Hi Jim,

I have a simple answer for this, the top rail should be at the height of
"Your" belly button.  It's easy to view your work, and your arm does not
have much fatigue in the handle positions.

Re: Legacy Video series.

2017-03-05 Thread Kevin Miller

I just bought my 1000exl and here are the VHS tapes I received:

Basic Designs Instructional Video
Advanced Designs Instructional Video
Contour Follower Techniques
Milling Hollow Spirals
Executive Gifts Project Video

Do you by any chance have these already converted to DVD or digital format?

I suspect that a portion of these tapes may be on YouTube, but the videos
uploaded on their channel don't seem to have the same title as any of these
tapes so I'm not sure.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello Kevin,As Curtis said, "Welcome".If you don't mind, will you share with The Group how you came by your Mill?  How'd you find it? (Since I don't think anyone in The Group found it for sale and posted it here.  We usually post LOMs we find for sale in our local areas - CraigsList posts, upcoming estate auctions, eBay, etc.)What "deal" did you get (cost and components/accessories that came with the purchase)?Like Curtis also recommended - chuck up scrap wood.  Save your money and good wood for when you become somewhat proficient with the mill.Have a Great day - and be SAFE.  Mac-Original Message-

Hi everyone.  I just purchased a 1000exl with the motorized x-axis (left/right is "x" right?).I'm very new to this and hoping to find some help.   I did get the videos that came with the machine but unfortunately, they are on VHS tape and I cannot view or convert them.    A local service can do it for me, but they want $20 per video and judging from the quality of the videos that are posted on the Legacy youtube channel (and suspecting that some of those are the same from these tapes), it's not worth it to spend $120 on converting these 6 tapes that I got. I was hoping that someone might have the equivalent videos already converted that I could download somewhere or that they could send me.  I can post a picture of the 6 original tapes to prove that I own them if that is an issue. My backstory is basically that I'm a life long wannabe woodworker and I've only been able to recently start.  I'm 51 years old and my main focus of interest is woodturning.   I've wanted a mill like this for some time to experiment with spiraling and other types of routed patterns on turned items.  I didn't expect to every find something like this - much less a 7 foot long one :-) - so I'm glad to get one and start seeing what it can do.Any info on the above mentioned video content would be appreciated.  It seems that Legacy wants $45 just to get the two DVD starter set and I'm not sure if those are the same videos I already have or if they are just a subset or what.   If anyone has any clue or knows where I can get them, I'd greatly appreciate hearing the info! Thanks to all.KevinCincinnati, OH

Hello again.
Kevin I would like to note, These video that Mike made are exactly why this
group was formed. Mike's methods are his own, Legacy dose not teach this way.
and you will not find Mikes methods anywhere but here. GREAT METHODS, made from
our group members. Share the wealth of information it the name of the game.

One more Note.
there is a slight learning curve to using the Legacy. Play a lot with your
machine before trying ... and use scrap wood, fire wood... Do Not spend any
real money for good wood before you, fully under stand how your machine will
handle.

Just my two cents worth.
Have a great day.

Re: Height of Mill

2017-03-05 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Hello and Good morning.
If I can put in my two cents worth here. I 1000ex. is also a table mounted
machine, I put my unit on a set of slides and my machine is mounted on the top
of my work bench, when not in use the machine is slid to the back of the bench,
and when I want to use it, I slide to the front. My machine is a bit higher
then most, basically due to the work bench's height. the top of my rails are 4'
off the ground. (I'm 5' 11") I find that I like watching the spindles turn with
out having to do a lot of bending. (my machine is with in my normal range of
vision standing straight up)
What I am getting at here is , Jim what ever height you make you r machine, it
will become yours. and no matter what height you make it,The machine has to be
conferrable for you to use it.
One more note, I have a bar stool in my shop, I like to sit on that stool and
watch my machine cut, .The bar stool is higher, so when I sit on it, my range
of vision is the same as when I stand.

Good luck on your stand. and Please let us know how it turns out for you. ;-)
