'good '
reason.
The minute you permit anyone to ' define' eligibility then along come
someone else with his criteria. And his right to define.
Fascism and communism was all seemingly good people at the outset. They
defined. They committed atrocities.
There is no way that one should decide that another is inferior or inhibited
when it comes to basic rights. The most basic of which is man's equal right
to express himself, receive justice and to realize his true potential and
desire.
Sorry to pontificate but I didnt bring up the subject and I have difficulty
with any form of intolerance.

The only way we'd have got this World Cup would have been by giving millions
to our favourite FIFA judges. Their whole system is corrupt, and their
particular status in Switzerland means they're not accountable.

For me, the best punishment all those countries with good technical bids
could give FIFA is by pulling out of these two world cups. Lose the big name
countries that people want to see and it all falls apart. There's room for a
different, more transparent organisation. Remember, the only people who
really make money from the WC are FIFA, who sell the rights for many, many
millions...

For those of us old enough to recall Saturday matinees and films at the big

the horribly overpriced popcorn and junk you get today.

My dad had tales from when he was assistant manager at the ABC on Vicar Lane
not long after the war, then managed another, smaller place (shamefully, I
don't recall which one).

As for Pearl & Dean ads, they still have them, after a fashion and still
marked P&D, when I go to the Broadway in Nottingham.

lister instead?

I'll be signing copies of my novel, The Broken Token, at Waterstone's in the
city centre from 11-1. Be glad to see any/all of you, since the ones I've
met have all been years back.

The book is a historical mystery set in Leeds in 1732. Dr Mike bought a copy
and gave it a 5 star review on amazon (as have others). So please, come down
and say hello. And buy the book of course ;) Evidently even Betty spent his
own money on a copy, but that might just be a rumour...
