RE: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy

2008-08-16 Thread KevinRPhillips
John,

No, we’re not planning on doing an iPhone version either… There’s 9 years
worth of development effort in Pocket Genealogist and we aren’t going to
replicate that on another platform. (Besides, the list of requested
enhancements for Pocket Genealogist is plenty to keep us busy for years!)

The iPhone is getting a lot of attention at the moment, but it’s still a
relatively small market. Also Microsoft isn’t about to give up its lead
without a fight… now that they have some competition shaking things up
it’ll get interesting to see what’s coming in the next couple of versions of
Windows Mobile.

Hopefully the authors of The Pocket Genealogist, or some other enterprising

Yes. The latest update is build 7.0.0.55, with a date of July 13,
2008. It seems a little slow this time, but remember, they came home
from a cruise (probably had to recover from that), might not have a

I often print out Descendants Reports (PDF format, under "Reports ->
Books/Other") which I then email to the living descendants of the person, to
check for mistakes and also prod these guys to tell me things I don't
already know. Usually works great. However, these reports are never
perfect or complete. (No genealogy is, and I'm often sending these out
because I know or suspect problems!)

So anyway, it is important for me to put in notes so that I don't enrage
relatives. Things like "I know I'm missing all of Dorrie's step-children",
or "I haven't yet entered all the information of Rolf's family tree" or "I'm
not sure about the spelling of Great-Gran Pat's last name" or whatever it
is. Right now, I put that stuff in email that has the PDF attached. But
often it is lost or ignored. (People forward the PDF on to others without
including my email, or the print out the PDF and review it long after
forgetting what was in the email, or something.)

I'd really like to put that information on the title page of the report, but
I don't see how I can put in a paragraph or three of text on that page.
Does anyone know of a way to do this? Is that a reasonable feature for a
future release of Legacy?

I often do the same thing but using rtf with underlines inserted for the
missing things. (The underlines are a report option if you haven't seen
that.) Of course it would be easy to add notes at the top of an rtf.
For pdf's I use my handy-dandy pdf editor from Zeon, called PDF Plus.
It's only $60 compared to several hundred for Acrobat and I use it
extensively.

Do I set-up just one Master Source for the census or a Master Source

Ecclesiastical parish etc.
Where does one record this information, in the Location Details field
or does this contain the actual street address of the household?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

My choice is just to have one source for each English Census, one for
each Welsh, etc. Therefore I do not record any "Jurisdiction County" in
the Master Source.

In the Source Details I put the name of the Civil Parish and the name of
the County in Location Details.

I don't think it is necessary to record the Ecclesiastical Parish,
Parliamentary Borough, Rural Sanitary District etc, etc.

Personally, I don't include the Street Address in the Source Citation.
Opinions differ over whether the street address should be included in
the Event Address or in the Place field, along with the Civil Parish,
County and Country. (I have just moved from the former camp to the
latter!)

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage Records - Volume & Page Number

2008-08-16 Thread Syble Glasscock
Sorry to say divorce is all to common in the U.S.  Our divorce records actually
give additional information such as the original marriage date, and the number
of children, and sometimes this really helps with the research, so even due to
some being listed as "living", I'd like these in my database for my research.

Marriage announcements/engagements are common in some newspapers.  I've
actually found a couple that are from the 1950's, it's interesting to read who
was present etc. as was common to publish then, so really want to include them,
hadn't even considered the later ones.

I've been entering each of these as a Marriage event, but could be just added
to the Marriage notes section.
Thanks,
Syble

Syble,

I do not publish divorce and marriage announcements. However, it should be
noted that in England, prior to the 1920s (I think) divorce was virtually the
preserve of the very rich as parliamentary approval was required. It has really
only become common in the last 50 years so many divorcees are still alive.

These are not from an index, they are from the original records at the county
courthouse. I like to create a "timeline" with my Events, but after
thinking over this Vol. & Pg. # issue, you're right, adding it to the
marriage notes would get it into reports. I don't add the sources to
reports. One of my issues with reports is the length of them, and those not
really into genealogy get overwhelmed with some of the reports.

How do you handle divorces & marriage announcements?

Thanks,

Syble

Syble,

I cannot see how one can describe the volume and page numbers as part of an
event. They are details from an index to the source document identifying the
location of the source.

I want the Volume & page number to print out on reports, not just on the
source. The only solution I've found is to make a marriage event including
the Vol. & pg number, I also include the recorded date and officiator when
I
have it.

It looks like it would be so simple to have a space for this when you add the
date & place of marriage. Adding marriage events just makes the reports
longer, and there is plenty of space by the date and place line on the Family
Report for other information.

I was wondering how others handle this.

I wholeheartedly agree with Jacki about the egregious indexing errors
found in Ancestry -having names in the index that in no way resemble what
is found on the census image. It especially annoys me that you can only
provide an alternative spelling, and note that it is a transcription
error, or else you can submit a more serious comment. But you can't get
them to change transcription errors that are obvious when you compare the
index with the census image. In my census events, I record the dates and
corrections I submit to Ancestry. It was my hope that some day
Ancestry.com clean up their census databases and remove the transcription
errors. The problem is that once Ancestry.com introduces an error into
their index, Ancestry subscribers will copy the erroneous data to their
family tree, and before you know it there will be four individual family
trees using the incorrect information. This is why I keep track of census
index errors in Ancestry.com and corrections I submit. And that is why I
continue submitting corrections. The problem is not with someone using my
database being able to find the original source. The problem is with
errors that are propagated on Ancestry.com.

With the number of indexing errors I have found using the Ancestry
census renditions, I do like to note those that I got from that
particular source. (Not that other sources don't also have indexing
errors - I just find Ancestry particularly egregious - especially in
linking the wrong images to people or having names that in the index in
no way resemble what is found on the census image.)

With items I have found on Ancestry indexes, I do have a separate master
source for each census - something like Ancestry 1860 United States
Census - with the proper sourcing - and in any details I can also note
the error (says indexed as Poploski sted Peacock). My other census
results are grouped as 1860 United States Census.

If Steve has a large number found at one particular library - and feels
the necessity of noting it - it might be one way around the problem.

[LegacyUG] Setting up Source Writer for English 1901 Census

2008-08-16 Thread Russ Stephens
Hi all
I am trying to use the source writer to set-up an English 1901 census record
but am finding it confusing.
Do I set-up just one Master Source for the census or a Master Source for
each Jurisdiction County?
The 1901 image contains Administrative county, Civic parish, Ecclesiastical
parish etc.
Where does one record this information, in the Location Details field or
does this contain the actual street address of the household?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advanced

[LegacyUG] Book Source Citations and Bibliographies

I have created several books. I have selected that source citations and
bibliographies are printed for all the books.

Also, for each book I have opted to have the sources show as footnotes at
the end of each page.

One, and only one, of the books will not print the Bibliography (or show it
in the Table of Contents) when I have the sources shown as Footnotes. The
Bibliography will print for this one book when I opt to show the sources
after the last chapter.

Any idea why this is happening?

RE: [LegacyUG] Use of Correct Given Name in reports

Funny, I like the way it works now. Having a "reports name" in addition to
the "real" names seems overly complicated to me. However, if you always
want reports to show a specific name, you could always make that the chosen
name now and it would be the one that appears on reports.

I was not aware of the "work-around" to get Legacy to use a nickname in a
narrative report? It seems a little convolved to me? I'd like to suggest
that Legacy modify their software to let you select one of the alternate,
given names from the AKA list. This would require adding a feature to the
AKA file to select a preferred name for narrative reports and link it to the
report, options menu. This would seem to be a more "logical" way to do it?

Janis,

If I remember correctly it does but also has the disavantage that you cannot
remove it without losing a name. For example not only would George "Calvin"
Gilmore use Calvin when referring to the person eg. Calvin married - no
quotes. but would write George "Calvin" Gilmore born 25 Dec 1881 with
quotes.

By using George Calvin "Calvin" Gilmore the only time the name in quotes
appears is on your screens, provided that when compiling reports you have it
set to remove names in quotes.

[LegacyUG] Employment records in SourceWriter

2008-08-16 Thread Michael Berry
I just recieved some employment records on an ancestor from the National
Personnel Records Center. I can't seem to find a template that fits
employment/personnel records. Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census

2008-08-16 Thread Janis L Gilmore
Steve,

There are many varying views on this subject. I create a different Master
Source for each repository. For me this means having "Indiana, Posey - 1860
census (Ancestry)" and "Indiana, Posey - 1860 census (HeritageQuest)."

Actually, you will probably only duplicate the census source for a county or
two, presuming that only your most concentrated area of research will have
had you reading census in several different places.

Others loathe the idea of duplicating the Master Source, and prefer one
Master Source for 1860 Indiana census or even 1860 census for all states.

You could record the repository and call numbers in the comments tab and
tick the box that makes it a part of the source citation.
