RE: [LegacyUG] backup methods & problems

2007-07-14 Thread Jan Roberts
OK Arnie,

Try this.

1. Open Legacy
2. Go to File
3. Select Backup Multimedia files
4. You will see a new, small window with the title Backup Multimedia files
to: and it should have in the Save in box the folder Data
5. Give the backup file a name – eg. Familyfilename multimedia 15.7.07 (i.e
the name that appears in the top of the screen when you open Legacy +
multimedia + today’s date) Click SAVE
• Legacy will find all of the pictures you have attached to people and or
sources – even if they happen to be in different folders on your computer.
• Warning! – Legacy will ‘zip’ these files, which means it compacts them so
they don’t take up as much room as the originals. If at some point you do
need to use these files because something happens to the originals, or
because you want to add them to a Legacy family file on a different computer
you will have to ‘unzip’ them. There are a number of free zip / unzip
programs available on the internet. (I use Zip Genius because it is
genuinely free for personal use – here’s the link HYPERLINK
"http://www.download.com/ZipGenius/3000-2250_4-10460064.html"http://www.down
load.com/ZipGenius/3000-2250_4-10460064.html)
6. To save the backup file to your “E” drive you need to open “C” Drive,
find the Legacy > Data folder then copy the zip file you have just made to
“E” drive. I am assuming you have Windows XP (or perhaps Vista) in which
there is inbuilt CD writing software. You can use it to write to either a
CD or DVD – depending on how big the files are.

Cheers,
Jan

OK, this is what I did and was not able to copy the picture folder. I went

hi Arnie,
Jan's message may have solved your problem, if not, then i think the experts
will need some more detail as to how you are trying to do the backup. either a

Hi Mike,
Sorry I can't comment on the error message you are getting.

I prefer to separate program and data files. It's the data files
which can helpfully be kept on a USB drive when you're using two
computers regularly.

Unless you're running special programs which enable you to install a
program to your USB drive (I've never done that but understand it can
be done), just keep your data and Multimedia on your USB drive. There
should be enough room even if you have lots of pictures attached to
Legacy as you should have smaller versions of your pics attached to
Legacy rather than archive sized ones. If you think there isn't
enough room or your USB drive picks up a different drive letter on
each computer, keep the MM on both computers *in the same folder
structure* on the same lettered drive. (eg - if your User Name on one
computer is Mike and on the other Michael - don't keep them in My
Docs as the path will be different).

It doesn't matter where you keep your multimedia files attached to
Legacy however it simplifies life if they're not mixed up with
multimedia files not attached to Legacy.
I keep mine in subfolders to a folder called Legacy Pictures.
I happen to like to keep all similar files together so this folder is
in My Pictures.

If you shift the pictures that are attached, you'll have to tell
Legacy where to find them again. You don't have to reattach them. You
need to use the Options > Customise - locations tab - Test all
multimedia paths button and find one file in each folder you have used.

Cheers,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Deciding to add images to source, event, individual picture gallery or marriage picture gallery

2007-07-14 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
You have some choices to make.
1. Filing/naming system. Photos individual or group
with cropping to individual. Name first, last or last,
first. Documents separate files or intermixed.
documents government vs personal mixed.
Decide which types are always going to be done the
same (documents all found in events or source or
individual photos). I/we could recommend a choice but
you won't like it later.

[LegacyUG] Report descendant chart with pictures

2007-07-14 Thread José Mariz
I'm new to Legacy (Deluxe, 6.0).

I've been trying to add some pictures to individual records. Legacy seems
not to recognize .tiff format so I used .jpeg and it seemed OK.

However, when I try to print a descendant chart with these pictures, Legacy
give me an error message ”Error 10002. LEAD error: Invalid bitmap handle”.
Worse, it stops running; I'm obliged to shut it down through Windows Task
Manager.

I'm certainly missing something, can I get some help on this?
Anyhow, is it normal that this beginner's mistake causes Legacy to hang up
like this?

I'd appreciate some help.

It has been a long time since I did anything in Access, but it is my
understanding you can open your family .fdb file with Access (open a
copy,
not the original file). Access should allow you to export a table to an

Excel spreadsheet, or build a query and export those results to a
spreadsheet.

I don't think you'll be able to do it without Access or another database

product that opens Access files.

Re: [LegacyUG] I am wanting to create a spreadsheet from info in Legacy

2007-07-14 Thread Karl Plenge

I now want to export some information to a spreadsheet - how do I do
this please before I tear my hair out.

It has been a long time since I did anything in Access, but it is my
understanding you can open your family .fdb file with Access (open a copy,
not the original file). Access should allow you to export a table to an
Excel spreadsheet, or build a query and export those results to a
spreadsheet.

I don't think you'll be able to do it without Access or another database
product that opens Access files.

be able to attach these to people in Legacy. Is there a way to do that?

Julie,
This is going to sound weird - but go to the picture files for the person
- click you want to add a SOUND file. When the window opens - click the
down arrow by sound files and pick all files. Now add the .pdf file - I do
it all the time and it does work. (Told you it was strange!)

RE: [LegacyUG] Error 530

2007-07-14 Thread Jack Earnshaw
Ellaine

First of all - can you run Legacy on the desktop? forget about loading in
your file, just try to open the program
If it will run, then try to create a new, blank family tree and add a few
random people
- you may need to change a setting in Options to start this - In
Options/Customise on the "General" Tab, choose "always prompt for starting
family". When Legacy starts up you can cancel from the file select and
create a new file.
After you have created the entries. Close Legacy and then reopen it and
select the file you created.

The idea of this is to make sure Legacy is installed OK on the machine.

After that then it depends, as others have asked, whether you have copied
the data files or done a backup - hence the word "restore" in your question.
The easiest way to copy the file is to back it up from within Legacy to the
Desktop and then copy the "zip" file to a thumb drive.
On the desktop copy the zip file from the thumb drive to the desktop. Right
click the icon for the file on the desktop and select properties and make
sure that Readonly is not ticked
Go into Legacy, cancel from the file open prompt, and do a file/restore
family file - selecting the backup file from the desktop as the input

If you can get it working then there are other things to consider copying
over - multi media files (photos) , more settings files to save having to
recreate them. But this is a secondary issue to getting the thing working in
the first place.

How are you getting the info from the laptop? Is it on a network or a
CDRom. The reason for asking is that copying files to CD and then trying to
access them on another machine tends to give grief as they are readonly. If
the file is on a CD then copy to the hard disk, change to Read/write (using
file/propertie) and then try to use it.

If you are accessing the file across a network, do you have full access
to the remote directory? Google searches for "Access Error 530" suggest that
the problem is to do with Network Access Permissions

IMHO, it seems that Tish is unaware of the standard
'definition' of a Family Group sheet is. It consists
of a couple, and the children they have created
together, frequently in a marriage situation. Children
from two or more 'unions', though living together in a
blended family, do not belong in the same family group
sheet. This is not a moral or legal issue, as much as
a 'logical' issue. There is no love in logic, nor
logic in love! I have done the natural parents of my
adopted children. The kids have two sets of parents.
Is that logical? Do I care
Just understand that this program, as all computers
and programs, run on logic.
I hope this is clearer.
Rich in LA CA

You contradict yourself here. If the kids have two sets of parents then they
can show up on multiple FGS, with their natural parents as biological
offspring and on yours as adopted. If you and your wife also have natural
children, the blended set of children will all be included on your FGS, only
the differing relationships will be specified.

[LegacyUG] Deciding to add images to source, event, individual picture gallery or marriage picture gallery

2007-07-14 Thread Melanie Tucker

Would someone give me a quick run down of the pros and cons of attaching
images to sources, events, individual picture gallery or marriage picture
gallery. Sometimes I'm not sure where to attach an image.

Also, I've noticed that when I have images in the picture gallery, the
picture frame becomes colored. When I add images to sources, the picture
frame becomes half colored. Is there any way to tell if I've added images
to sources for an individual or marriage? Sometimes I find myself adding
images to the picture gallery or events when I've previously already added
them as a source.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Undelivered Mail

2007-07-14 Thread Evert van Dijken

I sometimes get such an undelivered mail notification (haven't seen
this for the LUG in a long time), but in this notification normally
also is a statement that says how long your provider will keep on
trying to deliver this message.
If, after a couple of days (4 days for my provider), it still cannot
be delivered you'll get another message, with something like
"permanent failure to deliver ...".
But of course different providers different rules and messages.
