Re: [LegacyUG] Problems with Legacy

2006-08-15 Thread Ann Parsons
Beth,

For what it is worth I have used Legacy since v.2. Had a problem with v.2.
The president of Legacy contacted me, said if I sent the file to him he
would do what he could. Me... I only know how to work the on/off button. He
walked me thru sending the file, he fixed the problem and sent it back. Then
before Sherry started working for Legacy she helped me with a problem that
really had nothing to do with the Legacy Program it was something I was
doing. I use Win XP home edition. I betcha Sherry could help you, if not she
will know who can help you. I know how distressed you must be. I feel sure
someone at Legacy will help you get your problem fixed. You have a whole
bunch of people caring about you.

That should not be the case. I run quite a bit of beta software and
generally treat my machine pretty badly, often when Legacy is running, and
have never had to reinstall. Have you looked into your computer maintenance,

does it need the air vents cleaning - is it overheating, have you run a RAM
check? Do you defrag regularly, do a hard drive check and regularly empty
your temp files and cookies. Finally do you use anti-malware programs such
as Spybot ot Adaware.

These are the sory of things I would be looking at if I had problems like
that.

Dear list,

Just wondering how many Legacy users run Legacy routinely without any
problems whatsover.
Legacy has never liked my computer. I would really like to continue using
Legacy but get tired of reinstalling, deleting files etc.
If anyone is running Legacy using Windows 2000 Professional please contact
me off list for troubleshooting.

I thought I had my problems resolved but now have reappeared for an unknown
reason. Not unusual with computers. And no I have not contacted support
this
time, I already know the routine and am tired of uninstalling, etc.

Kindest regards,
Beth G.

I feel the same way.    I run XP and Legacy ver.
5.   Have used Legacy since ver 2.  Never had any problems until I did
the final upgrade to Legacy 5.

My program frequently hangs when I am using Sources and moving from
window to window.   I've done all the restarting, deleting usr files,
computer and file maintenance, reinstall, etc., and never quite get it
completely fixed.   I've had extensive conversations with Sherry and
Brian about it.  At this point, I just live with it.

Thanks Cathy,

I switch programs depending on my goals; but for now Legacy is the one. I am
entering all of my research into one program and Legacy has the best data
entry for preliminary research, other than some very complicated programs. I
also do not like to use the narrative sentences for other than basic facts
and Legacy gives me that option.

It would be helpful to have some indication on the Family View or the
Pedigree View of the Child-Parent Relationship; but I have not found that
option. I will enter a notation either with the spouse's name or one of the
other name fields. I have not found all of the features available in Legacy
so if I can display the child-parent relationship on the Family view or
Pedigree view let me know.

Thanks so much for you assistance.

RE: [LegacyUG] Problems with Legacy

2006-08-15 Thread Cary
I had a fleeting problem with Legacy that turned out to have been caused
by the McAfee security suite. (It was also messing up other programs.)
I'm now using another virus scan product with no issues anywhere. I'm on
XP Home edition.

Is it possible your problems are from your security programs/settings
rather than Legacy? Sometimes the actual root cause is not where the
problem manifests.

Re: [LegacyUG] [fromDate]

2006-08-15 Thread Bert van Kootwijk

Brian,

Thanks, that does the job.

However I have a second question. Why is a period needed for the use with
[fromDate]? In many cases the beginning date of an event is know but no end
date. Also a real future is possible. Example: I live in a town from
1-2-1973 till today and further. In this case I like to use a sentence like:
I live in -town- from 1-2-1973.

That is because the format of that date period is incorrect, you should
use a sp-sp to separate the two dates. Try using 2-2-2005 - 3-3-2006. Be
sure also that the format of the date uses the one you have selected in

Re: [LegacyUG] Renumbering MRINs

2006-08-15 Thread Brian/Support

Keith,

1. You will need the Deluxe Edition to be able to do this.

2. Next Go to the Marriage List and click on the MRIN Button to sort the
list by MRIN. click the options Button and select print to make a list
of all your existing MRINs. From the Preview you can make a PDF file to
save on your hard drive or to print a hard copy on your printer.

3. Compare that list to your file numbers and make notes which MRINs
need to be renumbered.

4. Go To Tools Renumber RINS where you can then begin the renumbering
manually. You cannot have two marriages with the Same MRIN so it will
mean temporarily making a number available before you can renumber
another MRIN to fill the spot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Blue down-pointing triangle in Individual Information short cut key?

2006-08-15 Thread Susan Daily

When you want to look at possible shortcuts, you can always go to
Help, then search for Shortcuts and you'll see the link to Shortcut
keys. (Learned that from a LUGger!)

That said, I saw nothing that would bring you into the Master location
list. I tried a few of the ALT + commands, but none of those worked
that way. I also looked at the drop down menus above, and none of
those showed a shortcut next to the View Master Locations list.

If they don't exist, perhaps the other ALT + numbers could be
programmed to include those three buttons.

Good luck - perhaps someone else has stumbled on a key!

I -think- there is a shortcut key that will allow you to go to the blue
triangle for whichever location field you are in. Does anyone know what it
is please?

[LegacyUG] New method of receiving Legacy News and Notifications

2006-08-15 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
As you probably know, we publish news articles related to Legacy and
genealogy in general. The following article explains about 4 different
methods of reading these articles:
http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2006/01/different_metho.html

In response to our users' requests, we have added another method by which to
receive notification of new articles. You can now subscribe (free) to the
Legacy News blog. By doing so, you will receive an email whenever new
articles are published.

Benefits - you wouldn't need to check the Legacy Home tab or your RSS
software to see if there are any new articles - they'll automatically be
emailed to you. You'll also be among the first to be notified of Legacy
updates or new products, such as the recent release of the new training
video set.

There are two methods to subscribe:

1) Click on this link: http://www.feedblitz.com/f/?Sub=78561

2) Visit our blog at http://www.legacynews.typepad.com and enter your email
address in the new subscribe box in the upper right.

Re: [LegacyUG] Documenting unproven children

2006-08-15 Thread Alice McVearry
I enter the child with the parents, then mark the end of the child's **given
name** with a tilde (~). On Family View for both the parents and child, the
tilde is a clear indicator something is amiss. On Individual view for the
child, the tilde at the end of the given name is also in evidence. Then in
notes, I make the notation, ~ = unproven child, and whatever reminders I
think will help with the search. (At my age I forget stuff.) When I am
looking for unproven children to work on at a later date, I do a Detailed
Search with the query individual given names contains ~. It's easy to spot
in the Name list, too. If the tilde has some other computer function within
Legacy, I haven't come across a conflict yet, but haven't made a GEDCOM,
either, that contains the tilde as a marker. -- Alice

I just learned the names of my 3-great-grandparents, Edwin Wild and

now I
have other four names that are possibly additional offspring. I want to
document these possibilities until either proven or disproven.

What is the best way to do this? I don't really want to bury this in

in
some other manner flag these names?

What do others do in this situation?

Re: [LegacyUG] Report language...?

2006-08-15 Thread Brian/Support

Martin,

The French Language Version of Legacy, plus other international
versions, is still being developed and trialled. Only the French Testing
group has access to that version at this time. For full details on the
international versions go to:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/InternationalLegacyVersions.asp

There are however a limited number of reports where you can choose the
report language. On those, and those reports only, click on the report
language button, select any of the language.trn files and the labels
etc. for the report will be in the selected language. Of course the data
you have entered will still be in the language of entry.

The language selection on the Options menu is for the language of the
main program and, at this time, only the four variations of English (US,
Cdn, Aus and UK) are included in the version available for download at
our site.

Keith,

1. You will need the Deluxe Edition to be able to do this.

2. Next Go to the Marriage List and click on the MRIN Button to sort the
list by MRIN. click the options Button and select print to make a list of
all your existing MRINs. From the Preview you can make a PDF file to save
on your hard drive or to print a hard copy on your printer.

3. Compare that list to your file numbers and make notes which MRINs need
to be renumbered.

4. Go To Tools Renumber RINS where you can then begin the renumbering
manually. You cannot have two marriages with the Same MRIN so it will mean
temporarily making a number available before you can renumber another MRIN
to fill the spot.

There is another alternative you might want to consider. I have a source

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Definition Timeline Sharing

2006-08-15 Thread Nancy Bender
I have created a few events to go along with the Will event. Since that
one was set up for when someone signed a will, I made to others that fit
some of my documents:

Will Filed:
[HisHer] will was filed [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

and Will Recipient:
[HeShe] was named in the will of [Desc], [onDate], [inPlace].
[Notes][Sources]

In this one, I add in the notes what was bequeathed (sp?) to the person.

Bert's e-mail regarding the [FromDate] code has reminded me about a
 question
I wanted to ask. I have seen some instances of TMG users sharing event
definitions and wondered, does anyone have any Legacy ones to share?

I assume that many people will have created new events and/or changed
existing ones. It would be great to see how people are putting these to
 use.
 Anyone care to share?

Also it seemed to me that with the release of V6 we would start to see an
influx of Timelines created by each other, but this doesn't seem to be
the

case and may be an under used function. Does anyone have any timelines to
 share?

Personally I have created only one, which may be of limitied use to
 others,
it is a timeline of the town Middlesbrough in England. Middlesbrough is a
relatively young town which developed quickly due to heavy industry. Of
course if anyone has any relatives in this town it could be useful.
Please

let me know if you'd like a copy of it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Problems with Legacy

Arnie,

It appears that you purchased the IMSI release of Legacy. The tree on
the front of the box is actually a Relationship Report based on
relationships shown when using the Relationship Calculator, found under the
Tools menu. It indicates the line between two individuals and although
similar to a drop-down chart, it's really not the same.

Thanks for using Legacy.

I use Legacy 4.0 with no problems with windows XP. No problems with Legacy
except with my ability to do something correctly per the Legacy manual. My
only problem with Legacy is the lack of generating TREES as does FTM and my
old Mac Reunion program. I tried Charting Companion and am not in love with
it. I use FTM 9.0 for trees. I understand many others use the same method
to manufacture Trees. That is, going to other programs.
OK, so it is inconceivable to me, that with all the mail about users and
listers wanting included TREES that Legacy management does not do anything
about it. I am no programmer, but how hard could it be to expand the 3
generation trees included. Also, on the front cover of my Legacy Family Tree
box is a Johnathan Martin Brown Family Tree in top down Box format of 5
generations with pictures on either side of the boxes. In the boxes is some
limited information about the people. I thought this tree would cover all
generations and is one of the reasons I bought the program to begin with.
How do I make this tree anyway. I cannot find it in my book, or am I
overlooking something?

Sorry for my tirade and hope in Legacy 7.0 trees will be included, then
Legacy will be the Number 1 genealogy program not only in content, but in
sales as well. FYI at a local Fort Worth College only FTM is taught for
genealogy. I took the course and it sold a lot of FTM, especially when the
teacher unrolled a Family Tree about 30 or 40 feet long. However, I did not
see the reports (the strength of Legacy, but you need trees to become number
1, yes redundant)
