not important to this thread per se, but I was told years ago that a
company in Westbury NY supplied the lead screws for the Legacy machines
directly to the Legacy company... I went directly to them for the 16ft
piece I needed for my Legacy length modification and had a somewhat lengthy
conversation with the company's management... moot point now but relevant
if anyone in the group needs a length of lead screw for their own
modifications... strange thing about it was the fact that the company was
about 1/8 mile from where I was living at the time... the mod gods were
with me for that very much needed part!... LOL!... Joe B.

BTW, I checked my tap against the lead screw and they
nested perfectly full length. So the ACME tap which I think

Hi Bill

I spoke with Legacy this morning and they made their own lead screws and they
were indeed square profile threads. This would make sense as the trapezoid
profile would push the screw out of engagement with a load. If I had access to
a lathe I would make a thread chaser tool to rework the profile of my half nuts
made with the standard acme tap

Anybody got a piece of lead screw floating around?

I took a closer look this morning while at the Woodshop and my half nuts were
made with a tap that has trapezoid thread form, like a standard acme. The lead
screw has square thread form, like a buttress thread. I am going to consult my
Machinery Handbook to find what is needed. But the difference between the two
profiles is preventing the half nuts I had made from fully engaging. Diameters
and lead are correct. When I obtain the proper tap, I should be able to
rethread my current blocks and be good to go. BTW there is no reason these
half nuts couldn’t be made from hard maple.

Re: Split nut tap

2024-01-22 Thread Tim Porter
Got me.   Not sure where the machine came from, as it is far older than anyone here knows about but since we have the owners manual and stuff I am thinking it was purchased new.  I don’t believe anyone would have changed out the lead screws and I am pretty sure they have a square profile.  I will double check it when I go back in Wednesday.  I am going to reach out to Legacy to see if they can shed any light on it.   I am also going to put a notice on this board to see if someone had a piece of lead screw on hand.Sent from my iPadTim and Cathy Porter1902 Dandridge St  D7Sun City Center FL 33573H. 813-419-4169C. 815-861-1505On Jan 22, 2024, at 12:05 PM, bulke...@mmnet.com.au wrote:As far as I know legacy never made a square thread leadscrew I didn’t notice that in your pics where did that leadscrew come from ?One of the members might have one they could sell to you to make it right or there are places that sell it I believe  Bill  From: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Tim PorterSent: Tuesday, January 23, 2024 3:45 AMTo: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: Split nut tap I took a closer look this morning while at the Woodshop and my half nuts were made with a tap that has trapezoid thread form, like a standard acme.  The lead screw has square thread form, like a buttress thread.  I am going to consult my Machinery Handbook to find what is needed. As far as I know legacy never made a square thread leadscrew I didn’t notice
that in your pics where did that leadscrew come from ?

One of the members might have one they could sell to you to make it right or
there are places that sell it I believe

4.23 threads per inch and that will never fit our acme lead screws. That’s my 2

this is the tap I would buy it looks like the one I bought but it is a
trapezoidal tap so it will be 30 degrees and not 29 but because your tapping

Delrin not metal there is a bit of leeway finding the exact correct one is
almost impossible I looked for 10 years and of course you don’t know till you
try it that it will work with a possible bad batch out there, I had to do that
I took a chance and it worked, one last thing the recommended tapping drill

Is a little small for Delrin and one degree out so 7/16 is what I used and it
allows for the strange cutting properties of the Delrin. But all this is just
what I would do you all must make up your own minds here is some Delrin I
tapped https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOUW3xblB_4

4.23 threads per inch and that will never fit our acme lead screws. That’s my 2

Hey Bill

Its been a while, I have two Acme screw taps (5/8-4 and One 5/8-8 tap) My first
tap was a home made tap.

I used a short piece of an Legacy Acme screw to make the tap. the other I
bought on the web. some years back. (I wasn't aware there were a different
thread angle. I guess I just got lucky?)

I was wondering if these home made split nuts made by Tim P. could be
re-molded. or if it would be a waist of time?

HEY. Tim P. If you like, Send me the plastic, and I can try to cut them for
you.

I know that taps that I own fit my Legacy. If you can send me the part, I will
tap it and send it back to you.

Send me a private E-mail at curt.geo...@yahoo.com

It wont work curt sorry bin it and start again only a couple of threads at the
start will be right all the rest will be loose so it will wear out quick

Knowing the Chinese they probably made the tap cutting a metric pitch instead
of a USA threads per inch and that will make it come out wrong but unless you
measure it properly the average person might not pick it up so there might be a
whole batch of bad tapes out there China is not renowned for high quality
products.

It sounds to me as if the slit nut thread is actually able to fit over
the lead screw as you would have intended it to do and therefore we are
dealing with a fit that is too loose.  If the fit is too loose than
there can only be 3 things that could be wrong.

1. The bottom, un-threaded part of the nut,  is not letting the
threaded half rest deep enough into the thread.  To check this, set
the threaded part onto the shaft and then slide the carriage over to
the split nut and see if the two halves are on the same level.  Best
scenario will be they are even.  If there is a gap left between the
top and bottom, you have to start over.  If the overlap each other,
it is an easy adjustment.  Sand the threaded side until they just
barley line up and almost slide over each other.
2. When you threaded the split nut, if you used a drill to turn the tap
and then reversed it to get it back out, you could have wiped out
part of the threads and now you are stuck with a loose fit.
Instead, tap it by hand and then continue the tap through and not
back it up.  If you want to use a drill press to make sure you are
going straight, only go part way and finish it by hand.
3. The tap, even though it is 5/8-4 it may have a different thread
configuration.  That would be evident in the cut itself, look at if
there are square corners or if there is any radius relief in them.

Hope this helps.

RE: Split nut tap

2024-01-21 Thread bulkeley
It could be the tap there are different 5/8 by 4 acme taps out there the angle
of the teeth of the tap can vary a bit making

It not quite fit one is 29 degrees and the other is 30 degrees. Acme (29-degree
angle) threads are used much more commonly in the United States while the
closely related trapezoidal thread form (30-degree angle) is preferred in
Europe.

Re: Split nut tap

2024-01-21 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Hey there Tim.
ONE question,  If you put your new split nut on the Legacy Acme screw. dose it
fit the threads? if so then see if the plastic was cut square to your machine's
holder. My guess is the cut is off, so it will not line up. If this is the
case. you can re-shape with a sander to get your split nut aligned with your
machine to make it work.

Dose the split nut fit the shaft if you lay it on the acme screw?  Perhaps it

running

accurately.

Re: Legacy split nut tap

2022-06-11 Thread Dan Krager
Good find, Tim.

Wanted to bust out my new Australian language skills taught to me by my son
who is exposed to how English is spoken throughout the world. Bill might be
heard to say "Goo donyam ate", which is Aussie English for "good on ya
mate". LOL!

Love Australian expressions and accents! OK, ya forced me If you hear
an Aussie saying "rise up late", he's just talking about razor blades.
