Re: [LegacyUG] Index View and Name List Width Problem

2007-06-22 Thread kb
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Actually, my first move with
the Index View columns was to hover looking for live edges, corners and
column separators, but I didn't find anything. I just rechecked that
and found an inner boundary near the left edge which gave me a short,
double headed horizontal arrow with a centered, vertical bar. It didn't
do squat horizontally, but when I dragged it vertically, it expanded the
lines so that I now have only four filling the screen. That's not
reversible either, as the icon has changed to a short, right pointing
arrow which does nothing. I have no column headings, so I can't double
click them. I suspect that the best advice to date is corrupt usr files
but, with all due respect for Microsoft supporters, this feels
disturbingly like all those years of bitter experience since they first
started destabilizing CP/M.

Thanks again everybody who replied,

kb

I'm using De Luxe Legacy 6 v 6.0.0.133 under XP.

The Index View is useless, because I get only slightly more than one
column displayed per page. The slider control for pan seems to detent
to each column, precluding smooth motion. Options doesn't help,
Customize columns affects only content and Zoom only text size within
the same width columns. Am I missing some general screen controls
somewhere else?

As default, the Name List window opened as somewhat less than a half
screen on the left. It did, however, have the standard top right,
triple button with line, Square/tiled square and X icons, offering
expansion to full screen. Accordingly, I used the center button,
successfully, but the full screen version lacks the triple button, so
there's no obvious way to reverse that, and the condition persists
through rebooting. This seems perhaps a trappy inconvenience deserving
of a bug report, even if reversal is possible with but minor effort. I
haven't reinstalled with deletion of the Legacy folder, but is there any
way short of that to fix this?

Thanks for any help or suggestions,

Re: [LegacyUG] Index View and Name List Width Problem

2007-06-22 Thread Carl Cox

<>

If you hover your mouse over an edge of any window that is not full screen,
the mouse pointer turns into a double ended arrow. When you click at that
point, you can drag the window to any size you wish. The lower right corner
has some dots or diagonal lines, indicating that if you put your mouse
there, you can resize both the right edge and the bottom at the same time.
If you put your mouse pointer in the blue bar at the top of the window you
can move the window anywhere, even nearly off of the screen.

Using these techniques, you can size a text document to fill half the
screen, and Legacy to fit in the remaining half, and then copy information
from the text file to Legacy, as an example, without having to print out or
remember the info.

On the index view, you can resize the columns the same way - put your mouse
over the dividing line you want to move, in the very top row, and the
pointer changes to a double arrow with a line in the middle. When the line
between the arrows is over the line you want to move, click and drag the
line. You have complete control over the line spacing and also the content
of each column. When I want to know which people I have contacted, I have
the phone number show. Most often birth and death dates are most useful.

Sometimes it takes a while to learn all the goodies that Bill Gates has put
in Windows. I am still learning.

RE: [LegacyUG] Index View and Name List Width Problem

2007-06-22 Thread Jack Earnshaw
With regard to Index View, I agree there are problems. In particular that
the initial width of the columns is far too great and it is quite a slog to
get them back to a sensible size. It's the same with Descendant View. Each
column seems to be the width of the screen and so each column has to be
re-sized one at a time (double clicking the header row). But at least it
doesn't seem to crash out as it used to a few versions ago.

As for Name List, I don't have the problem you see. The three buttons -
minimise, restore down/maximise and close are all there (minimise is greyed
out but the other two work fine. I can "maximise" the screen and the buttons
are still there and so I can take the list back to a smaller window again.

Maybe one of your "usr" files is corrupt, perhaps others could advise which
one needs to be deleted

In the Index view, the columns are adjustable just link in MS Excel.
Hoover over the verticle column line between two fields, e.g., Full
Name & Birth Name,
then your cusor will change shapes and you can drag and drop the
column size to what every you want. By doing this, I can see6 columns
without much loss of data:
(Full Name, Birth, Birth Place, Death Date, Death Place, & Marriage -
Data/Place)

Try it, you may like it.

I use it to quickly see who does not have a Birth or Death date and

RE: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships for both spouses

2007-06-22 Thread Jack Earnshaw
Thanks to all who suggested this solution. Seems to be the best (or only)
one at present. Now, if I can remember how to change the releationship from
9th cousin 5 times removed for my son into ??? for me I'll be happy. Except
that the solution doesn't tell me if the connection is to me or my wife, and
with several duplicate surnames I can still get in a muddle. There again I
am usually in a muddle anyway.

I think I will add a "suggestions" entry to see if anything materialises

In my experience there are often many conflicting birth dates and
sometimes no real way to know the correct one. Just because your
cousin has a date that conflicts with other dates doesn't mean that
she did her research poorly.

Sara Binkley Tarpley

And even if it WAS done poorly, how many other family members will have
enough genealogical research savvy to pick up on that, rather than just
assume she hadn't discovered the more accurate information *yet*? Certainly
I have changed dates and places in my database as more information became
available. Genealogy is always a work in progress.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-22 Thread Dermot McGlone

Mitch,

That's a good point re the surety level. I do do that, but forgot to
mention it.

Dermot.

Kim et al,
   Then when you cite this
source include the Surety Level. In your case since you aer not sure, I'd
give it a zero or a "1". "Zero" means you have not yet decided and a "one"
means you have marginal evidence.

I've added a 'disproven birth' event, in which I put the dates which I
know is false, and source it with the correct source. In that way I have
a
research record. I must add that I don't print out events in reports,
but
use them as basis for the Notes section where I put everything I want to

print out. I will have to type most of the info twice, but I get the
wording I want, and the option to exclude what I want.

Regards,

André
