For clarity, we lost the game because we conceded a goal, Bamford's miss meant
we were still level even after he missed it - he wasn’t responsible for their
goal!!

I regret getting sucked into whatever world Michel Bonjamming inhabits - I know
it's an exercise in pointlessness.
I may not be a psychiatrist, but this is an 'odd' contribution to a football
list - it seems his outsider status goes much further than football? I'll say
no more, as it's hard to know what to say?
Meanwhile, back to football, I still maintain tonight is a must win game, and
must play well too, because the Southampton game brought back some very recent
painful memories, and the new shoots of discontent are starting to appear!
Rodon at the back is a must for me.

Still, now that he's gone we can all talk about him behind his back. He was a
prickly, loopy contributor wasn't he? Seemed like a deeply unhappy person at

P.S. Anybody sad to hear of the death of Francis Lee? No, me neither.

I wonder if you have any.
How on earth my abysmal ability to remember names and terrible spelling leads
you to racism is a stretch. Even your Brownian-movement-like logic shudders
under that burden.

I had some introspection as I walked out, not only on the LUFC list and
WhatsApp. I told the National Insurance & the Ministry of Health to fuck off.
What is there in common? It's not an age issue, as you may think. I decided
that life is too short to pretend I am happy and belong when I do not.

The boards I sat on in both places are known to be institutionalised-central &
not functioning to promote patient’s well-being. In both cases, after a long
process over the years, I knew that I neither identified with their aims nor
wished to be identified with what they were doing. I am very happy with a
Health Provider who appreciates what I am and what I do. Along with patients’
gratitude, what more do I need?

The same goes for LUFC and its supporters, as represented by you. I love Leeds;
it is a major part of who I am. With my parents’ passing and the exodus of so
many Jews, the Leeds I knew is gone.
As I have often said, the one place I felt not merely a part of a minority but
‘completely belonged’ was ER. That sense of belonging whilst being a minority
is also something integral to my ‘worldview.’
Even so, people like you make me uneasy, apart and alone again.

I do not belong with you, I am uneasy with you, the city has changed and is not
what it was, and the team is no longer the main standard bearer of Leeds—it is
something else. I do not know what. But whatever it is, it is not what I fell
in love with and Marched On Together with.

That’s my answer, John & you can do what you want with it. If you wish, post it
in my name on the list– I have left.

Keep well

Re: [LU] Scum

2023-02-09 Thread Mark Tuffey
What a magnificent team performance given the situation. I thought the game
completely changed during a three minute period when both Adams and then
Mckennie got yellow cards. This basically neutered their aggression which up
until that point had the SCUM midfield shaking in their boots. From that point
forth Adams and McKennie had to be concerned about staying on the pitch and
this allowed SCUM more time on the ball and created fewer turnovers for us to
transition with.
Hopefully the "Bash Brothers" can repeat their performance on Sunday, as it
didn't look like Fernandez, Fred and Sabitzer liked it "up 'em".

Long time since I posted last time… Some 20 years ago 浪

I was on the excellent digest for most of these years - until the WhatsApp chat

Like many of us I saw them as logical steps in modernising communication whilst
not disrespecting 30 years (!!) of Leedslisting, and joined.

Have had a great time on them since.

Now read that Richard & Verner chose to leave - I hope you guys can find a way

This list is 29 years old in July, leeds-uni...@vax.ac.co.uk. It grew out of

I checked Google's archive of rec.sport.soccer and noted a message from Declan
Mc Mahon from June 1992 but it got no real traction at the time. Gavin Burnage
(with Mark Smith?) did move definitively in late-July 1993 with a proper list
mechanism and we were off. All three are still with us, I believe.

The recently-founded Leeds United fanlist has now become a properlistserv list,
so Whites fans everywhere are invited to subscribe tothe "new" list. (Most, but
not all, of the members of the old mailalias list have been contacted with
these details; apologies to anyoneout there who's been wondering what happened
to their Leeds mail.)To subscribe to the list, send a message to
list...@vax.ox.ac.UKwhich says this:
SUBSCRIBE LEEDS-UNITED Gordon Strachan
You put your own name in instead of Gordie's, of course -- thismeans that list
members can see who you are if they want to whenthey "review" the list (more
details on that when you subscribe).
To send messages to the list, you write to leeds-...@vax.ox.ac.UKand your mail
is distributed to everyone currently subscribed.
Once you've been added to the list, you get a message back tellingyou so. It
also contains important information about how to uselist...@vax.ox.ac.uk -- so
it's best to hold on to it, maybeeven print it out, for future reference.
If you have problems getting on the list, get in touch with me: I canput you on
myself if need be. However it's best for everyone tosubscribe themselves if
possible, because that way the listserv knowsexactly what your address is.
That's important because it only allowspostings to the list if the address in
your mail corresponds exactly toyour address on the list.
I hope everything's clear; if not, get in touch with me (detailsbelow) and I'll
try and sort things out.
Cheers,Gavin

Much earlier in the match I was screaming at the TV for our defenders to force
Bown always right...understanding his weaker foot. But what does veteran Cooper
do, he forces him inside onto his left where he can lash one towards goal.
Shocking mistake and lack of awareness from our skipper.

Yup, Alan and I had the same chat at the time. He wondered where the f**k he
was to let the cross over, and I was surprised to spot him on the edge of the 6

Given what we also saw against Fulham, we need the likes of Cooper etc to reign
him in a bit to stop his random wanderings…

Subject: [LU] The healthy of this list - some musings!

The era of the pure e-mailing list is almost gone! I am still on a lot of
old-style mailing lists so know better than many. The only one that is going
as strong as ever is something called RISKS [ACM FORUM ON RISKS TO THE PUBLIC
IN COMPUTERS AND RELATED SYSTEMS (comp.risks) - Peter G. Neumann, founder and
still moderator]. This very excellent RISKS mailing list has been going since
1989 or 1990 and has its own very dedicated membership etc.

We have been on the go since mid-June 1992, which means we are in our 30th year
of continuous operation. This is a hugely impressive thing in and of itself.
I have almost everything that has been posted on the list during that time, and
everything from January 1993, when I first joined myself. At least half the
people on this list have been on it for over 25 years or more. We are not
unlike RISKS in many ways but it's how we deal with it, will decide whether we
continue as we are or not.

The new WhatsApp group is great - which I'm trying to archive too - but it
should never replace this mailing list. Saying all that, the mailing list is
only as good as the people who contribute to it, which really is just two or
three people on a consistent basis. Dave N. and Rich W. are keeping it fed
almost single-handedly with their regular and consistently insightful &
high-quality match reports. The more people who contribute to the list, the
healthier it will be.

I do see a few problems with the current Leedslist mailing list, one is the
fact that it is text-based when time & tide have moved towards a more
web-centric world (see below), another is the unknowing but very annoying habit
of some posters to reply to (digest) posts including the entire contents of the
(digest) posts they are replying to. There is little or nothing that the
mailing list administrators [John Betty and myself] can do about that latter
annoyance. It has turned a few people off the list but we don't want to go
down the road of moderating all contributions etc.

Remember, when the mailing list was first set up it was at a
different-almost-pre-web time when many of us were not able to go to games, nor
to look at them live on telly. The latter is pretty much no longer the case.
There are many other e-forums for fans to contribute to than before too:
Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WACCOE-like forums, personal blogs etc. We live
in an increasingly segmented world where we can consume our media in almost
unique ways, this e-mailing list still being an almost-communal experience.

We live in a much more "immediate" world than ever before too, which suits the
WhatsApp model, while many of us are more reflective, which suits the e-mailing
list model. However, for the list to survive, the quantity, but especially the
quality, of the contributions must stay high, otherwise, we will continue to
die very slowly.

Who else is willing to man that gap of keeping the signal-to-noise ratio high?
Let's be having ya, Kevin Lewis and your always-excellent musings, or anything
else that comes into that weird and wonderful mind of yours, KofT!

James.

I look forward to the reports from Rich, Dave and others after every match.
Long may they continue.

As for the team. As much as I like Liam "Beckanbauer" Cooper and Luke "Roberto
Carlos" Ayling they clearly aren't going to take us where we want to go. The
sooner we can cut back on their number of first team appearances the better.
They will remain legends for getting us back to the Premier League and for that

I believe the pitch caused the first goal. Harrison slipped making a cross

Maybe I am in a minority but I think the first is Phillip's fault. You don't
point at another player to take responsibility as he did to Cooper. It was his
player who scored.

Dear All,

Earlier this week we heard of the sad death of one of the earliest members and
most loved characters from the list, David “DRB” Brennan.
Not only was DRB a list regular in the 90s as a trawl through the archives held
by James Lundon proved but he also wrote a lot of good stuff.

As a season ticket-holder he used to go to reserve matches at The Shay and (as
well as Maggie Barber) post regular reports of the reserves’
progress. He was a regular source of ticket information and became very
friendly with Mandy in the ticket office especially when trying to find out
what times cup matches would be played and what the ticket allocations would be.

DRB and his wife Kate were part of a gang that regularly met pre-match (he was
an Adolphi regular), he was at the MOALM and he was the man behind the
sponsored head shave at the first Euronet in 1996.

Like others on the list he was a Northern Soul boy, coming from Horsforth what
else would he be?

One of the friendliest, funniest and kindest blokes I have had the pleasure to
meet he will always be the example I would use of what the list is about.

DRB leaves behind, Kate and the two boys Sid and Bradley and we have been in
touch to send our sympathy. No date has been set for what will be a very small
family funeral but his brother-in-law suggests there might be a memorial
service in the future. The family has asked, if anyone wishes to, that
donations are made to MIND which is a charity DRB supported.

We checked with the family before we posted anything to the list and they were
happy for us to do this. As we get more information, we will pass this on but
in the meantime please enjoy the following post to the list from 1996, it’s
typical of the DRB we knew and loved (that and the bloody song he wrote about
Tomas Brolin!)

RIP DRB.

Subj:LU: Interview

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, as your team selection for some games over the past
few months has been, shall we say, "innovative" what will be your policy for
the Port Vale game?

HW: Well, all things considered, and bearing in mind that our players have had
a hectic autograph signing session recently, and it will be a bit chilly, I
think 11 players will suffice.

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, does this mean that even though your African players
are back from international duty, you will not use them?

HW: All things being equal, Tony, Phil and Lucas are definitely players, and
players want to play, want to play, but there can only be so many players, who
play, so they may play a part in playing but it's not so warm for players who
normally play, normally play, in a warmer climate.

Interviewer: It was suggested that in the Aston Villa game, you may have been
better playing an attacking side, as the defence, containing so many
youngsters, was unlikely to keep Villa out, offence being the best sort of
defence.

HW: Youngsters, youngsters. I was young once, and wanted to play, wanted to
play. You've got to give them a goal, I mean go, they may be short of pace,
but Rob Bowman has got the same name as the Producer of the X Files, so who
knows what might happen, might happen. I picked the best side for the game,
for the game. When I start telling you where to use a metaphor instead of a
simile, and when to employ onomatopoeic licence, then you can tell me how to
pick and quarter of pick and mix, I mean a football team.

Interviewer: There has been much discussion about Tomas Brolin's future at
Elland Road. Can you enlighten us as to the current situation?

HW: Tomas has got a white shirt, some people might say, might say, it still has
Parmalat on it, but I say Thistle Hotels. I know the shirts are the same
colour, and that was a major consideration in buying Tommy. I like continuity,
like buying players from Sheffield, so buying a player who was used to wearing
the same colour shirt fitted in well with our long-term plans. Brolly is happy
wearing white and yellow trimmed with blue and if Brollywolly is happy, I'm
happy, I'm happy.

Interviewer: But Mr Wilkinson, Tomas Brolin is a world class player, do you
think there will be a place for him in tomorrow's cup game against Port Vale?

HW: This could well be a bit of a clash, what with the colour of their shirts
against the blue seats of Elland Road, I might find it difficult to follow
their play, especially if I forget to take my yellow tinted motorway night
driving glasses off, glasses off. Port Vale are a big side, strong. We need a
team who can cope with this. They will throw everything

nothing but celebratory, of course, ever since the 7-0 demolition of
Fulham, but we were all nevertheless outraged by the news that the FA had
banned Kalvin Phillips for the rest of the season as his hairstyle brings
the game into disrepute. Most people around me were in general agreement,
but found the timing highly questionable.

As expected, Berardi came in for Phillips, but not as expected, he actually
occupied KP's berth, leaving White in his normal spot. I was a bit confused
about the Stoke lineup as they seemed to be playing with 12 men. I wondered
if the FA had granted all teams a special disposition to field an extra
player against Leeds because otherwise Bielsa's boys just overwhelm
everybody, but then a lad behind me told me that Martins Indi is actually
one player with two names, not two players.

Stoke pulled the pathetic, infuriating and inevitably backfiring stunt of
making us kick towards the Kop first half. This seemed to annoy the lads,
and they were snapping into tackles right from the off. Berardi was booked
after 4 mins for upending both Martins and Indi with one plough. Stoke were
under the cosh, but finally ventured upfield and even registered quite a
good shot from the edge of the box. Meslier was forced into the first real
save he's had to make as a Leeds player and tipped it round the post
competently. The 19 optimists in red-and-white scarves got all excited,
although what the point of their Harry Potter chant was I couldn't fathom.
You fools, I thought..and sure enough, someone managed to head the
ball away from around the penalty spot, Klich touched it to Costa who raced
away with the ball. He spotted Harrison sprinting up the right wing and
played it on to him. Harry took it on a bit, cut inside onto his left foot,
and slid a lovely ball into the box for an onrushing white shirt, who swept
it imperiously into the top corner.

To everyone's amazement, the wearer of that shirt turned out to
beBerardi!

We kept on dominating, pinging the ball about, switching positions, working
not just triangles but complete bloody dodecahedrons. One Stoke player had
to have a new top brought on because he had been dragged about so much that
the stripes on his shirt were all twisted.

Harrison hit the bar. The lad behind me reckoned that this was the 13th
match in a row that Harrison had hit the woodwork and was sure it was a
World Record.

Butland in the Stoke goal was, of course, having the game of his life.

But eventually, on about the half hour mark, the second came. We swung a
corner into the mixer, it pinged about a bit before falling to, yes Berardi
again, and he lashed a volley into the roof of the net.

Two minutes later, after another lovely move saw the ball switched back to
Pablo, he touched it on to Berardi, about 35 yards out. Shot, cried the
crowd, predictably. What was not predictable was that he did shoot, and it
bent into the top corner like Billy's famous goal at Hampden Park. 3-0! Get
in!

Two minutes later, Berardi again tried to separate Martins from Indi and
received his second yellow card. He tried to get the ref to give him the
match ball before departing, but the bastard in magenta refused.

So, a lot to talk over at halftime. I was surprised to see that everyone
was drinking corona beer. I asked one lad why, and he said he wasn't sure,
but it seemed that one person kind of got the bug to drink it, and then it
seemed to spread like, er...a virus? Weird times.

In the second half, our 10 men were still too good for the 12 of Stoke, but
with a crowded easter programme ahead, we sensibly elected to just knock
the ball about and cruise home without any major alarums.

Scores on the doors:

[LU] forest

2020-02-08 Thread Mark Pilling
Only the second game I've seen us deserve to lose. Preston were better
than us, I'm afraid we deserved it ourselves today, though credit to forest
for holding their form and taking their chance.

The big problem as we all know is our poor ability to score. Today, as
often, we are so unthreatening in their box. I accept that breakaways will
mean opposition have a much better liklihood to score which is countered by
the number of chances we create by being on the front foot and creating so
many more chances. And that's OK with me. I'd rather watch Leeds than
Forest - or anyone. (OK I'd always rather watch Leeds but you get my
meaning). It's why I love Bielsa and dream that he stayswhat/who could
ever be better?

Buton corners against us, we are so under pressure, but while we pummel
their crowded box, corners, crosses, through balls, cut backs...it almost
never looks like we're going to score. Today for prime example, we had
Cooper's header and what? a couple that fizzed past everyone.

Anyway, hopefully we can calm down and find our belief, we have still been
good enough to be 2nd. We play the best football of the League, we create
enough to compensate for our poor xG. We can still do it.

For me today

4. Casilla. I'd probably drop him. Teach him to be muscular in his box
without a Sergio Ramos to protect him. I do rate him as a shot stopper and
superb distributer. BUT

4 Alioski. Love him. But today it wasn't happening and then he lost his
head.

6. Ayling been disappointed with him lately but today, he looked better as
CB than he has at RBand at end of game, when everyone else was frantic
he at least kept cool and tried to play the game they know and trust.
dragged him up from a 5.

6. Cooper. One I think didn't do much wrong, and so nearly scored. But no
real reason to go beyond 6.

6. White. Same. Not much wrong, not much to rave about.

5. Dallas. Generous? I'd have subbed him at HT for Shacks. We were offering
nothing in MF.

5. Sad to give this to Pablo. Tried. But it didn't work.

6. Klich. Probably my motm. even though he didn't really do much.

5. Costa. Still doesn't offer anything substantial. Passenger.

6. Harrison. Worked hard. tried. only other motm opition. good touch and
presence. no final ball.

- Bamford. Hard to judge. No service. no contribution.

5 Roberts. Didn't provide anything.

- Kev no idea.

- Shack disappointed with his few touches, but too late to expect anything.

7 Ref. Thought he had a decent game.

Nowhere near the end. If we play like we can (and score) we can still run
away with the league - whatever the result against Brentford even. Just
hope the players continue to believe.

Quotes (?) Marcelois amazing, Plus, Ne=aeffy has my support fo r
consistent 'list pleasing' and general engagement of decades with the list

"What we have to do is describe how things are and accept supporters and
the press judge us how they think we have to be judged. Every time the team
doesn’t win there is something around the club, some feeling of doubt, lack
of confidence and we understand this, but we have to know if we deserve
this or not. Also it’s useful to analyse the argument supporters and press
say what they claim on the team. Fair things I am forced to analyse, to
analyse you need arguments. So when we listen or read the demanding about
claims for what we are doing, we try to confirm if what people in general
say is true or not. This is very important to say this clearly. To the
supporters we are forced to give them, not to demand something. We have to
listen to them and not answer them. We are grateful with the supporters, we
listen and consider them. We respect what they say and after it’s the same
with the press on another level. We analyse if what you say is real or not.
If what you say is real, right, of course it’s a contribution for us. If
it’s not right or true it’s a mistake, we consider it.

Sense of proportion, the ridiculous statements of the OP ignored the facts.
This season is not the same as last, so many variables are different. The
first half of the season is a much better indication of this team than last
season. If we perform as well in the 2nd half as we did in the first we'll
almost certainly get promoted.

[LU] Goals

2020-01-14 Thread Mark
At this point Bielsa and co. need to acquire a scorer or two from somewhere. We
carry far too many players who have limited to non-existant scoring
capabilities, basically everyone but Bamford, Harrison and Hernandez. For a
team that has so much possession and has so many corners for Ayling, White,
Cooper, Dallas, Costa, Klich, Alioski, Douglas, etc to have contributed so few
goals is a crime. Watching their feeble efforts on goal is many times very
embarrassing.
It's a miracle what Bielsa has been able to accomplish with such a limited
bunch of average players but Leeds cannot afford another season that collapses
into itself.

Can you think of a manager that not only understands the 'Barca Way' but
could 100% make ALL their players better (inc LM)?

Phew!!

Hope to be shot down in flames for this (Marcelo is my Beautiful God).
...Fair enough that MB talks up PB to the media, but, does he seem to have
a blind spot re actually the ability to score goals? Last season it was
lamentations that ununstandably we need a ridiculous amount of chances and
that goals scoring cannot be trained/taught. This week he complained that
the problem rather than not scoring, is that we're conceding.
Isn't our profligacy a serious problem? Can't it be taught/trained (or
bought in)?

KOT. In my mind, I'd have swapped Ayling to get Pablo on, and put Dallas at
RB. Then probably Alioski for Costa switching the ever improving JH
across, and possibly Shack for Klick.

For once fingers crossed for the window.

[LU] Ah memories. 4-5 Liverpool

2019-12-29 Thread Mark Pilling
Yes, it took me back to that day - my last regular game at ER as I came to
live in the desert the next day - and some kind of retribution. John
Barnes gave an absolute masterclass, believe we were waving our hankies at
him by 4-0 to them at half time. Only remember us doing that before for
Bowles and maybe Beagrie? and Marsh?? But then we came back, and, why
retribution? We certainly felt that it should have been 6-5 as Chapman had
what seemed two perfectly good goals disallowed for alleged fouls on the
keeper (don't think it was Grobbelar?). Maybe in today's game they might
indeed be classed fouls on the keeper, but reviewing it then on TV I felt
certain they were just honest 50 50s .

thanks for the memories (and the 3 points and the fighting spirit) today.

spent a lot of the second half thinking "Bamford's contribution in this
game is not so significant that I hope we throw Eddie on early as I feel
he's the sniffer who'd be on the end of those cut backs, on the right side
of the defender when the crosses come in, who would bury those shots that
Paddy doesn't" when, on cue of Kiko's absolute worldie...I ate my
words.

& was just thinking while I'm loving he football we're playing, and loving
Marcelo as our leader more and more every day, I'm missing his beautiful
humanitarian philosophies now the pundits are talking just talking the game
with himso, this, rather mild, snippet pleased me

"In my humble opinion, the most important is to try to make the supporters
value play and not just the result. To why the result happens, the
supporters have to be patient. This patience you need to wait for a result,
it’s stronger if the supporters love the play more than the result"

looking too far ahead, next season, it would be a lamentable disaster if we
weren't to be promoted and he were to walk. If we do finally return, would
he stay, would he value the play if we didn't get results, would the owners
be patient if he valued the play and didn't get results, would we value the
play for long without the results.

Re: [LU] Preston 1-1

2019-10-22 Thread Mark
I get injuries have forced these attackless, goal shy, can’t cross misfits to
play such as Ayling, Dallas and Berardi but it’s is so frustrating.
And Costa he isn’t worth a million let alone what we are on the hook for.
Despite the dross we are second. Amazing.

I’ve kind of given up

I don’t have a season ticket so can’t be a serial moaner

It will be what it’ll be

This season or never

As much as the manager has improved the players he inherited- and massively so
- we are utterly predictable

From literally picking the same team week in week out to picking it days before
- confidence, over confidence, whatever. I kind of get it but the team isn’t
really delivering

They seem tentative. Maybe we expect too much. I know I do. I just want to get
out of this league, not that getting promoted is the b all and end all - the
money is better

It is what it is, endlessly frustrating but such is life

Hm.
not one for demanding signing after signing, I was hoping, in this order, this

bielsa signed for another year.

(big gap)

a goals scoring striker
a central defender.

We have acquired 2 of the above (including the most important). but also lost
2 of the above.
yikes.

I had hoped that bielsa would/must be a pull for aspirational players/loanees,
but we don't seem to have taken advantage.

[LU] Pontus

2019-07-06 Thread Mark Pilling
Trust Marcelo more, but sad if true that Pontus is off.

Great character. Made a massive improvement to our defending corners, and
seemed more able than ten bob for'ead Cooper when attacking them. However,
last few games of the season, I felt he and Kiko were becoming a bit of a
liability, and, granted he turned up after Marcelo's last pre-season
started, he seemed vulnerable to being pressured on the break (quite common
under MB), and the least 'ball playing' of the defence.
I do fear that we'd be likely to severely miss his robust set piece
defending and what a shame if he's leaving under a cloud. We love(d) him
and he surely love(d) Leeds.

[LU] non lu var. Fwd: Rules taking over the game

2019-07-03 Thread Mark Pilling
totally agreedas I wrote to f365 last month:

Sad.

I fear we are becoming rule chasers, forgetting the game we used to love.
Really, did the 'handball' that gave Liverpool the Champions League deserve
to be punished with a goal? It was a maybe cross that touched his arm. Give
them a free kick if you have to give something.
And then, Lingard's boot was a centimetre ahead of the Dutch back line.
Gaining an advantage? Was he ahead of the defence? A few years ago, to get
a bit of the spirit of the game back, they talked about daylight between
the attacker and the defenders. Where was the spirit in calling tonight's
'goal' offside?

All for VAR and getting decisions right, but we should beware of letting
the rules overtake the game.

My first half:

Dominant, superior...except for the lack of shots

Phillips and Beradi rocks
we've seen the best and worst of Luke
if Viduka was half a yard short of pace, Klich is half a something short -
almost but not quite. Enjoyed his effort at Saiz passing in their box.
Pablo as engaged as ever, should we try swapping him and Shackleton? hope
we can get him a bit more space.
Scapegoats Dallas and Harrison doing decent.
Roofe's clever runs starting to be a nuisance - hope it's his shots next
half.

Ref - well, if i were Frank Fair Play Media Darling, my half time talk
would be, gently lower yourself to the floor if Leeds hit the back of the
net, or we're in dangerous free kick territory - and game's ours.

btw. Was it the same player that pulled Pablo back in front of the ref,
and then flew in two footed studs up on Luke...and got a gentle word??

[LU] English Managers Are the Fairest Players

Watching Villa West Brom and lovely to see Their teams are such sporting
rule following goody goodies.

Today Hourihane (not guilty of 2.48.1.4 "at least two matches for
assaulting (elbowing, punching, kicking etc.) an opponent or a person other
than a match official" sportingly plays and scores for Villa.

Grealish gets flattened in the box (despite no contact), Villa sportingly
accept the penaltyscored by

Abrahams who charmingly piles into a Baggie knocking him over in their area
and denying a chance to shoot, so sportingly feigns a head injury and avoid
punishment and penalty.

They then sportingly pressure the ref into sending Gayle off for
legitimately challenging for a 50/50 ball as the keeper sportingly writhes
in the phantom agony of his sock getting close to Gayle's boot. Man's
game, eh?

But truly sporting of DG to get a red card and 2 game ban in recognition of
his Bamford like rolling theatrics and fake head injury when his neck had
been stroked earlier in the game.

[LU] Question

2019-04-28 Thread Mark Pilling
What a season so far!

Adore Bielsa, what he's done with our mediocre bunch! The football we've
played. His philosophies, behaviour and manner.

Love the attitude of the players, willing to learn, to work, to will and
believe.

Love that I've been able to watch every game on my TV.

My question.why are we so 'inefficient' and how can we become more
efficient?

Is it the quality of the front men?
Or the service they are getting?
Are we too good? (so many teams just parking the bus)
Are we too predictable?
Don't we know how to unpick a packed defence?

[LU] Training with Bielsa

2019-01-24 Thread Mark Pilling
Haven't seen this posted/mentioned. thought it might interest:

https://www.socceriqeducation.com/bielsa-observations.html

Leeds were set to face QPR on Sunday at 2pm in the FA Cup, so in all
honestly I came into the visit not exactly too sure of what I was about to
experience. I naturally expected something resembling a generic pre-game
preparatory session, fine-tuning a few details before tomorrows game. But
as we reached the fields, I already knew this was going to be something a
little out of the ordinary. This is a Bielsa team after all.

Once we got down to the fields, 5 fields were prepped and ready to be put
to use, each one sprinkled with mannequins, and each one created for a
different purpose and area of the pitch. As the players headed out to the
field, the make-up of the squad consisted of around 13 first-team players,
8 u23 players, and 5 u18 players, with some players coming back from injury
on another small field for a total of around 29 players training that day.

Goalkeeper Coach Marcos Abad had a small area set up behind us to begin
work with Bailey-Peacock Farrell and Will Huffer, and his themes for the
session focused around tipping high balls, near-post angles from cut-back
crosses, and reacting to make double saves inside 10-12 yards.

On what seemed to be the main field, there were 6 mannequins set up in the
attacking third. Midfielders Lewis Baker, Adam Forshaw, and Tyler Roberts
left the core group (who went to warm-up on another empty field) and
immediately began working with Assistant Coach Diego Flores on some
triangulating movement patterns & combination play. This was fairly intense
and included lots of repetition and sharp movement over 15 yard spaces.

Carlos Corberan (Leeds United’s First team Coach and Head Coach of the
u23’s) took 5-6 players over to one field, where he worked them through a
very specified passing pattern to replicate playing out of pressure and
manipulating the opponents shape to exploit spaces in wide areas. This went
on for roughly 15 minutes, and the pattern was obsessively replicated, with
extremely fine details touched on by Corberan in terms of angles of
reception to the ball, and disguises in body shape when looking to play
into the next zone.

On another field adjacent, a few other Assistant Coaches worked with a
small group of 5 u18 / u23 players. Again, there were mannequins set up in
a specific shape, and this group were focusing on building out from the
Goalkeeper into the middle third in high intensity bursts. The phase of
play itself lasted no more than 10 seconds, but the pattern was repetitive
and diligent. Players had cues of exactly when to move into targeted
pockets of space either in front of, or behind certain colored mannequins.
Everyone knew their part within the pattern, and the detail was intriguing
to watch.

After the 15 minute warm-up via some passing patterns and agility, the core
group of players headed onto the main field to begin the main chunk of the
session. By this point, The equipment staff and Assistant Coaching staff
had set up an opposition formation (via mannequins) in the attacking half
of the field. I had an idea this was going to be some focus on team shape
in transitions, and sure enough it was. This was probably my most
intriguing part of the day, as the attention to detail was astounding.
iPads with numerous members of the coaching staff, filled with specific
visual movements for each player to observe and then produce when it was
time to execute certain shifts in shape.

The shifts in shape were short bursts, yet quick and inventive. I’d like to
say I fully understood the tactical transitions completely but I didn’t, as
they happened so quick and there were 4 or 5 varied patterns in which each
player knew their exact next move. You’d hear a number called out loud by a
staff member, and out of nowhere the #2 was suddenly on a full sprint into
the #8 position, while the #9 would turn into the #11 and the #11 would
become the #10 as the #10 became the #9 (for example). All this happening
within about 5 seconds.

It is also worth noting how fascinating it was to see the staff to player
ratio in the ongoing sessions. As I looked around the numerous fields in
use, there must have been a 1-to-3 ratio in every capacity at any moment.
The players had plenty of observant eyes on them, but also plenty of
willing coaches ready to help and tweak any glitches in preparation that
may arise during the session. No stones were left unturned, and it was also
quite surprising to me how often the staff would stop exercises and bring
the group in to watch more iPad footage or to to get some tactical points
across. For many of us, a very contrasting notion in comparison to the new
way we are taught to coach in terms of “let the players play”.

Nevertheless, as much as I would love to share the actual session diagrams
with everyone, and the meticulous approach to pattern play in which Bielsa
is renowned for, I unfortunately

[LU] How good is BPF?

2018-12-29 Thread Mark Pilling
Somewhat tongue in cheek subject there, but.

Was it Naeffy or irc Beerman Castlehouse who mentioned:

"top of the league, playing with a makeshift defence and still 2nd
lowest goals conceded."

I've been increasingly impressed watching Baily. Especially, when he
has the ball, the intelligent confident use he is making of it,
fitting our current style and build up. He also has a presence in the
box that many previous have lacked only very occasionally getting
caught out, only real criticism is letting in one or two distance
shots/free kicks that all the commentators cliche "He will be
disappointed/should have got that". (I'm no keeper, but know the goals
are big when you stand in them - and he has made some great saves
too).

He seems to have grown in stature/maturity. And, I was not sure what
they meant by the importance of keepers ability to use the ball, but
watching BPF, i think I get what they're on about.

Certainly impresses me more that Carson ever did.

My tuppennies.

"When a new player comes he doesn’t have the same advantage as the ones who

For the second part of the season, . Apart from the situation where the
team needs someone, the possibility of having a player is clear, we won’t
buy anyone.

I prefer instead of buying to improve the quality of the work because the
team usually reflects the quality of the players’ individualities, but it’s
also linked to the training they receive and you also can improve a team
when you improve the equipment."

[LU] Just wondering

2018-11-13 Thread Mark Pilling
you know I love Marcelo. And no O'Leary, Blackwell et al dodging
responsibility either, taking it full on the chin. Not BPF, Not Dallas,
Not the players. All my fault. Nice.

He said the aim was not to concede the ball in our half, where it would
hurt us. But that's what happened.

Is it just that our defenders are not up to passing it to each other when
under pressure? Had Marcelo told them, instead of playing the high tempo
game, to take it nice and easy and careful and not lose possession. Which
they tried, and failed?

And wasn't that what seemed to be happening when Mr
I-was-at-Barcelona-with-Johann-Cruyff-and-Total-football's team got found
out by Millwall and then everyone? Christensen seemed to want them to build
up patiently from the back, which i thought proved his undoing.

This time, though I'm sure Bielsa will have figured out ways to overcome
this.

I still think, we have a team of average championship players, but a coach
of real quality who is proving that just 'buying players' is not the
answer, better to improve what you've got individually and collectively.
And we have a chance. fingers crossed. MOT

6 Alioski flawed but i like those crosses

[LU] brentford seen from the rose tinted desert

2018-10-06 Thread Mark Pilling
Hmm. Not dismayed by today's game. I thought Brentford were
impressive and it reminded me that Bielsa has inherited a bunch of regular
(mid-table) players, whom he is shaping into the proverbial silk purse*
through his brand of motivation, inspiration, hard work, confidence,
reputation, player-management and no excuses coaching. We just about held
our own in the face of clever and skillful opposition.
since we seem to be slagging the players off, I'll try to be a bit more
generous.

BFP. 7. Confident and commanding if not always perfect. Nice.
Ayling 5 or less. Not a great day, though it can happen to all of us and
he's been great for us. Interesting to see whether we improve during his
ban.
Pontus. 7 just. Goal, passion, some quality defending but got mugged/made
obvious fouls once or twice too.
Cooper. 6. just. have been impressed this season but shades of
chiristenson-day panic trying to stroll out the back under pressure
Dallas. 6 just. not the worst replacement we could've had.
Alioski 7. 6 as a winger, but 8 at left back.
Harrison. 6.5. Has to find a bit more end product.
Saiz. almost 6. his presence has an effect, but his play didn't really
produce much. Not sure how much blame can be laid at his door. They marked
him out and we failed either to release him, or use the freedom that
allowed us elsewhere.
Klich almost 7. looked imperial at the off, but dwindled all the way to
getting subbed off.
Phillips just a 6. couldn't stop their 3 on his own. didn't look like it
either really. Unlucky not to score.
Roberts. 7+ looking stronger - both mentally and physically, popped up in
useful positions, made somethings happen.
Forshaw. disappointingly didn't see anything to get excited about but no
eal issues either.
Clarke. Nice positive cameo from the youngster.
Baker. A couple of close things.
Ref. o dear. wanting to prove (to himself?) that he isn't going to be
swayed by the crowd shows he doesn't have the necessary confidence to ref
games at this level. yet.
Marcelo 10. A delight.

You can’t base everything on stats, but for what it’s worth our stats show that
our pass accuracy over the past several years is pretty stable at around 74%.
Our average in the first two games was 73.6%, so basically the same. No stats
for last night, but I suspect it would be slightly less, if anything.

For comparison, the better Premier League teams generally run well into the
80’s. I suspect that Bielsa will want us to at least improve on previous
seasons.

Didn't see yesterday's game much but from the first two games I thought our
passing has been excellent. Way ahead of previous years.

Yep - pretty much totally agree.

I thought we looked fairly good in the first half, though without quite as much

and I commented that it was much more like watching us last season. It was a
pretty even 2nd half and could have easily ended in penalties.

Apart from the lower energy of the B-team, the biggest problem this season is
passing. We got away with the passes to the opposition in the first two games
because we hustled so much to get the ball back. But last night the passing
was even worse and the hustle wasn't enough to balance it out.

Subject: [LU] Bolton - a few thoughts

Interesting game. We made 8 changes so big chance for the B-team. We started
like we have done in all the games and for 35 minutes I thought we looked good
with Pearce and Shackleton doing well as wing backs.
But then I thought we ran out of steam and maybe that's the difference in
fitness levels and skills between the B-Team and the first 11 ? I thought we
returned to some of the aimless square and backward balls at the back that we
have seen under previous managers. The gap between defence and midfield got
wider and as a result we became less effective. Bolton then began to cause a
threat and in the end they could have got a result and you have to remember
they made 9 changes too !
So in the end I was happy with the result but it made me think that maybe some
of our squad players are not going to be able to support a promotion push this
season.
Blackman - 7. one bad spill which should have been a goal for them.
Shackleton - 7. I like the look of this lad. Ok, he lost possession a few times
and looked at times like he was struggling but you can see he's got quality.
Pearce - 6. He's a bit more pedestrian than Shackleton and definitely second
choice to Douglas this season. Did well coming forward at times.
Jansson - 7. Looked a tad rusy, few dodgy balls but second half showed his
strength and experience in a few one to ones. Certainly didn't do enough though
to convince the manager he should be playing instead of Cooper and Beradi and I
never thought I would say that.
Ayling - 8. The ever dependable Ayling.
Phillips - 8. To be fair, he looked the most comfortable and effective in his
role which is suiting him down to the ground.
Saiz - 8. I thought he was playing at 75% but still looked a class above and
scored a great goal.
Harrison - 7. Tricky little player and he covered some ground. I think he'll be
pushing Allioski for that left sided position soon.
Baker - 6. I thought he was a weak link. One or two good forward runs but not
as solid as Kiltch.
Bamford - 6. Scored a good goal and looks like he's got a nice left foot but he
should have had a hat-trick. Bit of a dilemma here because I think he needs
games but it looks like he'll be stuck on the bench for a while.
3 games, 3 wins so all good but I think there's a few concerns.

That's a very good point, if Japan had taken a short corner rather than tried
to get it in the box to score, time would have been up and they'd have had a
good a chance as Belgium in extra time or penalties. Belia has said that his

Yes full credit to Japan for taking the game to Belgium and not playing for a
draw (though this is what cost them the game, most underdog teams would have
tried to time waste that last corner kick) I thought they looked a real handful
and if they had a little more experience in how to see out games would have won

[LU] Next season

2018-05-07 Thread Mark
What about this Darren Moore fella at WBA? Surely he can motivate players to
succeed more than Heckingbottom?

I would agree with most everyone else regarding the players I'd dump this
off-season. And this is my list:

Pennington, Lonegan, Felix, Roofe, Berardi, Dallas, Sacko, Cibicki and Saiz
because I think he lacks the bottle to fight and win plus sadly Alioski,
because no matter how much I want him to succeed he never seems to deliver
anything game in and game out.

And if Cooper, Lasogga or O'Kane ever pull on a Leeds shirt for a meaningful
game then I'm done. Complete wank all of them.

[LU] What a dumb move putting SS on for the last few minutes at Newport!!

2018-01-09 Thread Mark Pilling
enjoyed the game at Sunderland earlier in the season but a bit concerned
how easily our offensive boys were brushed aside and knocked off the ball.
Watching the season unfurl on tv, this is a remaining issue, with the newer
europeans keener to wave arms in the air and imaginery cards than chase
back - or even learn to stand up for themselves. Good old English refs
don't like it and seem to allow good old english defenders the benefit of
the doubt. Now I've also been watching our little magician, Sami, getting
a bit of the georgie best, diego maradona treatment from players he's
running rings round with his tricks and turns: endless tugs, pushes, nudges
and kicks and yet he prefers to hang on to the ball, he's about beating
them and looking for a pass (though too often there's no pass on) or making
space for the shot, only finally does he generally lose the ball and end up
in a frequent ball of frustration...frustration at losing the ball, at lack
of options from his team, from too many defenders and too little protection
from the refs. And this worries me. If I were he, maybe I would be pining
for a land where he'd get the fair share of free kicks he warrants. So,
dear Santa, for New Year I want SS to fall in love with us as much as PJ
and stay, I want the refs to be more understanding of him and for his
team-mates to rise their game for him. (And I want Alioski teaching how to
stand strong to a challenge - would have wished the same for Pierre too,
but can't be bothered with him anymore.)

We all know we are not good enough to win 5,6,7 on the trot but it is bad
losing to a team with as poor a recent record as Birmingham - bad team

We now must beat Forest and then it is over to Orta etc to bring in the bit of

While I appreciate a striker who makes a pest of himself and unnerves defenders
there certainly needs to be some other footballing aspects he can offer. Roofe
is very, very limited and the sooner he falls down the pecking order the better.

And I don't care what the opposing player did, nor that the assistant ref and
ref didn't see the throat throw, when you use your arms to tackle an opposing
player to the ground in the penalty box with a rugby style tackle you're an
idiot and not thinking about the team or the resulting outcome. Ayling was a

The problem is that the ball spends too much time in our half. Whether it's us
passing it around or the opponent attacking it simply means the odds of

Find ways to keep the ball on the opponents side. Lasogga, Roofe, Sachko and

pass to a team mate. Surrendering possession and bringing play back to our side
of the pitch. It drives me crazy

I don't think Derby were half as good as Sheffield Utd but the way their one

I thought we did fine first half and even though they had some pressure second
they were nowhere near as good as Sheffield Utd. Very long ball. Penalty was
an absolute gift and we really should have had one first half. Would move them
all 10-15 yards up the pitch so there is more pressure on the other team, less
on our defence and players are closer together for the skill players to play
together.

Radio Leeds having a real go at Lasogga. I thought he played well and 5 goals
in 8 or 9 games is Wood ratio. But he was untouchable.

Have to say that 4-5-1 at home is playing the same team and expecting a
different result. Something Thomas appears good at.

I'd give Roofe a go up top like you, but it leaves our most creative player out.

How's about:

Lonergan

Pennington Jansson Shaghnessy
Ayling Dallas/Alioski
O'kane Viera
  Saiz
Roofe Lasogga

[LU] weds

2017-10-01 Thread Mark Pilling
fwiw

I was impressed with the starta great response to the Cardiff game. we
were lively, first to the ball, saiz was making things happen and inspiring our
lads to make runswe could/should have had 3 already before they scored.

but. wiedwald had already partied a shot he should ve saved and then some poor
marking, uncommanding keeping 1-0 and the game changed.

seemed we d been full of thoughts of 2nd place, just 1 behind Cardiff, when
suddenly, the unthinkable, we might lose we might have to fight for a point
even and they went mad. lost all form and composure and it was game over.

our players lost the plot, weds seized on it, surrounded our only remaining
weapon saiz, and went for it.

the defense were awry, the centre got worse and worse, the wings ceased to
exist and the keeping was shocking.

to be fair, I thought Felix, who I have not yet rated as a keeper, did ok for
most of the second half. but it was too late by then.

this team has shown it can playJust now needs to find how to do that when
the going gets tough. relatively optimistic.

[LU] before penalities

2017-09-19 Thread Mark Pilling
well done leeds

interesting to see a few new and old players get a decent run out

Lonergn 7 good physical presence
Beradi 5.5 solid but no excuse for the penalty - cost us a normal time win
Ayling 7 captains performance
Shaugnassey 8 motm wow. out of position a couple of times, but great
reading, anticpation and decisions, a new Woodgate?
BC or CB. 3. yes. that bad.
Dallas 7.5 solid game, extra half for his attitude in defence
Klich 5.5 first 5 mins I thought we'd unearthed a real gem. but then he
disappeared.
Viera 5 bypassed or passed back until late in the game when he started to
come into it. but his one minute madness cost us the game
Roofe 6 busy but lightweight
Grot 6 busy but heavyweight
Cbicki 5 anonymous except for the end of the first half and in the second.
may have some class but well hidden tonight
Sako 7.5 wow game changer when he came on.
Hernadez 7.5 luxury like cbicki, but made things happen
awesome subs
lasogga 5 i wanted to give him more. didn't really do anything wrong but he
didnt really do anything

Away unfortunately

I watched the Blackburn v Burnley game to see how Antonsson and Wood got on.
Antonsson lightweight and anonymous, whilst Wood missed 3 decent chances.
£15mill for him is bloody good business. I bet Burnley fans have the hump with
him already!

Wow, hard to believe it's 25 years (July 1992) that this electronic mailing
list has been on the go, in many different guises over that time too.
Hat tip to Mark Smith and Gavin Burnage for setting it up in the first place
from suggestions made on rec.sport.soccer! See here for the earliest reference
I was able to find to the list there from a five minute search this minute.
Can someone find the original notice to confirm my July 1992 date?
James Lundon (Galway White and on the list since January 1993).
P.S. Yes, I still archive the list in total and, yes, I still haven't gotten
around to putting all these archives together in one place i.e. CD/DVD :-(.
P.P.S. Long live vax.ox.ac.uk!

The litigation team are presumably lawyers and probably understand the possible
outcome of them passing sensitive legal and commercial info to the kind of
bloke who talks about it down the pub.
I’m intrigued as to what makes you even entertain the vague possibility of him
telling the truth……. Oh hang on, we’re Leeds United so literally anything could
happen ;)
