Thad,

If you mean globally sort by date, go to File>File
Maintenance>Check/Repair>Proceed and check the box "Sort all events by date"

I know how to sort children and spouses on an individual family basis, but is
there currently a way to globally sort that would eliminate having to look at
each family to perform the task?

Thanks!

You could view or print a 'Potential Problems' list and that will tell you
which sets of children are not sorted.

Re: [LegacyUG] Global Sorting of Children and Spouses

2007-09-29 Thread TH
Thanks for the response, Robert. I understood the implications of such a
global sort, but was curious if it existed in the system. There are a few
families where I know ( or think I know) the order of birth of the children
even though I don't have all the dates. I can work around those and manually
sort the others. The same goes for wives.

Re: [LegacyUG] Writing text

2007-09-29 Thread John S. Adams
I think it would depend on your audience. If it's a book for family, where the
readers know that you wrote it, use the first person. If you're submitting a
book or article for publication in a journal, use the third person. I often
insert my comments in notes followed by something like: "--jsa, 9/29/07." You
might reserve the General Notes field for first person narratives and use the
third person in all Events Notes and Sources. Then you could choose which
notes to print in a Report or Book, depending on the intended readers.

When entering text do people write in the 1st person, or just give facts.

For example - when I write information that my mam has told me about her mam
is it more common to says that 'my mam said that grandma'
or is it more common to say that Pauline Smith said that her mother

I currently use 'my mam said' because although my family history is full of
facts and official data, it is something that I am putting together (with a lot
of enjoyment) for my children and their children.

RE: [LegacyUG] print IGI Match

2007-09-29 Thread Alice McVearry
Hi Frank,
Are you doing the "Search IGI for completed ordinances"? If so, after you
have reviewed the matches and found the right person, with the Family tab
foremost, at the bottom left of the screen you will see a radio button that
says "Update Legacy Spouse," and with the Parents tab foremost you will see
a similar radio button saying "Update Legacy Parents." If you click on the
button the information will be automatically entered into your Legacy file
for that individual. The information should then stick in your family
group sheets. If I have not understood how you got to the IGI Match,
please offer more details. -- Alice

Is it possible to print the IGI Match or move the "Sealed to" info at the
bottom of the IGI Match to the Legacy Match permanently?

I've copied and pasted from the IGI to the Legacy but it doesn't stay when
I try to go to the Family Group Sheet and print it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Global Sorting of Children and Spouses

2007-09-29 Thread Robert Carneal USA
I don't think so. You would think it would be a good idea, but think
about it. What if a family has five children, for whom you know the
birth date for just one?

But you know the order they were born in, so you go to Children's
Settings and manually "order" them up.

Now if you did a Global Children sort, that would change. Any child you
manually sorted because of a missing birth date would be changed to
another order. For one family that you might not know the children's
births of, that is not bad. But if you have hundreds of children, then
it becomes a nightmare to "Undo."

If I'm importing stuff from a Gedcom from my dad, or from my mom I
have the import automatically source it as from a Gedcom (and from
whom) - and it puts it in the Unspecified. That is pretty much my
only use although I think for a few live people that I know I
have put a general "Personal Knowledge of Heather Stovold" in there.
(like, that is an "unspecified" source for my own record in the
program, and for my husband.) - I wouldn't use it generally though,
as it is better to source exactly what information you got from that
source.

I do not know which is more common. I myself use something like "Jennie
Ault (Elizabeth Cunningham's mother) said her mother Elizabeth Morgan
said..." so that other people reading it would know who was who. If my
grandchildren or cousins are reading it, using just "mam:" or "grandma"
could lead to confusion about what person you are quoting.

Pami:

It's not really *necessary* to use the field, it's apparently there for your
convenience if you wish to use it--and I do frequently. One of my most
common uses is to add a general note or comment that I hope will stand out
in my posted GEDCOM. I have a Master Source called "NOTE." Using this, I
might add detail such as "Caution; the Jones family is entered for current
research purposes only and information is entirely speculative except where
specific sources are noted." I do this frequently when beginning to
research a new family group or potential branch. If and when the link is
proven, of course, I remove the note.

This is particularly helpful because I can see a list of those who use that
Master Source and easily keep track of them.

Well, I do. When I use it, I use it to reference something that happened

Going through an old trunk, I find a note saying my gg-grandfather won

While I use it, I make an effort not to.

2007-09-29 Thread TaylorResearch4u
Question for everyone...
Does anyone use the "Unspecified" line (it's the 1st source reference) under
"Assigned Sources" for an individual???
If you do ... for what purpose??? Is it necessary to use???
Thanks for your replies 'n happy hunting ...

[LegacyUG] Cruise - Dick Eastman

Dick Eastman is on the Legacy Cruise and this is his 2nd piece

they do is inconceivable.

RE: [LegacyUG] Census transcription into Legacy's Tex of Source?

2007-09-29 Thread Cathy

Hi Rob,

I believe in transcribing what is there and showing any
interpretation or addition in square brackets which I use sparingly.
I prefer to be very clear what is interpretation even if it's just
filling in the ditto. Dittos are often done in haste and aren't
always correct. The only exception I make is if the ditto carries
over from a previous household but even here it is useful to know
that the original was a ditto, especially if it's your only source
for a place of birth.

For anything unusual/unexpected/contradictory I make a note after the
transcript and/or in the Census Event Notes.

One more question, and I promise to let this thread drop (LOL I know I
wander into OT Land a lot).

When transcribing, do you transcribe as is (all the "'s and do's) or do you
fill in more of what you know? Meaning:

World Ave., William Miller, male/63 years, baker, yes [born in GLS]
" ", Shirley do, female/60 years, do, no [not born in OFX], (blank) [not
born in SCT, IRL, or Foreign Parts]

VS

World Ave., William Miller, male/63 years, baker, yes [born in GLS]
World Ave., Shirley Miller, female/60 years, baker, no [not born in OFX],
(blank) [not born in SCT, IRL, or Foreign Parts]

The second looks cleaner to me (and I do have a scan of the census
attached), while the first is truer to the original document.

Kirsten you've sort of already answered this in a private e-mail, but wanted
to include you too.

Thanks!

Rob

RE: [LegacyUG] Census transcription into Legacy's Tex of Source?

2007-09-29 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Rob:

No, I don't. Showing "do" would be meaningless in a report unless you could
see the entry that it refers to, which could be several families above. I
shortcut the entry a great deal. As a "semi-lumper" my master source would
be, for example, "1851 Canada Census, Ontario." Then on the source
clipboard, in the Source Detail field, I'd list the county, city, page,
etc., ending with "William Miller household, XXX World Ave." On the first
line of the "Actual Source Detail" box, I put "All Miller surname, all born
Upper Canada, all Methodist" or whatever other information they all have in
common. Then I list the family members with their individual information.
Your entry will all vary, of course, depending on which information is
common to all and which is specific to the individual.

This is not exactly the Mills-approved citation format, but it does the job.
(I may change my ways after v7, but with several thousand records in my
database, perhaps I won't.)

I'd recommend entering a couple of census listings in different ways and
then producing a test report to see how you like the results.

Kirsten
