Re: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread Leonard Lorge
Hello,
I'm going to pipe in here as I do it a bit differently.
First, I save a copy of the census page under the family of, for example,
Louis Lorge, and I record it as: My Documents/Genealogy
Documents/Lorge/Lorge, Louis.
Next I record the Event as: Residence/farm of Louis Lorge on Chester Road/1
Jun 1905 (the date on the census page)/Deer Creek Twp, Outagamie Co,
Wisconsin.
Next I record the source for this event by going to the Master Source, such
as 1905 WI State Census, Deer Creek, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin. In the Source
details I enter the Source Information for that particular census page.
That's it.
I used to attach a picture of the census page but that gets messy when you
want to print a book and have it cluttered up with little illegible pictures
of census pages, so I just keep the pages for my own reference now.
If someone does it differently I'd appreciate hearing from them.
I don't intend to change thousands of entries but I still appreciate the
helpful exchange of information.

Re: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread Susan Daily
In addition to some of the other advice, you can also place some words
in the descriptive field like, "the family farm" or "the family home"
so it reads "He resided at the family farm in 1880 in Saint Johns"
If you do have a street address, put that in the description and it
reads very nicely.

RE: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread Cathy

Hi Barbara,
You get the choice in Report Options on the Format tab.

If you want some in list form and some in sentence form then you need
to choose Sentence form in the Report Options but edit the Sentence
Definition for the events you want in list form so that they are like
a list. If you add an unknown event type, the default "sentences" are
in list form so you can see what that looks like.

RE earlier message:
If you want a sentence like: "She resided at Saint Johns, Franklin
County, Missouri,

USA, in 1880."
Try: [FirstHeShe] resided at [Place] in [Date].[sources] [Notes]
If you are also going to use the Description field, you'll need to
consider what you put in it. You could, for example, put others in
the household - family, parents, husband ...

[FirstHeShe] resided at [Place] in [Date] with [HisHer]
[Description].[sources] [Notes]

I think you'll find you'll want to use [atPlace] and [onDate] but try
it out. Don't forget to include the [Sources] and [Notes] fields if
you want them to appear.

Note I prefer to use [FirstHeShe] as this alternates the use of the
First name through an individual's events so you don't get a heap of
sentences beginning with He or She.

Re: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread JLB
It's in the Report options. For instance, Descendants Book Report.
Look under the Format tab for Event Narrative Format.(large button) I
think you can only have one format at a time, ie everything in sentences
or everything in point form, but there's 4 different variations of
sentence formatting and two for List Style.

The way I enter census data is to make the Event says 'Census', then the
date and location in the Description/Place/Notes field. You don't have to
have Events print out as sentences. You can also have them as a list in
point form. I believe printing a Location report involves the locations as
they exist in the Master Location list. Since all the locations entered in
your database, in any appropriate location fields, are in there, it would
automatically print them. If you put the location of the census in the
Desc/Places/Notes field, it will be included in your Location Report.

Barbara,

There is nothing really wrong with that arrangement, although you may
have to change the sentence wording for it to read properly (having
changed it on mine I'm not sure what the default wording is!).

My own arrangement is:

Name: Residence
Description: census
Date: eg 1881
Location: Full Address

Details of the census are contained in the Source.

I don't know how many records you have but if it is quite a lot I'd be
sorely tempted to leave it providing it can be made to read OK.

Hi Barbara,

The change is for every one using that event type. If you just want
to change one person, you use the Sentence Override (which you'll see
on a tab before you click the Edit event Sentence Definition button.)

RE: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread Barbara Ford
I gave myself too much credit--maybe I DON'T know how to make the event read
differently. Right now, if I leave the location in the Description field,
the report reads, "She resided at Saint Johns, Franklin County, Missouri,
USA, in 1880."

(I do like thatonly disadvantage I see is that this is actually a
location, and it is not in a location field. Somehow that bothers me.)

If I change it, and put the location in the Location field, it reads,
"She had a residence in 1880 in Saint Johns, Franklin County, Missouri, USA.

(In my earlier message I used the phrase "he owned a residence." That was
incorrect. It is reading "he/she had a residence."

So, assuming I decide to put the location in the location field, but do not
want it to read "he/she had a residence in..." how do I change that?

Thanks,
Barbara

Barbara,

There is nothing really wrong with that arrangement, although you may have
to change the sentence wording for it to read properly (having changed it on
mine I'm not sure what the default wording is!).

My own arrangement is:

Name: Residence
Description: census
Date: eg 1881
Location: Full Address

Details of the census are contained in the Source.

I don't know how many records you have but if it is quite a lot I'd be
sorely tempted to leave it providing it can be made to read OK.

Re: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread Cathy

Hi Barbara,

It makes sense to have Locations in the Location field. Then you can
use the Show list from the Master Location list to see everyone
connected with a particular place (or group of places). You can't do
this if some of the information is in the description field.

Whether you want to have a Residence event sourced with the Census or
also have a census event is up to you.
I have some Residence events sourced with several censuses as the
family hasn't moved. I tend to only add separate residence events for
key people.

I like to have Census Events as I can then see at a glance whether
I've found every relevant census for that individual. I don't always
include the Census Events in a report. You can make them all Private
very easily by ticking the relevant box in the edit dialogue from the
Master Event list (or the Edit Event Sentence Definition button)

Should I have a different procedure--is that where the census information

should I delete what is now in Description and put it in the Location field
of the event?

RE: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-03 Thread Barbara Ford
Thanks--there are probably 100 or so records I would have to change, but,
frankly, I'm fast. You're right about the wording being strange...I think I
know how to make it read better. As is, if I have a three-year-old in a
certain township, the report reads "He owned a residence at..."
The only reason I could think of to change them all would be for something I
might want to do with the Location field--for example, if I want to print
the locations at the end of a report, it would pull all those "residence"
locations, too, wouldn't it? That could be good or bad, I guess

I'm thinking I will go ahead and change all (I'm making a big deal out of
this, because I'm trying to understand/clean up all the records that came in
from FTM when I imported, and hope I am confident on how to enter data
before I add any new records), and then try to change the wording.

Thanks,
Barbara

Re: [LegacyUG] All relatives show in Name List

2007-12-03 Thread Cathy

Hi Larry,
You appear to be asking the same question over and over and I thought
the answer had been given.
If the answers given don't meet what you want, you need to tell us
what the problem is. That is, clarify your request.

You can tag everyone related by using Advanced Tagging and using the
Entire Line options in either Ancestor or Descendant options.
If this tags too many (it will include the ancestors of in-laws etc
if they are in your file), then go to the earliest couple/person in
the lines you want included and tag descendants only.

There is a scrapbooking company (Creative Memories) that has something
called Memory Manager that you can organize and categorize the digital images -

you can put in dates, descriptions, fix the photos, and put them in folders
(shoeboxes) (via linking - the one photo may be in several files depending on
how you sort your files). It is very easy to use and you can do searches by
names, dates, etc. I believe it is at their website. I have no interest in
this company - but use it as a customer for my photos (scanned slides, camera
photos) and my images (censuses, etc.) from various websites. I am not sure
but I think the cost is $40. I really like how easy it is to use and there
are tutorials and faqs on website that are useful. The scrapbook uses are
separate and not related to your question.

Re: [LegacyUG] SPAM happening

2007-12-03 Thread Susan Daily
Lucy,
What might have happened is a Legacy User Group member using
Prodigy.net, too, might have flagged the emails as spam, and
Prodigy.net started filtering them that way. You might have to let
them know a mistake has been made.

I notice it happens every once in a while, but it is usually new
subscribers whose emails get sent to the Spam box since GMAIL hasn't
seen me receive them before, from their personal addresses. I even
have set up a filter using [LegacyUG] but that doesn't keep thing out
of the spam box. When I notice it is happening, I let the LUGgers know
since there are quite a few of us using GMAIL, and not everyone pays
attention to what goes into the spam box. It eventually tapers off.

Various reasons: because sometimes the question is not related to the problem,
answering the question may not help resolve the problem et. etc.

In this case the answer is "No there has been no change" (at least as far back

me to be perfectly reasonable.

I filter the incoming messages by looking for [LegacyUG] or Legacy News

Those messages go into a Legacy folder in my email client. (

Other email clients will have similar message filtering functions.

I'm afraid to upload mine... I could get lucky and get Yul Brenner...

I'm not sure how accurate it is - matching a picture of me to their

RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Report - how to print on one page?

2007-12-03 Thread Rob Miller
Hi Mary:

Thanks! Sorry, I didn't receive that message from you (I'll check my SPAM
folder!).

But you're right! I heard back from Sherry and Jim and a fix will be in the
next build.

Thanks! :)

As I stated, this was a result of a fix that they put in for a problem with
sourcing that I discovered. Fixes sometimes result in breaks elsewhere.
They can't catch everything!

They know about this problem and have stated that it will be in the next
build.

Ah! I hadn't bothered to check because I presumed that was the latest and I
thought I was running the latest as I "always" update at each prompt. Turns
out "always" wasn't quite accurate as I was only on 155!

I've now updated to 168 and my Sources tab looks like yours, so of course
I've also lost the ability to print an Individual Report with the Sources on
the same page, but that doesn't bother me too much, fortunately.

Sorry for the confusion.

RE: [LegacyUG] Needing info about Legacy HTML

2007-12-03 Thread ronald ferguson

Dale,

The details of using , changing, html are not really for this list. If you
would like to visit http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/ then all aspects can
be covered.

This group was specifically set up to help Legacy users get the most out of the
web output.
