the Legacy is pretty straight forward. rough cut the bone to the shape you
want. and then pick your pitch you want to use, (for roping) and then find the
router bit, (profile of the cut you choose.)  since the  turnings that I am
making are appx. 4" long and 1/2"-3/4" round, the router bits I am using are
smaller bits (1/8"- 1/2" size and profile.) Bone is very hard, but is takes
details very well. just make sure that your router bit is sharp, before using.

Hello everyone, bone is a very neat material to work with. but it has a few
draw backs that need to be addressed before you start working with it.  First
the only part of the bone that is usable is the outer edges of the bone.  the
center/marrow is not usable for turning. I have also found that the
cartilage/knuckle/ joint is also un-suitable for turning. So the question arises
How do you use it?  Ive found two ways, (but there still may be more ways that
I do not know of...) the first way is to use the bone as it come naturally. and
try to make the bone round, as in a spindle. the problem is with this concept
is the bone is not uniformly dense through out the bone, so you may find thin
spots, where you can/could cut through the bone if not careful. (photo #1,2) So
what I have done is to use the bone in segments and glue them together to make
a solid turning. But again this runs into a few problems, Again do to the
un-uniformity of the bone its self.I have found two different way of handling
this problem. the first cut the bone into usable disks. which have to be faced
off on the lathe/legacy. and then latter I cam up with a home made barrow
trimmer.
[ Do to the file size I will stop here and continue in another posting.]

I am planing to buy some American Buffalo bone, and see if that is better then

So far the cow bone looks pretty nice (very much like Ivory) ,and cuts very
well on the Legacy, My only complaint is  the labor it takes to make something
usable form the bone its self. The process takes a lot of labor, even thought
the cutting of the bone only takes 30 min. or so to cut, this handle took me

I think they are awesome! I use one just likethe first one for my
drill press with 7" bolts, and a threadedknob so no tools are needed
for a strong clamp

Re: Has anyone used a LOM to mill aluminum???

2016-11-24 Thread parr454 via Legacy Ornamental Mills

I was thinking of mounting my drill press vice down to a table attached to the
lower rails with a piece of aluminum bar stock that I wanted to mill, lock the
x axis and use the y & z axis with a small 1/8" carbide end mill as sort of a
poor mans milling machine taking small cuts. I thought if those tiny table top
cnc machines could do it I could do it on the LOM but before I tried it I
thought I'd ask here first
I will take the advice and scrap that idea
Peter.

I have successfully used the legacy to mill aluminiumbut I defiantly would not
recommend it unless your an experienced metal machinist
I used a carbide end mill and ran the routerat its slowest speed I had a stop
at each end of the cut and had everythingvery heavily clamped and had all
leadcrews engaged and all movement and slop inthe machine reduced as much as
possible but most importantly only took 0.005thousands of an inch cuts at a
time and feed it by hand very very slowly themotor feed is way too aggressive .
But again I defiantly do not recommend it thelegacy mill is not designed for
the forces involved in milling metals
And the possibility of catastrophic failureand damage to your mill is very
high. And I take no responsibility at all ifyou attempt it.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Has anyone used their LOM to mill Aluminum using end mills ?
Me, not having a milling machine thinks it can be done using very lightcuts
I have a z axis with a DRO running a PC 7518. What do you think ?

Re: Balls

2016-09-30 Thread parr454 via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Here is a simple way to make your own stylus to exactly match any bit that you
have.
Clamp a block of hardwood to the table of your drill press.
Chuck up the bit that you want to use and slowly run it down into the wood the
full depth of the profile of the bit.
Back out the bit and replace it with a short piece of steel rod - 1/4 or 1/2"
to match the shank of your bit.
Lower the rod into the cavity that that you made with your bit and lock the
quill of your drill press
Pour melted lead- "wheel weights " into the cavity and let it harden
unlock the quill and back it out of the cavity -it will not stick
admire your matching stylus next to your bit.

The cutter is on the side nearest the leadscrew and therotation of

I can make the spindle turn the other way , which waywould you

befarther away from the radius path need to accomplish
the finish ball. You will need to make a smaller
template to be left with the correct diameter.

Lets say a 2" ball, a 1/2" bit and a3/4" follower. the
difference of the bit andfollower are 1/4" or 1/8" radius.
The radius of theball is 1" but to correct we need to make
it 7/8"radius in order to accommodate the larger radius.

the reverse is true if the followerwas only 1/4" in this
case you would have to add1/8" to the template to get the
cutting side of theblade to swing on a 1" radius.

Bottom line here is to draw it outand prove your path with
a compass.

So there wont be much left it goes through .
In 96 when we lost all our rights and a greatmany guns it was to reduce gun

Bill,
Surprised that you can even "talk" about guns & ammo Down Under.
If I remember correctly, you folks had your "Right to Keep and BearArms"
(RtKaBA) revoked by your government.
(The RtKaBA is what we have here in the USA. I know you don't have
ourConstitution - so whatever it was in your founding documents.)

Peter, I hope you (and all other Americans that appreciate ourConstitution/Bill
of Rights) are a member of the NRA. They are THE MOSTinfluential/powerful
"protector" of NOT ONLY the Second Amendment, but, by extension, ALL ofthem!

Loctite makes a product I have used that " freezes" it and then you
separate the two parts about two minutes later. I used it a few years
on some 40 yr old hvac pulleys where a puller would not work and I
slid it right off.

PLEASE post more pictures of it as I would like to make one for my 900

I don't know if it would be considered 3-D or not but it
could do gun stocks and duck decoys. Have a look at the video and see a
baseball bat training devise call a Pax Bat. I make these for the company
who sells them.
Carriage is driven by a gear motor and threaded drive shaft, stock
WoodCuck stuff. The main shafts and chains are driven by a separate gear
motor with it's own control. And yes for you noobs, that is a skill saw.

Re: Useful device

2013-10-31 Thread parr454

I too have been looking at DRO's because the upgraded Legacy z-axis I am
installing on my mod 900 came off a mod 1800 and was missing the DRO.

I am also installing the 1800 headstock with bearings and the leadscrew
supports with the bearings from the 1800 and the drive motor

From what I can tell, most of the Legacy z-axis came with the Shan mod 271-520
DRO priced at $40.00 plus shipping from www.allendesignsllc.com . At their
website they show detailed pictures of their horizontal and vertical units
mounted on a Legacy on all 3 axis's.

The other 2 companys that I have been looking at are Wixey and Igaging. Igaging
are the ones that Grizzly is selling.

All 3 companys have horizontal, vertical, and remote readout units that can be
used on the Legacy and for the cost of these units I think they will be very
useful and a must have for me.

I am considering getting the Wixey for my z-axis over the Shan unit that came
on the Legacy z-axis only because the Wixey unit has the option of fractional
readout and the Shan does not. The igaging units also have this option.

One day I hope to have one on all 3 axis's.

Peter

Roger,

I agree with your comment as regards Amazon. I made a poor selection of words
to convey my thought. The point I meant to make was that I'd pay more to get
the Wixey device versus buying the Grizzly unit. Like you, for me it's not all
about lowest price for an item. In this case I'd gladly pay more for the Wixey
because it has features I prefer (as I mentioned in first email) and right or
wrong, I feel Wixey will be of higher quality as well. I feel that Incremental
Tools will only sell products that meet a fairly high level for quality.
By the way, I took no "offense"(personal criticism) to your comments - rather
appreciated your reply.

Hi Mac
The Grissly unit looks very much like the type that used to be fitted to the
Legacy Z Axis, in fact it looks a dead ringer and that is going back 8 to 10
years.

The Wixey is obviously better quality, I have used a number of their items but
not these although one or two customers did use them on their router lifts with
varying degrees of success, hence the reason INCRA are selling them.

Just another observation and please do not take it as a personal criticism but
why do people look for the cheapest supplier, in this case Amazon, and then
wonder why the local and national dealers disappear from the market?

Regards
Euro Roger

PS I no longer have a business tie up with INCRA as I have retired, well semi
retired BUT I made sure I had all the INCRA products I needed before I retired.
Now I just sell Legacy and Magnate!

Thanks Max,
The real "plus" for the Wixey device is that the connecting wire is not "wired
in" to either the sensor or readout. Instead it uses a computer network wire
(replacement wire easily bought anywhere in various lengths) that plugs in to
the sensor & readout unit. I hate small wires "permanently" attached to a
device - you run the risk that they eventually fail, making device unusable. I
like the Amazon price for the Wixey unit.

Still have not heard from anyone that has used ANY of these devices. If you
have, here is your chance to contribute to a discussion

As I said in my first post, this was an experiment / proto type. The wave was
made using my wave attachment, using a large pitch as well as a 1 3/4 wave
adjustment.

That part of this experiment is fully repeatable.but the chatter part? I know
how I did it, but at this time, I still need to play with it more to see if
this process can be reproduced on different types of wood as well as different
sizes of wood.

I'm sorry if I sound vague about the process. I think of it much like a lathe
chattering tool, but done with a router bit. This was the first one that I've
ever done.

there are still to many variables that need to be understood fully before I can
honestly say It will work on everyone's Legacy every time. After some more play
time using this new idea, I will be all to glad to explain how and why it
happened.

So for now. I'm glad to hear that someone besides me likes what I see. I all to
often feel most of the people with-in this group are not interested in
exploring the ornamental elements of the Legacy.(as far as making the tools
that are needed to break outside the box.)(so to speak.) ;-)

More to come latter. ;-)

Congrats on your new "toy"!
As for your extra parts & pieces: I really need the indexing plates and drive
gears. I got a mill from a widow and she had no idea where any of the necessary
components were (or what her hubby may have done with them). Her kids had come
in and "helped "clean out. My guess - they were in a box that got yard sale'd
or tossed out - who knows.
I would also like to pick up a set of pilaster dogs if you have a set you won't
be using.
Did you get an extra set of Magnate router bits? I could use them as well.
Thanks for considering my requests.
Enjoy your "new" mill!

Problem is I now need to move my 1200 and would consider parting it out. I
did not have any of the upgrades, hence the purchase of the upgraded 1800 but
now have lots of duplicate equipment including indexing plates, rotary table,

I would love to see some pictures of your stock duplicator. I have been slowly
picking up linear bearings, shafts, & other goodies to make one for myself.

Greetings, I motorized my #900 model for less than $200 by patiently watching
e-Bay for the motor and speed controller, the rest is easy, a lovejoy connector
and two limit switches, I put together a hand held unit with two switches, an
on/off and a limit switch override, will try and post pics, "the lurker".

Those are my brackets that I showed. I'm still narrowing down some design

Again, these are designed for the wide side of the rail and have a single

Re: Gears, Pulleys etc.

2012-11-04 Thread parr454

I had the same basic thought of stacking the disks- (baltic birch plywood to be
stable & teeth won't snap off as easy as solid wood) to make gears and using
the Legacy indexing or expanded indexing plate to space the teeth and then
cutting them all at the same time using a V type router bit.

For pulleys, I think the Legacy would be the perfect machine for making them

Bill
You could use Mike's indexing concept, Set up a number of disks and
cutt them in a row,as if you were roping a part. If you set the
correct pitch, after seperating the gears, my guess would be that you
would have a number of gears that all meshed together correctly. it
might work?
Good luck on this idea, and Please send pictures as soon as you can.
As for myself, I will stick with pulleys, thay are easer to make and
much less of a head ache to figure out. ;-)

Subject: Legacy Spindle Motor

Hello Everyone. I have a new toy that I wanted to share with you all.

Its not a new idea, Legacy originally used this type of motor set up on there
Wood Chuck milling system back in the early 1990's and latter again used it on
there Larger Models 2000-2200.
What I've done was to adapt a motor and a pulley onto the indexing shaft,(head
stock.)
My set up is pretty simple, I use a hinges and a piece of uni-sturt with some
pipe clamps to hold my motor, Gravity and some lead weights are all that is
needed to keep enough pressure on the belt so I can use it.
Let me say first, I am Really liking this motor!
The Quality of my spindles finish are the finest that I have ever done on my
machine with out sanding, ("O" ,I forgot to state,This motor also lets me sand
on my machine as well. But more on that latter.)
By speeding up the movement of the spindle, I can slow down the movement of the
carriage, Letting me get the finest cuts that I've ever seen off my machine.
The motor also lets me turn spindle form a templates so much easer and faster
than what I have ever done before. (cutting form the side.)
Now the motor that I have is a high speed motor with a rheostat to control the
speed of the spindle, but honestly a much slower motor would most likely work
as well.(something like 100 rpm should due nicely.)
I will now send you some pictures, If anyone has any comments of questions
Please ask. (I have a lot more to add to my statements, but You all know what
they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. And I don't want to bog down my
system. ) ;-)
So here we go. Please let me know what you think.

the technique. Have a look at the videos
The first is Crank handle indexing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHgzEKnON-o&feature=context-gfa

The second is using the carriage to set the starts for a 4 start rope.

Thanks for watching

Mike

thank you curt that would be great and yes i did have quite a few i keep
everything to do with legacy or i should say i did keep at least the videos are
a lot easier to get than the stuff it self
god i couldn't imagine the cost of importing one of their new machines being
mostly steel and fully assembled
although i did hear a whisper that the new manual machines might arrive in a
flat pack like the old ones were but for me the weight is the killer
