[LegacyUG] Adding from books published with other people's family research and sourcing

2008-01-16 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I haven't been following the list for a while because of holidays, but
was curious about the thread on how others add to their files from
gedcoms etc.

I have been fortunate in that some of my husband's family has been
researched and documented into two books that I know about, while two
of my mother's great-uncle's family lines were documented in another
book because their wives' family history was researched and published.
I was lucky enough to have photos and references of sources listed
that I can cross check.

How do others deal with this type of information when it comes to
adding it to your file. For my part, I've added from two of the
books, sourced the books and started cross checking the information.
I can't use the photos because of copyright issues, but I was thinking
of adding an event listing that a photo of an individual is available
and cite the book.

I now have lots of original research from my 93 year old
grandmother-in-law with photos etc, I plan to list her as my source,
along with the various places/publications etc that she gathered the
material from. Is this the most appropriate way to source the
information? Other thoughts are most welcome.

Cheers
Tracy

2008-01-16 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi again Listers
I saw the wall chart in the last lot of Legacy news and I can't wait

copying from family members for the past couple of years. Does anyone
have any more news on the release date for version 7?

2008-01-16 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Tracy,

A purist may well say that the Sources are really the books, but personally I
would say that the Souce is your gm-in-law. I would create a Master Source for
her and (as a lumper) would put the book information in the details.

Re: [LegacyUG] Return Receipts

2008-01-16 Thread Joseph (Ragweed)

I agree that I was a bit behind it's difficult to keep up with such a
high volume of eMail as I get here.

However, I'm on several list that requite one to send in Plain Text and
this is how I have my eMail set and it works. And I get to use html
also.

I'm know there's various ways of getting eMail to send plain or html but
what I'd explained is most versatile for me.

Joseph,

That is totally WRONG advice.

Momalot admitted to being a newbie on LegacyUserGroup. She has now learned
how to post in plain text. You replied to her post from several days back
which was in Rich text therefore your post also was RTF because you
checked Reply to messages in the format in which they were sent. That
should be turned OFF. We should always post to Legacy in plain text
regardless whether originating or replying.

Rootsweb allows posting to in any format because their server
automatically converts to plain text. Some other groups totally reject
RTF. Legacy's server can't do this but they request we co-operate by self
control.

Legacy gives us an excellent product value for the money. I wouldn't want
them to overspend on a server if they had to pass on the costs to us
users.

in the format in which they were sent Other programs are similar.

The download part of the Legacy website mentioned last year that new
customers of Legacy 6.0 would get Legacy 7.0 for free when it is
released later this summer, then later this fall and then later
this year. Now this shortened to when it is released. Thus it is
probably best not to expect it, because then it might actually happen.
At least that is what I am trying to do.

2008-01-16 Thread BOB CUNNINGHAM
Why does everyone need to jump up and down about version 7. The only problem I
can see is that
Legacy made the announcement to early. Surely the longer the programmers work
on the new version
the better, I hope they take their time and when it is released that they have
worked out most of
the bugs. So lets leave the programmers alone to finish the job in piece and
not give us a botched
up job.

Dear Patti,

Why would you say that the Caribbean has so little significance for most
genealogists? There is a lot of history between New England and the
Caribbean that goes back hundreds of years. The same can be said for New

Take care,

RE: [LegacyUG] Version 7 family charts

2008-01-16 Thread Sherry/Support
The cruise destinations haven't been picked for any particular genealogical
significance but just as a fun way for Legacy users to get together and
learn about using Legacy!

The days at sea are spent in classes on Legacy and other topics and then on
the days we're in port everyone goes on shore excursions, either through the
ship's excursion listing or off on their own.

Thanks for using Legacy.

I guess that would be fun for those on the trip, but kind of a downer
for the rest of us to wait that long. The trip sounds wonderful and
I applaud Legacy for going somewhere else besides the Caribbean which
has so little significance for most genealogists.

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7 family charts

2008-01-16 Thread Patti Hobbs
Admittedly, my experience isn't that great, but I am under the
impression that more people would be more likely to have had ancestors
in European countries than in the Caribbean. I know that there was
involvement in the trade routes, etc. and British colonies with that,
but it just seems it would be a small number of people. I would be
interested in visiting areas where my ancestors were from even if
there was no genealogy involved, but I would have absolutely no
interest in a cruise to the Caribbean unless it were free:-).

Of the history that went on between New England and the Caribbean, was
there a significant number of people who lived and intermarried and
had children etc. in the Caribbean? Recently I've been reading an old
newspaper that contains a lot of news items from my ancestor. On
occasion he made trips to Chicago to get stock for his store. But I'm
not interested in going to Chicago to see a place he went on business.

I'm afraid some will say we're off topic here.

Bob,

The same thing was said while people were waiting for the last upgrade for
UFT... and it never appeared.
I'm hoping that Legacy doesn't follow that same path.

Btw, anyone know if Legacy 7 will run under Vista64?

Why does everyone need to jump up and down about version 7. The only problem I
can see is that
Legacy made the announcement to early. Surely the longer the programmers work
on the new version
the better, I hope they take their time and when it is released that they have
worked out most of
the bugs. So lets leave the programmers alone to finish the job in piece and
not give us a botched
up job.
