RE: [LegacyUG] Family File and Sources

2007-08-25 Thread smuggler
Hi Cathy

Thank you for your response. The source detail is annoying not crucial as
you say - it is just annoying to see someone born say 1857 and have a
recorded date of 1653 - obviously an error - Sherry and I could not find any
conflict, the closest we got was me picking up that some of the dates were
those of other family people completely unrelated and not recorded at the
same or a similar time. Just my tidy mind that I find it annoying. But
have let it go since our last cleanup so will continue to do so.

In terms of the Master sources I have merged all duplicates but picked up
quite a few where I have not completely detailed the sources, hence my main
question.

You have given me some good ideas to pursue and will tackle that way. Thank
you for your assistance.

Anne

Re: [LegacyUG] Family File and Sources

2007-08-25 Thread Cathy

Hi Anne,
Is it the Master Source you are unhappy with or the Source Detail?

Master Sources are best "tidied up" through the Master Source List.
There you can identify whether you have two source listings for the
same source and combine them.
You can also edit them to make them more consistent and easier for
other people to understand which source you have used and where to
find it for themselves - or which person holds the Family Bible or
Grandfather's diary etc.

To check Source Detail, I'd tag a Master source or group of Master
Sources and run the Source Report making sure I included the RIN so I
can easily identify the right person and then go in and edit the ones
I wasn't happy with.

I'm not sure what your problem is with the date. Do you have a clash
between the way your computer is set up for dates and your default
date setting in Legacy? Is that somehow messing up the date recorded?
I understand that it's best to use the same order of day, month, and
year for both but can't recall why.

If your problem is just with the Recorded Date - I'd simply ignore
it. It's useful but not crucial to have that.

Yes you can export your file without Sources with a Gedcom export -
but that is a very bad way of cleaning up sources. You'd have to
start over completely. It's much, much, much easier to enter sources
as you enter data than to come back and enter sources later.

My question is I really want to tidy up my sources - I am very happy with
80% of them but it is the other 20% I want to tidy. My file has 8022 people

Can I export my Legacy file without the sources? Seems this would be a hard
way to fix the 20%.

Can I export my file without the date recorded in source detail as I have
found that no matter the date I enter, I end up with amazingly obscure dates
in this field.

Sherry has kindly helped me to clean this up twice but it seems to start all
over again (I always enter the date I record without fail by pressing the
"today's date" button)

Is there an easier way to clean up my sources?

Re: [LegacyUG] Family File and Sources

2007-08-25 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
IMHO, the best way, not the quick fix, is to tag
everyone in the DB, look at each person. If completely
perfect remove the tag. Do not do any fixing at this
point, just see what is already good. Is the problem
actually the date recorded or is actual data
corrupted?
Or change the 'bad dates' to an obvious error eg:
1/1/1980 or 1/1/2050. Then you can fix them at a
leisurely pace while adding new stuff at the same
time. Use the 'search modified date =' I hope I
understand the request.

Assuming you both have high speed connections, if
one of you uses an ISP that
gives you that much online space, one of you could
ftp it up, and the other
could ftp it down.

I also believe Yahoo has removed their restriction
on file size, so you could
create a Yahoo email account. One of you could send
to it, the other could open
it and download the attachment. You would want to
keep the old emails deleted
out as a consideration to Yahoo so you don't clog up
their whole server! Some
of the other webmails may also have no size limits,

I don't know.

There are also file splitting programs available
online, but I've never used so
can't recommend one.

Finally, particularly if you don't both have high
speed, you could burn a CD of
your present contents and snail mail that, then just
email each other new files
as you acquire them to incrementally synchronize
your holdings.

I just listened to Myrt's interview with Goeff and would like to know if
the Ver. 7 documentation templates will be compatible with Ver. 6 entry forms.
As usual, I've procrastinated and now have a HUGE stack of things to enter.
Should I do it now in Ver. 6 or hold off for Ver. 7 "some time this fall"? Or
is this one of those unanswerable questions?

Will the file calls for documents be improved? What formats? B,m,d &
census images, etc should be called and handled differently than grandpa's face
photos. Before I scan/convert them, it should be to something useful and
compatible.

Will Notes displays and printouts be the same in Ver. 7. It took a while
in Ver. 6 for my head to grasp which would show and where and which would not.

Thanks - really looking forward to the next version. I own two other
genealogy programs and like Legacy best.

The UID and the MRIN are of no use to you to use as the source. The
source of the information contained in the Gedcom is the provider of
the Gedcom. One would hope the such a provider also included sources
within the Gedcom. But unless you do your own research on any facts
contained in the Gedcom, the source you should use is the Gedcom
provided to you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Keeping two databases and their media files in sync

2007-08-25 Thread hwedhlor

Paul,

My understanding of Intelli-Share is that it is designed to allow
researchers to share research issues.

I'm used to working with a collaboration file (the entire database),
kept online by Ancestral Quest, wherein one user of the file is the
administrator, and others access it by permission, password-protected.
Each has their own local copy of the database, and can download the
latest version from the "master" collaboration file. An automatic log
is used to keep track of changes - what they changed and who changed
them, etc. The administrator can cause the database to revert one, or
more steps if alterations are found to be incorrect.

My sister and I feel that Yahoo Instant Messenger should be a simple
solution to sharing media files, but found today that there were
problems with that, probably caused by weather. We'll try again and let
the list know the results. The file we worked with was 37MB. When that
failed we tried sending a few individual photos (which we had done maney
times before without incident), and they also failed to transfer entirely.

You could always copy your media files to another folder outside Legacy,

split it into several folders and then only share the changes. Otherwise,
and ftp would be the simplest, I think. I would be interested to know,
because I have a relative that I work closely with on our family.

When in the descendant tab, click on the printer on the right hand side
of the screen. A "Descendant Chart" panel will appear with a number of
printing options. Select the options you desire, then press the print
button on the top right corner of the descendant chart options. (Note:
I tend to select "preview" prior to printing--just in case.) Hope this
helps.

Thanks for the info about slides degrading; one more thing on the ToDo List.
I didn't realize they were so ephemeral.

Negatives will also, and if you have a lot of those, you would want to see if
the scanner(s) you're considering will accept the format of negatives you have.
If you only have a few, it might be more economical to just take them somewhere
that will digitize them and choose your scanner only with slides in mind.

I just bought one of those specifically to do slides and have absolutely
loved
the results, although the software is a little quirky and you have to figure
out
how to get it to do what you want.

I asked the manager of the CompUSA where I bought it if he had anyone who
was a
guru on scanners, because I had narrowed down to this one, a Canon, and two
HP's, but didn't know which one to go with. This guy, who runs a graphic
arts
business on the side, said go with the Epson.

If anyone out there has slides, I would urge you to pick up a scanner (the
good
ones for doing slides are down to the $200 range now) and get them digitized
as
they will degrade over time. A few of the oldest of my Dad's had a few
holes in
them (1940's or 50's, not sure which). The colors also will eventually
degrade.
Once they are digitized, although your medium (CD's or whatever you store
them
on) may degrade and you will have to keep them backed up with newer media,
the
image will never degrade from that point.

2007-08-25 Thread Paul A.
I will start by saying that I have never used it, but isn't this what the
Intelli-Share is for?
You could always copy your media files to another folder outside Legacy,
split it into several folders and then only share the changes. Otherwise,
and ftp would be the simplest, I think. I would be interested to know,
because I have a relative that I work closely with on our family.

Karl,

Thanks for those ideas. My ISP does provide that much space, so the FTP
is an option, and we both already have Yahoo e-mail accounts through
which we could transfer. I believe that using the Yahoo Photo Share or
Send File options might also work.

Assuming you both have high speed connections, if one of you uses an
ISP that gives you that much online space, one of you could ftp it up,
and the other could ftp it down.

I also believe Yahoo has removed their restriction on file size, so
you could create a Yahoo email account. One of you could send to it,
the other could open it and download the attachment. You would want
to keep the old emails deleted out as a consideration to Yahoo so you
don't clog up their whole server! Some of the other webmails may also
have no size limits, I don't know.

There are also file splitting programs available online, but I've
never used so can't recommend one.

Finally, particularly if you don't both have high speed, you could
burn a CD of your present contents and snail mail that, then just
email each other new files as you acquire them to incrementally
synchronize your holdings.

Hi Karima,

It's set by Options > Customise - Data Format tab
Living indicator.
You have to choose to use it, then you can choose both background colour
and font colour.

Susan has a "faint box" as her background colour is slightly different
from her Panel colour.
I set the background colour to the panel colour and just have the font a
distinct colour.

It is a Deluxe feature so perhaps you are using Legacy Standard.

Archives use 400 dpi TIF format to scan and preserve their collections. This
has become an acceptable standard. With a TIF you then can reformat it to a
JPEG or PDF to share. You cannot take a JPEG or PDF and change them into a
TIF. So for digitizing your rare photos for archival purposes use TIF. The
JPEG images made from them can be used to link to the Legacy program or
share with others. Believe me you only want to scan your collection once -

RE: [LegacyUG] OT - enhanced viewer on Ancestry

2007-08-25 Thread Janis Gilmore
When I install the advanced viewer, it appears to go smoothly, but when I go
to look at the census page, I get a message that "The Enhanced Image viewer
is not installed on this machine. For the best experience, please click here
to download the Enhanced Image Viewer
or click here to view this image using the Basic Image Viewer."

I have tried saving the download to my desktop and installing it, instead of
running the download. After the installation it gives you the choice of
clicking on "this software didn't install correctly" or "did install
correctly." I have tried clicking that both ways. Nothing seems to install
the viewer.

Again, I am on Windows Vista Business.

I use the enhanced viewer with Vista Home Basic in just regular view
and have not had
any problems.

What kind of problems are you experiencing?

This appears to have come from a Gedcom file. The first part is a
Universal ID for an individual in a Gedcom file. This number can be
produced by Legacy if you choose to do so when you export your data to a
Gedcom file.

The second part:

SLGC: @F171@

is also part of a Gedcom that is related to the family sealing process
of the LDS Church. The @F171@ is the equivalent of MRIN 171. The SLGC is
a Gedcom tag.

Without seeing your data how is anyone to know what you mean by all your

To create a Gedcom click File > Export to.. > GEDCOM File.. Then make

Re: [LegacyUG] Indication of most direct person

2007-08-25 Thread Cathy

Hi June,

Yes you can do that - and it's quite clear what you are asking.

First go to Options > Customise - Data Format Tab
Child List Indicators section

Tick - Direct Line children (in bold).
You may also want to tick to indicate Preferred Child - then you can
have an indication of the child most important to you in other lines as well.

Then, with yourself as the main person in Family View
Go to Tools > Set Direct Line as Preferred.

If you set Direct Lines from other people as well, re do yourself
last - the last set overrides the others where the same family is involved.

I apologise to all subscribers if my subject line is not clear.

Is there anyway to show in the children section who is the most
direct ancestor, For example if I have the screen showing my
paternal grandparents, I have 7 children listed (including my
father). Is there anyway I can make something show which will
indicate that my father is the main person and so on with the other
generations.

Apologies if I haven't explained it very well.

Thank you

June

June,

Navigate to your record so it is highlighted. Click on "Tools" and then
"Set Direct Line as Preferred", make sure your name appears in the box
on the little window that opens and click "Set Preferred Line".
Now, your direct line ancestors should have an asterisk in front of them
on the Family View childrens list.
