Well games like that do make up for some of the dross I've seen over the years.

I think the worst game involving Leeds that I've ever seen was an absolutely
dire 0-0 draw against Derby County in front of about 15K bored, freezing
spectators in which the most exciting action was the kick off. This was in the
1988/9 season I think. It was also the first and, not uncoincidentally, the
last game I ever took my then girlfriend to.

They've got 2 guys up front who are probably the best strikers in the league
and we've got a makeshift defence. Don't tell me that we didn't need some
players in January. Philips is no central defender - just look at his
contribution (or non-contribution) to their goal.

What has happened to Klich? He's still doing ok and he is getting into good

Harrison has done nothing surely now has to go off to be replaced by Clarke.

I think we can get back into this but it's always likely they will score again.

"United are back, United are back"
Well those of you who thought that we had been 'rumbled' may have to re-think
things after a totally dominant display and a real return to the peak
'Bielasball' last night - albeit against a very poor team who were low on
confidence
Two slight moans - first, the crowd, whislt good in terms of numbers was as
quiet during the first half as I can remember (practice for the Prem?) Secondly
the fact that despite it being shooting practice at the end and almost the
oldkids game of attack v defence we only managed 2 goals
However these two gripes are totally overshadowed by a tremendous performance,
all made possible by the return of the magician , Pablo Hernandez, who was
sublime and went through their back line like the proverbial knife through
butter. He was a joy to watch and when he plays like this you wonder what he is
doing in this Division. How we have missed him especially at home when faced
with a team who pack the defence and come for a draw.
The other returnee, Kemar Roofe, also proved , yet again, that he is a centre
forward not a winger, and when he is allowed to play up top he gets results,
this time a lovely timed header when he got between the 2 defenders and met a
brilliant cross by Pablo - the finish very similar to the goal v Derby (?) He
buzzed around and caused them problems all evening.
Everyone played their part last night, with all 3 subs also doing well. Dallas
showed what he can still offer something going forward and had one attempt just
wide and one lovely run when he actually took on and beat two defenders. Pearce
showed that he does still have a future- like the rest of us he must have
wondered why he did not get the nod ahead of Dallas when Douglas got injured.
Forshaw fitted into the system as if he was born into it and also went close
with a rasping drive, he replaced the slightly subdued Saiz and kept the ball
moving with little Batty-esque type passing and interceptions.

We could have had a hatful with Alisoki coming closest to adding to the total
with a great run and shot that came back from the inside of the post - he was
another player who was back to his best last night , with a cross in the first
half nearly causing a goal as the keeper could only parry it back into the
danger zone.
The second goal and the one that eased all our tension off the pitch and led to
total capitulation from Ipswich on it, was brilliant and well worked - a short
corner came back to Pablo and his cross was superbly dummied by Phillips(?) and
fell to Cooper who side footed it with his right from the edge of the box - yes
League -One Liam as some call him finsihed with real skill and aplomb. That
ended the game as a contest (if it ever was, since all they managed was one
easily saved header in the first half and were almost gifted a goal by Ayling
right at the death) and it became almost a procession of us coming forward and
having pot shots and scrambles - their keeper was their man of the match (and
beaten only by Pablo for THE MoM)
It was a perfect response to the Blackburn defeat - a bit worrying that Berardi
went off , presumably injured but with Bielsa, who knows it could have been
tactical. Bielsa again used his subs wisely and excitingly making a double sub
with over 30mins to go and no more cards to play. I love the way he re-acts to
what is happening on the pitch - some managers seem to pre-plan the sub one
striker for another on 60 mins every game or making no subs at all until time
wasting at the end of a game.
With other results going our way this week - Boro being held at home by
Rotherham and West Brom getting hammered at home by Derby means 'we are top'the
league, say we are top'the league' - these results confirming what we already
knew , this League is totally competitive and any result is possible in any
match. This also elevates our performance and result last night - Man City v
Cardiff or whoever is top and bottom of the Prem is pretty much a nailed on
home win, that is not the case in the Championship (look at Birmingham turning
us over when we were top and they were bottom or next to bottom) so beating
Ipswich whilst expected was in no way a foregone conclusion and we needed to be
at or near our best to do it, and that is what we were, back to our best
So onwards and upwards - with Forest to come Saturday evening - we will know by
kick off what we

could have been 7. Apart from first 10 mins and 5 minutes in 2nd half we were
much better team. Really good performance against a team who will be relegated
this season.
Scores:
Peacock - 8. Not much to do. One disallowed goal, a good early save, a few
back pass type shots and one dodgy cross that he had to parry in first half
Ayling - 7. Shocking start where he just kept losing out but he steadied and
played well
Douglas - 7. Steady away - decent going forward
Cooper - 8. One dodgy pass that put us under ressure but overall great
defending. Scored as well, really cant expect anymore from a captain and you
have to say that he is one of the most improved players from last season.
Jansson - 9. Rock solid defending. Back to his best
Siaz - 9. At the heart of everything. Needs a goal.
Philips - 8. One or two dodgy passes and tackles but overall I thought he was
very impressive albeit against pedestrian opposition.
Klich - 8. Should have had 2 but overall I thought he was very impressive. He's
strong, plays great football and is a strong runner. I think he's a great
player. See his cross for Robert's second goal.
Allioski - 7. Lively but annoying.
Harrison - 7. Lively first half, quiet second and should have had a goal after
a great ball through from Siaz
Roberts - 6. Really pleased for the lad. He took his goal well after a good
goal from Philips and then looked like he wanted the ball. He was terrible
first half and I would have considered taking him off but all credit to him.
Hopefully he can kick on against Brum.
Subs - not on long.

Re: [LU] Bielsa

2018-08-24 Thread Nigel Sykes
I hear what you're saying, but it's my opinion that a good team will always
impose their style of play on the opposition. Sure, they may tinker with minor
aspects, or a player or two here and there, but they should generally do what
they do and let the opposition worry about them. Going into each game thinking
about how to combat the opposition strengths more than how to impose your own
is what weak teams do. I don't think teams win championships doing that.

So I for one applaud Bielsa's attitude. I think it is what got us a draw the
other night, and I think it will instil a belief in the team that they can get
results, home or away.

I do agree though that he needs to find a way to keep the team playing the way
he wants them to without relying so much on Saiz. Because shutting him down
(and frustrating him in the process, so he gets petulant and booked etc.) was
what caused us the most problems last year, and without him operating freely we
will struggle to be as effective.

I remember posting a while back questioning how MB will cope if and when other
teams suss us out - I suggested that he would have a Plan B, C and even D -
from his presser yesterday this clearly is not the case
He has one Plan - Plan A and if that is not working he will tinker with
personnel etc until it does - he will not be changing the way we play.
Not sure I 100% agree with this Crespo story - I (as a parent and cub leader)
see nothing wrong with telling a youngster something that is not true if it
helps them in their development etc - surely part of being a manager is knowing
when to 'big someone up and when to pull them down a peg or two' - instilling
belief is not a bad thing even if you have to lie / exaggerate a bit)

I do get the meaning behind the story - a manager cannot tell a team how to
play and tell them this is the best way and then change it when the game is
going against them -but I am not sure he is correct, surely there is an
argument for 'horses for courses' and on occasion adapting your method to cope
with the opposition ?

I do have faith in MB and to be honest the early games have been great to
watch , even Swansea when we never really hit the heights was excellent at
times but I worry what will happen if we cannot impose our style on other
teams .
Various things went wrong last season - having a rubbish keeper and the defence
losing confidence in him, injury to ayling, Saiz being banned, not having a
reliable goal scorer etc BUT one of the main things was being 'found out'/
being bullied by the likes of Millwall and Cardiff - will this side be able to
stand up to teams like that ? Coming from behind twice at Swansea is a good
start but it is very early days
Anyway lets hope we can continue our early season form - Norwich away and
Middlesboro at home are both difficult games (not that many look easy on paper
in this Division) - so 4 or 6 points would be amazing.
I expected us to have 4* or 5 points rather than the 10 we have so it has been
a great start (fancied a point v Stoke with it being first game at home v a
relegated team, 0pts at Derby, 3 at home to Rotherham, and 0 or maybe 1 v
Swansea)

The eldest 2 have been to Elland Road but it was a traumatic match - the 1

tangible starting point to our subsequent decline - so none of us have been

Re: [LU] Kids

2018-08-22 Thread Nigel Sykes
Two boys in my squad. First one is 25, so was already around when I joined the
list in the mid-90's. Youngest is now 20. Both are Leeds fans, despite growing
up in Dublin and generally being the only ones in their classes at school.

Both have been to a few games with me over the years,  but neither are that
invested to be honest - the youngest hasn't really any interest in sport and
the eldest is obsessed with American Football (as am I,  to be fair).

Congratulations to all!

Here's hoping he's more lucky than my eldest son who was born in 1993, and
so has never seen his team win anything!

(I also foisted the support of the Washington Redskins on him, and they too
last won the Super Bowl in 1992. Poor lad...)

Hey all

Very pleased to announce the fact that on Thursday my wife Nicky gave birth
to our first son and Leeds fan, Finlay (Finn) James Murray.

Finn and I watched the Rotherham game in hospital together and he was very
pleased with our performance.

I am sure that he will think that us winning the league is just one of those
things that happens routinely - which is how I felt in 1992. I am so
re-invigorated with Bielsa that I have bought an android box so that I dont
have to miss any games this season from Perth - if they are not on that then
they can be streamed on the leeds website. I have also spent an
unreasonable amount of cash on LUFC baby tat to dress the lad in.

Anyway, I am just telling everyone I know because I can't smile wide enough
right now.

Re: [LU] Bolton - a few thoughts

2018-08-15 Thread Nigel Sykes
You can’t base everything on stats, but for what it’s worth our stats show that
our pass accuracy over the past several years is pretty stable at around 74%.
Our average in the first two games was 73.6%, so basically the same. No stats
for last night, but I suspect it would be slightly less, if anything.

For comparison, the better Premier League teams generally run well into the
80’s. I suspect that Bielsa will want us to at least improve on previous
seasons.

Apart from the lower energy of the B-team, the biggest problem this season is
passing. We got away with the passes to the opposition in the first two games
because we hustled so much to get the ball back. But last night the passing
was even worse and the hustle wasn't enough to balance it out.

Interesting game. We made 8 changes so big chance for the B-team. We started
like we have done in all the games and for 35 minutes I thought we looked good
with Pearce and Shackleton doing well as wing backs.
But then I thought we ran out of steam and maybe that's the difference in
fitness levels and skills between the B-Team and the first 11 ? I thought we
returned to some of the aimless square and backward balls at the back that we
have seen under previous managers. The gap between defence and midfield got
wider and as a result we became less effective. Bolton then began to cause a
threat and in the end they could have got a result and you have to remember
they made 9 changes too !
So in the end I was happy with the result but it made me think that maybe some
of our squad players are not going to be able to support a promotion push this
season.
Blackman - 7. one bad spill which should have been a goal for them.
Shackleton - 7. I like the look of this lad. Ok, he lost possession a few times
and looked at times like he was struggling but you can see he's got quality.
Pearce - 6. He's a bit more pedestrian than Shackleton and definitely second
choice to Douglas this season. Did well coming forward at times.
Jansson - 7. Looked a tad rusy, few dodgy balls but second half showed his
strength and experience in a few one to ones. Certainly didn't do enough though
to convince the manager he should be playing instead of Cooper and Beradi and I
never thought I would say that.
Ayling - 8. The ever dependable Ayling.
Phillips - 8. To be fair, he looked the most comfortable and effective in his
role which is suiting him down to the ground.
Saiz - 8. I thought he was playing at 75% but still looked a class above and
scored a great goal.
Harrison - 7. Tricky little player and he covered some ground. I think he'll be
pushing Allioski for that left sided position soon.
Baker - 6. I thought he was a weak link. One or two good forward runs but not
as solid as Kiltch.
Bamford - 6. Scored a good goal and looks like he's got a nice left foot but he
should have had a hat-trick. Bit of a dilemma here because I think he needs
games but it looks like he'll be stuck on the bench for a while.
3 games, 3 wins so all good but I think there's a few concerns.

It's a weird old game innit?

Just remember that we were playing like this early on last season - that

teams realised that if they bossed us about in midfield, we became useless.
Lets just hope that we have a solution to that this time around...

He is indeed capturing our hearts. With his style, could those who go to
ER comment on what changes he has made to the pitch size. Narrower or
wider? On one hand top play a pressing game would lean to a narrow pitch
but wing backs may point to a wider one.

Not bad but I prefer the one on waccoe translated from a French newspaper
(L'equipe) - especially the bit about 'degreasing' the squad by letting so
many players leave and references to dirty Leeds (according to them based on
the Paris riots) and our favourite chant - "we are the scum of Leeds and is

It does describe the union between him and us as 'incongruous"

Roofe- and played some nice one touch football against poor opposition.

Definitely not the best ever in terms of quality of football. But in terms of
entertainment? Sure - it took until yesterday's turgid few hours of dullness to
remind me what the World Cup was usually like, especially in the knock-out
stages.

Thankfully, there's only on more all-European tie left in this round, because
that's where the fun usually drains away.

I think Spain 10 years ago were brilliant, but it didn't do them much good this
time. Keeping posession is one thing, but being ambivalent about creating any
chances is another. They were so dull for most of the World Cup - given the
quality of players they have then what a waste that they really couldn't switch
into a tippy-tappy Mk 2 where creation of chances outsrips the desire to have
the ball.
What do others think about the standard of teams at this World Cup. The 'Best
World Cup Ever' comments are, imho, ridiculous. Some very average teams,
petulant and ridiculous defending/over-reacting. France looked very good
against Argentina, Croatia looked great (and very dirty) in the group but were
outplayed by Denmark yesterday and should have lost, Brazil, average as yet,
Russia - 2 excellent group games of old-skool togger, followed by a drubbing
from Uruguay. England - doing Ok to very good, but not yet played a decent team
with their first eleven - hope they can progress though and think they will.
But Greatest World Cup ever - do they not remember Jairzinho, Rivelino, Total
Football, even Germany v Brazil last time out?
I might change my mind if England win it though :-)

As the German coach of the time put it after their semi final defeat in

Re: [LU] Heckingbottom surprised at sacking rumours

2018-04-12 Thread Nigel Sykes
The smoke has well and truly cleared and the mirrors have been smashed. I saw
a table yesterday that listed Championship clubs by the ratio of wages to
turnover. Out of all the clubs in the division (except Barnsley, for whom the
figures weren't available) Leeds were bottom with 61%. 13 clubs had higher
wage bills than turnover, with Blackburn topping the madness list at 147%.

Now, putting aside the fiscal advisability of paying more than you make, and
given that we must surely have one of the highest turnovers in the league, one
has to ask how we can ever compete with our apparent "spend nowt and hope"
attitude.

Where is that other 39% of turnover going?

How can he be surprised given the results and performances since he came in ?
Two most worrying quotes, to me. "We’re going to have to work hard because
we’ve seen the calibre of players who are in this league, the calibre of clubs.
But it doesn’t mean we can’t do it if we’re all on the same page,
over-achieving and building a hungry, competitive squad."and then "It’ll be a
smaller squad and a hungrier squad"
Why, when we have the biggest crowds, most TV appearances and right up there
with biggest income (bar parachute payments) , can't we buy that calibre of
player so that they just need to do well not 'over-achieve' ?Also given that,
due to injuries we are playing two non full backs as full back and will be
starting with at least one young inexperienced centre half and no recognised
midfield player on the bench v Villa, isn't the squad already too small ?

I don't think it is just Saiz that Heck needs to get the best out of. He
has to find a combination and formation that gets the best out of all of
them.

As has been mentioned before, Only Jannson, Forshaw, Saiz and Hernandez (+
Ayling injured) look capable of performing well enough on a regular basis.
To be fair to Berardi, he is steady enough and even the much-maligned Cooper
is less error-prone than last year.

Of the others, I believe that Lasogga, Roofe, Alioski, Dallas, Vieira,
Phillips, O'Kane all have something to offer.
The problem is that they either have more flaws than attributes or are just
so inconsistent as to be unreliable.

Heck has to work out where/how to play them, to maximise their strengths and
hide their weaknesses.
Then work out what the f*** to do about the left-back and goalkeeper
positions, because Wiedwald and De Bock are too error prone to even make it
into the group above. If 5 of the 7 in that group play at their best we
can beat Wolves. If none do, we'll get hammered.

Re: [LU] 3 nil defeat

2018-03-03 Thread Nigel Sykes
Couldn't agree more about midfielders. And especially about Batts (my
favourite Leeds player). Been saying all season that we simply must get a ball
winning/distributing midfielder or we are entirely at the mercy of any team who
is willing to try harder than us in midfield (which isn't exactly hard!).

Cheers Nick. I've spent over 40 years watching Leeds week in week out so I like
to think I've got the measure of most players I watch.
Most players can be gauged within 4-5 games but I'd say the exception to this
is the centre back position and strikers. I've seen players arrive at Leeds who
look like a fish out of water. Chris Fairclough, Peter Haddock and Rio were all
awful on their debuts and first few appearances but all turned out to be good
signings ( not sure Rio lived up to his fee?).
In terms of strikers they tend to be rated until they come to Leeds - Keith
Edwards, Jim Melrose, Derek Parlane, George McCluskey, Noel Hunt, Barn door
Billy Painter, Darren Huckerby, Ian Rush to name a few.

But midfielders just stand out. They just need to make themselves available,
take the ball, and give it to someone. Easy ? No. David Batty was the best I've
ever seen at this. He is everything I've ever loved about football. Such
simplicity but brilliantly effective in making a team tick. Olivier Dacourt was
also good at this but he added a driving ability which allowed him to be more
attacking. Both truly great midfielders.

O'Kane has no awareness. Watch him when he gets the ball. He's head down , one
dimensional. It's either a pass backward or he just motors forward with no real
intention. Batty was ultra aware of his team mates. He got the ball, looked up
and passed but then looked how he can help. He was the cog at the heart of the
machine. It's a shame that O'Kane will never be able to perform at even 25%
effectiveness of David Batty , but that's why Bournemouth let him go !

We are Leeds!

Re: [LU] another new crest / badge

2018-01-24 Thread Nigel Sykes
I don't have too much of a problem with the salute. But the badge is awful
- like an MLS badge, or a kids' team.

But, someone put it quite eloquently on Twitter - saying that the salute is
an unspoken thing between Leeds fans. Like a masonic handshake or whatever.
If you know about it, you know about it. Putting it out there on the badge
smacks of something wrong... commercialism maybe. Whatever.

Leeds salute. Minute later it kicks off.

Huddersfield was the classic. Their whole stand emptied.

Much talk online (obviously). I'd say about 99% negative (at least!).
Personally, I think it looks like the badge of some knock-off, kids' pyjamas!

Yet to see one person who claims knowledge of being "consulted", so not sure
where this 10,000 number comes from.

Anyone wondering about the design process and probable target market should do
a Google image search on "Pro Evolution Soccer 2". Just sayin'...

Re: [LU] Shite

2018-01-01 Thread Nigel Sykes
I've been saying it for months, and I haven't changed my opinion - this team
could do okay if we just had a quality ball-winning/distributing midfielder
(in the David Batty mold). All this talk of signing more strikers or
whatever is bullshit. We need steel in midfield. Any team worth its salt
has worked out that if they boss the middle, we're useless. What we do
about this in this transfer window will say all we need to know about those
in charge of our transfer dealings. Sadly, I mostly expect more unknown
strikers to be signed. On loan.

Re: [LU] Barnsley

2017-11-25 Thread Nigel Sykes
I think the main difference today was that, unlike most teams in this
division, Barnsley hadn't realised, or simply didn't have the personnel, to
out-muscle us in midfield. Anybody who does that will beat us. Simple as
that. And unless we do something about that in January, we won't do more
than win the odd game against the really poor teams in this division.

Still... always nice to win. Especially at Oakwell (only the 3rd one in 30
years!)

Fellow Whites,
To lighten the otherwise very sombre mood on the list presently, have a look
at this video.
A nod to the first person who notices the potentially catastrophic mistake
the referee made midways through the second half :-(.
I would be fascinated with the views of people who have never seen this game
played before...

My last memory of this bloke Thirkers was at a List Meet at the Adelphi around
the turn of the century, where he brought along a carrier bag full - I shit you
not - of Hula Hoops! Yes, Hula Hoops! At least Kewell scored to take us to
victory, and I had Betty Boocock as Mein Host pre/during/post game! Not sure
what perverse idea was going through his mind with that carrier bag at the
time, and I call upon the good Dr Mike to analyse that one.
His last attempt at feeble humour at my expense was to mis-spell my surname
into derivatives of it, Castleford, Castleton, et cetera. So sad, and I'd
like to collect a quid for every time it's happened, either in jest or is all
seriousness.
I also have it on good authority that the supply of incontinence pads to the
North-East has grown since he re-joined the list. Sadly, his recent
contributions consist of blathering on about our third-rate team, and how much
better the Premmy League teams are doing!
Perhaps Thirkers is trying to emulate the legend and self-effacing ex-God of
the list, the one and only Voice Of Football, but he is pathetically failing on
every facet.
As we used to say in the Forces about such people as Thirkers... 'tries hard,

It was all very odd wasn't it?

As far as I can see, Rob had a little poke at his old sparring partner with a
fairly harmless (though probably ill-advised) joke about receiving book orders
from Israel. Then all hell broke loose from Dr Mike, who talked about emails
from Rob that suggest him poring over and referring to old posts of his. We
didn't see those, so either Rob sent something off list, or Dr Mike got his
knickers in a twist over something else. Somehow, I can't imagine Dr Mike not
revealing the alleged emails to the list, and yet he didn't. Either way, I
can't see why Dr Mike brought his ire to the list.

Wow, just got back from playing bridge, having a few drinks, and an excellent
Italian meal at Angelos (if you are ever in Port de Pollenca give it a try -
only open during the season) and I see this.

OK I've read through this thread several times now and I can't see anything
that relates to Dr Benjamin's post, so either he's suffering from paranoid
schizophrenia, or he's replying to a personal message to the whole list.

Either way it's time this was stopped, Betty can you please take him off the

Boys & Girls..

A few months back, I notified this list of the publication of my first
novel. I told you all that there was a little bit of an LUFC connection in
there. I thought that, plus list loyalty, would be enough to persuade you
all to buy it.

However, in the intervening period, I have been surprised to receive a grand
total of ZERO emails telling me how great/funny/fascinating etc the novel
is! I can only assume that NONE of you have bought the bloody thing!

Come on, be honest...put your hand up if you have bought my
novel.

H..just as I thought.

So I'm going to try again:

It is actually *incredibly *LUish! There's a whole chapter (or part of one)
concerning the League Cup semifinal away leg against Forest. Every single
character who had to have their name changed to prevent me being sued (ie
everyone in the book) has been given the name of a Leeds player!

Plus, it is super-footbally all the way through.

Basically, this book will appeal to anybody who...supports LUFC,
likes football, is a teacher (esp. an overseas one), is an expat, has been
to Morocco. How many of those boxes do you tick?

The book as been described by one critic as "James Herriot meets Hunter S.
Thompson." How appealing is that?!

So come on! Buy a copy now.better still, buy 5 and give the
others as xmas presents to anybody you know who also ticks any or all of
those boxes.

(Why this desperate plea? Well, I'm working on the next novel, and I need
good sales to persuade the publisher to give me a decent deal!)

Details: *"A Tangerine Dream" by Rob Heath. *Supposedly available at all
major bookshops (although I couldn't find a single copy in any shop I looked
in during the summer) and deffo on Amazon.

2017-09-26 Thread Nigel Sykes
That's disappointing. Do none of them have more than one screen (with 2 or
more boxes, obviously), so they can show different games in different parts of
the bar?

I remember once, being in Boston and wanting to watch a particular NFL game,
but the bars were all showing the Patriots' one. But the barman helpfully put
my game on one screen and I sat and happily watched it on my own!

Re: [LU] Millwall

2017-09-17 Thread Nigel Sykes
Pretty much how I saw it too. We are too lightweight in midfield to go up
against teams with big, bruising players like Millwall (and Brum) have. In
fact, this game just seemed like an extension of that Brum game in many ways
- half a yard off the pace and lacking in any first touch.

I'm a little disappointed in Alioski in the last two games - he'd looked
like a little terrier previously, all Batty-esque in his tackling - but he's
been a different player since coming back from the game off he was given.

Here's hoping that TC has learned something, but I'm not that convinced we
have enough midfield steel available elsewhere to make that much difference.

Guys (and gals?),

Have I fallen off the list, or are you all stunned into digital silence by
yesterday's events? Not a single email about the Millwall game?

Anyway, thanks to the official site's streaming offer, I was able to watch
this game as I have all of the other league games this season. I thought it
was the first game where Christiansen got his team selection completely
wrong. I've mentioned before that I thought we looked a little lightweight
going forward this season, Wood/Lasogga aside, and this game underlined the
point. Going into the Den with Hernandez, Saiz and Alioski in the first XI
was a mistake. This was exactly the sort of game in which Hernandez went
missing last season, and so it proved again. Our midfield were second to
every loose ball and, when they did have it at their feet, were muscled off
it too easily (as has frequently been the case this season). You have to
earn the right to play against teams like Millwall, and we played like this
information came as a shock. It should not have been.

A better team selection would have seen us go 4-5-1 with the feisty Berardi
replacing Anita, who had a shocking game, Ronaldo Vieira adding bite and
steel in the center of midfield, and Dallas on the wing, with Hernandez and
Alioski on the bench. I'd have been tempted to put Klich on the field in
place of Saiz as well. Once we've held our own in midfield and the Millwall
battlers start to tire, then bring on Alioski and Saiz on in the second half
to start to exploit the space that might have started to appear.

Christiansen's decision to make just the one enforced change (Shaughnessy
for the injured Cooper) meant we were facing a very physical game with a
first XI that was going into what was sure to be a very physical game less
than four days after ten of them had ground out a difficult win in a very
tiring game. Predictably, they looked exhausted long before the final
whistle. There's no point in bringing in 16 players over the summer if we
don't use the strength in depth that the squad now has.

Nonetheless, it didn't help that Cooper's injury from Birmingham game kept
him out of the squad. Shaughnessy didn't do too much wrong (although getting
booked for dissent in the first half was stupid, and presumably forced him
to temper his challenges in the second half), but the defence this season
has looked calmer with Captain Coops in command. Jansson's injury meant that
we were forced to chase the game in the last ten minutes a man down. We can
only hope it's not a serious injury (looked like a hamstring) and that
Pennington and Cooper recover quickly.

Christiansen and various players have said they have learned from the game.
I hope so. This was a needless three points to give away.

Cheers!

Re: [LU] Brum

2017-09-13 Thread Nigel Sykes
Nice report & I agree with it all. The main feature last night was just the
lack of 'sparkle' in us, which meant we were half a yard off the previous
pace, and many of the first-touch passes just didn't come off. In particular,
it made Saiz looked like one of those players who tries to be clever all the
time, to no real effect, when previously he's looked awesome. All of which
allowed a busy Brum team to get into the game. Our defence (especially Pontus)
were great, and we never really looked in much danger of losing, but a draw was
certainly a possibility. I thought Alioski looked the most lacklustre, which
is odd, given that he'd had a rest on Saturday.

"we are top the league, say we are top the league" - repeat and repeat Hard to
believe but we are indeed top of the league with a very impressive 17 pts from
7 games and a brilliant goal difference of 12 - with just two conceeded.
Ok last night was not Burton re-visited but i felt overall we deserved the 3
points in a hard fought game that ebbed and flowed in terms of possession,
terrority and chances.
We started very well, pretty much where we left off at Burton - really getting
at them, disturbing their rythmn and forcing them into errors. When we had the
ball we passed and moved it pulling them all over and creating gaps. It was a
joy to watch again, and it was no surprise when we scored - already forcing one
save and one goal line clearance from them. The goal whilst not a classic did
have a lot going for it - a lovely long ball over the top (from O'Kane ?) led
to Lasogga and the defender chasing it , Lasogga used his strength and power to
win the ball and then he hit it from a tight angle - he shoots as hard as
anyone we have had since Yeboah- and the keeper could only parry it. Saiz
showed both bravery and awareness following it in and beating both two
defenders and the keeper to force it over the line. it brought to mind the time
i lost it with Kilkenny at Tranmere away when he bottled it in similar
conditions. This showed that Saiz is more than just the maestro.
After the goal we tried to continue giving an exhibition but we looked
complacent and were over-doing it. You need to earn the right to play like that
and we had not done it. So from being brilliant we began to be sloppy and let
them get a foothold in the game. We nearly paid for our slackness when the
keeper came for a ball in a bit of a mix up and the Birmingham forward beat
him to it and the header looped over Wiedwald and towards the goal. However we
do not like conceeding goals and so Luke Ayling popped up out of nowhere with a
tremendous goal saving clearance So we just about went in at half time one up
and just about deserved it.

We hoped to come out second half pumped up but failed to do so and the game was
pretty even for the next 30 minutes - we even saw Wiedwald make a save ! At the
other end Lasogga and Saiz both came close. On the hour the largely
disappointing Alioski was taken off and replaced by Roofe who was unlucky not
to start. Roofe did add an edge of quality and commitment but by this time we
were starting to look leggy and tired. Lasogga especially looked ready to drop.
This allowed Brum to take a bit of control without ever really threatening as
Pontus just headed away anything in the air Our rthymn and choices for
substituions were further hampered as Cooper started limping and had to be
subbed. Beradi coming on and Ayling being moved to centre half. We continued
to look solid at the back but most fans were nervously watching the clock and
hoping for it to speed up Then horror of horrors, somehow the referee found 5
minutes of time to be added on. A worrying gasp went round the crowd, could
we last out ? We even got a break and took it into the corner to waste time -
a sure sign of the team wanting the final whistle.

Then just as we worried a bit Lasogga got the ball just over the half way line
and as he passed it forward to Dallas (on as a late sub for Hernandez) he was
fouled - great this would see out a few more seconds we thought, but no, the
ref decided to wave play on (rubbish decision we all thought in the
circumstances) as Dallas ran forward with the ball then cut inside and hit a
shot just inside the near post - 2 0 and only a minute to go . Another win,
another clean sheet and "we are top the league"
So not a classic performance after the first 30minutes and whilst I disagree
big time with Redknapp and his "complete and utter domination" comments I do
think they slightly shaded the second half without ever really looking like
scoring. I think had it stayed at 1 0 we would have gone 'yeah, fair result'
So the 6 points that we wanted from the two home games and our solid defending
goes on.

It's on the main website, in the LUTV section
(https://www.leedsunited.com/lutv). You have to register and then when you go

"International Match Centre" on the middle-right of the screen that appears
(nobody says they made it easy!). Then the live link appears (when there is a
game to watch, naturally). It being Leeds, when you click the play icon, all
it does it being up another play icon, in a different colour(!), but if you

I’m currently in France, so haven’t had to flaunt any rules. But I heard of
someone who was watching yesterday’s game in London. I’m guessing that they
will do an IP address check to block UK and Ireland IP’s, so you would probably
need a VPN (there are many available. e.g. TunnelBear, IPVanish etc.) to spoof
your IP to somewhere abroad, if you are in the UK or Ireland.

The sign-up asks you which country you are in, but doesn’t ask for an address
(it did ask for a telephone number, and I have a French one anyway, but that
probably isn’t significant). I paid through a PayPal account registered to an
Irish address, and that wasn’t a problem.

Have watched every game so far (I'm loving this new ability to watch them live,
if you're outside the UK & Ireland!). Thought Shaughnessey looked okay
defensively, but I agree with Verner in that he looks lacking in the passing
department. It's like Philips - everyone goes on about his work rate and the
number of tackles he makes - which is all great, of course - but his
distribution is woeful. Having said all that, you need ball winners, and if we
haven't got ball winners who can also pass the ball in Batty-esque fashion,
then we still need these guys.

My biggest rant has consistently been about Roofe. I cannot understand how he
gets a game.

But the biggest take-away so far is that we need time and a more consistent
team selection, to give them a chance to get used to each other more. At the
end of the day, I'm happier with what I've seen so far than I have been in

2017-08-16 Thread Nigel Sykes
The new scheme allows you to watch any non-televised game, home and away, for 5
quid a time (actually, you get 3 days access for your fiver).

Both teams however had a real lack of a cutting edge up front so all the fancy
dan stuff went with no reward. We had only one shot on target (apart from
Wood's offside 'goal') - a ball was played through to Wood and since he was a
lot closer to goal this time, I did think he may score, but no, he tried , not
very well, to chip the keeper and made it an easy save
Second half Phillips had a shot from range that fizzed past, Hernandez had a
awful freekick from a brilliant position , and Siaz pulled a shot just wide.
Fulham were as blunt as us and I can only recall Wiedwald making one save when
he came rushing out at the feet of the striker - good action from him. Fulham
aslo hit the post. Perhaps the closest we came was a great cross from Dallas
that just missed the outstretched foot of Wood
So after 32k on saturday over 28K (great for an ordinary midweek league game
for us) fans saw us pass the ball around a bit but have no shots or chances
worthy of the name. Things will need to improve. Fulham will be up there at the
end of the season, so a draw could be a creditable result, having said that 2
pts from 2 home games is not good enough and puts us under pressure to get all
3 pts at Sunderland
Some general observations - Shaunnessey is looking like a real find, he is
growing in confidence and may soon be giving TC a real selection headache.
Anita is a tidy player and good at this level, but not a left back. Saiz is
looking like the real deal - needs to cut out the moaning, diving, showing
imaginary cards and needs to be a bit stronger but I do have faith in him.
Alioski is the opposite so far he shows the odd flash of

Wow, hard to believe it's 25 years (July 1992) that this electronic mailing
list has been on the go, in many different guises over that time too.
Hat tip to Mark Smith and Gavin Burnage for setting it up in the first place
from suggestions made on rec.sport.soccer! See here for the earliest reference
I was able to find to the list there from a five minute search this minute.
Can someone find the original notice to confirm my July 1992 date?
James Lundon (Galway White and on the list since January 1993).
P.S. Yes, I still archive the list in total and, yes, I still haven't gotten
around to putting all these archives together in one place i.e. CD/DVD :-(.
P.P.S. Long live vax.ox.ac.uk!

Well it has taken a while but Simon Says has now signed a 4 yea deal. They
think he has cost £3m Top player in Spanish 2nd Division so a step up but does
seem to have something about him It appears as if we are signing two more in
the next couple of days - Alioski having a medical, he has the best pedigree of
the foreign imports, - and a young lad (another winger - someone at ER likes
wingers-) 19yr old Rayo Vallecano midfielder Alejandro Machuca , supposedly for
the u23s.

Get a defender sorted and make sure we do not lose Wood and things really look
good .
I do have some reservations over the manager and clearly not all the signings
will be a success but we seem to have a decent mix of proven players and
'gambles' and we do not need to improve much on last season results to get in
play offs at the very least. Apart from Bartley (and Monk of course) we have
not lost anyone of real importance- Taylor perhaps but he only played in half
the games and we did not miss him

Bellusci is going so that is another plus Dave

So trying to figure out how much the overseas subscription is going to cost.
Someone on social media posted £5 per game but in an article by Phil Hay he
states:
"The governing body recently created the iFollow digital platform to provide
foreign broadcasts of matches involving all 72 clubs in the Football League.
Leeds were planning to opt out of the EFL’s scheme and provide their own
service but iFollow is set provide United’s broadcasts under different branding
from September onwards. At the time of its launch, the EFL estimated that the
cost of iFollow’s streams to individual fans following one club would equate to
£110 a year.

Read more at: New viewing deal agreed for Leeds United’s overseas fans

So interesting from a couple of perspectives. Firstly, Leeds will be using the
iFollow service just branded differently. Secondly, there seems to be a cost of
£110 a year which is significantly less than £5 a game.
Does anyone have any more concrete information?

Re: [LU] Thomas Christiansen - no me neither

2017-06-15 Thread Nigel Sykes
Personally, I'm underwhelmed and not much more. We're being expected to place
faith in the unknown yet again, and I for one have got precious little left in
my 'faith bucket'.

I'm prepared to wait and see, before I judge - what option do I have, really?
But I can't be excited about this, and to be honest, I'm pretty fed up with not
being excited whenever things change. I can't honestly remember when I was
last excited by an appointment at Leeds - be it player, manager or board level.
Just endless, fruitless hope, hope, hope...

I liked the comment:
Christiansen joins the club from APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus after winning the
First Division title last season, as well as leading his former club to the
last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

Isn't that winning 1 game ?

To be fair I doubt any of us had heard of Wagner, the bloke from the wendies,
any of the last 10 Watford managers, pottetchino, etc etc. I suspect our new
leader has taken advice from many people on an up and coming prospect. But
lettuce also see who he has as his backroom staff.

This appointment lacks ambition in my opinion and feels like a financial one as
opposed to football. If this had been announced in the period when season
tickets were up for renewal it would have certainly had a negative impact.

Apparently AR was very impressed with TC at the interview, my question is how
did he even get an interview?

When looking for the qualities to manage us I would have expected the
successful candidate to meet most of the following criteria:-

  * Track record of management in English football and preferably the
Championship;
  *   Ability to attract better players than we have now;
  *   Some sort of silverware in management;
  * Able to build on what we already have.

He patently fails against 3 of that criteria. Seriously, I don’t care how good
he was at interview, if this is the best AR can do he should have fought tough
and nail to keep Monk.

You will have gathered that I am thoroughly pissed off. This is a massive
gamble and, as usual, it is us the fans whose hopes and aspirations are being
toyed with again.

It feels to me like we are doing it on the cheap yet again. Can’t wait to see
our squad been improved by all these superstars from Cyprus football.

Got a better track record than monk

No idea what he is like but didn't fancy any of the others we were linked with

Just because we haven't heard of him doesn't mean he is rubbish

Re: [LU] Monk resigned

2017-05-25 Thread Nigel Sykes
Sky Sports intimating that they have it on good authority that Monk wanted more
than the 1 year extension and that's all he was initially offered. Leeds
saying they would have been prepared to talk about a longer contract, but he'd
spat his dummy out by then.

Possibly, however let's wait and hear Monk's side of things. I was however
pointing out that if Cellino has been in charge he would have taken all the
stick for this however it appears that Monk is getting most now rather than the
new owner. What about the rumour that Radrizzani had been trying to get that
Italian Watford cunt to come and manage us before triggering Monk's one year
extension. That sounds more plausible to me. Get the coffin ready.

Re: [LU] Play off final is ridiculous

2017-05-20 Thread Nigel Sykes
Gotta agree with Dave. I have no problem with the final being at Wembley,
but all the other shite is ridiculous. The team that finishes 1st gets a
trophy, the one that finishes 2nd gets nothing but the reward of promotion.
So why should the team that eventually finishes '3rd' get a trophy? Can you
imagine them presenting a trophy for the winner of the 3rd-4th place
play-off in the World Cup?

Subject: [LU] Play off final is ridiculous

Is there a more stupid game in football than a play off final ?
Whilst I accept the inherent unfairness of the play off system, whereby a
team coming 6th can get promoted over a team coming 3rd, it does have some
good points. It really helps keep a season alive for so many teams and means
that unless you are in a relegation fight you almost always think 'if we win
these next few games we can get in the play offs'
I really like the play off semi finals and the atmosphere and tension that
they create with full houses at both games but the final is total nonsense I
have just had the misfortune whilst flicking through the channels to turn on
Sky sports just as the two teams (millwall and bradford) came out to
fireworks, the red carpet, the presentation line for dignitaries and then
the national anthemn - totally over the top and ridiculous This is NOT a cup
final ffs, or even a celebration of winning stuff, as per Community Shield
or Super Cup, this is two teams who were not good enough to win their league
or even come second - these are two teams who are basically, losers. Yet
here they are in a game that has all the hall marks of a real final, even to
the presenting of a trophy at the end of it This is not sour grapes on my
part - I felt it at Cardiff and even more so at Wembley when we were there-
it really bugs me.
IF this game has to be played at a neutral ground, then play it at one of
the old semi final grounds (Villa, Scum, Hillsboro etc) and play it with no
razzmatazz and no trophy (as i have said before it should be played at 3 in
the morning behind closed doors with the player being sneaked in and out in
disguise !) Yes promotion is great for the club involved but this actual
game does not deserve the accoutrements that surround it and I would say
this even if it end up being us involved next season So keep the play off
system but please change the format of the final Dave

It's been a remarkably bad turn of events, in the last few weeks. I know that
we weren't exactly world-beaters beforehand, and that we had quite a few "how
on earth did we win that?" games, but to go from a team with faint hopes of
automatic promotion to one without a hope of even a playoff place when there
was still a game to play? The turning point seemed to come at around the same

They can’t even beat a relegated side. It’s to be hoped they hang on to the few
good players they have, or next season they will be in the third division. If
it hadn’t been for the goal scoring of the lad Chris Wood, they would be with
Wigan and the drop.
See how vital the three points were to Burton Albion, last week it saved them
going down, just one point less and they would have been relegated on goal
difference, same as Blackburn Rovers have been.

I expect that they will attempt to limit access according to IP address. I
have a French address, so notionally could subscribe from there, but access
from the UK and Ireland will probably be difficult, even with that. We will
probably be able to use a VPN to get around that, but it will result in low
bandwidth and a poor quality picture. Time will tell, I guess. We just need a

More info:
The innovative new service will enable overseas EFL fans to follow their team’s
entire 2017/18 season The EFL has today unveiled iFollow, an innovative digital
live streaming and content platform that will revolutionise the way football
fans overseas can follow their EFL teams.

iFollow will, for the first time in English football, enable EFL fans based
outside the UK and Ireland to watch their team during the regular EFL season.
With an estimated 270,000 EFL fans based outside the UK, iFollow will allow
clubs to enable their supporters to follow the action wherever they are in the
world.

Kicking off at the start of the 2017/18 EFL season, overseas subscribers will
pay the equivalent of £110 per season for the service which will provide
coverage of up to 46 live games per club. More than 1,500 matches will be
available in HD quality, with iFollow showing every EFL league match live
unless that match has been selected by the EFL’s overseas broadcast partners.

Fans based in the UK and Ireland will still also have access to live audio
commentary, highlights packages and exclusive content as part of the new
offering, rebranded to replace the EFL’s existing PlayerHD platform.

At launch, the vast majority of EFL clubs have opted in to utilise the iFollow
platform and those who have not will have access to the same live streaming
opportunity and will provide their fans with access through their own club
digital services.

Research commissioned by the EFL suggests that there is significant demand for
a service like iFollow amongst fans based overseas. A survey of over 1,600 such
fans showed that 73% would be very likely or quite likely to subscribe to a
live match streaming service and almost half would be happy to pay an annual
subscription fee to do so. The findings suggest over 55% of the EFL’s fans are
located in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand where the
potential audience for the iFollow platform could reach into the hundreds of
thousands.

EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey commented: “The launch of iFollow is a notable
development and will revolutionise the access thousands of overseas fans enjoy
when following their EFL team.

“The new iFollow platform represents a potentially significant new revenue
stream for Clubs, while enabling enhanced engagement with existing fans now
living abroad.

“iFollow will also present the EFL with an important opportunity to stimulate
the interest of new groups of supporters who follow our clubs overseas, which
in turn will help support the growth of our competitions on the international
stage.”

The live streaming of matches will be available from the start of the 2017/18
season in conjunction with a brand new digital presence for clubs via official
websites and apps, together creating the largest sporting digital network in
the world. US-based company NeuLion, a market leader in online video delivery,
whose clients include the NFL, NBA and the Premier League, have developed the
integrated streaming service alongside UK company Realise who have built the
club websites. The two suppliers were appointed by the EFL in July 2016
following a competitive procurement process.

Peter Castlehouse, now then Buggerlugs. It is honestly great to see your name

list for a few years now and I should imagine a few have died. The oldest
member, a guy from Canada died, Grandpa Sykes he called himself, a really nice
guy. I know that there must be others. I remember the very sad story of the
young Australian lad who died so bravely keeping us informed with his
illness……..anyhow Pete, I will write a few silly tales as I did before, until
they get sick of me again and chuck me off. There were a few good comics on
here as I remember, Stotty, Betty the guy from that amateur Lancashire,
football club and a few others. I had the great pleasure of meeting an old
Leeds lad who I am in regular contact with, at Elland Road last season, the
very famous "Mad Mike" aka Michael Benjamin and his lovely brother Gerald. Mike
was over here on holiday from Israel. We had a lovely afternoon together at the
Fulham game, I can’t remember the outcome of the match but I remember we didn’t
win or draw.
Cheers Peter, thanks….

Subject: Re: [LU] A team to be proud of / Pontus

As pointed out below by Dave W we now have an issue with Pontus - without him
in the team our defence goes from rock solid - him and Bartley are a great
partnership- to one with at least one mistake in it. Cooper is so mistake prone
and causes the other defenders problems and affects their and the fans
confidence.
I really cannot see us winning the play offs without Pontus in the team. That
means he must play Monday and must get booked (and so miss the other 3 games) -
then we can play Ayling at centre back with Taylor and Berardi at full back -
that should be solid enough to prevent losing at Burton and Wigan and beat
Norwich , and that should get us in the play offs and a fit and rested Pontus
can come back in.
Knowing our luck the FL will decide that Pontus booking on Monday is 'illegal'
and give him a 6 match man. Does anyone know what happened to the 2 spanish
club (?) players who deliberately got booked so they could play in the Champs
League final ?
I do think in some ways the rules should be changed so the ban does not count
for the play offs but goes into the next season ? Although the play offs should
be an embarrassment played behind closed doors in the dark , two teams not good
enough for the top two, the FL have made it into a real cup final type game, at
Wembley with fireworks and a band etc (I was well annoyed pre Doncaster with
the razzmatazz around the game and then to get a trophy - what is that all
about ?) So this makes it a really big memorable game in the minds of the
players and one, like a cup final, they want to play in Dave

  .

Only downside is the Pontus booking. Now one booking from a 3 game ban. How to
handle that one becomes ever trickier.

Re: [LU] Leeds and plastic pitches

2017-01-31 Thread Nigel Sykes
There's a couple of things that bother me about us deliberately fielding a
weak team in cup games. Firstly, it is horribly disrespectful to the fans,
especially the ones who travelled, obviously, but even to the many thousands
watching on TV at home. And secondly, the argument that it doesn't matter
and we should concentrate on the league just doesn't hold water, in my
opinion. Winning breeds confidence and the mood of a team is a fragile
thing. Keeping the mood and the confidence high should be paramount, and
taking the opportunity to put a lesser team to the sword should be eagerly
grasped. Sure, we'd almost certainly have gone out to Arsenal in the next
round (unless they fielded a weak team themselves!), but unless they
slaughtered us, which I doubt, then we would likely come away from that
plucky defeat with our heads still held high.

As an aside, I'd be surprised if our Italian overlords were overjoyed with
the result, if not the policy that lead to it. Another lucrative, surely
televised full house at Elland Road, and the slim chance of knocking off one
the Premier League's top teams would have been desirable to them for all
sorts of reasons.

Dave wrote:
The plastic pitch on Sunday though was irrelevant in my opinion. If Monk had
fielded our strongest team, I believe we would have won. As it was, the
under 12s who hadn't played together (as it felt) hadn't much of a clue
whether it had been played on turf, plastic or even ice! Perhaps it was a
managerial professional foul by Monk, politely saying in disguise "We want
out of this competition now" similar to Brighton and a couple of others.
And just maybe, all the post match comments about it being his
responsibility etc were all pre rehearsed well in advance as he had a pretty
good idea of what was in store. Possibly Dallas and Doukara were included
as a mark of respect and to avoid any penalties for fielding a hopelessly
inadequate team as has beset some clubs.

When we won 6-0 at Sutton in 1970, it appeared that Revie played pretty much
a full strength team - good on him! Looks like Coventry did likewise in
1989. That of course does not make up for what happened yesterday, but it
is a sign of the times I suppose. The FA Cup is being debased in favour of
league progress, club status and of course, hard cash. A bit sad, but if
we make the top flight, all will be forgiven and forgotten apart from the
record books which I'm more than prepared to accept.

Apologies, I've wandered off theme

Yep - anyone who is bitching at the moment really needs to admit to
themselves that they're only in it for the bitchin'!

This must be the most optimistic time we've had in many, many a year, no?
Last night's game was the most encouraging one I've watched in many a year.
The team are playing better than my old, addled brain can remember (at least
10 years). We have a manager who seems to know what he's doing. We have a
(more than) functional defence, for f's sake!

I can live with the lack of idea about what the ownership are about. When
did we ever care about that, when the manager and team knew what they were
doing?

Now some, dare I say it, optimism! Haven't heard such positivity around

For me the most telling thing is the change is mood amongst the fans - I'm
walking into the ground expecting to see us win rather than hoping we won't
be too bad, and it's not just me. People are walking in with a smile on
their faces and walking out genuinely excited by what they've seen. Even an
impromptu chant of we are Leeds on the way out of the family stand
yesterday!
There's a buzz about the place I've not felt for a long long time and Monk
deserves a ton of credit. I was/am definitely in the Cellino out camp but he
deserves credit too for getting Monk and not appearing to be interfering
anymore and for the quality signings we've made.
For me, I think we need cover at centre back and up front but the most
important signings this window are Monk , Bartley and Jannsson.

Leeds are going up!

feel very very happy about that performance. I take on board Dave's comments
and Rich's scores on the doors. Totally agree.

If anything there is something special about Gary Monk. He fashions the team
to meet the circumstances (how much homework is being done here?). Shackling
Ince right from the off and taking on a fairly pedestrian defence at every
opportunity were to me the key to success.

If I have a criticism and it's a small one, I was disappointed at some of
the finishing. I still feel we should have had three in the first half and
another in the second. And that is over and above the referee's decisions on
two potential penalties. However three points are ours at just the right
point in the season.

The issuing of yellows to Leeds players is also a worry (especially in
Hernandes' case) but quite often they come because this team is so commited
which is a real bonus after some of the "leaner" games we have played. Note
to Monk: discipline.

To say I'm optimistic about the rest of the season is an understatement and
I can't wait for that final whistle at Wigan on the last day of the season.

2016-11-02 Thread Nigel Sykes
I'm not really in your declared category of interest, but as a
living-abroad-supporter, when I look to pick a weekend to visit 'home', I
usually look at the fixture list and I would generally be swayed by a 'bigger'
opposition more than anything else. More atmosphere at the game is a good
carrot, and the win/lose joy/pain is slanted more in our favour (beat a big
team and it's a bigger high, lose to a big team and you can convince yourself
it was to be expected anyway!). I might be dissuaded if the game was
televised, admittedly, but that would be a secondary consideration. Back in
the day I was a rain-or-shine regular, and it wouldn't have mattered whom we
were playing (Plymouth on a Tuesday - I mean, come on!). But these days I
would have really very little interest in seeing us play e.g. Burton Albion.

The OS has announced that even with the ESU open the game v Newcastle is a
complete sell out (with a couple of weeks to go)I have a genuine question to
occasional visitors to ER (the name 'part-timers' is a bit derogatory and this
is not a 'better fan than you' type email)How do you decide which games to go
to ?I have pretty much gone every week / had a ST for as long as I have been a
fan so it has never been a thing for me - unless I am holiday etc I go to the
game, simple as that.
I realise that every fan picks their 'level' of fandom - but I just wondered
how you pick and choose ?I go and watch Leeds United and therefore have little
or no interest in who we are playing - I can only ever recall wanting to watch
two opposition players - Gazza post Italia 90 and Paulo Wanchop (who in the
event was injured on the day) I think if I was having to choose, for whatever
reason, then I would not go when it is on TV, I would prefer teams like Burton
who I have not seen before, and if money is the issue - cheaper games.Yet our
history seems to show that fans turn up to watch games against what are viewed
as 'bigger teams' eg Scum, Scouse Arsenal in Prem and Huddersfield and now
Newcastle (and no doubt Villa) in this Division.I get that a winning team also
brings fans back.I understand that you may take your kids to the nearest game
to their birthday or as a Christmas treat etc, or non UK fans going to games
when they are in England But my genuine question is to those who
could go every week but who opt to pick and choose their games, how do you
