Re: [LU] Championship

2024-05-26 Thread Graham White via Leedslist
There´s a guy lives here who´s originally from Wakefield, usually doesn´t
bother watching football as he´s into rugby and cricket but came to the bar
with his LUFC supporting mates, summed it up for me "like watching paint dry".

Well, if ever a team was cursed…

Very disappointing overall performance from us.

Started so positive & on the front foot for most of the first 10, solid &
determined - and then came the first defensive wobble when they broke down our
right…
I hoped that would act as a wake up call but didn’t… Sure enough soon they
scored while Rodon & Amps stood pointing at each other & Archie unfortunately
had dropped too far so played Armstrong on…

From that moment on we never really looked like getting into the game again.

Too many of our players didn’t believe in it (and that has to be laid on Farke)
- but the one that did was the first to be replaced which summed quite a lot
up.

Rutter & Cree were well below par, and should’ve been replaced on the hour at
least. Gruev & Kamara struggled to get anything going - and not once did we see
the triangulation play between Kamara, Cree, Rutter & Firps which have become a
bit of our speciality this season…

And the combination Rutter/Piroe hasn’t worked well ever & won’t work in the
future either if one of them keeps insisting on not interacting with the other.
Another thing for DF to sort out.
Maybe he should let one of them go. There’s no indication that Rutter will find
his form from before the break & operation again… on his current showing he’s a
big question mark.

Anyway, thought Dan James did well when he came on, desperately unlucky with
his effort, and at least we did try hard in the end to force a goal.

Too little too late as the saying goes.

Next season can’t start too soon. Not looking forward to the summer of silly
season crap but that’s what it is.

Hope and pray for a few good additions and that we don’t lose too many of our
most influential players. Our squad was never big enough this season so
additions are needed.

Why not try and find a left back who can defend? Heard that one before?
Wish list can become long!

Realistically we won’t be able to keep Willy or Cree, but let’s hope Archie
stays!

Anyways we had muchas bebidas and when Guy went off for something to eat I
carried on drinking until the meet pub.

We see why he never stayed at his previous clubs for more than a couple of

It was brilliant and highly recommended.  We were both a bit worried that
having seen the murals online and in photos it would be boring and an
anticlimax.  The opposite was true, when we saw the first one, the 4 legends on
the wall at Pudsey we were gob smacked and were like that the whole day,
despite some of the murals being in odd places. There was also something that
felt special with the amount if effort it all took rather than a quick tour
round in a car. Only bad bit was we did not get to see the Lucas one, or the
Bielsa one at hyde park (?)We have seen all the Elland Road and Beeston ones on
match days
For the record,  and if anyone else wants to give it a go, here is our journey.
Train to new Pudsey, then a long walk to the market to see the 4 legends - big
Jack,  Lash, Norman and TrevorA longer walk from there to Bramley to see the
Gary Speed one.Short walk to Bramley station, and train to Leeds.Train from
Leeds to Guiseley to see the 3 managers ( we agreed the Don should be at the
top , then wilko then Bielsa but that is splitting hairs , it is a brilliant
piece of artwork. Train back to Leeds then taxi (£8) to Asda at Wortley to see
Bielsa the Redeemer ( yes I did the arms out pose for my pictures   )Then
flagged down a cab to the city centre (£11) and the Calls to see KP ,( Albert
and lucas) the sky had just turned red so our photos are amazing.  Then short
walk to Duck and Drake to see Pablo. Finally a walk back to Leeds station,
passing the  " United are back  " sign
Like I say we loved it and it was well worth the time, trouble and expense.
Took a hell of a lot of morphine and other pain killers to get through it all
but a great day

The era of the pure e-mailing list is almost gone!  I am still on a lot of
old-style mailing lists so know better than many.  The only one that is going

IN COMPUTERS AND RELATED SYSTEMS (comp.risks) - Peter G. Neumann, founder and
still moderator].  This very excellent RISKS mailing list has been going since
1989 or 1990 and has its own very dedicated membership etc.

We have been on the go since mid-June 1992, which means we are in our 30th year
of continuous operation.  This is a hugely impressive thing in and of itself.
I have almost everything that has been posted on the list during that time, and
everything from January 1993, when I first joined myself.  At least half the
people on this list have been on it for over 25 years or more.  We are not
unlike RISKS in many ways but it's how we deal with it, will decide whether we
continue as we are or not.

The new WhatsApp group is great - which I'm trying to archive too - but it
should never replace this mailing list.  Saying all that, the mailing list is
only as good as the people who contribute to it, which really is just two or
three people on a consistent basis.  Dave N. and Rich W. are keeping it fed
almost single-handedly with their regular and consistently insightful &
high-quality match reports.  The more people who contribute to the list, the
healthier it will be.

I do see a few problems with the current Leedslist mailing list, one is the
fact that it is text-based when time & tide have moved towards a more
web-centric world (see below), another is the unknowing but very annoying habit
of some posters to reply to (digest) posts including the entire contents of the
(digest) posts they are replying to. There is little or nothing that the
mailing list administrators [John Betty and myself] can do about that latter
annoyance.  It has turned a few people off the list but we don't want to go
down the road of moderating all contributions etc.

Remember, when the mailing list was first set up it was at a
different-almost-pre-web time when many of us were not able to go to games, nor
to look at them live on telly.  The latter is pretty much no longer the case.
There are many other e-forums for fans to contribute to than before too:
Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WACCOE-like forums, personal blogs etc.  We live
in an increasingly segmented world where we can consume our media in almost
unique ways, this e-mailing list still being an almost-communal experience.

We live in a much more "immediate" world than ever before too, which suits the
WhatsApp model, while many of us are more reflective, which suits the e-mailing
list model.  However, for the list to survive, the quantity, but especially the
quality, of the contributions must stay high, otherwise, we will continue to
die very slowly.

Who else is willing to man that gap of keeping the signal-to-noise ratio high?
Let's be having ya, Kevin Lewis and your always-excellent musings, or anything
else that comes into that weird and wonderful mind of yours, KofT!

James.

Back in the day before we had photocopiers - yes Junior, there once was such a

What was the machine and the process called. Can't remember at all.

Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!

2021-02-16 Thread Graham White via Leedslist
Yeah, I remember decimalisation, some people used it as an excuse for ripping
people off. For instance prior to decimalisation it cost 3s 6d to go in the Kop
and afterwards it went up to 50p! A 285% increase, robbing bastards!!!

I used to live near to White Hart Lane and after football matches we'd work
through the thousands of discarded cigarette boxes in the hope that we'd
find a cigarette or two that we would then try to sell. I only remember
being successful once. For the rest of that 1971 football season though,
we'd ask the people coming out of games if they had any old pennies they
didn't want (and couldn't spend). However for a few months you could
actually still spend them in multiples of 6. We'd easily make a good
shilling each at the start because nobody begrudged the odd penny that they
couldn't spend to little kids.

However, the happy memories of that Spring were soon overshadowed by West
Bludy Brom.

philosophy in new signings mid season (no)?

I come back to Ben White... will Brighton still see us as competitors given we
are already 10 pts above them? Will they let him go for less than 40ish
million? I doubt we would pay the amount they will demand. Alas, I just can’t
see it happening despite it being our best option right now.

More likely we will go buy a couple of cheap European squad type players who
won’t make a difference.

Jesus, I was pissed that day.  Had been on some demo in the morning, met up
with Guy and had a good few pints, then met up with some union friends and had
a good few more pints by which point there didn't seem any point in stopping.
Was totally pissed before I even got to MOALM, have no idea how I got home.
Luckily I was living in Hendon at the time so it was just a tube journey.  I
felt so rough the following day I'm surprised I made it to the game - wish I'd
stayed in bed!

To think that was just 5 days before my daughters were born, seems a lifetime
ago now.

Wemberlee I booed Trevor Brooking who walked past, and then we had an
altercation with the posh Leeds fans in front as we wouldn’t stand for the

advice :-) Then Craig from the Sisters of Mercy tapped me on the shoulder and
was laughing at our antics. ALAW.

2019-03-02 Thread Graham White via Leedslist
Well games like that do make up for some of the dross I've seen over the years.

I think the worst game involving Leeds that I've ever seen was an absolutely
dire 0-0 draw against Derby County in front of about 15K bored, freezing
spectators in which the most exciting action was the kick off.  This was in the
1988/9 season I think.  It was also the first and, not uncoincidentally, the
last game I ever took my then girlfriend to.

Great all round performance, glad I decided to stay out late to watch it.

Being a Leeds fan got to look at the negatives:

Harrison - great pass in the first minute but apart from that didn't realise he
was even on the pitch, surprised he wasn't subbed earlier.

Casilla - still not convinced he's any great improvement on Peacock-Farrell

Why oh why do we persist in giving away totally unnecessary free kicks in
dangerous positions just outside the penalty area?

Still, great win and top of the league again, goal difference looking a bit
more healthy now.

That is what you would see plastered on buses etc if last nights game was a

didn't the fans enjoy it - 90  mins of non stop singing, chanting and

I agreed with Nic (?) beforehand that I would have a few pre match beers

(check) but little did I think it would be so easy to do the second two.
Pre match we were all worried and the general feeling was that we would lose to
WBA but in itself, that would not be fatal but our lack of goals would both
scupper automatic and the play offs- our main hope would be that Bamford
instead of wasting chances as he had so far would find his scoring boots. We
slagged off the usual suspects, Alioski, Harrison, the more recent addition
Ayling, and then based on Tuesday, Tyler Roberts. With these 4 in the team we
were going nowhere !
As per normal we timed it quite well to get to the ground and I was going up
the steps to my seat as they kicked off - as I was doing the 'scuse me' dance
down the row, there was a massive roar and I looked up just in time to see
Pablo curl a belter into the net - great finish, and a great start. (big kudos
to Harrison who laid the ball on for him )
They got a free kick in a great position as we were still celebrating but it
hit the wall and that was the last time I was really worried about this game.
The early goal really lifted the full house crowd and we got behind the team as
only (these days) Elland Road can.
We needed the second and I was deliberately not mentioning the 'we have not
lost when we have scored first stat' in case I jinxed it. We had to wait till
the half hour mark to get the second, half an hour in which we chased them
down, harried them and took the ball off them. We also went back to the way we
played earlier in the season when we made possession count. None of this Japp
Stamm to me to you football along the back line, this was passing with purpose,
precision and speed, exactly what Bielsaball is about. We had a few half chance

Then came the icing on the cake - in the second minute of injury time, with ER

at very close range by Alioski who tapped home - how he had the energy to be

he has his (many) critics but you cannot criticise his effort or his stamina

What worries me is the way our goal difference has now been overtaken by both
teams above us.  Earlier in the season we had the best goal difference by a

Always preferred the Queens Head across the road, is it still going?

I'll be watching it in Mulligans Irish Bar*, sadly we'll be stuck in some
corner as all the big screens will be showing the egg chasers.

*Surprisingly for Spain it actually is Irish!  Roisin and Audrey are from
Dublin, although Audrey's partner Chris is from York (and supports the bloody
