So as things stand, three teams are opting out. Leeds being one of them.
Is there a class action precedent we can use to get all teams in, regardless
of individual club preference? And, if necessary, get other list of other
teams to join the cause?
Just a thought

If I were a Tory party strategist, I would 'manoeuvre' some faceless grey
sap into the role rather than the idiotic Johnson who will inevitably make
things worse, both at home and in Europe. Sadly I think there'll be some
level of civil unrest in London by groups who 'look foreign', which will
then divert attention away from the real issues (poverty, dangerous housing
etc) onto law and order!

Theresa May is totally out of her depth!

Maybe not many people on the list know will remember Andrew Keogh. He was
only occasionally on the list
and never posted. However he was a lifelong Leeds supporter. Back in the
days of yore (otherwise known as
the 60's and start of the Glory Years) Andrew, Tim Greenwood (who is on the
list) and I as youthful
teenagers all lived in Harrogate and apart from common political interests
we shared a passion for Leeds
and regularly made that pilgrimage together to Elland Road. Though we have
gone our various ways, Tim in
the states for the last 30 years, Andrew in London and me all over the place
the passion for Leeds has never
died. Andrew has brought up both his boys to support Leeds.

Andrew sadly died a week last Saturday. His GP had referred him to hospital
in March when he couldn't work
out what was causing Andrew's back problems. The hospital diagnosed lung
cancer which had spread to a
secondary cancer in the bones. After radiotherapy he was sent home but was
soon back in hospital, then to
a care home but had to go to (another) hospital. During this period I had
managed to get over a see him a
few times. Then a week last Thursday he was moved to a hospice so I arranged
to come over and see him
again but he died on the Saturday. I am now over for the funeral tomorrow.
Maybe not everyone but several
of us there will be wearing Leeds United scarves.

Andrew, you will be missed. May you take a bit of Leeds and Gods Own County
with you.

Marching on together

My last memory of this bloke Thirkers was at a List Meet at the Adelphi around
the turn of the century, where he brought along a carrier bag full - I shit you
not - of Hula Hoops! Yes, Hula Hoops! At least Kewell scored to take us to
victory, and I had Betty Boocock as Mein Host pre/during/post game! Not sure
what perverse idea was going through his mind with that carrier bag at the
time, and I call upon the good Dr Mike to analyse that one.
His last attempt at feeble humour at my expense was to mis-spell my surname
into derivatives of it, Castleford, Castleton, et cetera. So sad, and I'd
like to collect a quid for every time it's happened, either in jest or is all
seriousness.
I also have it on good authority that the supply of incontinence pads to the
North-East has grown since he re-joined the list. Sadly, his recent
contributions consist of blathering on about our third-rate team, and how much
better the Premmy League teams are doing!
Perhaps Thirkers is trying to emulate the legend and self-effacing ex-God of
the list, the one and only Voice Of Football, but he is pathetically failing on
every facet.
As we used to say in the Forces about such people as Thirkers... 'tries hard,
fails miserably, but works well under constant supervision...'

As far as the acid test is concerned, yes I would.
Quote from you ... "The gratuitous insults that are now lingua franca are
ruining this list. Caustic, pithy statements are one thing. But to casually
label and deliberately insult are another" Unquote
In your professional role Mike, how would you describe the comments directed
at me from that person? Being over seventy years of age matters not, and
should never be used as a an excuse.
I would call it childish, and I have had enough of the bloke, as have many
others.
Basic politeness does not exist in any of Graham Thirkill's recent posts.
His main intention is to stir angst and acrimony, and the sooner he is gone
(banned) the better.
He is stifling participation in any discussions by verbally attacking any
thread with his stupid responses. Tell me what part of that is good for
this list?

was utterly gobsmacked to hear in a PM that one guy gets a pleasure in

The gratuitous insults that are now lingua franca are ruining this list.
Caustic, pithy statements are one thing. But to casually label and

Three things I have in common with Thirkers. We are both over seventy, have

So FFS, MOT with some respect. The acid test is, would you say to the

If the team had a David Batty-esqe midfield leader, the whole team wouldn't
have been allowed to give up, and we'd be in a much better situation than we
are now. I made a point of watching Phillips in the first half, and he spent
almost all that time drifting towards the Brentford player with the ball, then
when the ball was passed, drifted towards where the ball had been directed, yet
he still didn't manage to get closer than ten yards to any Brentford player.
Complete and utter waste of time, and should be sent out with the reserves for
a month. Maybe then he will start fighting to play and fight to keep his

Have you lot ever tracked his movements during a game? He seems to be

On paper we have a decent chance of 9 pts (7 would be fine in reality) but
whether we do or not may depend on which players TC picks Most of the team
picks itself most of the time - but even there TC needs to work out if any
of them are tired / not quite fit or need a rest with 4 games in little over
a week (from Hull to Forest), Can Vieirra and Phillips both play in all 4 or
does one or other need a rest and allow O'Kane back in ?

He pretty much always has to pick who is centre forward and who makes up the
third of the three behind the striker alongside Saiz and Alioski Today the
choice is does he keep Roofe there on the back of a hat trick in the last
away game or bring back Lassogga who gave Burton such a hard time in the
home fixture ?
Then does Hernandez get his place back after his class goal v Hull or does
he keep Cibicki since Hernandez has let us down away from home at times ?
Indeed is Saiz fit enough to get back in the side today with Birmingham and
Forest to follow in the next few days These 3 games could go a long way to
cementing our place in the top six and give us confidence for the (in
theory) harder games to come but that depends on us getting it right So in a

I have been getting a lot of stick today based on the performance / result
yesterday - as I told them all I am used to it - Histon, Sutton over the last
few years.
I think it is different from last year v Sutton when Monk , to try and prove a
point, picked a load of no-hope kids etc, TC has picked a team full of squad
players, albeit very few actual "first teamers"

TC has explained the selection stating that is is very much the same thinking
that got us 5 1 results v Newport & Port Vale and a winning draw v Burnley and
a decent performance at Leicester. There is some truth in this and if we had
won I think most fans would have been OK with it.
When I saw the team I was content with it - I did worry and in fact pointed out
on here- that the bench only had Saiz who could come on and change things if
the scoreline was going against us (I did not think Saiz would manage to not
touch the ball when he came on) It is just how things are these days - the
League is all important and all teams in the top two Divisions load their team
with squad playersWe should have had enough quality to overcome 4th division
opponents and enough players should have been trying to impress and force their
way into the first team to have a high degree of commitment.
It all depends now on how we re-act - last time under Monk his plan backfired,
he was not given more money to strenghten the squad and the defeat seemed to
knock some of the stuffing out of the first team players, even though they did
not play, and led a lot of fans to fall out with Monk Hopefully the performance
of Lassogga and Grot will mean that TC (and Orta) change their minds about the
need for another striker - Lassogga is lazy and Grot needs to go out on loan or
play for the u23s for a bit to see if there is an actual player in there or not
- he is nowhere near first team level at this point.
It should confirm the decision to get rid of Brothwick Jackson if we can - and
bring in the Belgian left back. It also shows that Anita is not a left back -
he was given a torrid time from Nouble(sp)I have no idea why Pennington did not
play - Everton are out of the cup so having him cup tied does not seem to be a
problem.
It should stop fans asking why Klitch is not getting a game etc For me, I was
content when I saw the team and in my ideal scenario we would get two or three
up with goals from Lassogga and 2 from Grot (to get their confidence up) and
then Clarke could come on a get a 4th (laid on by Rey !) and things would look
great - this is far from what happened and with Saiz looking at a 6 week ban we
have a lot of problems It is still much too soon to sack TC but it does
increase the pressure on him, and a win at Ipswich will assign yesterday to the
history books - a defeat there and a bad result v Millwall and the whole season
will collapse Dave

I am ashamed of Leeds United today - and that's strong words. Is that TC's
undiplomatic way of saying were not interested in the FA Cup? Perhaps he was
pleased in some demented way with how it all panned out and today's result is a
secret success in his book although he'd never admit it. Our passing was awful
and embarrassing and we couldn't contain Newport. I saw this result coming a

paying their money - what an insult to them, our club and the competition

At least the likes of Villa went out to lower league competition with some

Re: [LU] Millwall

2018-09-17 Thread Peter Castlehouse
Seriously have to wonder what you lot want out of this team? First post for
the season, but I believe that this team is the best I have seen since the game
before Roma in the early 2000's!
A significant factor for me to get excited is the new (old) tactic to keep the
ball on the ground, pass it around, and seeing the absolutely mesmerising way
in which our players are weaving through the oppositions that we have played so
far (with the exceptions of 'Boro and Millwall)
I concur with Mike Gardiner. This is the best we have seen in eons, and if we
beat Preston with the squad we have now (note that I did not say depleted) then
we collectively should shut up and leave Mr Bielsa to get on with his
magnificent work.
I watched the Millwall game (TV) and thought that we could have won it until
our players ran out of energy in the last five plus minutes

To be fair watching the various highlights packages (sky, QUest and LUTV) all
the chances till the last 3 minutes (when we were under real pressure and lucky
not to concede) were ours - Roberts had 4 half chances (a couple actually more
than 'half') Alioski had that header. Cooper with header (or Ayling at far
post) should have scored from that chance , Baker and Siaz both had shots from
decent distance / angles that they blazed over. Apart from the goal the TV
could only find that looping header from Zlatan , sorry Morison, that BPF took
under the bar, from Millwall until the couple of scrambles right at the end
All the possession / passing stats also favour us but I never put any store in
them - I look at what we deserved out of a match mainly based on chances not
passes between the centre halves

The next two games will show if we are the real deal (I know we keep saying
that with Stoke, Derby, Boro, Millwall etc) - we have drawn 3 out of the last 4
but now have 2 games that are easy on paper - 6pts will show we really are a
good side and that we have a genuine chance - 4pts will keep us on track
mathmatically with 4 pts every 2 games (win at home / draw away -the old
adage) 2 or less will show that auto promotion will remain a pipe dream and
even the play offs could be too much Just hope the fans who are turning out in
numbers (Brum almost a sell out and Preston good for a midweek game) stay
behind the team and do not get on the back of players - especially Roberts if
he does not take any early chances that come his way Interesting times and
hopefully good ones Dave

Re: [LU] u23s - F***ing shambles

2019-05-07 Thread Peter Castlehouse
Dave,
That sort of home ground organisation also seems to sum up the LUFC coverage on
LUTV for the whole season too, a f***ing shambles.
Being 12,000 miles away, we really don't have much choice when our games are
not covered by our local cable (Foxtel), so when we revert to LUTV we pay £5 a
game to watch.
Pitiful, and at times dire, is all I can say about LUTV.For an owner who
allegedly owns a media empire, he needs to look in his own back yard. Crappy
camera work, plentiful drop-outs, inadequate equipment (from the ongoing
failures of microphones and camera coverage, etc)

To resurrect the 'word of the year' from a few years ago, yesterday was a total
'omnishambles' - they could not have organised worse if they had tried !
We got a taxi to the Old Peacock and were there for 11.30 - 15minutes before
the turnstiles were due to open - the queue was already down the side of the
West Stand, past the South Stand , past the Bremner statue and as far as the
eye could see past East Stand - thousands had turned out For some reason the
club had only expected 3,000 despite the fact that the u23s had sold out (with
fans acutally paying) at

Re: [LU] Hull

2019-12-11 Thread Peter Castlehouse
I think Richard has spent too much time on the Beaujolais pre-match to
effectively rationalise the game.
Pablo had his worst game all season, was second last in the running for all
available balls, and should have been subbed off at half time!
As for Harrison, he's provided the assist for many of our goals this season and
he didn't get any feed from Pablo - Coincidence?
Klich - "Lots of running, but little end product". apart from sprinting 80
yards down the field, putting in a superlative pass into the penalty area,
which whilst not ending in a direct goal, the ball managed to hobble to Gianni
Peppa Pig Alioski who buried it!

This match took a similar pattern to a lot of recent matches in that we had all
the possession but failed to convert due to terrible final balls particularly
on the right side. I thought Hull liked lively especially for 15 minutes in the
2nd half when I think they took control but we managed to limit them to a few
chances. Here's my scores:
Kiko - 8. You've got to hand it to the lad he's put last season behind him and
now looks the part. Point blank saves to keep us in front in the last two
games. Ayling - 7. Having suggesting dropping him in place of Dallas on the
right, I have to admit he's played really soldidly recently and actually looked
good going forward. Berardi -9. I thought that was possibly his best game for
Leeds. First to every ball and didn't give their guys a kick at times.
White - 8. Solid as usual against tricky Hull attackers. Dallas - 8.
Defensively did well. Philips - 7. Some good work. Got caught in possession
once first half but got away with it. Hernandez - 7. Great pass to Costa for
the goal and he was busy as usual. There was also a fair number of passes that
went astray as usual. I like his corners better than Philips. Costa - 7. Looks
lively and I like the way he moves across the grass and creates space. Needs an
end product though and by that I don't mean a deflected OG Harrison - 5. Ok,
I'm going to be slightly controversial here and say I don't think this lad is
good enough. His final ball nearly always disappoints (ok not always e.g.
Huddersfield) but he usually fails to find a white shirt. He also rarely beats
his man. Bamford - 6. Worked hard but should have scored. Klich - 6. Lots of
running but little end product.
Subs:
Allioski -9. Superb. I think he's a great little player and his crossing is so
much better than Harrisons.

Re: [LU] Cellino

2014-07-20 Thread Peter Castlehouse
I cannot see how anyone can be pessimistic at this part of the close season.

Let's look at where we were last year at the same time, and compare with now:

Last season:
Bates in charge - a ranting 85 year old narcissist who had avowed to bring LUFC
to absolute destruction (nil out of nil, Sorry Ken)
New players? ah forget it

This season:
Cellino in charge - a ranting football crazy Italian who promised to buy back
Elland Road, inject new blood, and take Leeds to the Premier League (that's two
out of three so far)
New players? Yep, and still counting...

What's your fecking problem you lot?

a VERY optimistic
Pete C

>>>Alec quoted as suchly:
Ah, but as with all good conniving folk, he didn't say how he was going to pay
for it. He didn't say he was going to buy elland road back with his own money,
he simply stated that he would buy it back. He obviously found an easy way by
selling our best asset.

Having said all that, 11m for Ross was ridiculous, especially as he wanted to
leave. Nobody in their right mind would have turned that down. So the key
question is whether Cellino is going to screw us over like master bates did. Is
he going to be net investor rather than sucking us dry?

The jury is still out.

The 'Headline read

Leeds United - Still Damned after all these years? Fans should be wary of
convicted fraudster Massimo Cellino, as Italian owner promises Premier
League football by 2016

* Italian has told players to bring their own sandwiches to
training, buy their own matchday socks and demanded they live in Leeds

* He hired Dave Hockaday off the back of seven defeats in eight
games for Forest Green Rovers

* Cellino has promised to buy back Elland Road 'by November' and
said the club will be playing Premier League football within two years
* Fans are believing in the Italian after the nightmare they have
endured under owners like Peter Risdale

It then gives a summary of Cellino so far and a few other things re Bromby
and Naylor Is mainly anti Cellino without being a real hatchet job and sort
of sums up many of the views on this list and elsewhere

Oh, enough of this shit

Ian Murray, on what evidence do you base YOUR opinion that Hockaday is shit?
Have you attended each and every one of the pre-season friendlies?Have
we seen the team play any team of such worth that we can gain a comparison
with previous "coaches" - huh?

For fuck's sake, take your Hockaday hating opinions to a Twitter site or
something, I am now convinced beyond doubt that you rank alongside one other
notable yet long gone lister who did nothing but complain...

Pre-season is nigh finished - and not one thread about Curry Houses - we are
indeed doomed :)

Hi Mike,

I am the List’s “Dark Hours” moderator, so I get to approve or reject moderated
emails - and as you will notice, I have approved all of yours today as they are
neither profane or defamatory J

No problems with letting your emails through, and acting in the hours which are
daylight for me, and sleep hours for others, it maintains a sense of
now-ish-ness

For this I have the blessing and approval of the List Moderator-In-Chief - yep,
that makes me Betty’s bitch J

Re: [LU] Bellusci charge

2015-02-07 Thread Peter Castlehouse
Rich,

It's a bit late to hit the delete key on an email when you are reading the
bloody thing! The subject was Bellusci, the rant that we know of was
completely off-tack-ish. As for the Question Time comparison, their parent
company has a shit-load more money and bigger and better lawyers than Betty can
afford.
I'd rather we keep all the emails coming through, and then individuals can
block the ones who get abusive towards them. It's not hard to set up.
Or... Betty and other moderators must censor every email. Not a nice scenario.

I quite enjoy the arguments . You can always press delete. No worse than
watching George Galloway getting baited by a Predominantly Jewish crowd on
Question Time. George looked a little uncomfortable and definitely on the back
foot.

Re: [LU] Box

2015-02-18 Thread Peter Castlehouse
I was frequently invited to the Sydney Football Ground into the Australia
Post 'box'. It had one of the best views, and invariably I knew absolutely
no-one in there - as we were all 'box visitors', Frequently turned up after
having two beers on the way, showed my 'special Corporate Box invitation'
ticket at the correct place to enter, and got absolute VIP treatment all the
way to the 'Corporate Box', and from then on enjoyed that same VIP treatment
until full-time soaking myself on Australia Post profits. Then, full time
whistle got turfed out with the rest of the invitees, as we were all
drunk as skunks on free beer and spirits!
My suggestion would be to dress as if going to a posh presentation (smart
but not that casual) as you will get served first at the free hospitality
bar
Have a great time, you might even get to see some entertaining football or
something outside the confines of the 'box'

No, not a message about fisticuffs, or cricketing protective wear, or
theatre seating.

I've been invited to a box for the Watford game, inclusive bar and
everything. I'm chuffed :-)

I've not been in a box before. Are they full of wheeler dealer business
types? Do I have to wear trousers? Is everyone completely hammered by KO,
given it's a free bar? Where are they in the ground? I suppose the lad I'm
going with will give me some of this info next week when I speak to him, but
thought I'd ask here for a heads up.

Look at it as an opportunity Dave. We can go there and win with S Taylor,
Wooton, C Taylor, Cooper, Bamba, Austin, Murphy, N'Goyi, Byram, Mowatt,
Morison‎. In many ways that teams looks stronger. ‎ Worth noting Bamba and
NGoyi don't seem to be caught up in it from reports. Or Montenegro (for what
that is worth). But will surely increase any dressing room divide. And you are
left with a pervasive sense of who is behind creating that divide behind the

So, perhaps the whole hierarchy of FIFA's executive (all except the biggest

Fellow listers,

A couple of weeks ago I posted a link to a video on YouTube of me
'performing' a poem about Greggs outside outside Greggs.

Well, today is the closing date for voting and I've slipped down the
rankings to number 5 from 1.

I would really appreciate if you could take a minute of your time to give
the video the 'thumbs-up' on YouTube.

Alec, if you have Foxtel, you can subscribe to beIN Sport, ch 525, it
whowed the game last night live :)
It's relatively expensive, but when Leeds do appear on Sky in the UK you are
more or less guaranteed that BeIn Sports will be showing it.
Still, cheaper than a flight home and ticket for one game lol

What a fantastic report, I am almost breathless after reading it! Halfway

I wouldn't say it about anyone. Beckham is a fine footballer and his wife a

Always amazes me that apart from one thing I agree with Rob entirely.
This letter was a 100% spot on.

As always, the King of Tonga makes his bid for List Post of the Year.
The bit that gave him my vote was the last sentence, as I am often in the
same predicament...

If the game at Bramall Lane was a League Cup match then I was there.

Alex Sabella, who was essentially Currie's replacement at Sheff Utd played,
but Currie ran the show. Of course Sabella was really Currie's replacement
at Leeds too. Also Gary Hamson, later to play for Leeds was in the Sheff
midfield.

TC was just about my favourite ever player, both for his ability and his
attitude. He didn't get stuck-in as such, but even when Leeds were being
dominated, he used to try to wrestle back control of the game. I think he
fervently believed he was the best player on the pitch whatever company he
was in. His Leeds career probably coincided with the time when I went to
every match, which is why I am probably biased towards him.

2 of my favourite moments were in away games:- At Chelsea, he nutmegged
young-pretender Ray Wilkins in front of their, then new, main stand.
Wilkins chased Currie towards the touchline and steamed in. Currie beat him
again with a drag-back and left Wilkins sprawling off the pitch. Currie
flicked the ball forward down the line, but before chasing it, did a quick
bow to the home hoardes, who went mental.
The Leeds fans loved it though.

The other, was a rarely shown goal in the first game of the 1978-79 season
at Highbury. Although it was on TV, Brady's goal in the same match
unjustifiably got more TV repeats.
It was a carbon copy of a goal scored by Nelinho of Brazil, a few weeks
earlier in the World Cup 3rd place match v Italy. It was almost as though
he'd seen Nelinho do it, and thought 'I'll try that in the new season'.
Nelinho's goal is quite easy to find on You Tube, but Currie's is a bit
harder to come across.

Anyway, forgive me for such indulgence. I only wish I could remember what
happened yesterday.

KOT.
