It would also handle the heat in a different and better way than CA. After turning many Acrylic pens on a lathe I have learned that being careful with cut depth and pressure on the material is very important! With that in mind I think I will use very sharp bits, very shallow cuts and medium feed speeds. To reduce the heat and chipout of the material I would rather reduce the cut depth and speed up the feed rate. With acrylics it is important to remember that the material is the boss. Take what it will give you and you have a better chance of success. I have been turning at 3000 rpm on my lathe and had the material cut like butter with a hot knife then all the sudden have a different feel because of a density change requiring a different pressure on the chisel. Picky stuff! I will let you know how it turns out.. I feel like going out in the shop and cutting a piece of square Corian into a round dowel in one pass just to see how much the material would complain. -Tim - Original Message - From: "SteveEJ" To: "Legacy Ornamental Mills" Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2010 5:51 PM Subject: Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy? Well, I both know and respect Barry, but for gluing two different materials together I would still use epoxy. I've had more failures using medium CA than I have had with epoxy. Your mileage may vary. I did watch the video and noticed he is specifying a "Pen Makers" CA glue which is flexible. Personally I've never seen this before. Also I think his sanding to over 1000 grit is excessive. Tim just found this. berry gross videos are pretty good. Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy?
I have done many acrylic pen on my jet lathe; never a spiral. Acrylics are brittle and do wear lathe turning tools more quickly than for exotic hardwoods. Also polishing spiral turned acrylics would be a challenge. I might suggest a very find grit flapped sander to get into the spiral grooves. I typically use 1200 or higher grit sandpaper followed by Bealls polishing system for smoothest / polished finish. Closest thing on my Legacy 1000EX was a spiral candlestick. - Craig On Dec 5, 2010 4:43 PM, "Bill Bulkeley" wrote: > Hi Steve > when I did a acrylic pen it was just about the first thing I ever did on a > legacy so I was very ignorant of what to do > I remember following the pen instructions off the legacy page > I turned it round first then did several light cuts to achieve the 3 spiral > rope pitch with the router on full speed > the finished seemed OK but I didn't polish it or any thing. > but I have a couple of acrylic blanks here now so I will go into the shop in > a few minutes and make a pen taking pictures as I go and post them so good > or bad you guys will know how it goes > > Bill > > > > - Original Message - > From: "SteveEJ" > To: "Legacy Ornamental Mills" > Sent: Monday, December 06, 2010 6:46 AM > Subject: Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy? > > > Bill, > Was there any special precautions that need to be used above normal? > How about router speed and feed rate? Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy?
Hi Steve when I did a acrylic pen it was just about the first thing I ever did on a legacy so I was very ignorant of what to do I remember following the pen instructions off the legacy page I turned it round first then did several light cuts to achieve the 3 spiral rope pitch with the router on full speed the finished seemed OK but I didn't polish it or any thing. but I have a couple of acrylic blanks here now so I will go into the shop in a few minutes and make a pen taking pictures as I go and post them so good or bad you guys will know how it goes Bill - Original Message - From: "SteveEJ" To: "Legacy Ornamental Mills" Sent: Monday, December 06, 2010 6:46 AM Subject: Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy? Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy?
Hello Everyone. I found this on a pen making web site. http://content.penturners.org/articles/2009/The_Acrylic_Revolution.pdf I dose not answer a lot of questions on this topic but It is a good starting point. I was not aware of how many pen turning web sites there are out there. I will keep looking for the answers we all are looking for. But perhaps we should all go out there (like Bill did.) and try using this stuff for our self's? and after we do that, then perhaps we can also try making your own blanks out of Acrylic, for other jobs that we are planning to do. Who knows? This just might become an interesting topic, that we all can learn from. talk to you all latter. Hi Bill, Assuming you made a three start rope twist on your acrylic pen did you start out by rounding the material and then roping or did you just take three passes from square stock. I would love to hear what it takes to get a good finish on acrylic coming off the legacy as well. Hi Steve, If the acrylic does not melt from the router bit I would think you would be able to take the pen over to a buffing wheel and use the standard buffing procedure for acrylic sheet. You would go through multiple stages of buffing with different rubbing compounds. I would hate to think we would have to wet sand a rope profile to clean off the chatter marks possibly left by the router bit! On a round part wet sanding would not be a problem since it can be done on the lathe. -Tim - Original Message - From: "SteveEJ" To: "Legacy Ornamental Mills" Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2010 11:46 AM Subject: Re: Useing acrylics on the Legacy?
