Re: [LegacyUG] Research guidance Legacy entries

2007-07-31 Thread Barb Weed
Jim, I agree fully. The fact that you must close all secondary windows in a
split screen before you can go to the other side of the screen makes the split
impossible to use for editing and adding to other people. This seems to be
true even if you open completely seperate files. This one drawback, to me,
makes the split almost useless. Can something be done about this little problem?

But as soon as you open a secondary window in either view you can't
open a window in the other view. For example open an Individuals
Information and you can go to the other view and do anything. So you
still end up having to close the secondary window or if you go another
layer down two windows. I would like split screen to operate as two
independent instances.

This IMHO is a big weakness in legacy. You can not change from one
window dialog to another. You have to close them. Thus you have to go
through this additional step of the copy paste/copy paste.

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting to a new Legacy Family File, what to expect?

2007-07-31 Thread Heather Stovold
Ok - I haven't ever had to do this - but I am talking as a computer
programmer (not on this program) and using that background to think of what
you may or may not lose. this may or may not be right

I think you would be unlikely to lose any of the real data including the
events. (if you did, it would be a definate bug) - and I include
sources in that.
I think you would be unlikely to lose any of the program preferances and
settings - things that stay the same no matter what database you use. Not
sure if that includes the report settings but would include stuff like
background colors, and stuff like that.

It is the stuff that is kind of in-between that you might lose. You've
said that you lost the bookmarked people, and I could imagine that. I also
don't know if this is the case or not, but you might have lost any tag
settings as well? Maybe stuff you have setup in the research guidance?

This is all speculation though - so I guess all I can say is keep the old
one as a backup for a while, and do some looking at your new database for
areas that you might be concerned about... (like if you are worried about
events, then check someone that had events.)

Hope this helps a little bit

Something that I hate... each time you export to a new Legacy file, you lose
the Last Modified information for each person. Your new Legacy file will
show your Modified Date and Added Date as of the day of your export. In

I have a question. For over six months I've had that 3021 error (about a
missing To Do Item) while doing file check/repair, so I figured I had finally
better export my file to a new Legacy file. I followed the directions, and made
sure to include all my private info. I also made sure to import my incoming
event definitions. I did select to renumber RINs from 1, but it didn't change
any of my RINs! (Maybe because they were already all in use?)

What I am wondering is, what will change when I start using this new family

You will need both pieces of information if you were to actually find the
record in the National Archives which is the primary source. I list
Ancestry.com as the repository. Ancestry likes to muddy the waters by adding
their name to everything when all they are is a repsitory and not the
primary source.

Some may not consider this proper, but since Ancestry is a for profit
sourceI find it better to list the original source if future generations
need to find it. Ancestry may go out of business someday the National
Archives shouldn't :).

Your primary source would be:

World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918.
Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582
rolls.

The detail of the source would be:

RegistrationLocation: Lake County, Illinois; Roll: 1614032; Draft Board: 2

When it prints out you will get something like:

World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918.
Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582

Subject: [LegacyUG] Advice on entering source information

Hi all. I'm new to Legacy and am having some trouble entering my source
information, despite looking at examples I've found on the internet.

For example, I found cemetery records on the Waupaca county, Wisconsin
GenWeb site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwaupac/). It is part of the
WIGenWeb, which in turn is part of the USGenWeb project. The Waupaca site is
maintained by Paula Vaughan.

On the Cemeteries page it says, The Waupaca County cemeteries were read by
Wayne and Alta Guyant in the 1970's. The Guyant Collection includes a
general index which also includes veteran and maiden names with each
cemetery of Portage, Waupaca and Waushara Counties and have been
mircofilmed. You may be able to obtain the microfilm through your local
library and the interlibrary loan system OR your local Family History
Library. The information following each cemetery under the heading of
Microfilm Information gives you the Family History Library number of the
film on which the said cemetery is listed.

If I then go to my cemetery of interest, Lakeside Memorial Park, it states,
Thank you to the City of Waupaca for permitting the Lakeside Memorial Park
sexton records to be posted. This listing is complete through 2005.

The information for the people I'm researching is all there, which I do
understand will go into the Detail section of the source citation - however,
that's getting ahead of myself!

When I create a new Master Source in Legacy, what information goes where?

For example:

Source List Name Wisconsin, Waupaca County GenWeb

Type Internet

AuthorPaula Vaughan

Title Waupaca County, Wisconsin History and
Genealogical Website (italicise)

Publication facts http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwaupac/

OR.is the transcription from the cemetery the focus of the source, and the
repository is the Waupca GenWeb?

Next, I'm a wee bit confused about citing information I find at
Ancestry.com. For example, I found a record and the scanned image for a WWI
draft registration card. Under the details for the individual it says:

Source Citation: Registration Location: Lake County, Illinois; Roll:
1614032; Draft Board: 2.

It then says:

Source Information:

Ancestry.com. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database
on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original
data: United States, Selective Service System. World War I Selective Service
System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. Washington, D.C.: National
Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582 rolls.

Again, in Legacy, what is the focus of the source and where does all this
information go?

Any specific examples would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,

Christine

RE: [LegacyUG] Exporting to a new Legacy Family File, what to expect?

2007-07-31 Thread Sherry/Support
I talked with Ken about this. When you export to a new Family File you’ve
just created a *new* file so of course the program would recognize the
entries as new.

Of course, a new file wouldn’t have a history list or bookmarks

I understand the frustration of losing this if the export is necessary, but
I also understand the concept that a *new* file has been created!

We don't recommend this process lightly and sometimes there is no other way
for the damaged file to be repaired.

Earlier today, I wondered the same thing. To learn the answer, click on the
first added-link at the bottom of any email; that brings you to the Legacy
web site. Then click on Downloads and select Download Update. Click here to
see the Complete Revision
Historyhttp://www.legacyfamilytree.com/RevisionHistory6.asp
brings you to the changes made in each update including this latest build,
found on this web site: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/RevisionHistory6.asp

It lists: 28 July 2007 - Build

*IGI Search* - Added a new BEPSC column which will show up for LDS users.
It represents Baptism, Endowment, Sealing to Spouse, Sealing to parents, and
Sealing of current persons Children to them.

*Screen Size* - For first time users the default screen size was quite small
for people with larger monitors. We now open Legacy to fill most of the
screen.

*Standard Edition* - We have added a comment to the Descendant view about it
being a Deluxe Edition only feature. It was totally blank and people thought
it wasn't working.

*Timelines* - Added a French Government timeline. Contributed by Claude
Georges.

*Timelines* - Updated the Canada Prime Ministers timeline.

What do you mean, fill or occupy the entire screen?

Why would a first time user want Legacy to open differently than a second
time user?

How did the update destroy your screen layout? Are you referring to
Legacy
opening in a larger window? That's a simple thing to adjust and more
people
complain about Legacy opening too small than it opening too large!

Once you've set the Legacy window to the size and location you want, it
will
hold that size and position from then on.

I know all that! Destroy was probably too strong a word. It changed what
I had carefully set up and had been using for a couple of years, into
something that occupied most of the screen. Just like it said it would
on the box. It didn't ask. It just did it. That's probably fine for
those with bad eyesight, but not for me. The thing that I'm really
moaning about is, I don't think that should have happened to an
installation that has been there for years! New installations - yes.
Existing - DEFINITELY NOT!

Helen,

For Plain Text in Outlook Express for *all* emails to a particular address
eg LUG then go to the name in your address book and under the Name tab there

Re: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

Helen,

Wendy and Jack already answered most of your questions. When any email is
sent, it has to have routing information. Consider the full header sort of
like a mailing address, return address, and information about what language
and type of script is being used.

Your full header looks like this:

Received: from mail.legacyfamilytree.com ([209.139.208.142])
 by sccrmxc19.comcast.net (sccrmxc19) with ESMTP
 id 20070731203146s1900iphjee; Tue, 31 Jul 2007 20:31:46 +

As you can see, there is a lot of technical stuff that most people never
need to worry about. Pertaining to your second question, you will need to
refer to the help file for Outlook or top someone else on this list as I do
not use Outlok and cannot give you specific information. In Outlook Express
there are settings that control the format for sent messages for email and
newsgroups, and there is an additional option to Reply to messages using
the format in which they were sent.

If I had that option checked, then even though messages *I* created would be
in plain text, if I received an HTML message and clicked reply, it would
stay as HTML.

If you ever want to know what program someone is using, simply look at the
full header. The x-mailer will state the program. Pat is using Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138.
