Last Chance: Woodchuck

2021-11-29 Thread Rick Waters
Hi everyone,
The time has finally come that the woodchuck has to go. It's taking up too
much room in the garage and I never actually used it. It's been sitting
there for about 3 to 5 years and it comes with everything you see in the
pictures. If anybody wants to come down to Naperville Illinois they can
have it for free. I will not be able to meet you anywhere with it, or truck
it across the country. And I'm just generally unwilling to ship it. But if
you want it it's yours.

Sadly, Selling my Woodchuck

2020-11-30 Thread Rick Waters
Dear LOM Members,
I've decided to sell my Woodchuck. It wasn't an easy decision. It just
has to be done. BTW, if anyone wants the giant fan in some of the
pictures, let me know.
If you want the Woodchuck, make me an offer (I'll probably take the first
offer from anyone that will come pick it up from my driveway. I live in
Naperville, IL, USA).
Here's a link to a Dropbox folder with pictures of what I'm including
(except for that router base in one of the pictures):
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/74wg2kigsu01og0/AABmhLV_BbnqmlwkaL91iKGfa?dl=0
Everything I have is in the pictures. I don't have any other gears or
parts. Base comes with it.

Short story:
I need the space in my garage.
I never used it. I REALLY meant to, but I need to be honest with myself -
I'll never get around to using it.

Long story:
I bought the Woodchuck so I could make pool cues for my sons. They have
never asked me to make anything for them, thought I've been a fine
woodworker and turner since 2007.
A couple of months after buying the machine (which was missing some key
parts), I was diagnosed with colon cancer.
My whole life was put on hold. I'd just achieved a HUGE career goal (sorta
like getting my PhD in my field), but I had to keep my crappy 9-5 job
because of the health insurance.
About a year later, after several surgeries and a long round of chemo, I
returned to woodworking and bought a crank handle from Mike Pung. I bought
a couple other missing parts too. Right about the time I was ready to get
to the Woodchuck in earnest, the cancer came back.
This time, the surgery turned into 4 surgeries (one was life-saving as the
first surgery nearly killed me). I spent part of last December, and ALL of
January 2020 in a hospital bed. I was 220lbs last December. In February
of this year, I was 175lbs and still losing weight, in a wheelchair, and
super depressed.
I rebounded slowly, and just got back to woodworking about 8 weeks ago -
just turning pens. I look at the Woodchuck every time I go into the
garage, and I know I won't be around long enough to put it to use.
I'm not pitying myself, and I am definitely not looking for pity. I know
that the machine will see a better new life with this community, rather
than going to any other forum.

Love you all,
Rick Waters

I actually wasn't advocating FOR the Laguna. I was more calling attention
to what is being made available to consumers, and the astronomical price.

Bat Master

2020-04-30 Thread Rick Waters
Laguna just came out with the Bat Master. CNC lathe that originally was
used to make bats, but can make anything long and round. Get ready for a
jaw-dropping price tag though ($29k USD).

Re: Round 3: Woodchuck for FREE

2019-08-28 Thread Rick Waters
They just need a copy of the paid invoice (which I have) and they need me
to tell them who is picking it up.
They said the deadline for picking it up was July 31st. They called me
this morning asking if I was going to take it. I said I'd have to find a
friend that really wanted it. They said to just let them know who and
when. Otherwise, they're going to throw it in a dumpster.

It sure would. You just need someone willing to go to the warehouse and
load it into the shipping container. That's my problem. If I was willing
to go there, I'd just pick it up and bring it home. Then I'd part it out
to the people on this list.

Round 3: Woodchuck for FREE

2019-08-28 Thread Rick Waters
Ok, I was able to get anyone to say yes to this a month ago. Let's see
now.

This Woodchuck is paid for already. All you have to do is go pick it up.
I'm no longer interested in it, so if you want it, it's yours.

It is located in York, PA.

Holy Smokes!

2019-02-10 Thread Rick Waters
OK, I'll admit, I've had the Woodchuck for about 6 weeks (maybe 2 months),
and I haven't really touched it since I got it. Mostly because I had an
unheated garage as a workshop, and Chicago temps have been prohibitively
cold lately.

I took 20 minutes this morning to take the crank handle Mike Pung sent me
(thanks Mike!) out and figure out how it goes on the machine. I had to
take off some giant washers, but figured it out.

Then I started taking a bunch of parts off that were rust frozen, oiled
them up and got some of the surface rust off so they could move freely (to
some extent).

Then I saw it... This machine is AWESOME! I'm still not sure about a lot
of things, but the possibilities are endless! I just wanted something to
make pool cues with, but this can do so much more!

Yeah, I've seen the braiding and twist videos, flute routing and all that.
But when you see how configurable this is up close, your mind runs wild!

If anyone has a Woodchuck manual, or even an extra one, I'd be interested
it copying it. The company I own is a professional training company, and I
make training manuals all the time. I can make PDFs out of anything. So
if you want, I can make professional manuals that are out of print... Just
an offer.

Thanks again to Mike Pung!

Re: L1200

2019-01-25 Thread Rick Waters
Brad,
I wish I could afford it (and that my wife would let me bring it home).

Hey, I hear you. I live in fierce determination that I will have no
regrets. I had stage 3 colon cancer last year. While going through chemo,
we found out my wife had stage 1 bladder cancer. While we were both going
through our own ordeals, my 7 year old daughter had a huge scare with
appendicitis. 2018 was a real bitch for us. While my wife and I know that
our cancers can come back and take us at any time, we are determined to
enjoy the heck out of life, and our kids.

That's kind of why I bought my Woodchuck. I told my older sons I'd find a
way to make them the custom pool cues they'd been asking for. And, as soon
as I get the feeling back in my fingers (chemotherapy can cause
nueropathy), I'm going to start turning again. And learning how to use the
Woodchuck.

There are better days ahead, sir.

Rick

Re: Live vs Dead Center

2019-01-20 Thread Rick Waters
A live center's head rides on a set of internal ball bearings, so it
rotates with the work, reducing friction.
A dead center has a fixed head, so it doesn't move with the work. It can
cause a lot of friction, and under high pressure can cause high pitched
squealing.
I've been turning for about 5 years, but still don't know when to use a
dead center, so I always use a live center. But, I only turn pens, so my
knowledge is limited. I just got the Woodchuck so I could turn pool cues.

Re: not a LOM question

2019-01-07 Thread Rick Waters
Plug cutters drill conic holes. A plug cutter would leave a jagged
bottom. The bits that Bill and Okla Mike showed have pointed tips, so
would leave a conic bottom. Your candle holder mortises have flat
bottoms. Maybe a conic shaped router/shaper bit could do this?

Re: New Members and Moderation

2018-12-04 Thread Rick Waters
Hi!
I'm a new member.
I've been a woodworker since 2006. I owned a couple of woodworking
podcasts for a while (SplinteredBoard, and The Sawdust Chronicles). I got
into turning about 6 years ago.
Earlier this year my older sons asked me to make them custom pool cues. I
spent a lot of time building several versions of rail systems over my lathe
(with a brand new bed extension) to hold a router. None of them safe
enough to actually use.
I recently saw a Craigslist post for a Legacy Wood Chuck, and I bought it.
I haven't taken delivery of it yet, because I need help moving it, and I
had to clear a space for it in my shop. It's missing a ton of gears that I
see most people have. So, I'll be looking for those online somewhere, I
guess.

Thanks for having me here!
Rick
