RE: [LegacyUG] Report options not responding
Thank you Cathy and Mark for your help. Deleting the desc.usr file worked. This is very helpful list and I have learnt a lot about using Legacy and other genealogy related issues by sitting quietly in the background and reading the posts. Regards Anne -Original Message- Hi Anne, With Legacy closed, use Windows Explorer or My Computer to go to the Legacy Program file (the default is C:\Legacy - if you haven't used the default you'll know how to find files) try deleting desc.usr if you are referring to the Descendant Chart report - the one on the Descendant Tab or descend.usr if you are referring to the Descendant Book report or descnarr.usr if you are referring to the Descendant Narrative report. Since it happened when you were creating a book, you may like to delete book.usr as well. These .usr files hold your report settings and will be recreated with the default values if they are deleted. Hope this works - if not, get back to us and we'll think again, Cathy At 01:02 PM 28/07/2007, you wrote: I am having problems with accessing report options. Re: [LegacyUG] opening Legacy 5.0 deluxe version
Hi Unita, You can run both Legacy 5 and Legacy 6 on the computer at the same time but they must be installed in different folders. It sounds as if you installed version 6 over the top of version 5 and then, without uninstalling, reinstalled version 5 over the top of version 6. Is that what you did? If so, you now have a folder with a mix of version 5 and version 6 files. I think you'll need to uninstall version 5, delete all non data files from your Legacy folder and then reinstall version 5. I think this will give you a working version of 5 though it will probably leave some bad/dead registry entries. It might be better (and easier for you) to uninstall version 5. Reinstall version 6. Uninstall version 6 and then Reinstall version 5. If that doesn't get you back to where you were with a useable copy of Legacy, I suggest you contact Support direct: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cheers, Cathy At 01:55 PM 28/07/2007, you wrote: Hi, I had 5.0 Deluxe version. RE: [LegacyUG] Correctly entering adopted children - and then some
I am the mother of four adopted children and in only two cases do I know the name of the birth mother. In Australia the adopted parents surname is the child's legal name. It is only now possible to get the birth mothers surname BUT the child has to apply and pay for $100-$150 for the original birth certificate to get this information. HOW DO I ENTER THIS ONE. No 1 child by his second wife has a set of twins by IVF he having provided the sperm and his wife's' sister providing the egg. Can Legacy cope with this situation ? You have to choose whether to use the birth name as the main name and the adopted name as an AKA or the other way around. If the person was adopted as a babe, I'd use the adopted name as the main name as this is the name that most records will be in - however I think the rules would say to use the birth name as the main name. That way the displays are full-size and data can be copy/pasted from one to another. Most recently graphics cards have provisions for two monitor connections, and setup in their software to support either two separate displays, or a stretched version of a single window that extends across the two monitors. Once the two monitors have been set up, you can drag a minimized display of an application from one screen to the other, then maximize it to fill the screen (displays of applications can't be dragged screen-to-screen when maximized). Check the output jacks on your graphics card. If there are two (usually a VGA 15-pin D jack and a DVI 24-pin jack, or 2 DVI jacks), then the card can probably handle two monitors simultaneously. DVI jacks come in about four varieties from 24 to 29 pins. Read your graphics card monitor on how to set up the software. Re: [LegacyUG] Correctly entering adopted children - and then some
Wow, that is an interesting one So my understanding is that the couple had twins the babies were conceived by IVF, but the husband had provided the sperm, and the wife's sister provided the egg, but the wife carried the children? I would enter the husband and wife as biological parents. I would create a new parent status of egg or sperm doner (or 2 status's egg doner, sperm doner.) I would then setup a relationship between the husband and the wife's sister - setting the marriage status as never married. The add the children to that couple, setting the parent status to egg doner for the wife's sister. Then if you adopted these children (as it sounded) I'd add them to your family, and set the parent statuses to adopted parent. Then I would add a cazillion notes explaining it in case it isn't clear. That is the cool thing about Legacy - you can figure out how to do lots of things! HOW DO I ENTER THIS ONE. Re: [LegacyUG] For those thinking about jumping ship to FTM
There is a beta groupfor FTM 2008. And most of them are very unhappy. I've owned and used every version of FTM, but I'm not buying the new version. In addition to the problems noted, there is no way to sort chdilren or spouses. They have to be entered in order of birth or marriage or you're out of luck. There are no register reports. The book feature doesn't semm to offer as much as previous versions. After unsubscribing from the beta list and deleting FTM 2008, I bought Legacy and I'm very happy with version 6.0 and this mailing list. The program boasts it can import Legacy files. I'm sure this will be one of the major marketing points when the program is released. YOU WILL LOSE DATA on conversion. It flat out does not work as note fields are not mapped and you will get no warning whatsoever concerning this. So if you are one of those folks like me that likes to use note fields you will lose all that data on conversion. This would not have been that hard for the FTM programmers to do since anyone can basically open their Legacy database up and look at the structure of it. Quite disappointing. Another thing that has not been fixed since FTM originated is that FTM inserts leading 0's in an individual's id number. This has been a sore point for years to those that convert their gedcoms to such programs as TNG which I use on the web. Legacy shines when it comes to exporting gedcoms regarding this matter. I actually thought about purchasing FTM just to import Ancestry.com files and sources into my database then back to Legacy. Since FTM is very buggy and it rejects Legacy's note fields without warning I will not go that route. FTM has a long way to go yet and it is planned to be release August. I can pretty much guarentee these bugs will not be worked out as I have searched and searched for some kind of beta users group to discuss such matters --it is non-existent it appears or I am just not in the know. Instead when I post a question about the program on the FTM forums, I get noob answers about checking my internet connection..sigheven after informing that person I code for hobby and ate punchcards, Cobol, and fortran for breakfast when starting out--I still got dumb responses. With that--if you consider yourself a user of somewhat expertise.you will not get much help from the forums unless you are a total noob in which you will probably become frustrated. Again let me digress back to the the Ancestry.com file imports--great concept but it is a whole lot quicker for me to cut and paste from ancestry.com into Legacy without having to worry about overwriting sources in FTM. FTM does not keep track of which ancestry.com files you downloaded and it's sources without having to back out of a couple of menus and make sure you are not overwriting any source data you correctly have or to duplicate a source. This may not make sense to you unless you try the beta then you will understand what I mean. The GUI of FTM is nicely laid out and does not have a clunky visual basic look to it--I would like to see Legacy have a similar layout. Sourcing - FTM has never been strong on being able to source logically. This version is a little better but still has a long way to go. For sourcing I always liked the way Ultimate Family Tree sourced. (program eventually killed by those who own FTM). Legacy does a good job letting a user easily fix a source if entered in error. FTM is a very large program weighing in at around 380 MB uncompressed. Most likey because of the GUI and nice graphics. The underlying database engine appears to be the same along with all the same bugs that have always plagued database programs that run under Windows. Legacy has the same issues as well since most Windows genealogy programs are a slave to the Windows FoxPro engine. To wrap up--the new FTM may look prettier, but Legacy has stronger features for those who are serious about sourcing. I'm not big into reports as I dump all my data to my web site so I can not address this. Thank you very much Heather. I wonder how long it took you to work that one out. Many thanks. Regards from Valerie in sunny Sydney. No 1 child by his second wife has a set of twins by IVF he having provided the sperm and his wife's' sister providing the egg. Can Legacy cope with this situation ? [LegacyUG] Entering custody of a child
Hello, LegacyUserGroup Listers I have an interesting problem and I would apreciate any help. My daughter has custody of a child as a favour to the Family Court of Australia, he is not related to her in any way. He has been with her since March this year (2007) and we do not know if and when he will go back to his mother, again no relation to my daughter. The child was stepson to my son in a now broken up defacto relationship. My question is this, has anybody any suggestions on documenting this child in her family. I know this is not strictly genealogy but it is Family History. Thanks in anticipation Laurence E Stephenson, [EMAIL PROTECTED] 29-07-07 Laurence E Stephenson.vcf Description: Binary data
Re: [LegacyUG] For those thinking about jumping ship to FTM
And the answer could have been found in 0.09 seconds by Googling BYU Family History Conference. It is really easy to fall into the habit of using email lists to try and get answers to every question, but effective use of search engines is often a lot faster than typing out an email and waiting for a reply. Google is usually my first choice when looking for information, then I post a query if I can't find my question already answered.
