Re: [LegacyUG] HELP! duplicate multimedias

2007-06-14 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova

Hi Lisa,

Good news / Bad news.
The bad news is my duplication was different from yours. After viewing your
attachment I see you have duplicate source pictures for (each) one source
citation. I had duplicate citations, each of which had the same identical
picture attachment(s) or sometimes no picture attachment. I accomplished
this by Intellimerging laptop to main computer databases after I had renamed
a few sources on main only. After merging I had a source "1053431" and
another "LDS film 1053431", later I noticed they were the same source and so
I merged them, really dumb.

The good news, if you join the other Legacy User Group, Enter "subscribe" in
subject or body of email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] There is a super
Legacy / Access guru, Dennis Kowallek who would know how to write a delete
query to remove your duplicate source citation pictures.

Good luck, sorry the one he gave me doesn't apply to your case.

Richard,
It sounds like we did the same thing but I did it in another software,
using the equivalent of the intellimerge feature. At least I'm no
alone..someone else knows my frustration. Thx for the offer for the
code lookup!

Lisa,

I had the same problem recently. I caused it myself by the way I did an
intellimerge in Legacy, (long story), anyway someone gave me SQL code
for an Access query to fix such a problem as yours. I'll look it up
tomorrow, maybe not early, but it should work.

Thanks Richard, that is interesting but the locations are fine. What
I need is to print out a list of ALL the actual images with who they
are attached to.
For example this list you sent me to shows I have files in:
1.C:\Legacy\photos
2.C:\Legacy\documents

That is correct, but on some folks they have somehow gotten a
reference entered twice to the same file in one of the two folders so
that the same photo shows up twice when you look at that individual's
photos. I need to know if the software will search for duplicates or
somehow allow me to print out a list of everyone with all the
referenced files for images listed so I can more readily identify
duplicates. ANYTHING would be better than just trying to search
through every one of some 24,000 names! I'm so irritated this other
software did this! It has wreaked havoc on our database! :(
Thx!

Lisa,

If you have Access try making a copy of your .fdb file and having a look at
tblBP which contains the paths to the pictures. If one of these is
duplicated then I suggest changing the "1" in the "USED" column to "0" (ie
one to zero) then saving as FileName1.fdb and see if that removes the
duplicates.

It is a simple matter for Legacy to find the new location as all you
need to do is when it finds a missing picture is to point it to the
folder with all the pictures in and it will then find the others. You
can always split the find later and redirect Legacy to the new folder.

Re: [LegacyUG] HELP! duplicate multimedias

2007-06-14 Thread kb

Lisa,
You might be able to fix this by editing at the gedcom level - if
tediously. In principle, you would export to a gedcom (giving it a
precautionary different name), open that in any text editor which
handles the file size and has "Search and Replace", then locate each
duplicate and delete it. This is time consuming because you have to
visit each occurrence of a photograph, but you go directly to each one
and don't miss any. This also assumes that the problem is not
something exotic, but if it is, looking at the gedcom should give
information which higher grade help can use to better advise you.

I used the Sample family file from Legacy 6, as that has graphics,
exported it as a gedcom and right clicked it so I could force Wordpad to
open it. I've copied a fragment below. The numbers denote the levels
of each line and the next group, in capitals, is a Tag. I used
OBJE(space) for my search, but if you know your photos are in only one
or two folders, the best choice would be the file folder name and enough
of the path to ensure uniqueness, e.g. "iles\Legacy\Pictures\". Looking
at the fragment below, the last line of the preceding record has a
level of 2 and a CAUS (cause) tag. The next record starts at the same
level and is a SOURce one. Depending from it at level 3 is an OBJEct
one, with a further subordinate description on level 4 that its FORM is
a jpg file and the FILE is named C:\Program Files\Legacy\Pictures\sample
- 1957 Oct 09 letter to Virginia Larsen from Mabel Hilton.jpg. The rest
of the data for this Source record is on the lines below until the level
pops back up to level 2 or above, in this case at the beginning of the
next Source record.

Your gedcom must have some duplication which repeats the file
designation, probably with some or possibly all of the surrounding
lines. Hopefully, the fix will be obvious or you will be able to post a
snippet which will get you better advice - perhaps even some magic from
someone expert with regular expressions. Feel free to contact me
offline and I'll help if I can, but this computer is in deep trouble
with hardware problems so I may go dark quite soon..

Re: [LegacyUG] HELP! duplicate multimedias

2007-06-14 Thread Gary Templeman
If you manually added those names I agree. If they were added through an
import then you can still step back and restore the original data, then do
the import again after first removing the multimedia links. You can also
make sure you only import unique people and not duplicates so there are no
people that get merged and end up with two or more multimedia entries. As I
said, this is only another option IF no other simpler solution is found.

A thought has come to mind! But first how many different picture
folders do you have for Legacy? The reason I ask this. is that if you
merge the pictures into one folder (I realise this may be very big)
when doing so Windows will draw your attention to the duplicates (
assume that they have the same file name?) and you can just refuse to
merge them.

It is a simple matter for Legacy to find the new location as all you
need to do is when it finds a missing picture is to point it to the
folder with all the pictures in and it will then find the others. You
can always split the find later and redirect Legacy to the new folder.

I'm in the process of learning Legacy, but I have a problem I'm
hoping some of the experts on this group can help me with. Another
software program put in duplicate entries for photos and documents
(all duplicates are multimedia items) attached to the genral
person or a person's fact item. They are EXACT duplicates
referencing the same image, and making the image and it's
description appear twice on a fact/person. :( Is there a way to
have Legacy search for and consolidate/remove so that there is
only one reference to each multimdedia item? If not, is there a
way for me to get Legacy to give me a list of people with
duplicates so I can more easily locate them. This is a MESS and
I'm hoping Legacy, which is apparently a much more powerful
application, can help me straighten it out.

Thx!
Lisa

Richard,
It sounds like we did the same thing but I did it in another software,
using the equivalent of the intellimerge feature. At least I'm no

I had the same problem recently. I caused it myself by the way I did an
intellimerge in Legacy, (long story), anyway someone gave me SQL code

tomorrow, maybe not early, but it should work.

Thx!

These "thank you, it worked" messages do need to go to the entire list. How else would the rest of
the list know that the proferred solution worked? This helps in future inquiries re: the same
problem, reducing list clutter far more that a "Thank you, it worked" message.

Hi, Darlene,

I'm not sure if it was really a false alarm? I had nearly the same
problem. When I clicked in the Index on a certain name an absolutely
different name opened. I tried it again and again. Always the same. Both
names were really existant. Everything was linked properly. I tried it
from father to daughter - it worked properly. I tried it again in the
Index - it didn't work. Both people had more than one partner. I suppose
it started going wrong after I merged families. Nothing helped, no
restarting, no repairing. So I deleted the one person, who opened false.
And typed she again. Then it worked.
That was not the first time that things like that happened. And I'm afraid
that there could be something wrong in Legacy??? Now I can't be really
sure, if there ist everything allright in my dates. Or did I do things
wrong??

Any ideas from anybody?
