Featured this week:

WHY MORE AUSTRALIANS ARE GETTING POORER

Poverty is spreading, despite a "booming" economy. With unemployment
still high, the cutting back of welfare rights leaves a growing
number of working people with nothing to fall back on when they

LL:DDV: Heroin Reform rally

1999-08-24 Thread toni bloodworth

On Saturday 28 August 1999 at 1.00PM at St. Paul's Cathedral (corner of
Flinders & Swanston Sts City, the Community Campaign for Heroin Reform
(CCHR) will hold a mass rally and then march on Parliament to hold an
extended vigil there to mourn the preventable and senseless deaths of over
190 Victorians to heroin this year.

At the moment, heroin is one of the main issues on the Australian political
agenda. So come to the rally / vigil on Saturday 28 August and lend your
voice to those already demanding the trial of safe injecting facilities in
Victoria.

LL:AA: FAX DOWNER, BRERETON, RE Y2K AND TAKING N-WEAPONS OFF ALERT

1999-08-24 Thread FoE Sydney - Nuclear Campaign

PLEASE DO THIS ONE UP TO SEPTEMBER 1, WHEN THE GLOBAL FAX CAMPAIGN KICKS IN

ACTION ALERT PLEASE FAX TO EVERYONE

FAX HOWARD, DOWNER, BEAZLEY, BRERETON

Dear People,

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution on nuclear weapons and Y2K, on
Thursday 12 Aug.

The resolution, as negotiated between the Dems, the ALP, and the
Government, represents real progress but it is not as good as we'd ideally
like.

But it is better passed than not passed, and it is simply fantastic that it
is being passed by both parties - ie unanimously.

Both the ALP (Breretons office) and the Government did not want to committ
themselves to implementing the 1996 reccomendations of the Canberra
Commission, that nuclear weapons be taken off hairtrigger alert - in spite
of the fact that a number of resolutions in the UN General Assembly
(including one the Senate called on the govt to support last year) have
called for the same thing.

DOWNER, BRERETON, HOWARD AND BEAZLEY NEED TO HEAR A MESSAGE FROM YOU.

THEY NEED TO BE ASKED IN THE STRONGEST OF TERMS TO SUPPORT THE CANBERRA
COMMISSION RECCOMMENDATIONS THAT NUCLEAR FORCES/WEAPON SYSTEMS BE TAKEN OFF
HAIRTRIGGER ALERT, AT LEAST OVER THE Y2K ROLLOVER PERIOD.

THEY NEED TO HEAR OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT ACCIDENTAL NUCLEAR WAR
IS A REAL IF SMALL POSSIBILITY IF THIS IS NOT DONE.

TELL THEM:
1)Congratulate them on having passed the resolution they just passed, and
on making it unanimous..
2)Urge that the government reconsider their current opposition to calling
on the weapons states to de- alert, and urge that the 1996 Canberra
Comissions strong reccommendation that strategic nuclear weapons be taken
off hairtrigger alert be adopted as government policy, and implemented
immediately.

3)Tell all of them that the threat of accidental nuclear war is entirely
real, that it has been warned of by the Federation of American Scientists,
by the British-American Security Information Council (BASIC) and by
military insider and analyst, Bruce Blair, who amongst his other
distinguished career highlights was for some two years a minuteman nuclear
missile launch control officer.

The fax numbers you need are:

John Howard, 02-6273-4100
Alexander Downer, 02-6273-4112
Laurie Brereton, 02-6277-8502,
Kim Beazley, 02-6277-8495.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Women in Regional Australia- Legal Needs and Access to Legal Services,
Albury-Wodonga, 2-3 days 2nd week of Nov. '99 Registration $350 or less

http://www.nwjc.org.au/regionalaustralia.htm

More than two million Australian women live outside metropolitan areas.
This conference would focus on diverse legal needs and service delivery
issues relating to women living in rural, regional and remote areas.

Reports by local and regional community organisations from many parts of
Australia highlight needs for legal services for women in their area,
including limited access to legal information, representation and essential
support services.

The conference will focus on diverse needs at a local and regional level
and aim to:

* draw out themes for local, state and federal government policy
development,
* build new networks and partnerships between researchers, community
workers, legal service providers and government agencies, and

* examine service delivery models and practical solutions.

The conference will provide an opportunity to showcase and debate
innovative legal information and legal service delivery models.

At this stage we are seeking YOUR VIEWS to help us determine the likely
level of interest in the conference and obtain input on the issues and
themes which should be addressed. A short questionnaire is attached for
return to the address given by 10 Sept. '99.
