Re: [LU] 2 1 victory

2014-07-30 Thread Kevin Lewis (UK SBS)
As I work in Swindon, I though it might be nice to toddle along and see what
the team looked like.

The game itself was played as a typical friendly. Teams trying to knock the
ball about, no blood and thunder. Leeds dominated the first half, and had 4
real chances. Apart from the goal which was well worked by Byram, Bianchi &
Doukara to give Morison an easy knock in. Doukara and Pearce both hit the
post, and Doukara dithered when presented with a chance from 6 yards, allowing
a half block. Swindon scored from their only real opportunity after poor
defending from a corner.

The 2nd half saw Doukara brought down by the Swindon keeper, and Austin score
emphatically from the spot. After that Swindon dominated possession.
Difficult to know how much was them playing OK, and how much was Leeds sitting
back. The Swindon fans I know said it is typical of Swindon to keep
possession, and not do a lot with it. Their only real chance came late on when
a deflected shot fell to someone coming in from their right. Instead of going
straight for goal, he tried to bring it down and end up chesting it back to
Taylor. Leeds couldn't have complained if Swindon had equalised, but were
probably worth a win on the basis of the first half

As for the team. No scores - just impressions.
Well it was 4-1-4-1 again with Morison wide on the left and Doukara up front.
Byram and Bianchi worked well down the right, but that threat subsided in the
2nd half when Gerardi came on for Byram. Gerardi did very little wrong, but
had no threat going forward.

Peace looked good defensively, and Wooton looked good on the ball, but not
quite so good as a pure defender. Warnock was just Warnock. Austin protected
the back 4 OK, but lost the ball too often and nobody seemed to cover for him
when he went forward. Murphy was tidy without being dominant, Tonge was OK in
the first half, but can't get forward quick enough to help out a lone forward.
Morison put in the proverbial shift, gave Doukara some sort of help in the box
and scored a goal. Although reasonably quick for a Centre Forward, for a
winger he is a bit pedestrian. If they are going to play 4-1-4-1 Doukara looks
to be the best option. He is quick, shows well and has good control. If he
scores a couple early in the season - who knows.

Apart from Doukara, the team lacks pace in every department, but the starting
11 last night could well be 1st choice at the start of the season. The squad
at least needs a proper winger, and it would be interesting to see what Bianchi
could do playing more central instead of Tonge.

2014-07-30 Thread Brendan McWilliams
I'm only moderately concerned:

- with the exception of McCormack we've kept the "good" players and binned out
the dross entirely (except maybe Kenny & Warnock and i too hold some belief
that Morison may come good)

 - if we have a bad start it'll be short, Cellino will simply boot him out
after 3 or 4 games.

On a different note, is Twitter killing this list?

Did any of the players have any socks left after last night, if so they
obviously didn't put in a decent shift.

By heck we could get good at these post game comments by season end.

by the way it could be worse, we could be like West Ham. I went to Wellington
and watched them and the Barcodes play A league opposition on Saturday. West
Ham lost to both the Wellington Phoenix and Sydney FC, and were bloody awful
against Sydney. They are I suspect in for a very long season. However it could
be that when MC disposes of the Hock he can get Big Sam. I suspect he won't be
at West Ham much longer.

cheers
