Re: [LegacyUG] Searching for missing images

2008-02-24 Thread Ron Taylor
You can direct Legacy where to look for multimedia (pictures) under
OptionsCustomizeLocationsView Current List of Multimedia Locations. A
list titled Picture/Sound/Video/File path is displayed which shows each
path that is linked to a picture. If you have saved pictures elsewhere,
then add that path to the list or change a path already in the list. If the
same picture file name exists under more than one path, then delete or
change the paths that you want Legacy to follow to the picture. For
example, if you moved all your picture collection from the C: drive to the
H: drive then change the path names from C: to H: and the pictures will be
found there assuming that the respective paths were not changed below the
specification of the root drive letter.

When you allow Legacy to search for lost (un-linked) pictures, it does
search the attached drives in alphabetical order. The implied suggestion
that there might be a default starting point for the search would be a good
addition...or an exclude list of locations to be searched. If Legacy is
successful at finding the pictures, it adds the path to the table mentioned
above and internally links the found picture to the path that has been
added.

[LegacyUG] How do I keep my locations menu open?

2008-02-24 Thread myrna20
Good morning listers,

Today I am wishing I had 3 monitors instead of two. BUT, right
now that wont even work.

I am working with the Henry County, Alabama cemeteries on #2
monitor. Legacy is open on #1. I have the Legacy screen open in
the family tab then click on view, master lists, locations
and have found the particular cemeteries. I want this screen
(locations) to stay open but then I cannot edit any of the data
on the family view. I have even tried the split screen and opened
the view... from each side but still could not edit the
opposite side.

Is there any way to do this? It is a real hassle to keep calling
up the view . and then locate the cemetery I want.

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I keep my locations menu open?

2008-02-24 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
If the information you want fits your screen size (you don't have to scroll
to see all the information of interest), then you might do a Print Screen.
If you've never done this, the process is:

Press Print Screen (mine is on the upper right side of the keyboard)
Open Word Pad (under accessories)
Click paste

You can then print the image. When printing the image, I have always had to
go into Page Setup and switch to landscape. Even if you have to scroll, you
could do 2 images.

Try this:
Tag the locations you want
Create a Location Report of the tagged locations
Save the report to your Desktop as a PDF file
Open the PDF report and size it and your Legacy display so that you can read

Edit

Hope this helps.

In general it isn't possible to edit data which is also being used elsewhere -
just as one cannot delete a file which is in use. This is not a Legacy thing

[LegacyUG] Spell Check Problem

2008-02-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I seem to have created a problem with the spell checker in the event notes
window. Among other errors, I often type 'teh' instead of 'the'. I somehow
managed to add the incorrect spelling to my user dictionary. So any time I did
a spell check, 'teh' was accepted as a correct spelling.
When I tried to correct the problem by setting up an automatic change, nothing
happened. So I tried to delete the incorrect spelling from the user dictionary.
When I type 'teh' now, the correction window opens, but all the fields are
blank. I tried deleting the user dictionary from my hard drive and
reinstalling, but there has been no change. Any suggestions on how to fix this
problem (other than learn to type correctly so you don't need a spell check)
will be greatly appreciated.

My question has to do with Legacy's photo gallery and TNG's
headstones and photos. I would like to include photos, including
headstones, in my Legacy file and have them export them to TNG. I'm
updating from Legacy 5.0 to 6.0. I'm at TNG 6.1.3 and can move to 6.2
soon. I do not make edits within TNG.

I'm unclear in a couple of areas and hope someone on the list can
provide an answer (or redirect me).

 1. Is there something I need to do in Legacy so that headstones can
be separated from other photos once they get to TNG?

 2. Will I need to edit the path in the gedcom between export and
import to TNG so that the paths are changed from
 C:/local/computer/path to tng/photos ?

 3. Can this also be applied to scanned documents (which like
headstones are a subset of photos)?

 Many thanks,

 Kami

John,

The dictionaries are simply text files and stored in C:\Legacy\Dictionaries
(assuming you have used the defaults). Find the one for your country eg
userdic-uk.tlx, right click on it, click Open and choose to select your
program the pick Notepad and delete the incorrect entry.

Richard -

That works possibly for many - but not here in many rural areas. My
library is open only for a few hours a week - and a line to use the two
computers they have. Disks are not allowed because god knows - One of
you may give us a virus. Neither is using email. (I know - our
librarian needs to move into the real world).

It's more than 30 miles one way for me to the nearest computer store and
I have one ISP option that is not long distance. I pay more for my bad
dialup than most people pay for dsl.

And the thing is I know I'm not the only one here in this country. My
guess is some of our overseas users may also have problems.

I do appreciate, however, when those of you who can view or listen to
these mention them and then let us all know of any wonderful news that
they contain. That is much appreciated.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Spell Check Problem

Any suggestions on how to fix this
problem (other than learn to type correctly so you don't need a spell check)
will be greatly appreciated.

technology advances and we depend more and more for things to just be
on the web those who develop software and the sites that support them -

not everyone is going to be able to get the latest and greatest at the

My guess? I MIGHT be able to get affordable dsl after the rest of you

Re: [LegacyUG] Photos/Scrapbook

2008-02-24 Thread Cathy

Hi Gary,

It sounds as if you have added your Tombstone photos as Individual
photos rather than as Burial photos. When you do that, they will show
as the Individual Picture if there isn't another preferred picture
for that person. If you attach them as Burial photos, they won't show
as the Individual Picture whether or not there is a picture attached
as an Individual Picture.

If you attach them as Burial photos they will show on a Family Group
Sheet and Individual Report if you've chosen to include Event
Pictures. However they don't currently show on other reports. If you
want them to, you currently need to make a special event and attach
them to that.

In the reports, only one picture per category is included - provided
that category of picture can be included and you've chosen to have
them in your report. (By category I mean either Individual or a
particular event in the Event/Fact list. eg you may attach holiday
snaps to a Holiday event but only one will be included in reports and
then only if you have chosen to include Event Pictures)

In addition, you can include all preferred pictures or only tagged
preferred or only untagged preferred pictures. Preferred pictures are
shown by the asterisk. The tagging by the ticks in the little boxes
above the photos in the Photo Gallery.

To get all pictures attached as Individual pictures or in other ways,
you have to use the Scrapbook - as you've discovered.

Cathy

At 05:37 AM 24/02/2008, you wrote:

I've been playing around with PHOTOS and SCRAPBOOKs. In addition to
individual photos attached to family pages I've added some of my
TOMBSTONE photos.

In doing so I've found if all I have is a tombstone photo it displays on
the family page. I'd rather not have the tombstone photo displayed if no
individual's photo is available. Is there a way to over ride this?

Is there a way to have the individuals photo as well as the tombstone
photo printed on a family group report? Only thing I've found where
everything shows up is the SCRAPBOOK option!

And, while I'm at it I might as well ask this as well.is there a way
to specify in any type report that individuals photos are to be printed
vs tombstone photos? I have my individuals' photos in one folder and
tombstone photos are in another folder.

Hope I've made my situation clear enough that someone can give me an
answer. I'm probably asking too much though!

Thanks

Yup, that's how it is. You need to create a Burial Event and attach to that to
get them print. Note that only one will show for each event created.

[LegacyUG] Documenting negative searches

2008-02-24 Thread Michele Lewis
Where do y'all document NEGATIVE searches? Do you just have a list under
the general tab? research tab?

Or, do you make a to-do for it and document that the search was negative? I
am not sure how that would work. Right now what I do is when I have done
something on the to-do list I just delete it.

There must be something in the air today. I am also trying to print
burial photos in a Desc Book Report and can't do it. I can hardly wait
for Version 7 so Legacy can get going with Version 8. I'm hoping that's
the one where they do a major overhaul of all things photographic.

That's just the way it is.
You currently can't include Birth, Baptism, Death, Burial or Marriage
photos in a Book Report.
If you desperately want them in a Book Report, you have to create an
event and link them to that event.

I don't consider Tax Rolls (or for that matter the US Census) as events;
imho they are merely sources for the information they contain about certain
aspects of an individual's life (place of residence at that particular
instance in time, etc.).

As sources I would set them up as:

Tax Roll Mississippi 1816 Territorial
Tax Roll Mississippi 1820 Perry County

Thus all tax rolls would sort by state by year by county in the Master
Source List

I would like your advice on event names.

I am inputting tax rolls.

Should I just put the event name as Tax Roll and then put all the details in

other spots or should I put then entire name

1816 Mississippi Territorial Tax Roll
1820 Perry County, Mississippi Tax Roll

Michele,

You are quite correct, there is not a really satisfactory way of dealing with
these. I also used to have them in my ToDos and deleted them if the results
were negative. Unfortunately because of the numbers it got to the stage that I
could not be sure whether I had properly checked something out.

Now I leave them in together with a comment regarding the negative outcome -
and usually a little more to vent my frustration :-).

Another good thing, too, is that it dates when you closed it. You

Thanks to all. I happen to read the answer in another post about 2 minutes
after sending my question. I have over 150 headstone pictures I was just
beginning to link when I realized they were not printing. It seems a real
waste of time having to create a new event to print out something that
already has an entry.
Just like all the sources I have been holding off including for the last 3
months, I guess I'll just wait (and wait) to see if 7 offers a better way.

You can also include them as Source Detail photos and print your Source
pictures in a Book report.

That's just the way it is.
You currently can't include Birth, Baptism, Death, Burial or Marriage
 photos in a Book Report.
If you desperately want them in a Book Report, you have to create an
event and link them to that event.

Quick question. I can get burial photos to print in the Family Group
Record but not in the Descendent Narrative or Descendant report. Am I
doing something wrong or is it just programmed that way. I have all
 the picture options checked yes.
