Re: Chuck Adapter

2011-06-30 Thread Curtis
Hello All
I just got home form the hardware store. Today I found out that they
had a 2' long 1x8 all thread rod, and nuts to fit. the rod was more
expensive than what I bough mine for, but the nuts were $1.68 ea.the
thickness of the nut is heaver than I like, but a saw or metal cutting
wheel will handle that problem. Just though you would all like to know
that Parts are easer to find than ever before. ;-)

Have a great day ALL!

Re: Chuck Adapter

2011-06-28 Thread Tim Krause
Hi All,

mounting a chuck to a board or waste table is pretty easy. The 1-8 is a common
bolt size. Just drill a hole in the waste board and bolt your chuck in from
the bottom. In my case, the adapter was made from 1-8 all thread. McMaster
sells it as well as most hardware stores.

For years I have considered making a custom swiveling chuck mount to hold work
in the legacy. I've considered making it index and angle at whatever angle I
need so I can use the 2704 bit to make facets or whatever bit comes to mind.
With just mounting the chuck in a fixed position, it seems very limited which
is why I shared this one.

Mounting the threaded adapter to my rotary table is a given. Since I have a
threaded insert in mine right now it's an easy add on. The added height of
the chuck might be the limiting factor on stock Legacy's. I recall we have
about 3" with the rotary table installed, my Nova chuck is 3" tall with low
profile jaws. That's where the added 2" of travel my leg kit provides would
really help.

Having said that, I don't like metal jaws so close to the router bits. I have
discovered that the carbide bits do a fabulous machining job on your expensive
four jaw chuck with a very clean finish and hardly any chatter. In fact, you
will not even notice it until your cut is done. At least that's how I ruined
my jaws :-).

I've got some idea on expanding and contracting plastic that I have not had a
chance to mock up that I hope to share with the group in a few months. I also
have some rotary clamping methods I'd like to bounce around at a later date.

Keep the ideas coming. If anyone needs something machined, contact me offlist
and I will take care of you.

-Tim

Greg. I just went to my favorite metal supply house and bought 12" (14" realy
it was already cut.) for $10.60

Its sold as all thread rod, 1"by 8 threads per inch. Its the same as all my
adaptors that I use For my lathe as well as Legacy.

I am planning to cut it down and turn one end to fit into a bearing, for a
jig Im planning to make.

Just call around Im sure that you will be able to find it in your area if you
take a good look, its not expensive or hard to find once you know where to look.
;-)

  Good luck on your project.

I cant wait to see how it turns out.

Cole mounting that on to the turn table would be a neat idea!

I like the idea. I am going through all the possibilities in my head. Why
don't you plan project around it and see if it works like it should. I want
one. To be able to use a faceplate or chuck in the upright position changees
things instead of tilting the router. Maybe something where you coiuld tilt it
a little would be the next progression.
