2012-05-08 Thread Okla Mike (Liltwisted)
Honestly Tim, I can't see a need for the adjustable template. I use MDF
and in a matter of 3 minutes I am ready with a template that will not
slide bend or bow. It stays the same shape the whole job and is very
cheap. i must admit though it has been good for the group.

Hi, I looked at this item here in the UK but have been put off by
the review of it.
http://www.axminster.co.uk/fisch-flexi-curve-prod783040/#bottomsection
It comes in three lengths 600, 1000 and 3000mm with the longer two
being critised for being way too stiff to get a satisfactory
curve. The weird thing Tim found originally, although expensive
does seem the best. For me, I will just stick to the "bow string"
approach and mark out onto a ply template to cut on the bandsaw.
Slower but I'm not in any hurry.
Have a look at the review and search out other reviews before
buying maybe?

Hello Bill
Yes that was Tim, that was looking for a flexible template.
(Good find! I have not ever seen this one before!) I think
that I just might buy one for my self. ;-)

The Ribbon twist looks nice too.
What kind of wood is that,Bill?

Thanks for sharing. I will get back with you latter.
Have a good night.

its just laminated pine this was one of the first things I
ever did on the legacy
I remember it being a pain with the usual chatter when
cutting from the side
I wish there was another way of doing them or perhaps a
spiral router bit would work better
I was thinking of doing one in a hard wood but I'm not sure
how it would go
a 2 inch or more cut from the side.
even doing smaller cuts getting deeper each time sooner or
later I will have to take the whole cut at once to clean up

All those pieces are made from delrin, which is a tough but easily
machined industrial-grade plastic. My swords are "functional art",
designed for a lot of high-impact abuse. This material stands up to
those demands better than any hardwood I've seen. A lot of common
items are made from it, like the wheels on Hotwheel cars, plastic
gears, etc. Unlike nylons or even ABS, it cuts very smoothly and
isn't chippy like polycarbonate. Delrin is a trademarked name. The
generic name is acetyl. I only order it in black, though I believe
the uncolored version is an off-white. It's available in both flat
and round stock as well. The lighting in the bottom photo shows the
coloring, but all my pieces look like that. Though there is no grain
in acetyl, I get that effect by sanding and then buffing with
jeweler's rouge, which impregnates the surface with a reddish tint.

At some point I've love to have a 3d scanner. Aside from some old
pieces I have on my wall, I know an antique dealer who specializes in
S.E. Asian artwork and weapons. I'd love to be able to do more
accurate reproductions. Some of those old swords have engraved blades
and highly detailed carved and even jeweled handles.
