[LU] Non-LU : Wigan

2013-05-15 Thread Alan Edgar

> Bet they'd happily relinquish the Cup to avoid relegation.

I wouldn't, if I were in their shoes, and here's why.

They are in the history books for ever as winners of the FA Cup (a trophy the
mighty LUFC have also won precisely ... once) having beaten the stinking rich
reigning Prem Champs with an injury time winner - it won't get any better than
that for a club of their stature.

So what if they got relegated ?

They might be back next year - Hull haven't taken long to return.

Sure, they might never get back, but then again if they'd stayed up this year
then they'd only be favourites to go down next year, especially as Martinez is
almost certain to leave (and would have done so even if they'd stayed up as he
has to move onwards and upwards career wise now).

They've earned (not been given, like Stoke 2 years ago) a place in Europe for
the first time, and even if they don't last long, they will enjoy the ride.

Instead of carping at them because they get smaller crowds than us, we should
be looking to emulate them, both in the over-achievement of 8 years of Prem
football (while we've scratched our ar$e in League 1 and the Championship) and
the style of football they play.

Totally agree. Football is totally messed up if you'd take Premiership
survival over winning the FA cup.

Success for a PL club is defined by finishing in the top 4? What the hell
is that about? In 20 years time, will people look back at Everton's 'Moyes
glory days' of finishing in the top half of the table consistently on a
small budget? Will they f*ck? They will see that Scum won the league god
knows how many times.

Exactly.

Or define success as being 17th out of 20 every year, which is unfortunately
the limit of the ambitions of half the Premiership these days.

2013-05-15 Thread John Lee
Much I can agree with there Al. Our last 8 years have been pitiful in
comparison. Some realism needs to come into the expectations of all Leeds fans
- should we go up in the next couple of years, we would need an enormous cash
injection to get into the top third of the Prem. Premier League this year has
been weak, so if that continues we stand a chance of re-establishing ourselves,
but the odds are stacked against us, unless we have a junior team with Batty,
Speed, Strachan and MacAllister, and they've all been time-warped back to 16
years old :-)

How we only ever won 1 FA Cup is beyond me??

Re: [LU] Non-LU : Wigan

2013-05-15 Thread Alan Edgar
Shows you how hard it is to win the Cup when a team finishing in the top 2 7
years out of 10 (65-74) only wins it once, and the team who has dominated the
current decade hasn't won it since 2004.

Such 2nd division luminaries as Sunderland, Southampton and West Ham have all
won it since we have, as have so-called small clubs like Wimbledon, Coventry,
Portsmouth and now Wigan.

While I can understand Wenger ranking CL qualification above the League Cup,
surely after 8 years without a pot he needs some sort of trophy to define the
Emirates half of his tenure.

[LU] NON LU: Wigan Make History?

2013-05-14 Thread Sutton / Smail
I've often wandered if an FA Cup winning team managed to be relegated from
the Premiership / Top Flight in the same season
Shoot me down if I'm wrong, but it could be that Wigan (currently losing
4-1 to Arsenal) may be the first club to do this. Perhaps this is why they
were deciding whether or not to parade the FA Cup.

Bet they'd happily relinquish the Cup to avoid relegation.

They are the first to win the FA Cup and get relegated in the same season.
Quite a few clubs have been losing finalists and got relegated in the same
season, but Wigan are the first to actually win it and go down.

First to win FA Cup and be relegated in the same year…yes. But, as I recall,
Boro was a losing finalist in both cups the year they were relegated and went
on to play in Europe out of the Championship the following season…and came
right back up.

I wonder, though, where Martinez will go. Had they stayed up I'd think he'd
have been headed back to Spain and a high profile job ('praps even Barca). Not
so sure now.
