2007-11-09 Thread ronald ferguson

Jenny,

Do not disagree here, I wasn't quite clear as by A Hospital I meant Named
Hospital eg. Guys Hospital rather than a hospital.

The OED is, however, not withstanding John Clare's email, quite clear that one
is born in Hull that is a direct quote from the usage given in my copy of the
2005 Edition - and that is modern enough for me!

I still think that the organisation (whatever it was called) should find
better/more constructive things to do!

[LegacyUG] Saving census images

I download a LOT of census images from HeritageQuest which offers the option

Fowler (Modern English Usage) has something to say on this matter:-
According to the OED at is used 'of all towns except the capital of one's
own country and that in which the speaker dwells, if of any size' ...
in conveys a sense of being physically within whereas at does not. Thus
New

College is in Oxford while the new term starts next week at Oxford.
Since one is normally living at the place where one dies, in would seem
reasonable, except that at would seem better for an institution such as a
Hospital.

Susan,

I have no time for nitpicking organisations no matter how many initials
they have in their name. It is not up to them to tell anybody what sort
of
grammar should be used in their reports. In any event I believe them to
be

wrong - at least as far as English English is concerned.

My advice: ignore them, they might not go away but if they have nothing
better to do, they should!

Subject: [LegacyUG] Prepositions of In and At for locations

I have been editing an RTF generated file (Descendants Book) from Legacy
for the past month, and as I near the end, I am beginning to wonder how
consistent I have been with my prepositions. Legacy's standard report is
to

use the preposition in - i.e. Chris was born in Boston on 1 Aug 1901.

The NEHGS released their 26 Sep 2007 free newsletter, with an article
Research Recommendations: Genealogical Writing: Prepositions. Their
preference is for manuscripts to use the word at (except for
cemeteries)

although they say in is acceptible. Their example is She died at
Brighton, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, 15 March 1809 and was buried at
Boston in King's Chapel Burying Ground.

In my manuscript, I find I only use the preposition at for the
residence
event descriptions (which is automatic with Legacy sentence definition)
and

in for the event location (which is part of the code [InPlace]).

What I am now faced with is where I used places like hospitals or
cemeteries in my locations list, and didn't change the prepositions. I
have

kept in which I think is an accurate description (you are born in a
hospital, not at it). But how can I globally change the use elsewhere by
Legacy of its in prepositions to at? Is there any way?

Well, at least the NEHGS says if you use in to at least keep it
consistent. But I wonder if the use of at is more professional, and if
so,

should Legacy have that option?

I don't mind off-list responses with your opinions, but I don't want to
start a debate on list about which preposition is best! LOL! My questions
which should be addressed on list are (1) is there a way to globally
change

the preposition of in to at in the Locations List, and (2) can Legacy
have the option to use at instead of in in its InPlace definition
and

locations preposition list, if that is a more professional manuscript
standard.

Thank you,
Susan

RE: [LegacyUG] Saving census images

2007-11-09 Thread ronald ferguson

Pat,

A pdf is an Adobe propriety file and unless one has Adobe Acrobat (not Acrobat
Reader) then there isn't anything that one can do with them. I have heard of
some programs which may be able to, but know nothing about them. Even with
Legacy one can only attach them as Video/Sound files.

Hence, if you wish to change the size, for example, then you will need to
download in the tif format. I don't know about Heritage Quest but these can be
quite large; the size, in both pixels and KB, can be reduced by using many
programs eg Irfan View which can also change it to the jpg format. These can be
attached to Legacy Events as pictures.

Pat,

I think you must be looking at Descendant Chart as distinct from Descendants or
Descendant Narrative - the latter two being in the Book Reports.

The Charts do not allow Events but the Reports do. To set the bullets you need
to set the Events in Report OptionsInclude and then go to FormatEvents
Narrative to set the bullets.

From an Australian point of view, to use born at Dalwallinu rather

A publisher (NEHGS in this case) can specify (and potentially enforce) their
preferences for
the documents they handle. The English-speaking world, unlike France, has no
organization whose sole purpose is to keep the language pure.

The differences between British English and other English speakers have been
noted for a
long time - in The Canterville Ghost (1887), Oscar Wilde wrote: `We have really
everything
in common with America nowadays except, of course, language´.

Note that a number of people (Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, even Winston
Churchill,
have been credited with the divided by a common language quote about England
and the
US.

From a US point of view, I think of at when there is an identifiable
location (street address,
landmark) and in when the location is more general (township, etc.). In the
case of a
medical event, there is a difference in whether a child is born in an
ambulance (on the way
to [the] hospital) or at an ambulance (waited much too long).

Massachusetts, 15 March 1809 and was buried at Boston in King's
 Chapel Burying Ground.

In my manuscript, I find I only use the preposition at for the
residence event descriptions (which is automatic with Legacy
sentence definition) and in for the event location (which is part
 of the code [InPlace]).

What I am now faced with is where I used places like hospitals or
cemeteries in my locations list, and didn't change the prepositions.
I have kept in which I think is an accurate description (you are
born in a hospital, not at it). But how can I globally change the
use elsewhere by Legacy of its in prepositions to at? Is there any way?

Well, at least the NEHGS says if you use in to at least keep it
consistent. But I wonder if the use of at is more professional,
and if so, should Legacy have that option?

 I don't mind off-list responses with your opinions, but I don't want
to start a debate on list about which preposition is best! LOL! My
questions which should be addressed on list are (1) is there a way
to globally change the preposition of in to at in the Locations
List, and (2) can Legacy have the option to use at instead of in
in its InPlace definition and locations preposition list, if that
is a more professional manuscript standard.

 Thank you,
 Susan

Also some of us are not all able to follow up on the answers to our

I remember some time ago in my life when I got agitated at people who

Tom,

These are the steps I took to upload the ged.com to Ancestry:

ALWAYS run maintenance check repair files, and BACK-UP at least once
before you start uploading and downloading.

1. I opened my family database in Legacy. I chose FileExportged.com
file (ged.com 5.0 only) at this point you have to carefully select the
choices for your export. The Help Index Export Ged.com Files has all of
the options listed with full descriptions. Then, a menu opened asking me
to name this new family file and to save it in C:\Legacy\data.

2. After that import, I opened and checked to be sure it was exactly
like I wanted it to be. After you make any necessary corrections, then I
export this family file choosing FileExportged.com file (ged.com 5.0
only) make sure I carefully select the choices. I save it to a folder
on my desktop where I can easily find it. The suffixes will be there.

3. Login to AncestryMy AncestryUpload ged.com. When it asks for the
location of the ged.com file you will know exactly where you save it on
your desktop. Click on that file and Ancestry will upload it just in
minutes.

4. When I have accumulated about 250 new names and information then I
reverse the process and download it to my computer.

5. Import the new ged.com file to a new family file. After you have
reviewed the new data file and are satisfied that it is the way you want
it, then, you can merge it into the family file you created in #2. The
images of the historical documents and generations you have added from
Ancestry will be there.

For me, I would never attempt to work with 1,000 individual names at one
time. I work with smaller numbers and find them much easier to handle.
This is a very cumbersome and tedious process. I would much rather be
safe and sure. If I mess up a few 100 names later, I can always go back
to the last good point in both the files on my computer and the files on
Ancestry.

When I have downloaded about 500 names, then I go through steps 1-5
again and upload a new family file to Ancestry and give it a new
variation of the family name. After week or so and I am satisfied with
the new family database, then, I delete the first one I put on Ancestry.
I have been doing this for about 10 days and am very pleased with the
progress and accuracy of what I have found and the images of documents I
have attached to my files.

One more thing, when I find an historical image on Ancestry that I want
attached the family file on Ancestry. I also save it to my desktop
computer and print out a copy of the document for my reference book. I
also do the same thing for the page that you see before you view the
document. It will give you all the information you need for your Master
Source, detail and Citations.

Hope this helps.

I recently got a subscription to Ancestry.com, and uploaded my Legacy
gedcom to Ancestry for research hints. It worked fine, but all of the
prefixes (Captain, Sir, etc) and suffixes (Such as Jr., Sr., III)
disappeared.

When I download the ancestry gedcom file into Legacy, I am not sure that
all of the notes from the research made it. Also, it seems I have to do
a merge of every person - with over 1000 people, this is a pain.

Comments on these three issues?

Thanks,

I agree that it doesn't make sense; it's a wonderful example of using a
recommendation instead of common sense ;-)

The phrasing for a birth event such as this would likely be on an ambulance
stretcher (gurney/whatever) on the walkway in front
of 135 East Main Street, not at the rear door of Medic Ambulance #138.

If you think my hyperbole is bad, you may never be ready for my puns ;-)

I must confess that even after you have explained the meaning I still don't

To misquote Spike Milligan, everybody is born somewhere. If waiting for an
ambulance, it might be on a pavement, in a house, in car, but it must be
somewhere if it isn't in the ambulance! In fact our birth certificates have a
section for the place of birth and I cannot see that at an ambulance in
 Hull would be acceptable.

A publisher (NEHGS in this case) can specify (and potentially enforce)
  their preferences for
the documents they handle. The English-speaking world, unlike France, has no
organization whose sole purpose is to keep the language pure.

The differences between British English and other English speakers have
  been noted for a
long time - in The Canterville Ghost (1887), Oscar Wilde wrote: `We have

Note that a number of people (Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, even
  Winston Churchill,

  England and the
  US.

From a US point of view, I think of at when there is an identifiable
  location (street address,
landmark) and in when the location is more general (township, etc.). In
  the case of a
medical event, there is a difference in whether a child is born in an
  ambulance (on the way

Re: [LegacyUG] Saving census images

2007-11-09 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,

Always choose a image format like Tiff if available.
The image is embedded in the PDF and to enhance it, you have to copy
the image out of the PDF. I don't think this would be different even
if you owned PDF writing/editing software although they may have some
image editing software included. The copied PDF image is unlikely to
be as high a resolution as the straight image format.

Re: [LegacyUG] Vista and HTML

2007-11-09 Thread Ward Walker
I was going to say that you can set the format for inidivual entries in your
address book, but that capability seems to be gone in the Contacts list for
Windows Mail in Vista! Fortunately, there is an option to automatically set
the format when replying to an e-mail to be the same as was used in the
incoming mail. Otherwise, if you want your global setting to be HTML for
most new messages, you have to remember to turn that off for each individual
posting to mail lists. Argh.

Thanks to Sherry and Jim I have verified that Legacy is installed in the
Legacy folder on the C drive, rather than within the Program Files folder
and I have set the Use Account Control to on. I have also turned off
HTML on my e-mail system. I hope that having done that doesn't create a

Find them in the index. Unlinking does not delete

Unless you only know one parent, always link

RE: [LegacyUG] Prepositions of In and At for locations

2007-11-09 Thread Cary
That's true.

Susan, at least for events it is possible to edit the Event type itself to
use what you want before locations, although what you are editing is the
type of Event rather than all events so you would have to do them one at a
time. Go to Master list, Event Definition, Edit. I've edited some of my
event types where I use the notes in a consistent way but have not edited
for location prepositions myself.

I don't think there is any way to change this in a location specific way
or for everything. If there is, I don't know of it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Possible to search sources??

2007-11-09 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,

Bob's suggestion can help you find what you actually put for a Source
List Name so you can find it in the Master Source list. Searching in
the Title may give a clue to the Source List Name.

However, it isn't any use for Citations (Source Details) as you are
given no idea what Master Source or what Individual they are attached
to. It's very useful for Citations if you are correcting a typo though.

Re: [LegacyUG] Names/AKA's and Sourcing

2007-11-09 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Another thing to consider - is it possible that this error was carried over
to some other source down the road. In the case of the census this
PROBABLY(?) would not be the case, but if it was misspelled on a land deed,
or a certificate of some kind - and that deed or certificate was later used
for another transaction or another record . . . the error could continue on
and on.

If there is that possibility, you may want to include it in the AKAs so you
remember to look for that alternate spelling during future searches. But
you would, of course, want to document that you believe it was a clerical
error and not an actually name she used.

And just for a different point of view I use AKA's for any
spelling variation, or name use, as well as married names for females.
I have a person that I used an AKA to show a spelling variation on
an index (but was ok on the original). I use it that way so that I
can easily find people in Legacy's index, etc. I hook up the source
to the specific AKA I found it under.

So basically, it is however you prefer.

If you look in the Master Location List, you can change the
preposition for any location from in to whatever you like.
I don't know whether this is bug free as it's not something I do and

Pat,
Not sure how large your tree is, but if you can do a multiple descendants
report, export it to an RTF, you could search the spources at the end of the
file using the Word Processing search feature. But if you have a lot of
people, and that source isn't going to be in that report, then you will miss
out on it.

Alternatively, do a Source Report (Books/Other) and include all sources and
all RINs, etc., export to a PDF and use the Adobe to search the report.

Click on Reports
Click on Books/Other tab
Click on Multiple Lines of Descent

At the bottom of the next window, you'll see a change button, this is where
you add all the people you wish to do multiple lines from. It automatically

clicked on Reports.

There are many Report Options, similar to the other types of reports, but
one that will be different is Don't Repeat Duplicate Lines. You will

I hope this helps get you started. You can play with it for a while to see

Hi Pat,
For what it's worth, when I save a Census or other document image from
Ancestry it always asks me what I wish to save it as, and I indicate JPEG
format, which I understood was pretty universal. When the census comes up
as a two page document, and I only need the people on one page, I bring it
up with Adobe Photoshop, trim it, and keep the one page I need. So far I
have a couple hundred documents, and a great many photos, and haven't made a
dent in the storage space on my hard drive. I notice that when I save them
in JPEG format I'm always able to enlarge them within Legacy so they are
easily read. It's just my way of doing things but I've always saved
everything in JPEG format, although I believe most programs will read TIFF
format as well.
