Out again, then I bag them up to use again. I totally bury the wood in the
crystals sometimes wrapping cling wrap around the ends of the wood to slow the
drying from the ends which as you know where the crack start from. This is my
method is for log type wood cut strait from the tree.

Wood here fresh cut you only have an hour or so before the ends start to get
those hair line cracks so minutes after cutting I wrap and tape the ends in
the cling wrap leaving the moister to be dawn out by the crystals through the
bark.

RE: wood drying

2024-04-25 Thread bulkeley
Yea the crystals are cheap and reusable, every summer I thinly spread them out
on a big metal tray I have and the hot Australian sun dries them

Out again, then I bag them up to use again. I totally bury the wood in the
crystals sometimes wrapping cling wrap around the ends of the wood to slow the
drying from the ends which as you know where the crack start from. This is my
method is for log type wood cut strait from the tree.

Wood here fresh cut you only have an hour or so before the ends start to get
those hair line cracks so minutes after cutting I wrap and tape the ends in
the cling wrap leaving the moister to be dawn out by the crystals through the
bark.

Re: wood drying

2024-04-24 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
I have used a number of different methods that I have used over the years, All
depending on the size of the wood, These are the methods that I have had good
success with over the years. Boiling the wood in water, and then let dry in a
paper bag. (one hour per inch of thickness.)I have also used PEG. (Polyethylene
Glycol ) with good success.(both soaking the wood, and painting the PEG on.)As
well as a old method I call water displacement. I have used, tung oil, boiler
linseed oil and or mineral oil.(All with very good results.) The idea is you
add oil to the wood until the wood will not take any more, then let dry. the
oil displaces the water in the wood, since the oil dry's out very slowly the
wood dose not shrink or crack.  this is the method I like to use on large wood,
like what I do on my Mook Jong's ("wood man" dummy's/ Martial art dummy's/Wing
Chun dummy's.) But the old method that I use almost all the time today, is
Using a frow and a wood mallet,  splitting the wood along the grain. then
sealing the end grain with wax. (I use Paraffin wax) rubbing the wax over the
end grain then using a torch I melt the wax and then apply a second coat.
sealing the end grain will slow down the evaporation of the water in the wood.
and then let the wood dry out . One year per inch of thickness of the wood./
"Air Drying" is what most people call this method.
Have a good day, everyone.
