Re: [LegacyUG] Receiving Wrong emails

2007-04-01 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Carmel,

"I am receiving your customers inquiries at my E-Mail address. So far
this morning I have received 15 different E mail. Could you please
rectify this situation."

You must have signed up to this discussion list to receive the posts
from it - "posts" are what we call emails sent to a list like this.
This list is for users of the Legacy program to help each other find the
answers to their queries about using the program; the vast majority of
posts are from users of the program, though staff at Legacy also read
the list and contribute when they see a need.

If you don't want to be subscribed to the list, follow the instructions
that are at the end of *every* post to unsubscribe yourself.

However, if you are using Legacy for your genealogy, you may like to
stick around and read what comes in. This is a very helpful list, and
you can learn a lot just from reading other peoples' questions and
answers. Possibly even things that you didn't realise would help you
use the program effectively.

The list can be busy at times (though it is not the busiest one I belong
to by far), so you may like to set a filter in your email program to
pick out the list mail as it comes in and redirect them to a folder
separate from your other mail, so you can concentrate on the list when
you are ready to, and ignore it the rest of the time. I do this for
each of the many (at least 20) lists I belong to - each has its own
filter and folder, so they're all separate from each other and away from
my personal mail.

I can tell from the headers of your post that you are using Outlook
Express - I have some instructions on my personal web site for setting a
filter in OE (and for a few others as well); they're written for a
different list, but are easily adapted by substituting this list's
address for the other one. You'll find the instructions at
http://www.geocities.com/wendy_m_howard/How-to.htm#RuleFilter

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

Re: [LegacyUG] Font Sizes in Notes - too small

2007-04-01 Thread Ana
I had this problem of tiny fonts in note screens & found it is somehow
tied to the Options>Customize>fonts> "stretch fonts when resizing" box.

Experiment with un-checking this box, closing the Options screen - then
go to any notes screen - click on Zoom & choose a nice size. Click Save.

Close and then go back and recheck the "stretch fonts when resizing" box.

You might need to close Legacy, then re-open in the above steps.

I have also opened Legacy and found all fonts reset to the default fonts
for no apparent reason. So far I don't have the foggiest notion of why
this happens!!

Re: [LegacyUG] Font Sizes in Notes - too small

2007-04-01 Thread Dawn Crowley
Dragging the general notes box does not make my font size get bigger. I
have to click on "zoom" to do that. While leaving it on size 12 font
and dragging the box, it gets completely illegibly tiny. If I select an
overly large font from the zoom list, then go back to 12, then it
appears as 12. This was an existing & previously reported problem.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on C:\ + D:\

2007-04-01 Thread ronald ferguson

From what you say it would seem that your Drive D is either a partion or
slave HD and you obviously have two versions of Legacy running 6.0.0.118 on
Drive D and 6.0.0.127 on Drive C since they cannot coexist on the same
location.

To put a copy on Drive D you would need to download and save the full set-up
program to a convenient place (if you do not have a download folder your
desktop will do) and install it to the same location as 6.0.0.118 (no need
to uninstall btw), presumably D:\ .

I do not understand why you might need two versions though and would have
thought that one or the other would suffice - hence you could just delete
the one on Drive D and use the one on Drive C. thus avoiding redownloading.
You might have to direct the program to the files when you first open it .
You can also set the file associations by right clicking on you .fdb folder
and browsing to the Legacy program on Drive C and clicking "always use this
program".

Hope that's clear (it's a bit late here!).

Need a little help here.  I just downloaded 6.0.0.127 and it goes right
into C:\ and loaded it right up.

I always backup my current file to D:\ to save space on C Drive.  When I
go D Drive and click on the Legacy shortcut it takes me right into my
file.  While there, when I click on Legacy Home it shows that I am using
6.0.0.118.

What must I do to see that each drive shows the 6.0.0.127 version?

 Carey

I'd enter the present-day location AND the old one ... something
like this ... (locations made up with Brigham being the current name):

Brigham (old bridge by the river), CountyName, NJ, US
Brigham (River Road), CountyName, NJ, US
Brigham (Trinity Churchyard), CountyName, NJ, US

It's a little unorthodox, but very understandable ... and ALL the

Brigham names will sort together for your research runs.

I take it right down to house numbers ...

Brooklyn (Flatbush Avenue 123), Kings, NY, US
Brooklyn (Flatbush Avenue 483), Kings, NY, US
Brooklyn (Ocean Parkway 124), Kings, NY, US

Done this way, the addresses sort first by location (Brooklyn)
and
then by street names and then by street numbers... if you enter the street

number first and then the street name, 124 Ocean Parkway would sort in the

middle ... and 126 River Road, Ames, CountyName, Iowa, US would sort into
the middle of the Brooklyn numbers ...

Try a few and see if you like it ... the Legacy Master Location
List makes this easy to do ...

I suggested this a few years ago ... you should be able to find a

discussion in the archives ...

I found the following information when looking under
  options
 customize
 fonts
Perhaps this will help you. I tried it, but still had the problem you
describe when resizing the notes window. A temporary fix is to click on
"zoom" and then adjust the point size to be larger.

Mine claimed to be "12", but was more like about "8". After I set it to
"18", then put it back to "12", it worked fine until I resized once more.
Notes font resizes whether the box that says "stretch fonts when resizing"
box is ticked or unticked. (I dunno why that might be.)

Dawn

Customize - Fonts

You can change the fonts used for screen forms and printed reports.

Screen fonts are used on the screen to display labels, data, and notes.
Report fonts are used for various sections of a generated report. To select
a different font for use on the screen displays or on reports, click the
Change button on the appropriate line and then select the new font by
highlighting its name and clicking OK. You can also set the minimum and
maximum font size to be used on the screen. As you stretch and reduce the
size of various windows in Legacy, the font sizes are changed accordingly.
If you shrink a window to a small size, the fonts may become unreadable.
The minimum font size value stops this from happening. A minimum font size
of 7 or 8 is usually a good setting. If desired, the stretching of fonts
can be turned off by unchecking the Stretch Fonts when Resizing Screens
option.

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do items

2007-04-01 Thread Sharon Perdue

I have a record for each of my direct line surnames -
example:
given name field - Surname of
surname field - RITCHIE
In this record, I have events such as meaning of the surname, origin of the
surname, distrubution of the surname in various US censuses, all of the
different spellings I have found, etc. In the case of RITCHIE, there is a
town currently named Richfield, but originally named Ritchie or Ritchie
Fields, North Carolina - as a NOTES event, I have the town history from a
county publication, which gives the original settlers named RITCHIE. When I
print reports, I use this "record" as an introduction.

You could use something like this for your surname to-do's.

Could you use the general To Do list found under View? You could list the
item with the surname first: Ex: Smith - find 1850 Wyoming census for John
Smith, etc. Then all the Smiths would be together. Just a suggestion.

Hi Listers
Can someone please let me know if there is a way to set up Surname
only to do items? Rather than link it to a particular person.

I've been using Access db tables for my research logs and I'd like to
change it. I prefer To Do items over the Research Guidance area
because I can add my own repositaries for To Dos and the American
sites aren't particularly useful to me in Australia.

Re: [LegacyUG] 6.0.0.127

2007-04-01 Thread Yaacov Slizak
They introduced a fix not advertised. In previous versions the process of
exporting to GEDCOM 5.5
produced a proprietary TAB "_MEDI" - instead of the standard "MEDI" (without
the underscore)-
which was not recognized by other programs.

This has been fixed in 6.0.0.127.

Jake

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do items

2007-04-01 Thread Elsie Saar
Could you use the general To Do list found under View? You could list
the item with the surname first: Ex: Smith - find 1850 Wyoming census
for John Smith, etc. Then all the Smiths would be together. Just a
suggestion.

Hi Listers
Can someone please let me know if there is a way to set up Surname
only to do items? Rather than link it to a particular person.

I've been using Access db tables for my research logs and I'd like
to

change it. I prefer To Do items over the Research Guidance area
because I can add my own repositaries for To Dos and the American
sites aren't particularly useful to me in Australia.

Re: [LegacyUG] Need help with Locations that keep changing names

2007-04-01 Thread Bob Bashford

That may be the case, but I don't use automated search very much
... though I do like the way Legacy scours the IGI so thoroughly.

It does seem that automated search wouldn't much care ... the
city/town/village name is still the first item in the field.

I'd enter the present-day location AND the old one ... something
like this ... (locations made up with Brigham being the current name):

Brigham (old bridge by the river), CountyName, NJ, US
Brigham (River Road), CountyName, NJ, US
Brigham (Trinity Churchyard), CountyName, NJ, US
It's a little unorthodox, but very understandable ... and ALL
the Brigham names will sort together for your research runs.

I take it right down to house numbers ...
Brooklyn (Flatbush Avenue 123), Kings, NY, US
Brooklyn (Flatbush Avenue 483), Kings, NY, US
Brooklyn (Ocean Parkway 124), Kings, NY, US
Done this way, the addresses sort first by location (Brooklyn)
and then by street names and then by street numbers... if you enter the
street number first and then the street name, 124 Ocean Parkway would
sort in the middle ... and 126 River Road, Ames, CountyName, Iowa, US
would sort into the middle of the Brooklyn numbers ...
Try a few and see if you like it ... the Legacy Master Location
List makes this easy to do ...
I suggested this a few years ago ... you should be able to find
a discussion in the archives ...

the Dutch again) and then to New Jersey near what was then Bergen (now
Jersey City) on what is now the Hackensack River. Every place these
people touched seems to have changed names about 16 times, with some of
their NJ property being partly in New York at one point and then back to
NJ. Even the Hackensack River was then the Herring.

I started out just using the name at the time, but this means I have many
location names for the same place. This is very confusing unless there is
some way to link them as alias location names in Legacy. Is there? I
don't want 3 names for the location of the same house over time, but don't
want to lose the original names either. And I need the modern names for
help when planning research. Also, some sources have only the old name,
some have "Old Bridge, the present River Edge" type references, with
"present" in that example meaning 1935.

Suggestions?

What about my picures. At the moment I am trying to put all my pictures,

Will I have to import those pictures onto my laptop?

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Millennia grants to you the right to use the

more than one computer (such as a laptop) as long as there is no

I have it installed on my desktop and my laptop. I backup all my data
